Results Round 6 of Spanish 1000cc FX Championship From Valencia, Spain, Sunday, November 18th, 2007 De Gea Takes Third Consecutive Spanish 1000cc FX Title at Valencia Mororrad Suzuki riders Sergio Fuertes and Spanish-born American Kenny Noyes both improved their championship positions today at Valencia. Fuertes, who started fourth off the front row, was third, his first podium of the year, and moved into fifth place (actually tied in points for fourth) in the Spanish 1000cc Formula Extreme championship, while Noyes, came from 12th on the grid to finish eighth, moving up to ninth in the points table and is now engaged in a four-rider battle for sixth Former Grand Prix 500cc rider for Team Roberts Modenas, Jose David de Gea, won the penultimate round of the Spanish 1000cc Formula Extreme series on his BQR Blusens BQR Suzuki and clinched his third consecutive national title in Spain’s premier racing class. The only man who could have challenged the 30 year-old from Murcia for the title, Carmelo Morales, L’Oreal Yamaha R1, was seventh, just managing to hold off Noyes, Javier del Amor and Enrique Rocamora (L’Real Yamaha R1) on the last lap. Morales was Michelin’s top finisher on a day when Dunlop riders took the first six places. De Gea’s veteran team mate, Josep Sarda, was second and holding off Valencian local hero Fuertes to complete a Suzuki sweep of the podium. Fuertes, a veteran of two season of World Superbike competition, set the second fastest lap of the race, 1’36.008, bested only by De Gea’s amazing 1.35.336. By comparison Spain’s Ruben Xaus won race one of the World Superbike round held this spring on a Ducati 999F06 with a fastest lap of 1.36.3 and James Toseland (Ken Kate Honda) took the second race with a fastest lap of 1’35.3, while the fastest lap of the World SBK event was set by Yamaha’s Noriyuki Haga in 1’35.7. The World Superbike record at Valencia is held by Neil Hodgson (Ducati) in 1’35.007, set in 2003. In the Supersport class, Joan (that’s Catalan for Juan) Lascorz (Glaner Motocard Honda CBR600RR) beat Britain’s Graeme Gowland and Australia’s Josh Brookes, to top an all-Honda podium. Gowland, who resides in Spain, now leads Angel Rodriguez (L’Oreal Yamaha R6) by six points with a single race to run and has a strong chance of being the second foreign rider to win the Spanish Supersport Championship, a feat accomplished by Columbia’s Martin Cardenas in 2004. Once again the Spanish Supersport lap times beat the World Supersport records with Lascorz (Pirelli) lapping in 1,37.3, a full 1.3 seconds faster than the fastest lap recorded by 2007 Supersport World Champion Kenan Sofuoglu and two tenths of a second under Katsuaki Fujuwara’s WSS record at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit of the Community of Valencia. Motorrad Suzuki’s top finisher was Motorrad Suzuki’s David Bonache, eighth, and currently eighth in the points table. With Fuertes fifth and Noyes ninth in 1000cc Formula Extreme and Bonache eighth in Supersport, the Motorrad Suzuki team of Madrid has a strong chance of placing all three riders in the top ten of the ultra-competitive Spanish series. The final round of the series will be run at Jerez de la Frontera next weekend, November 24-25. Rider quotes: Sergio Fuertes: “This is my best ride of the season so far and at my home track. Now I am concentrating on moving up to fourth in Jerez and trying to give the team a win.” Kenny Noyes: “I had Morales lined up for a last lap pass, but then Rocamora made a desperate move, ran off the track and almost took me out. My biggest problem was being too conservative with my qualifying tire because starting 12th in this field is a big handicap.” Results Valencia 1000cc Formula Extreme 1. De Gea, Suzuki, 29:04.573 2.
