American Flat Track: Ryan Varnes Racing Signs Cameron Smith To Ride KTM

Ryan Varnes Racing Signs Cameron Smith for ‘24 Mission SuperTwins Campaign

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 14, 2024) – Ryan Varnes Racing LLC (RVR) is proud to announce that Cameron Smith will pilot the #34 Schaeffer’s Motorsports KTM 790 Duke in Mission SuperTwins competition for the 2024 Progressive American Flat Track season.

The Pennsylvanian is coming off an impressive ‘23 season in which he demonstrated his ability to compete with the world’s elite motorcycle dirt trackers in the premier class, logging a pair of late-season top tens, including a fifth-place finish at the Black Hills Half-Mile.

Smith has been racing since he was six years old, and the 2024 season will mark his tenth as a professional. During that time, he’s twice finished sixth in the championship standings – once apiece in the Mission Production Twins and Parts Unlimited AFT Singles  classes – while registering numerous top fives and multiple podiums along the way.

RVR is committed to campaigning the entire 2024 Progressive AFT season along with select test days and special events. The effort is backed by Rausch Fuel and Oil, Iowa City Brake, Dick Ford, Brian Willis, and Brush/Eaken Racing with Bart Addis.

Team Manager Kevin Varnes said, “We’re excited to have Cam aboard this season. Cam and my late son, Ryan, grew up racing together, and I was lucky to have the opportunity to watch Cam compete at every level throughout his career. He is a talented hard charger with the ability to ride anything he sits on to its fullest potential.”

Smith said, “Thanks to RVR, I feel like 2024 will be my time to show everyone what I’ve really got. The team gives 100% effort, and I’m ready to give them the same every time I ride. I’ve been training hard, eating right, and doing a lot of riding this winter to get ready. I can’t wait for Daytona.”

More, from a social media post made by Chaz Davies:

“Time to dust off the ol’ suit (if it still fits)and get back down to business! If I’m not wrong I might just be the oldest guy on the grid, how’s that for some motivation. It’s going to be a big challenge but one I look forward to tackling! Lets gooo @aruba.it_racing @motoeofficial

“First of all, I would like to thank Stefano Cecconi and Aruba for the trust they have placed in me by embarking on this new adventure. Our long relationship has also developed in many different ways, first on the track with Superbike, then in the role of riders’ coach during the last two fantastic seasons. 2024 will be my tenth year of working with Aruba which fills me with pride. I am extremely excited for this new chapter, which has only been increased since having already had the chance to ride the Ducati V21L. I’ve certainly had a lot of fun riding this innovative bike and look forward to now having the chance to compete with other riders, which is why I didn’t think twice about accepting the Aruba Cloud MotoE team’s proposal. It’s with great enthusiasm that I return to the track.”

CVMA Racing Round 5 2023/2024 Winter Series

February 10-11th 2024 Chuckwalla Valley Raceway

The fifth round of the CVMA 23/24 Winter series started under clear skies and cool weather with racers coming together from all over the country to race in the California desert. The racing action was super exciting with several close finishes and race-long battles for position throughout the weekend.

Saturday Qualifying

During qualifying on Saturday morning, it was very windy and cool, but that did not seem to slow the racers down much.

The fastest of all in Saturday morning qualifying, Corey Alexander posted a 1:45.507 lap time on his open-class bike.

Brenden “Killer Bee” Ketelsen was fastest on a middleweight, turning a 1:48.493 lap time.

Justin Bordonaro was fastest on a lightweight bike with a 1:53.424 lap time.

Jayden Fernandez was fastest on an ultra-lightweight bike with a 1:55.175 lap time.

Alexander Calloway was fastest on an American Twin with a 2:04.717 lap time.

Saturday Races

Saturday’s racing was as competitive as ever. Jayden Fernandez was one of the stars of the day winning two races on his ultra lightweight bike. Fernandez won both the 500 Supersport and the Formula Ultra Lightweight races.

Brenden Ketelsen won two races on his middleweight bike. Ketelsen kicked off the weekend by winning the first race of the day, Formula Middleweight. In the Supersport Middleweight race, Ketelsen got the holeshot and led the first few laps until he ran off track in Turn Nine, handing the lead to Jorge Ehrenstein. Ketelsen was able to re-enter the track and come from behind to catch and pass Ehrenstein and take the win, his second of the day.

Reid Edwards won both amateur open races taking both the Formula and Supersport open class wins. Pearce Baker won both the Amateur Formula Middleweight and Amateur Supersport Middleweight races.

Sunday Shootouts

In the premier race of the day, the Stock 1000 Shootout, Andrew Lee charged off the line from his position in the middle of the front row of the grid to take the holeshot with Corey Alexander second. Near the end of the first lap, Alexander made a brave pass on the brakes entering Turn 14 to take the lead. At the stripe on the first lap, Alexander led with Lee close behind and Michael Gilbert running third. Alexander maintained a 1.5-second gap over Lee for the first few laps. Alexander increased his gap throughout the race to take the win with Lee second and Gilbert third.

The Formula Lightweight Twins Shootout started with Gio Alvarez getting the holeshot and Justin Bordonaro second. Bordonaro was able to quickly pass Alvarez on the inside entering Turn Four on the first lap. At the end of the first lap,  Bordonaro was followed by Alvarez and young gun Alexander Enriquez third. The front three ran nose-to-tail until just past the halfway point in the race when Enriquez made a brave pass in Turn Four to take over second from Alvarez. On the final lap, Enriquez stood up Bordonaro in Turn Five while making an inside pass for the lead, sending Bordonaro back to third. Later in the lap, Alvarez was able to pass Enriquez entering Turn 13 (The Bowl). However, Enriquez retaliated immediately in Turn 14 to retake the lead and held on until the finish. At the finish, it was Enriquez for the win, Alvarez second, and Bordonaro third.

At the start of the Formula Ultra Lightweight Shootout, Jayden Fernandez got off the line well from pole position and led into turn one. At the end of the first lap Fernandez led the way with Kensei Matsudaira second and Juliana Fernandez third and that was the order at the finish as well.

In the final shootout race of the day, the Middleweight Shootout, Brenden Ketelsen launched off pole position to lead the pack through Turn One. At the end of the first lap, Ketelsen was followed by David “Aussie Dave” Anthony and Owen Williams. Unfortunately, Anthony fell out of the race in Turn 12, handing second place to Williams and third to Aldo Rovirosa. Williams closed a 1.5-second gap and was on Ketelsen’s tail section by lap five. Meanwhile, Corey Alexander starting from the seventh row of the grid closed the gap to Rovirosa in third. Alexander was able to pass Rovirosa for third just past the halfway point in the race. On lap nine of the 10-lap race, Williams was able to pass Ketelsen to take the lead. Williams held the lead on the last lap for the win with Ketelsen unable to mount a challenge. In the end, Williams took his first win in a Shootout with Ketelsen second and Alexander third.

Repsol Honda Team reveal brand-new livery for 2024 campaign

Celebrating 30 years of collaboration and partnership between Honda HRC and Repsol, Joan Mir and Luca Marini unveiled their striking 2024 Repsol Honda Team RC213V machines at the Warner Music Station in Madrid on Tuesday, February 13.

Arriving fresh from the first test of the year in Sepang, Joan Mir and Luca Marini joined friends, family, journalists and more than 600 guests to present the 2024 Honda RC213V for the 2024 MotoGP World Championship. A striking new livery complements the young and talented pairing of Joan Mir and Luca Marini as the Repsol Honda Team head into a new year of MotoGP action, determined to continue the strong progress made already.

2024 marks the 30th season of collaboration between Repsol and Honda HRC, the longest standing partnership of its kind in two-wheeled motorsports. The relationship has produced 15 World Championships, six different World Champions, 183 premier class victories, 455 podiums and nine Triple Crowns. Alongside the new livery, 2024 also sees the partnership enter a new era as renewable fuels are introduced into the MotoGP World Championship. The continued collaboration between Honda HRC and Repsol has ensured that the maximum level of performance has been maintained.

Joan Mir enters his second season with the Repsol Honda Team, now working alongside Santi Hernandez. A year of learning in 2023 has set the 2020 MotoGP World Champion up for significant improvements in 2024, his ambition for stronger results boosted by an impressive level of work and development from HRC’s engineers. To date, the 26-year-old has 13 premier class podiums and one victory, alongside his dominant campaign to win the 2017 Moto3 World Championship. Mir’s performance in Sepang demonstrated the improvements that both he and the Honda RC213V have made during the off-season.

On the other side of the garage will be Luca Marini, the 26-year-old becoming the 20th full-time rider to wear the colours of the Repsol Honda Team. Joining the premier class in 2021 after earning six wins and 15 podiums in the Moto2 World Championship, Marini has demonstrated clear progress in his development as a Grand Prix rider. In his three previous seasons in MotoGP, Marini has taken two Grand Prix podiums, two pole positions and four Sprint podiums. 2024 will be the first season of a two-year contract for the Italian.

The 2024 Honda RC213V not only features a new livery, but also a number of upgrades across the machine. From revised aerodynamics to improvements to the engine and chassis. An off-season of intense research and development has birthed a motorcycle which is the first step in closing the gap and battling for positions at the front. Both Tetsuhiro Kuwata, HRC General Manager, and Alberto Puig, Repsol Honda Team Manager, highlighted the importance that this season will play for the team and the championship.

The Repsol Honda Team will now head to the Lusail International Circuit for the final MotoGP pre-season test on February 19 to 20 before the season begins in earnest at the same track just two weeks later on March 08 to 10. It will be the first stop on a 21-race calendar which will span the reach of the globe before concluding in Valencia on November 17.

Joan Mir

“It’s amazing to be part of a team with such history and success in MotoGP, I am as excited to start this season with the Repsol Honda Team as I was the last one. These team launches are always really nice, especially to see what everyone thinks of the new design. I think the colours for this year are really different and very bold, certainly something unique from the team. We have had a positive first taste of the bike and five productive days in Sepang, now we have to look ahead to the Qatar Test and the race. Last year taught me a lot and I am looking to put everything into practice for this year to help the Repsol Honda Team return to where I know they can be. Let’s enjoy this moment and quickly prepare for the season that is to come.”

“For me it is an honour to join the Repsol Honda Team, when I was a young child I already had some leathers in their colours for racing minibikes. Now to be here, at the launch, in the leathers and with the bike – it is a dream come true, something from destiny. This bike looks really beautiful, the colours are something very new and I am proud to represent them. We are just at the start of our journey together, but I already feel a part of the team and well supported by the engineers. I’ve ridden just six days on the bike so we are looking to make the most of the last test and begin the year in the best way possible.”

Tetsuhiro Kuwata

HRC General Manager

“2024 is a special year as we celebrate 30 years collaborating with Repsol and enter a new era with renewable fuels. Inside Honda HRC we have been working very hard in order to deliver a package to both Joan Mir and Luca Marini that they can be competitive on. Both riders are young, hungry and are already providing clear feedback for further improvements. It will be another season of developments, of working together with our riders, partners, sponsors, engineers and team members as we strive to improve.”

Marcos Fraga

Director of Communications and Corporate Marketing at Repsol

“This is not just any season. It marks the entry of renewable fuels into the MotoGP World Championship. In this way, top competition continues to be the best test bed to improve our fuels, which then reach our service stations and our customers. In MotoGP, we have the challenge of creating, together with our partner Honda, the best renewable engine-fuel combination with the aim of achieving sporting excellence and also the highest quality in our products.”

Since Don Emde’s first win for Yamaha in 1972, we’ve won 27 times, and every one of them has been special to our brand. We are very excited to have Xavi join our team for this effort. He is a very talented and fierce competitor with a winning mindset. Attack Performance has a proven track record at the 200 where every team member makes a difference in the run to the checkered flag.”

Richard Stanboli – Attack Performance Progressive Yamaha Racing Team Manager

“We welcome Xavi to our pre-season Daytona 200 race team. The race is always fun and a nice warmup for the Superbike season. We are fortunate to have Xavi step in for Cam and race our Yamaha R6. He showed us all last year that he is very capable, easily winning the Supersport Championship. We are excited to see what he can do with the Yamaha R6. The race will be fun, but more importantly, we’re going there to win.”

Xavi Fores – Attack Performance Progressive Yamaha Racing Team Manager

“I’m very excited to race the Daytona 200 for a second time and this time with the iconic Attack Yamaha Team. I’m very happy to join them and really highly motivated to achieve a strong result together. I’ve seen the Attack team fighting for victory with the Yamaha R6 several times in Daytona, and I can’t wait to get on the bike. It is going to be challenging with a new bike and team, but I know how well the team works, and I’m going to put my World Endurance experience into it as well to bring a strong result back home. I want to thank Yamaha U.S. for the opportunity to ride for them and Richard for trusting me with the ride.”

Attack Performance Progressive Yamaha Racing to Field Daytona 200 Effort with Fores

MARIETTA, Ga. – February 13, 2024 – Attack Performance Progressive Yamaha Racing is excited to announce that Xavi Fores will head their campaign for top honors aboard the Yamaha R6 at this year’s 82nd running of the Daytona 200. The 2023 MotoAmerica Supersport Champion will fill in for Cameron Petersen, who is focusing his efforts on returning to 100% [fitness] for the 2024 MotoAmerica Superbike season.

Fores brings with him a wealth of experience from both World and National Superbike Championships, as well as the Endurance World Championship. Last year, the Spaniard enjoyed a successful debut season in the MotoAmerica Supersport Championship, earning nine wins en route to securing the crown at the penultimate round at the Circuit of The Americas.

Since MotoAmerica took stewardship of the legendary endurance race in 2022, the team has entered their potent Yamaha R6 and enjoyed podium success as a one-off effort during the pre-season before shifting back to the main objective of defending their MotoAmerica Superbike Championship.

Tom Halverson – Yamaha Racing Assistant Department Manager for YMUS

“Yamaha is very proud of its record as the winningest manufacturer at the iconic Daytona 200.
