Jayson Uribe consolidates his lead in the Formula Pacific championship, while Deion Campbell and Brandon Crawford triumph with well-deserved wins.

After a brief stopover at the AFM’s traditional play area, Sonoma Raceway, the club was back in Willows, California at Thunderhill Raceway Park for the penultimate round of 2019 on September 21 and 22.

With the MotoAmerica season finale taking place at Barber Motorsports Park on teh same weekend, the likes of Andrew Lee, Braeden Ortt, Rocco Landers, Cory Ventura, and Chad Lewin were out of the way, paving the path for some new class winners.

On the 400’s, it was Marc Edwards who owned the day. Edwards started on form with a win in 400 SBK, the first race on Sunday morning, and adding first place trophies in the later Lightweight Twins and Formula Three races. Brendan Ketelsen finished runner up in the races mentioned above, before prevailing over Edwards in the final race for the 400’s, the Calishine Ninja Cup.

Race two on Sunday, Open Superbike, gave the crowd its biggest surprise of the weekend: the defeat of Uribe at the hands of Campbell and Wyatt Farris. Campbell took the win aboard his Kawasaki ZX-10R in front of Wyatt Farris, also aboard a Kawasaki, and Uribe in third place on his Honda. The three racers crossed the line just 0.16 second apart, setting the stage for a three-way battle that would continue throughout Sunday. Campbell, who is always willing to ride hard from lap one impressed all, including Uribe who took Race 1 as a learning experience. “I had an opportunity to study my competition in Race 1,” said Uribe, “which helped show me where I needed to place my focus for the main event, Formula Pacific.” Campbell would go on to win a second race on Sunday, defeating Farris in Open Superstock.

In Formula Pacific, the same three riders stood on the podium. However, this race looked a little different. Uribe, this time took the win convincingly, clearing off on lap one before settling in and holding a 10-second-plus lead for most of the race. Speaking with Uribe post-race, he was delighted with his results. “Overall, I am very satisfied with the weekend,” said Uribe. “My crew and I talked a lot about strategies and tactics. In the end, it paid off. My plan was to either hang back and avoid a battle, if possible, or check out immediately. I saw the opportunity to check out, and that’s what I did. I am super pumped to be leading the points in all three of my classes. I am going to try and play it safe and consistent next round.”

Second place man Farris performed well on his ZX-10R, a plain white bike that appeared to be prepared by Graves Motorsports. Farris was there keeping Campbell and Uribe honest all weekend and will be fighting for the top step at round 7 in October.

As has been the case all season, the 600 class saw the largest grids. It was also where we saw the best performance of the weekend. Brandon Crawford took a new to him, but far from new 2009 ZX-6R, and raced it to three wins on Sunday. Crawford had never thrown a leg over the machine before Saturday and struggled to get the machine set up to his liking. Despite the challenge, Crawford rose to the top of the field and defeated the likes of Stephen Rue, Daniel Riser, Sam Gluss and Berto Woolridge in the three marquis 600 classes: Superbike, Superstock and Formula One. So far in 2019, the AFM 600 classes have been dominated by the Graves Motorsports Kawasaki’s, despite Ortt and Valentin Debise not being present at Round 6, the winning run for “team green” continued.

Riser once again impressed with his consistency, adding to his mountain of hardware with third-place finishes in all three classes. Rue rode to second place in Formula One as well as Superbike. Club president Woolridge took a second place in 600 Superstock, in addition to his wins in 750 Superbike, 750 Superstock and Formula 40 Middleweight.

The AFM will be back in action for the seventh and final round of the season on October 19-20 at Thunderhill Raceway Park.

AFM Titles In Sight For Jayson Uribe After Thunderhill Raceway Triumph!

A mere eight weeks after a terrifying crash that saw Jayson Uribe in need of a bicep repair the young Californian was back on track at Thunderhill Raceway, taking a 3rd and two wins after starting from Pole Position to head the overall standings in the three categories in which he competes.

Aboard his CBR1000RR Honda machine, Jayson once again showed his raw natural talent, despite still only being at 75% full fitness and is now focused on the next round of the AFM Series, where a finish in the points should see him wrap up the titles!
Uribe’s commitment to the cause is visible for all to see.

Unable to race at Sonoma Raceway, when MotoAmerica was in town, he joined Michael Hill and Robbie Floyd on TV commentary, fully aware of the importance of media and sponsor promotion. His intentions back then were clear, to return to the track and continue with his AFM Championship quest. With a double win and a third place finish he achieved it.

Jayson Uribe: “The weekend went pretty well at Thunderhill. We had no issues with the bike, so everything went mechanically to plan. Also, with my fitness there were no real issues which was a weight off my mind. I had three races and qualified on Pole for all of them. In the first race I ended up in third place after getting involved in a battle that I didn’t really want to be involved in. I was trying to play it smart and avoid a hazardous situation and I ended up getting caught out. It is what it is, and we still took a podium. I learned a lot and how I needed to change my riding style for the later races. The main race – Formula Pacific – went really well. I made a good start and passed a few people into turn one and tried my best to check out. We finished with a twelve second lead and I’m super satisfied. I would have liked to have won all three, but we leave Thunderhill will the points lead in all three classes. I am excited to move onto the next round and see where things go. I will stay safe and smart, and if I finish in the points, I wrap up the titles. Big thanks to everyone who supports me.”
