Colombian Martin Cardenas will replace Michael Barnes on an M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R600 in today’s Supersport race at Infineon Raceway. Barnes crashed and broke and displaced a bone in his right wrist yesterday; the bone was set yesterday at a local hospital and Barnes will seek additional treatment at Dr. Art Ting’s medical center in Fremont, California on Monday. Cardenas, 25, has won a Spanish Championship and also raced in the 250cc World Championship, with a best finish in the top five. Cardenas qualified 20th for the AMA Supersport race at Infineon, riding a lightly modified Kawasaki ZX-6R. More, from a press release issued by M4 EMGO Suzuki: CARDENAS TO SUBSTITUTE FOR BARNES AT INFINEON RACEWAY With Michael Barnes out of Sunday’s Infineon Raceway Supersport race with a broken wrist, Martin Cardenas will substitute for Team M4 EMGO Suzuki. Cardenas, from Colombia, is 25-years old. Martin had qualified 20th for the race on a privateer machine. He has experience racing in numerous series around the world, including the 250 Grand Prix World Championship. Barnes will undergo treatment this week for a broken bone in his wrist at Dr. Art Ting’s clinic in Northern California. More, from another press release issued by M4 EMGO Suzuki: MAY ON FRONT ROW FOR INFINEON RACEWAY SUPERSTOCK Team M4 EMGO Suzuki had its share of highs and lows at Infineon Raceway on Saturday. The squad enjoyed a successful afternoon of qualifying for Sunday’s Superstock and Supersport finals, but the day ended in bitter disappointment in the Formula Xtreme contest. Michael Barnes was determined to fight for the win in the FX race after qualifying his Suzuki GSX-R600 second on the grid for the 17-lap final. Unfortunately, he never got the chance as the Floridian crashed heavily in turn two on the warm-up lap. Barnes injured his right wrist in the fall and was unable to take part in the race. He visited nearby Novato Community Hospital for x-rays. It was then confirmed that Michael had suffered a broken bone from the crash. Meanwhile, Geoff May put on an impressive display in Superstock qualifying, claiming a front-row qualifying position aboard his big-bore GSX-R1000. The Gainesville, GA resident clocked a 1:36.904 to earn the third spot on the front row for Sunday’s 17-lap race. “Qualifying went well,” May said. “I just wanted to get some seat time in the afternoon because it was our first stab at riding in the warm weather on that bike. On Friday our only session is first thing in the morning and the bike works drastically different here when the track warms up. It felt like a totally different bike and we struggled with that for a bit. The rear grip characteristics really change; I think it’s because there is a lot of rubber on the track and the heat greases it up.” He continued, “We’ve come to a conclusion about what we’re going to run for the race. We’ll make a few minor changes here and there just to fine-tune it a bit, but we’re feeling pretty good about our race set-up.” Barnes and May put in solid performances in Supersport qualifying as well. ‘Barney’ was seventh fastest at 1:38.174 in a session held before his injury, while May was right behind him, eighth best with a time of 1: 38.207. Young Californian Michael Beck improved from yesterday’s practice, cutting a second-and-a-half off his best time. The promising Beck moved up from 21st to 16th with a lap of 1:39.735. Team M4 EMGO Suzuki will take part in Sunday’s 60k Superstock and Supersport finals to conclude the Infineon Raceway weekend.
