Seven Up For Record Breaker Hickman

Following on from his record-breaking performance on Thursday where he took a double victory and upped the outright lap record, Smiths Racing rider Peter Hickman continued where he left off at the 2019 fonaCAB Ulster Grand Prix by scorching to an unbeaten five wins at the 7.4-mile Dundrod track today to make history with a seven-win haul.

After the Lincolnshire ace took the opening Supersport victory on Thursday aboard the Trooper Beer by Smiths Triumph for the Gloucester-based team, on his way to winning the opening Superbike race on the Smiths Racing BMW S1000RR, he set a new outright lap record at 136.415mph to reclaim the title of the fastest road racer in the world.

Hoping to continue his success, the 32 year old from Waddington near Lincoln got his day underway in damp conditions aboard the Smiths Racing BMW S1000RR in the Superstock class and followed that up with further victories in the Supersport and Superbike races to take his tally to three for the day and five for the meeting.

But Hickman wasn’t finished and was made to work hard for his sixth victory in the final Supersport race when the filler cap on the Trooper Beer by Smiths Triumph came loose on the opening lap covering him in fuel.

As the final race of the day took to the grid, Hickman again was in a class of his own and took an easy win to equal Phillip McCallen’s five victories in a day going back to 1996 and in doing so, became the first man to win an unprecedented seven races in a meeting to rewrite the history books.

The end result is that Hickman, who only made his Ulster GP debut six years ago, is now equal fourth with Bruce Anstey in the all-time winners’ list with 13 victories with only McCallen (14), Ian Lougher (18) and the legendary Joey Dunlop on 24 ahead of him.

Peter Hickman: “It’s been an awesome week and the team have been phenomenal. The bikes have been faultless, and I can’t thank them enough for what they do for me. They’ve built some awesome bikes and although I try to win every race, to have actually achieved that and end the week with seven wins from seven starts is something I never really thought I’d do. Conditions have been tricky today, but the organisers made all the right calls and I tried to get to the front as soon as I could in each race. Once I’d managed to do that, I was able to pick all my own lines and hit all my markers but whilst I was able to make the break in all of the big bike races, I knew it would be difficult to do that in the Supersport races. The Triumph had really good corner speed and handles perfectly so to win both of those races in the manner I did was brilliant. It’s just been a superb week and to create history like we have is testament to everyone at Smiths Racing.”

Darren Jones, Team Co-ordinator: “It’s been an unbelievable week and although we were fairly confident of Peter Hickmanour chances on the big bikes, we never thought we’d be as dominant as what we have been, and Peter’s been phenomenal. We’ve been working hard all year with the Smiths BMW S1000RR, both at BSB and on the roads, and each time he gets on it, he gets more and more comfortable and quicker. We knew the Supersport races would be a lot more difficult especially against an exceptional 600cc rider like Lee Johnston, but he fully utilised his experience and race craft to win those too. To come here and take pole position in every class, win seven races from seven starts and set the outright lap record is simply phenomenal and to create history both from a rider and team perspective is a tremendous achievement. I’ve said it before, but I think we have the best team in the paddock, and we’ve all had an enjoyable week working with each other. Everyone’s worked incredibly hard, so they all deserve the success we’ve had and full credit to the organisers as well. They made the right decisions at the right times and kept us all informed, so we’re pleased to have been part of a great meeting.”

The Smiths Racing BMW team are back in action at round eight of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Cadwell Park next weekend with Hickman looking to consolidate his Showdown chances at his local track.
