Thornton and Madama dominate PPIR at MRA Round 2

Fountain, CO, June 8, 2021 – The second race of the 2021 MRA Championship Series took place at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, CO over the weekend of June 5-6. PPIR is the shortest track on the MRA calendar with the infield course being only 1.3 miles long.   The oval banking and dropping onto the apron area of the track makes for some very exciting racing with Turn 1 being one of the highest speed corners of the Colorado series.

The weather for the weekend was in the low 90’s as the area is finally shaking off the winter. The novice, supersport, endurance and superstreet events went off without a hitch on Saturday.  Saturday afternoon a handful of racers were already getting below the 1:00 minute mark which meant that you had to be in that range to have any chance at a good Race of the Rockies finish.

The start of RoR saw Nick Dremel take the holeshot for the open class and lead the race for the first 4 laps.  In tow was Mike Applegate, Ray Thornton, Jim Hinton, and Joe Resta. By lap 3, Dremel, Applegate, and Thornton had pulled free of the rest of the field while clicking off mid to high 57’s.  On lap 5, Applegate got by Dremel to take the lead. Thornton followed up to take second on lap 6 still with Dremel in the mix. After the half way point, it became clear that Thornton was running down Applegate and on lap 12, Thornton made his move and solidified the lead and the win. Applegate maintained second ahead of Dremel, who made his first appearance on the Race of the Rockies GTO podium!

In Race of the Rockies GTU, Jason Madama took the lead and proceeded to mix it up with the liter bikes for most of the race. Brian Dobrowolski got a great start and tailed Madama the first few laps before Cameron Lee got by on lap 4 to take over second. From there, the three separated themselves from the remainder of the GTU field while dealing with the larger bikes on this very tight track. Lee was on a mission and turned very consistent 59’s the entire race. By doing so, Lee was able to sneak up behind Madama who had relaxed the pace to 1:00. With 2 laps to go, Lee put a pass on Madama for the lead, but was unable to make it last to the checker as Madama responded with a couple of low 59’s. On the box, it was Madama for the win with Lee second and Dobrowolski third.

Next up, the MRA returns to High Plains Raceway in Byers, CO for Round 3 on June 26-27. This time an abbreviated course configuration will be used. It will be either the North configuration or the West configuration depending on some repairs being done to the track. Once again, the SuperStreet class will be held on Saturday afternoon, giving street riders a chance to try real track motorcycle road racing with minimal cost & preparation.  See https://www.mra-racing.org/superstreet/superstreet-information/ for details.

The Motorcycle Roadracing Association is dedicated to promoting safe and competitive motorcycle road racing events for enthusiasts in Colorado and the surrounding area. For more information go to http://www.mra-racing.org/.
