MotoGP: Rins Will Try To Ride At Sachsenring

ALEX RINS MAKES HIS RETURN THIS WEEKEND IN GERMANY

Team Suzuki Ecstar and the MotoGP™ World Championship are preparing for another dose of back-to-back rounds following a short break after the Mugello-Catalunya double header.

The first stop will the Sachsenring circuit in Germany, where Alex Rins will make a tentative comeback following injury and Joan Mir aims to build on his championship points with another strong finish.

During the build-up for the Catalan GP on June 3rd, Rins suffered a crash while cycling around the Circuit of Barcelona-Catalunya. He was diagnosed by Doctor Xavier Mir with an “articular fracture of the right distal radius with a small displacement and high inflammation”. He underwent surgery at the Universitari Dexeus Hospital in Barcelona which saw the successful fixation of two screws. Two days later he began rehabilitation and gentle training and he has now been cleared to ride.

On Wednesday morning, June 16th, Rins revisited the Universitari Dexeus Hospital to undergo some checks and his stitches were removed before travelling to Sachsenring. Doctor Xavier Mir said: “After removing the stitches and checking his wrist we consider the mobility of the injury is pretty good and he will try to race in Germany. Of course he could suffer some pain during the sessions and he might need some physiotherapy”.

In the past, both Suzuki’s riders have achieved some strong results at this technical track, with Mir taking victory in the Moto3 class in 2017 and following it up with second a year later in Moto2. In his debut MotoGP season in 2019 he achieved seventh at the circuit, but Germany was missed off last year’s disrupted calendar. Rins has enjoyed two podiums here in the past, also in the Moto3 and Moto2 classes.

A feature of the MotoGP™ calendar for the past 23 years, Sachsenring is considered by many to be one of the Grand Prix ‘classics’. One of the most prominent features was added in 2001 and it’s known as the ‘waterfall’, turn 11’s plunging downhill right-hander creates a spectacle for fans but a challenge for mechanics and engineers.

Situated in leafy-green Saxony, the circuit’s location in the far east of Germany makes an ideal meeting place for fans from across central and eastern Europe. In a ‘usual’ season this would mean a huge number of spectators adding to the atmosphere, but sadly this year the grandstands will remain empty.

Curiosity – GP of Germany: It is the second slowest track on the calendar, using full gas, or wide open throttle, for only 15% of a hot lap. It’s also the shortest track in the Championship at just 3700 m.

Joan Mir:

“It will be good to ride in Germany again, I was here in my rookie season in MotoGP and I did well, but obviously we missed out on coming here last year. It’s a circuit I like, it’s quite technical with a lot of ups and downs and blind corners. There are far more left turns that right, so it’s important to make up the difference in the lefts. Tyre management is important, and you have to be very precise with your lines. There are not many good overtaking spots, but there’s the first corner and also just after the waterfall section, although in general it’s a hard track to pass at. I’m looking forward to trying for a strong result.”

Alex Rins:

“I went to see Doctor Mir for some checks and I feel quite well. He took out the stitches and the bone seems almost fixed. I have some pain when moving my wrist, so I will keep working on my recovery during these days. In any case, I will try to give it my all. We didn’t race in Sachsenring last year, so I’m really looking forward to getting back on track here in Germany. I’m very pleased to be back with the team; I can’t wait to see them all and return to racing with my GSX-RR.”

Shinichi Sahara – Project Leader & Team Director:

“We’re glad to see Alex Rins back on track this weekend after his injury and surgery in Catalunya. It will be tricky for him to come back at full strength, but he has already started his rehabilitation and the injury is healing well. This is quite a physical circuit for the riders, despite the short lap, so it won’t be easy for him but we know he is ready to push hard and recover from this bad patch. Joan Mir has had some nice consistent finishes during the last races, and we’re confident that he can continue to build on this success. We had a test after the race in Catalunya and we’ve worked on some small but useful adjustments which could help us in our quest. Sachsenring is not an easy track but we’re feeling ready for the weekend.”

Duran Doubles in Lucas Oil Products WERA West Formula One Races At Willow Springs

by Michael Gougis

Chris Duran dusted off his BMW S1000RR and stormed to a pair of wins in the Formula One races at the Lucas Oil Products WERA West Sportsman Series doubleheader at Willow Springs International Raceway.

Duran, semi-retired but always up for the challenge of racing at the fast 2.5-mile main track at Willow, got his Dunlop-shod Duran Racing/Dream Racing machine to the line just ahead of David Price, who led and then harried Duran all the way on his Tuned Industries BPR Racing Yamaha YZF-R1. Terry Heard took third both times out on his Cha-Cha-Cha Motorsports backed, Pirelli-shod Kawasaki ZX-10R.

While Duran entered only the Formula One races, both Price and Heard were on the grid multiple times and came away with first-place hardware of their own.

Price took his Yamaha to the victories in the A Superbike races on both days. On Saturday, Price finished ahead of Heard and Thomas Asseo, Co-CEO of the Fresh n’ Lean meal delivery company. (While Asseo was racing at Willow, Jake Gagne was taking the Fresh n’ Lean Attack Performance Yamaha Racing YZF-R1 to a pair of wins in MotoAmerica Superbike competition at Road America.) On Sunday, Price crossed the line ahead of Heard and Cesar Meza.

Heard won both A Superstock races, finishing ahead of Ruben Soto and Rayme Jelski on Saturday and ahead of Soto and Lee McNutt on Sunday.

Mookie Wilkerson ran the mediumweight Superbike table over the weekend, taking the B Superbike and C Superbike wins on Saturday and Sunday.

Australian Superbike: Series Racing At Hidden Valley Next Weekend

ASBK Ready To Rumble In The Valley

This weekend’s round of the mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul (ASBK), is the first time since 2018 that the premier national class has visited the challenging Hidden Valley Raceway, and all riders are ready to rumble in Darwin on the magnificent layout.

This is also the first time that the Alpinestars Superbike class in almost a decade have shared the stage with Supercars as part of this weekend’s Merlin Darwin Triple Crown.

Hidden Valley Raceway may be short in distance at 2.8km, but it is extremely demanding requiring precision, commitment, aggression, and courage from riders for a good lap of the circuit that many consider one of the very best in Australia.

The 1km long main straight starts the challenge, topping nearly 300kmph before the bravery of late braking takes over for the critical turn one. From there it is a charge over the undulating variations of the track to the daunting right-hand, turn five, before another hard braking spot at turn 6, then the charge over the last half of the track through one of the most confronting corners in Australia at turn 10. It is an intense corner to get correct, for the final part of the lap, but extremely easy to misjudge, and run out of bitumen. From there the next three corners are basically straight-lined into the final turn 14 where the drag race begins again.

The ASBK Championship first visited the track in the late ‘90s and has visited sporadically over the years.

ASBK returned in 2010 for four successive years before a mid-decade hiatus with a return of all the championship classes in 2017 and 2018.

The 12 races over those six visits have produced six different winners, with four of them all in with a chance this weekend.

The most successful rider at Hidden Valley is three-times Australian Superbike Champion, Josh Waters.

Josh was scintillating in his performances when he won five of the six races from 2010-12, riding a Suzuki, although he didn’t race here in 2013 as he was competing in the British Superbike Championship.

On his return to Australia, he added two more to his tally when the championship returned in 2017, and he smashed his own lap record by over a second (1:05.986), on his way to his third title that year.

This year, he is racing for Kawasaki BC Performance on a brand new ZX-10R that is in the early stages of development. Waters will no doubt take inspiration from his team-mate’s results here in 2018, as Bryan Staring aboard the BC Performance machine finished second and third and has been on the podium a total of four times at Hidden Valley.

2018 was a watershed year for ASBK at Hidden Valley with moments of history created over that particular weekend. The major standout of that year was the appearance of three-times World Superbike Champion, Troy Bayliss on his DesmoSport Ducati Panigale, and he proved that there was plenty of hunger left in the man that turned 50-years-old that year.

In qualifying for the event, Bayliss staked an early claim as he set the fastest ever lap for a motorcycle around the track (1:05.601), then in the opening race, led every lap in an exceptional battle with two-times Australian Champion, Troy Herfoss (Penrite Racing Honda CBR1000RR) and 2010 champion, Bryan Staring, to break through for his maiden win and an historic victory in the Championship.

Bayliss went oh-so-close to claiming the double win. He and Herfoss had another Herculean battle that went down to the final laps.  Slicing and dicing for the lead, with less than four laps remaining, Bayliss hit a false-neutral in his bike as he barreled into the turn 6 hairpin and ran off track briefly. In his charge back, he overcooked it going into the extremely daunting turn 10 and dropped back to seventh. Herfoss won the race and broke the race lap record in the process (1:05.904), from Staring with Wayne Maxwell – riding for Yamaha – in third.

Those minor mistakes by Bayliss put a dent in his Championship hopes and graphically demonstrated the extremely thin line that overshadows every race at Hidden Valley and how precise, and inch-perfect, one must be.

Bayliss finished third overall in the Championship behind 2018 Champion, Herfoss with Maxwell in second place, just three points ahead of the mercurial Bayliss.

Bayliss will be otherwise engaged this weekend looking after his son, Oli, in his rookie year in the ASBK Championship on the DesmoSport Ducati but the usual suspects will be there also.

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that Oli could end up on the podium as he has finished fourth in his second race on the Ducati 1098V4R.

Most of the leading contenders in this year’s title chase have tasted the victory champagne in the tropics and it is anyone’s guess who will rise to the occasion in the two races at Hidden Valley this weekend.

In the four races held this year in the mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul, the wins have been equally shared between defending ASBK champion Wayne Maxwell on the Boost Mobile with K-tech Ducati Panigale V4R, and his fiercest rival and very good mate, Troy Herfoss on the Penrite Honda.

It has been the Herfoss and Maxwell show this year with the pair sharing the wins at two-apiece with some close proximity but fair racing that will be remembered for years, but this track rewards horsepower and handling in equal measure so it opens up the challenge to the rivals that is led by Oli’s teammate, 2019 Champion Mike Jones, who sits third in the title chase.

Maxwell and Herfoss have both won at the venue with Maxwell a further four podium places, and Herfoss has three podium finishes. The other current rider that has won at Hidden Valley is Glenn Allerton on the Maxima Racing Oils BMW.

Allerton is another rider with three ASBK titles and after a wretched couple of seasons afflicted by injury, is back to his race pace and is sure to have the BMW on song with his rivals.

There are a few others worth keeping a close watch on; Unitech Racing’s Arthur Sissis is a leading privateer. Due to his experienced and success in Speedway he is a gun starter and is often the leader at the first turn. Also, since his switch to Yamaha this year, his race consistency has improved dramatically.

Allerton’s teammate, Lachlan Epis, has improved at every outing and qualified fourth for the rounds at Winton and Wakefield Park. Once he finds the missing piece in the jigsaw of sustained race pace he will be knocking on the door of a podium, and that could well be this weekend.

Leading the way this year for Yamaha will be 2018 Australian Supersport Champion, Yamaha Racing Team’s Cru Halliday. Halliday won both races here in 2018 in dominant fashion and now that he is back on a 1000cc, factory-supported machine will no doubt be keeping his rivals honest.

Besides a championship battle between riders and manufacturers there is also the bragging rights in the tyre war. The majority of the field run Pirelli rubber while Herfoss is the leading rider using the French Michelin tyres and the Kawasaki BC Performance team run on Dunlops.

The action promises to be as hot as the tropical sun that will shine on the drama that is sure to unfold. If you have never seen Superbike racing before you are about to witness something very special.

Fans can catch every practice and qualifying session on Fox Sports Australia. The Saturday and Sunday ASBK race action will also feature as part of Channel 7’s free-to-air coverage.

MotoAmerica: Riders Test At Brainerd’s Competition Road Course

Several MotoAmerica riders and teams traveled straight from this past weekend’s event at Road America to Minnesota to test Tuesday and Wednesday, June 15-16, at Brainerd International Raceway (BIR) in preparation for the July 30-August 1 event at the track.

The test – held during a Zalusky Advanced Riding School (ZARS) & Track Day — was attended by: Calishine Racing’s Aden Thao and Owen Williams; Fresh N’ Lean Attack Performance Yamaha’s Jake Gagne and Josh Herrin; Jackson Blackmon Racing’s Jackson Blackmon; M4 ECSTAR Suzuki’s Wyatt Farris, Bobby Fong, Sean Dylan Kelly, Sam Lochoff, and Cameron Petersen; North East Cycle Outlet Racing’s Benjamin Smith; Scott Powersports KTM’s Tyler Scott; Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati New York’s Loris Baz; and Westby Racing’s Jack Roach and Mathew Scholtz, among others.

Fresh N’ Lean Attack Performance Yamaha paid for exclusive sessions during the event, while most of the other riders rode during normal track day sessions.

For most, if not all of the riders, it was their first time riding on the 2.5-mile, 13-turn Competition Road Course MotoAmerica will race on later this summer.

In the past, AMA Pro Road Racing competed on BIR’s 3.1-mile, 10-turn Donnybrooke Course with its nearly-mile-long front straightaway and ultra-high-speed Turn One, but AMA Pro Road Racing stopped coming to BIR in 2005. Then in 2008, BIR combined sections of the original road course with some sections of new pavement to create the new Competition Road Course.

The new course does not use the drag strip front straightaway, making it useable in wet and dry conditions, and the elimination of the wall-lined final corner and the super-fast Turn One theoretically improves safety.

Official lap times were not available from the test.

“Obviously, we’ve heard about the really fast first couple of turns,” Gagne, the MotoAmerica Superbike Championship point leader, told Roadracingworld.com, “but there’s a chicane they added that’s really slow and funky. It’s also a track day today, so they have some cones set up in the track. That is a little weird.

“The whole old section of the track, the part that they used to run, that part is really awesome. The [new] infield stuff is really small, really tight, kind of funky, and there’s some walls here and there. It’ll be interesting to see what it’s like when we come back to race here, but it’s weird. It’ll be a weird track to race at, that’s for sure.”

There will be another opportunity for MotoAmerica riders to test at BIR as there will be another ZARS track day event at BIR June 26-27 with exclusive sessions for MotoAmerica racers.

CRA (California): Prince, Riser Win At Inaugural Event

Riser and Prince Clean House at Opening Round of CRA

[Buttonwillow, CA] California RoadRace Association (CRA) held its inaugural round of racing at Buttonwillow Raceway Park June 12-13, 2021. Racers from Northern and Southern California provided healthy grids for a great weekend of racing.

CRA’s “Racers First” focus was felt throughout the paddock all weekend. CRA licensed racers received high-quality swag in addition to generous payouts and prizes from sponsors.

Bryce Prince started the RIDERZ LAW GOLD CUP from pole position, averaged mid 1:45s and ran away with the race. Rounding out the podium, Ben Hodges took second in front of Grant Boldt. And just to put an exclamation on his dominance, Bryce also went on to win the TRACKDAZ 1000 SUPERBIKE and the CTML CONSULTANTS 1000 SUPERSPORT races.

15-year old Jasmine Nichols won the FEEL LIKE A PRO 400 SUPERBIKE in impressive fashion. As a rising star, she has aspirations of gridding up in MotoAmerica in the near future. The Feel Like a Pro team was highly visible in all the 400 class races with lots of the familiar blue FLAP bikes on the grids.

Daniel Riser evidently showed up to win. Which he did spectacularly with 1st place trophies in the PIRELLI 600 SUPERSPORT, 600 SUPERBIKE and the 20-lap 61 DTC 1000 GT.

As with any new series, the event was not without its hiccups, but CRA has maintained an open feedback and communication loop with the racers and is focused on continual improvement. “It feels like we had our wedding and gave birth all in the same weekend!” said CRA Co-Founder Gigi Chow

“I have said that for our sport to survive and thrive, racing organizations need to be actively helping it grow,” said CRA Co-Founder Daniel Mole. “Our first event is under our belt and solidified that CRA is doing just that. We will continue to look for ways to improve and provide a place for racers at all levels to learn and grow.”

CRA drew over 105 racers for the two-day race weekend, with more than 30% of that total racing for the very first time.

“The number of new racers we had on the grid proves what I’ve been saying for years: ‘There are a whole lot of racers out there… they just don’t know they are racers … yet’. And our goal is to make CRA a welcoming, exciting and great place to race,” said CRA Co-Founder Dustin Coyner.

With the 2021 race schedule cut short due to the delay in completion of the new track at Buttonwillow Raceway, CRA intends to put everything they have into what they’ve got and will be firing strong in 2022.

For more information on CRA visit their website at www.race-cra.com. Get licensed and let’s go racing. #areyoucra #racecra #iamcra

CRA would like to thank their sponsors for their support which extends into the 2022 race season:

AHRMA Planning More MotoFest Vintage Events In 2021 And 2022

VINTAGE MOTORCYCLE ENTHUSIASTS FLOCKED TO AHRMA CLASSIC MOTOFEST® IN THE HEARTLAND

(TOPEKA, KS, June 15, 2021) – Old motorcycles brought new sights and sounds to Heartland Motorsports Park in Topeka, KS during the Memorial Day weekend, May 28-30.

The American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) Classic MotoFest® in the Heartland featured more than 1,350 vintage motorcycle entries for road racing, motocross, observed trials and cross-country competitions and more than 50 entries for the highly anticipated Bike Show.

Additionally, hundreds of spectators attended the Classic Drags, sponsored by Luke’s Racecraft.

Other highlights of the AHRMA Classic MotoFest® in the Heartland included a swap meet that stretched out longer than a football field and a myriad of family activities and entertainment that engaged the crowds throughout the weekend.

“In addition to all the local residents that came out for the fun, we saw visitors from all over Kansas and Missouri as well as from across the country,” said AHRMA Executive Director, Curtis Comer. “We are thankful to Visit Topeka and our other regional partners that supported us in creating a great family-friendly motorsport event here in the heartland. We can’t wait to build on this year’s success.”

CCS: Halasz Wins Eight Races At Summit Point

Halasz Wins Doubles at Summit Point

Championship Cup Series Mid-Atlantic and Southeast Regions

Summit Point Motorsports Park, West Virginia

June 12-13, 2021

The Championship Cup Series Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions met during a stormy weekend at Summit Point Motorsports Park for a Twin Sprints event with 36 total races and a chance for double wins in each class.

Antal Halasz wrapped up the weekend with a grand total of eight wins, and two second place finishes, putting him in the spotlight as the winningest expert racer of the event.  Halasz set the tone for the weekend with his first win Saturday’s first race, the 25 minute-long GTO, after taking over the lead from early frontrunner Giorgi Giorgadze.  Behind him, Alan Nelson had maneuvered through traffic to claim second place and set his sights on the leader.  The two swapped positions and battled for the lead for the remainder of the race with Halasz finishing with the advantage and claiming the first victory of the day.

Halasz won both rounds of the Unlimited Grand Prix race on his Yamaha YZF-R1 after nailing early leads in each race, finishing ahead of Brian Grasso and Antonio Rodriguez on Saturday, and battling it out again with Nelson on Sunday, claiming the win again with Nelson and Rodriguez topping off the podium.

Halasz also won both rounds of the Unlimited Supersport race, again swapping positions for the lead with Nelson, and again finishing first with Nelson and Rodriguez rounding off the podium in both races.  Halasz also won the Unlimited Superbike and Heavyweight Superbike races on Saturday, and the Heayweight Supersport race on Sunday.  Halasz is supported by Spring Scaffolding, Vortex Racing, GoPro, Hotbodies Bodywork, and Pitbull Products.

The Twin Sprints event produced several multiple race winners with a handful of standout competitors.  In the Lightweight classes, Arthur Diaz went home with six victories, winning the GTL, Classic Unlimited on Sunday, and both rounds of the Lightweight F40 and LW GP races.  He also finished second in the Classic Unlimited and both rounds of the Classic Middleweight races.  Diaz is supported by Innovative Motorcycle Research, Bridgestone Tires, Cycle Gear, Sunoco Fuels and Evans Cooling.

Justin Jones dominated the front spot in the expert middleweight classes on his Kawasaki ZX-6R, running undefeated in all six of his races.  Jones won the GTU and the first Heavyweight Supersport race, and both rounds of the Middleweight Superbike and Middleweight Supersport classes.  Jones is supported by VP Fuels, EBC Brakes, Michelin Tires, MRP Motorsports, and Kawasaki.

Luigi Mora was a big winner again, also with six first place finishes.  Mora won the GT500 and Supersport 500 races on Saturday, and both rounds of the Superbike 500 and Moto 3 races.  The Luigi Motorsport rider is supported by Spear Racing, Bigun Motorsport, Sinister Racing, Vortex Racing, and Hustle Hard Racing.

Robert Johnson was the winningest racer in the amateur ranks, with eight total wins.  Johnson finished first in the Ulralight Superbike, Thunderbike, and Lightweight Superbike races on Saturday, the GTL on Sunday, and in both rounds of the Lightweight F40 and Lightweight GP races.  He is supported by Johnson Engine Tech, Angie’s Silver Legacy, and Honda.

Grant Lancaster was a standout winner with victories in seven of his 12 races in the amateur Middleweight and Unlimited Classes, all onboard his Yamaha YZF-R6. .  Lancaster won the first running of the Amateur Unlimited Grand Prix race, and also finished first in the Heavyweight Superbike race on Saturday.  He won the Middleweight Superbike race on Sunday, and both rounds of the Middleweight Supersport and Heavyweight Supersport races.  Lancaster is supported by Bauce Racing, Fresh Oil & Co, Moto XT, Team Pro Motion, and Vortex Racing.

The Championship Cup Series Mid-Atlantic region is scheduled to race again this weekend, June 18-19th, at New Hampshire Motor Speedway for a Twin Sprints weekend along with the Northeast Motorcycle Road Racing (NEMRR) Louden Classic

The Championship Cup Series Southeast Region is scheduled to compete next at NC Bike July 31st – August 1st, for another Twin Sprints event featuring ASRA Sprint races.

AIMEXPO ROLLING INTO LAS VEGAS FOR 2022 SHOW

Tucker Powersports partnership expands show’s dealer training and support

IRVINE, Calif., June 15, 2021 – The Motorcycle Industry Council’s American International Motorcycle Expo has selected the world famous Las Vegas Convention Center for AIMExpo 2022, scheduled for January 19-21, 2022. Tucker Powersports will co-locate their annual dealer show at the venue, creating the largest and most important powersports industry event in the country.

“AIMExpo 2022 will be the first time our industry gathers together in more than two years, and we are working to make this a can’t miss event for everyone in powersports,” said Erik Pritchard, president and CEO of the Motorcycle Industry Council. “In the two years since we last met, our industry managed to thrive under the most challenging of circumstances. We are building a show that will help dealers continue this success, no matter what the future holds.”

New for 2022, AIMExpo will be partnering with Tucker Powersports and other industry leaders to create an educational line-up that offers basic and advanced sessions designed to increase dealership profitability, community visibility, and efficiency. Focusing on the business of your business, AIMExpo Dealer Education will help drive door swings by sharing content that speaks to community engagement, business management, and best practices for retail operations.

“By continuing to partner with Tucker Powersports, the nation’s premier powersports distributor, both AIMExpo and Tucker will be able to deliver exponential value to dealers and enable them to efficiently connect and conduct business,” said Cinnamon Kernes, vice president marketing and events.

In addition to the combined educational offerings available through AIMExpo and Tucker, nearly 300,000 square feet of adrenaline-filled exhibit space will feature more than 300 of the industry’s top vehicle manufacturers, aftermarket manufacturers, distributors, and service providers showcasing their latest products and services, along with show specials designed to kick-off the powersports industry’s order writing season.  Dealers who are customers of Tucker Powersports will enjoy a separate check-in experience, VIP activities, an exclusive lounge on the show floor and much more.

“With COVID pushing us apart for many months, we’re happy that we can help bring dealers together to learn, to experience great products and to reconnect with friends,” said Tucker Powersports President and CEO Marc McAllister. “The powersports industry is all about people joining together to do what they love, and Tucker has always put a high value on building great relationships with our dealers.”

After more than two years since the last AIMExpo, an industry reunion of this scale wouldn’t be complete without networking events celebrating the people and passion that make this industry great. AIMExpo’s opening day will feature a general session focused on the year ahead, market expansion and how the powersports industry can unite for future growth. Following the general session there will be an epic industry party kicking off the 2022 buying season. Finally, after two solid days of education, exhibits, and networking, the show will close out in true Las Vegas style; Johnny Lewis and flat track racing return to AIMExpo for Fast Friday with celebrity, industry, and e-class racing.
