Daytona 200: Fans Are Back!

So far during Bike Week 2023 racing activities, it appears as if fans have come back to Daytona International Speedway for the Daytona 200 and the American Flat Track (AFT) event in large numbers. Here are some photos from the RV camping areas inside the speedway and from the parking lot during the AFT Daytona Short Track I event on Thursday evening.

MotoGP: Final Pre-Season Test Is This Weekend In Portugal

#PortimaoTest: the final countdown is on!

It’s the last chance for the field to get race ready, with just two days of testing left between our 22 riders and the 21 Grands Prix that lie ahead

We’ve had the Shakedown, we’ve seen the Sepang Test proper and we’re nearing the end of pre-season as the paddock heads for Portugal. Just two days of track action remain for the field to get in gear for the biggest season ever, with bikes back on track this weekend!

WHEN + WHERE?

The test takes place on the 11th and 12th of March at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve in Portugal. Normal track action starts at 10:00 local time (GMT) every day and lasts until 18:00. Then, from 18:00 until 18:15, there’s a Practice Start session as there was at Sepang.

HOW CAN I FOLLOW THE ACTION?

As we’ve enjoyed through pre-season, there will be Live Timing on motogp.com throughout the sessions so you can stay on top of who’s where, as well as plenty of other information about their laptimes and different runs. There’ll also be videos and reports throughout the action to make sure you don’t miss a minute.

Then, from 17:30 local time every day until 19:00, After the Flag will be live to provide a host of updates and reports from on the ground. Pitlane reporter Simon Crafar will be joined by Jack Gorst once again, and the show in Barcelona will be anchored by commentators and presenters Louis Suddaby and Neil Morrison. After the Flag will analyse all the action and bring you exclusive interviews with riders and key personnel throughout! And remember, Portugal is in GMT/UTC – not CET!

DUCATI, VR46, PRAMAC & GRESINI

The Ducati Lenovo Team may have stolen a few of the headlines in terms of novelties, but the times right at the top were whisked away by Mooney V46 Racing Team on two of the three days. Sophomore Marco Bezzecchi was quickest on Day 1, and by the end of Day 3, Luca Marini was quickest overall. That makes it both tests so far that Marini has reigned – having also been quickest in Valencia. The GP22 retains some serious chops.

That said, Ducati Lenovo Team were very hot Marini’s heels, with reigning Champion Francesco Bagnaia second overall. He had new aero on both bikes but had the downwash ducts instead of the “ground-effect” side fairings by the end of the test, whereas new teammate Enea Bastianini had one with the downwash ducts and one with the “ground-effect” lower side fairings. Bastianini also had some ominous words after ending the test fourth overall, saying they were still only at 70-75% of the potential of the new bike.

That new bike, according to Ducati Lenovo Team Manager Davide Tardozzi, will have the details fully defined in Portimão, so we best keep an eye out!

At Prima Pramac Racing, Jorge Martin was especially vocal about the step forward with the 2023 engine, and he was fifth at the end of play – very close to Bastianini. Teammate Johann Zarco spent time on the ground effect lower side fairings at the close of action in Sepang, and he didn’t seem to put in a real fast lap, ending the test in P16. We can likely expect more from Zarco soon enough.

Fabio Di Giannantonio (Gresini Racing MotoGP™), meanwhile, was another fast GP22 as he ended the test 0.019s ahead of Bezzecchi. That’s good news for Diggia as he looks to take a big step forward in 2022, and there was more good news for his new teammate too. Alex Marquez, new to the Ducati, was 0.022s off Bezzecchi in a tightly packed top ten.

APRILIA & RNF

The Sepang Test was a positive one for Aprilia Racing’s Maverick Viñales and Aleix Espargaro. Viñales was just over a tenth off Marini’s blistering pace and finished P3 across the three days, while Espargaro walked away with a P6 – but importantly, the vibes were good from the Noale camp. The main story coming into the Portimao Test is the new 2023 engine specification that Team Manager Paolo Bonora confirmed was on the agenda back in Malaysia. Look out for comments on that this weekend.

In Aprilia’s new Independent Team ranks, Raul Fernandez (RNF MotoGP™ Team) said it was the first time he’d enjoyed riding a bike since his 2021 Moto2™ title tilt. The Spaniard cut a cheerful figure in Sepang and finished in a solid P11, less than 0.5s away from Espargaro. RNF teammate and former Portuguese GP race winner, Miguel Oliveira, said he didn’t manage to extract the most potential out of his RS-GP when trying a time attack in Malaysia, hence his P15 in Sepang. Can that issue be rectified in Portimao for the home hero? Time will tell for one of 2023’s dark horses… and Oliveira was already quick in Valencia!

HONDA & LCR

This test is crucial for Honda. As many as four bikes were sat in Marc Marquez’s side of the Repsol Honda Team garage in Sepang – one 2022 bike, two 2023 bikes and a new experimental 2023 bike – as HRC searched for a direction. Team Manager Alberto Puig admitted they “clearly” aren’t where they want to be, but a hugely positive note was Marquez’s fitness. The number 93 says he expects to open the season as fully fit as can be, and raring to race. Meanwhile, new Repsol Honda recruit Joan Mir was pleased with his progress over the three days, but we’ll get the full picture of where HRC lie on Sunday evening.

Alex Rins (LCR Honda Castrol), similar to Mir, was happy with how his adaptation continued to improve in Malaysia. The duo sang from the same hymn sheet when expressing how much they’ve had to change their riding styles after their switch from Suzuki, while the experienced Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) rallied on with testing duties as he also comes back from some injury struggles.

KTM & GASGAS TECH3

One thing of note at Sepang was a different engine noise overheard from both Red Bull KTM Factory Racing machines of Brad Binder and Jack Miller, as well as the GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3 RC16 of Pol Espargaro. Will Portimao reveal more?

Espargaro ended the test as top RC16 just a smidge ahead of Binder, with Miller a little further back. Binder was on the aero update we first saw at the Shakedown, with Miller on the Valencia aero update. The South African was on lead as Miller focused on settling in and playing with geometry. It seems there’s plenty still to be decided for the Austrian factory.

Rookie Augusto Fernandez (GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3), meanwhile, seemed to be out on a new chassis and taking on more testing duty… what will we see from him in Portugal?

YAMAHA

On one hand, the Sepang Test seemed a roaring success for Yamaha. On the other, serious worries arose. The good news for Fabio Quartararo and Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™ teammate Franco Morbidelli is the 2023 engine possesses those extra few horses they’ve been craving for some time. The top speed charts made for great reading for the Iwata factory.

The bad news? Seemingly, their soft tyre performance. Quartararo branded their pace on new tyres a “disaster” when going for a time attack in Malaysia, so that’s something that needs to be fixed in Portimao. Yamaha, Quartararo and Morbidelli will be hoping Sepang’s P17 and P20 aren’t where they’re sitting come Sunday evening after another two crucial days.

More, from a press release issued by American Flat TracK (AFT):

Daniels Victorious in Dramatic DAYTONA Short Track I

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 9, 2023) – Dallas Daniels (No. 32 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT) secured a nail-biting victory at the DAYTONA Short Track I presented by Daytona Dodge to open the 2023 Progressive American Flat Track season in dramatic fashion.

A hectic opening several laps around the Flat Track at Daytona International Speedway featured the four riders on four different makes who lined the front row for the Mission SuperTwins presented by S&S Cycle Main Event. Johnny Lewis (No. 10 Moto Anatomy X Powered by Royal Enfield 650) raised more than a few eyebrows when he grabbed the early lead aboard the Royal Enfield while established Mission SuperTwins superstars Daniels, Brandon Robinson (No. 44 Mission Roof Systems Indian FTR750), and Briar Bauman (No. 3 Parts Plus/Jacob Companies KTM 890 Duke) jockeyed for position just behind.

After some back-and-forth, Robinson managed to work his way into the lead and then threatened to make an early escape. By the time Daniels and Bauman dispatched Lewis, the Mission Roof Systems rider had nearly a second in hand.

Daniels put his head down at that point, stretching out an advantage over Bauman while eating away at Robinson’s. By half distance the two linked up at the front just as they made their way into lapped traffic for the first time.

The Estenson Racing pilot began to actively search for a way into the lead with just over two minutes on the clock, nudging the front wheel of his Yamaha MT-07 DT up the inside of Robinson’s Indian FTR750 a few times before finally finding the gap he had been looking for.

Once through, Daniels, Robinson, and Bauman appeared safe to open their 2023 campaigns a respective 1-2-3 as time expired. However, the Main Event delivered a final twist in the form of a waving red flag that came after Lewis’ crashed from fifth following a clash with another rider.

Not only was Lewis’ hard-earned top five gone, but so seemingly was Bauman’s remarkable podium run in his debut aboard the all-new Rick Ware Racing KTM 890 Duke, his brake pedal disconnected during the Main Event melee.

However, even with Bauman’s technical issues and the potential for chaos the top three were forced to negotiate, the trio locked down their positions as they powered away from the staggered start and held on to the checkered flag.

The victorious Daniels said, “I tell you what – there’s nothing that makes you more nervous than that right there, leading the laps going away and a red flag comes out with two to go. My dad was talking to me (before the restart), saying “You’re good, you’re good.” And then he stopped talking, and I was like, “No, no, no, keep talking, I’m getting nervous!

“These two guys on the podium with me – I grew up watching these guys win here. These guys are my heroes. And now I want to beat them. It’s an honor to win here.”

Even if the podium went unaltered in the wake of the late stoppage, there was plenty of reshuffling as a result of the restart. Defending Mission SuperTwins king Jared Mees (No. 1 Indian Motorcycle/Rogers Racing/SDI Racing FTR750) was the biggest beneficiary, slashing up to a fourth-place finish after previously being mired as deep as 12th in the pack.

He was followed home by Daniels’ teammate, JD Beach (No. 95 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT), who took fifth despite not faring much better than Mees to that point.

Four-time DAYTONA ST winner Sammy Halbert (No. 69 Martin Trucking/Castrol Yamaha MT-07) took sixth, followed by Dan Bromley (No. 62 Memphis Shades/Corbin/Vinson Construction Yamaha MT-07) and the remounted Lewis.

Davis Fisher (No. 67 Rackley Racing/Bob Lanphere’s BMC Racing Indian FTR750) – who had been fourth at the time of the red flag – ended up ninth, while Ben Lowe (No. 25 Rackley Racing/Mission Foods Indian FTR750) completed the top ten.

Parts Unlimited AFT Singles presented by KICKER

Reigning Parts Unlimited AFT Singles presented by KICKER champion Kody Kopp (No. 1 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing 450 SX-F) got his title defense off to what was effectively a perfect start.

The fact that Kopp entered the season as the primary target of every other rider in the field seemingly did nothing but enhance the dominant streak he flashed so often a year ago. Despite contending with a slick track that demanded focus and invited mistakes, the factory KTM ace topped practice and qualifying, won his Heat and the Al Lamb’s Dallas Honda Challenge, and then ultimately reigned supreme in the season’s opening Main Event.

Kopp blasted off to the holeshot and basically put it out of reach a few short corners later. He systematically worked his lead up to around four seconds before cruising his way to an eventual 3.370-second margin of victory.

Afterward, Kopp claimed the day didn’t come quite as easily as it appeared outwardly. He said, “The #1 plate definitely is a little heavy I think. There were some nerves and some Outlaw races this offseason where I was doubting myself if we were still good on a Short Track. But this is some way to start a season for sure. We pretty much had a clean sweep of the day.”

Dalton Gauthier (No. 79 D&D Racing/Certified KTM 450 SX-F) held down second throughout, perfectly positioned to take advantage of a mistake that never came. Still, his runner-up effort sent a strong message that he’s still very much a threat despite returning to an independent effort in ‘23.

Trevor Brunner (No. 21 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F) rounded out the podium, coming out on top of a race-long fight after making an early strike on Trent Lowe (No. 48 American Honda/Mission Foods CRF450R), the rider signed to fill Gauthier’s former seat at Turner Honda.

Aussie sensation Tom Drane (No. 59 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F) made it two Estenson Yamahas in the top five with a nice start to his full-time Progressive AFT in fifth.

Kopp’s teammate and expected title challenger Max Whale (No. 18 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing 450 SX-F) didn’t enjoy nearly as smooth an evening as his stablemate. Whale crashed in his Heat and the LCQ, but still just managed to advance into the Main, where he battled his way up to eighth in the end.

MotoAmerica: Yaakov Out Of Daytona Due To Leg Injuries (Updated)

Rising star Kayla Yaakov will miss the MotoAmerica REV’IT! Twins Cup season-opener this weekend at Daytona International Speedway due to leg injuries she suffered earlier this week.

“It happened Tuesday [March 7] during testing,” at Roebling Road Raceway, in Georgia, Yaakov told Roadracingworld.com. “It was in Turn Four. I just tucked the front and lowsided. But then when I got into the sand, the bike hit, caught air, and landed on my legs.”

Yaakov said she tried to walk it off, but the level of pain and the upcoming race at Daytona caused her to go straight to the hospital.

The 15-year-old from Pennsylvania didn’t want to get into the specifics of the injuries to her right knee and lower leg, but they were enough that on Thursday morning the MP13 Racing Yamaha team enlisted Stefano Mesa to ride in place of Yaakov at Daytona.

“This morning about an hour before free practice started we made the decision to sit out,” said Yaakov. “It wasn’t really the pain or the swelling that did it. It was more the risk of possibly having a get-off today and hurting some stuff in my leg really badly. The risk of that was just too much. We’re expecting to be back on track at Road Atlanta. Hopefully, before then, but by Road Atlanta I should be good to go.

“Of course, I’m super bummed. It hurts more to watch the [sessions] without me in them than the actual pain in my leg. As much as I’m bummed, I stoked to see Melissa [Paris, Team Owner] and the team doing as well as they’re doing considering Stefano [Mesa] just got on the bike. That just shows how great this team is and how strong the bike is. So, I have a lot of confidence going into Road Atlanta and I’m going to do everything I can to be ready for it.”

Mesa was P2 in provisional Twins Cup qualifying Thursday, just 0.056 second behind defending Champion Blake Davis.

Daytona, FL – March 9, 2023 – As a result of a right-leg injury suffered by MP13 Racing’s Kayla Yaakov earlier this week during a team test at Roebling Road Raceway in Bloomingdale, Georgia, the 15-year-old rider has been ruled out of racing in round one of the 2023 REV’IT! Twins Cup Championship, which is taking place today through Saturday at Daytona International Speedway. The announcement was made by Melissa Paris, team owner of MP13 Racing.

Journeyman rider Stefano Mesa is substituting for Yaakov on the MP13 Racing Yamaha YZF-R7, and his competition number for the REV’IT! Twins Class is 137, which was changed from Yaakov’s number 131.

“Obviously, it’s very disappointing to be in this situation because I’ve seen the work that Kayla has put in, and that my team has put in, during the offseason,” Paris said. “We came to Daytona ready to fight at the front of the race, so it’s definitely a letdown. But, at the end of the day, she’s 15 years old. She has a long career ahead of her, and it’s a long season ahead of us. So, I have to think about the long term, and I just want her to know that we all have her back, and we’re anxious for her to get back on the bike in Road Atlanta.”

Yaakov commented, “I’m sad to have gotten injured just a couple of days before my debut with MP13 Racing and in Twins Cup. But we’ve got some time before round two at Road Atlanta, so I will be working on rehabbing with the plan to get back on the bike as soon as possible and make the grid in Atlanta.”

Mesa rode the MP13 Racing Yamaha R7 in Thursday morning REV’IT! Twins Cup Practice 1 and the afternoon’s provisional qualifying session at Daytona, and despite no laps on the bike prior to today, he provisionally qualified on the front row and in the second grid position.

“Last night, Melissa and Josh came over and asked me if there was a possibility that I could ride their Twins Cup bike because, unfortunately, Kayla had an accident while testing,” Mesa said. “So, I definitely said, ‘Yeah, I would. Just keep me posted.’ This morning, they came looking for me, and here I am riding the bike.”

Mesa is doing double duty at Daytona since he is already riding the Energica Eva Ribelle RS electric bike for Tytlers Cycle Racing in the Mission Super Hooligan National Championship.

Final qualifying for REV’IT! Twins Cup will take place Friday morning at 9 a.m. ET, and race one will go green at 2:30 p.m. ET. Race two is on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET. Both races can be seen live on MotoAmerica’s YouTube channel.

Ducati’s Josh Herrin Fastest On Thursday With Pole To Be Decided In Time Attack

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (March 9, 2023) – The first day of qualifying for Saturday’s Daytona 200, sponsored in part by Pirelli and Bridgestone, got rolling on a sunny Thursday at Daytona International Speedway with Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati NYC’s Josh Herrin earning provisional pole position, with pole to be decided in tomorrow’s Supersport Time Attack

Herrin’s best was a 1:49.043, which was a second faster than the 1:50.088 that earned him pole position a year ago. While last year only one rider broke into the 1:49s during qualifying, so far there are six riders in the 49s.

Second best to Herrin is Disrupt Racing’s Hayden Gillim, the Kentuckian .409 of a second adrift of Herrin and just .007 of a second ahead of Vision Wheel M4 ECSTAR Suzuki’s Richie Escalante.

Two-time and defending Daytona 200 Champion Brandon Paasch was fourth with his 1:49.477 on the TOBC Racing Triumph and Squid Hunter Racing’s Josh Hayes rounded out the top five. Celtic/Tytlers Cycle/TSE Racing’s PJ Jacobsen, who led the morning session, ended the day sixth and was the final rider to crack into the 1:49s with his 1:49.805.

“The morning session I was a little stressed out because we had an issue with some of the quick-change stuff on the front-end, so we lost about half the session removing something in the front,” Herrin said. “In the beginning of the second session I just wanted to work on riding by myself, but when I came in, I was a bit down because the rest of the pack was about .7 seconds quicker than me. But I knew I did the lap by myself but still, when you see the time on the screens, you just get fired up because you want to be in the front. After that I got a draft off Xavi (his teammate Xavi Fores). I used him for the draft at the beginning of the lap so he could get a tow on the flyer. It helped me get that time. I’m really happy, the bike’s feeling really good and I’m looking forward to the opportunity of getting another win.”

Daytona 200 Q1 Results

Daytona Beach, FL – Bridgestone Canadian Superbike stars Ben Young and Elliot Vieira continued their strong start to the Daytona 200 on Thursday, completing competitive Q1 sessions for the Bridgestone BPM Yamaha team at Daytona International Speedway.

The Q1 session offers the first chance at determining grid position for Saturday’s race but not the final opportunity, as the times will be combined with those from Q2 on Friday morning and then adjusted for the final top-12 “Time Attack” shootout.

Young previously managed to go 19th fastest out of 52 entries in the morning practice while Vieira placed himself 30th overall, a respectable start compared to their more experienced American counterparts at Daytona. Vieira and Group B went out first in those sessions with Young and Group A afterwards, but they traded places in qualifying with Young out first.

The reigning Bridgestone CSBK champion continued his familiar pace in 18th for most of the session, but managed to put in a late charge at the perfect time as he jumped to 16th just moments prior to a red-flag stoppage with a time of 1:51.346 – less than two seconds off two-time defending Daytona winner Brandon Paasch and only a hair behind top MotoAmerica Superbike star Cameron Petersen.

It was ultimately Josh Herrin who blitzed the group with a time of 1:49.043 to place himself on provisional pole, with Young only 2.3 seconds behind. Crucially, the late heroics also placed Young just 0.7 seconds off Max Angles in 12th, with the top-12 from the first two qualifying sessions advancing to the “Time Attack” superpole shootout.

“The pace is good. Honestly, we probably could have been top-five if this was last year,” Young said from the BPM Yamaha garage. “At one point I was running with Danny Eslick who’s won this thing four times, so I don’t think we’re far off where we really want to be. We still have a few problems to sort out on the bike, but we’re mostly happy.”

For reference, Young’s time would have placed him sixth through Thursday a year ago, and just 0.033 seconds off eventual winner Paasch in fifth.

As for Vieira, the former Guyanese champion found himself near the front of Group B for majority of his session, despite battling through serious brake issues. He managed to find a near full-second improvement in the end with a new best lap of 1:57.190, good for fourth in the session and 29th overall out of 52 riders, but is confident his pace could be much faster if the team can resolve the braking problems in Q2 on Friday.

“The front brakes are just giving us a lot of trouble. It got worse in qualifying, so we need to eliminate variables,” Vieira said. “Fixing this – we could be talking seconds. The pace is there.”

Running well inside the 110% cut-off from Herrin at the front, Vieira will aim to get the bike closer to full strength on Friday before the 57-lap final on Saturday afternoon.

Behind the provisional target in Herrin, it was Hayden Gillim who went second-fastest through the Q1 sessions and 0.409 seconds off the time to beat, with Richie Escalante completing the top-three from day one at Daytona ahead of Paasch, Josh Hayes, and PJ Jacobsen. Group B was topped by Alex Arango, who slots in 22nd overall.

The other former CSBK competitors in action at Daytona included Darren James in 27th, Vincent Levillain in 30th, and Alex Coelho in 32nd as all three appear set to make the 110% mark for Saturday’s race.

The Bridgestone BPM Yamaha team will now await a hectic Friday morning, as Young returns to the track for Q2 at 10:10 am ET with Vieira immediately after at 10:50 am ET.

Full coverage of the Bridgestone CSBK duo’s efforts will continue on the official CSBK website, while live video can be found on the MotoAmerica website with Live+.

Josh Herrin top of The Pile As The 2023 Daytona 200 Kicks Off

Herrin leads after Thursday’s track action with Xavi Fores an impressive ninth on his Daytona debut

Sunnyvale, Calif., March 9, 2022 — Current MotoAmerica Supersport Champion Josh Herrin (Warhorse HSBK Ducati NYC) bought the heat on the opening day of track action for the 2023 Daytona 200 at the Daytona International Speedway.

The Georgian native played it cool in the opening session, only completing six laps as the Warhorse HSBK Ducati NYC team sorted a few issues with the front-end of his Ducati Panigale V2, but come first qualifying, Herrin used all his experience on the high banks to rocket his way to a 1:49.043s lap, time, some 0.409s clear of Suzuki’s Hayden Gillim and Richie Escalante.

Herrin completed 15 laps for the day as he used his competitors as yardsticks in the drafting challenges that are intrinsic to a fast lap of the iconic 3.5-mile venue.

It was also a successful day for the 2023 MotoAmerica Supersport debutant, Xavi Forés. The man with the most international racing experience in the 2023 Daytona 200 field shaved an impressive 3.5 seconds off his lap time between sessions one and two to finish the day in ninth overall, the Spaniard completing 18 laps for the day.

Herrin’s time means he’s the man they’re all chasing as he goes for back-to-back Daytona 200 pole positions when Qualifying 2 starts at 10:10 am EST tomorrow, March 10, with the all-important Time Attack that will determine the grid positions scheduled for 1:15 pm EST.

2023 Daytona 200 Qualifying 1 Top 5

P1 – Josh Herrin (Ducati) 1:49.043

P2 – Hayden Gillim (Suzuki) 1:49.452

P3 – Richie Escalante (Suzuki) 1:49.459

P4 – Brandon Paasch (Triumph) 1:49.477

P5 – Joshua Hayes (Yamaha) 1:49.737

P9 – Xavi Forés (Ducati) 1:50.283

Xavi Forés (Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati New York – Ducati #12):

“This morning, I said, maybe I go back home,” Fores said with a laugh. “This morning was crazy, we don’t have this kind of banking in Europe and it was the first time for me to experience that. In the second session, I dropped three seconds from my best lap time in the morning, so I was quite happy to finish in ninth place and be in the top 10 on the first day. For sure, we need to improve my feeling with the bike. I am not used to riding on the MotoAmerica Dunlops and don’t have the same feeling as I did with the Pirelli’s. I ride a lot with the edge of the tire and the Dunlop tire doesn’t like that, so I need to improve picking up the bike early in the corner to get on the throttle, but once I gain experience with this style I hope to be at the front.”

Josh Herrin (Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati New York – Ducati #1):

“I’m super happy with today,” Herrin said. “We lost a bit of time in the opening session but in the second session I got a draft from Xavi. I let him go ahead because I wanted to let him follow me a little bit to help, so I used him for the draft at the beginning of the lap so he could get a tow on his flyer, but it helped me to get that time. And then at the very end, I also used Josh Hayes as a draft to try one more lap—I don’t know if my faster one was the first or the second one but the bike’s feeling really good, I’m really happy and looking forward to the rest of the weekend.

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (March 9, 2023) – Harley-Davidson drew first blood on day one of Mission King Of The Baggers action at Daytona International Speedway with a lockout of the provisional front row. At the top of the Harley heap was 2021 class champion Kyle Wyman on the H-D Screamin’ Eagle Road Glide with the New Yorker lapping at 1:52.956 – a whopping 2.2 seconds faster than brother Travis’ pole time from last year’s race.

While it was Kyle Wyman’s factory Harley at the top, it was Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson’s Hayden Gillim putting his Vance & Hines/Mission/Harley-Davidson Road Glide into second, just .042 of a second behind the factory bike. Gillim’s teammate James Rispoli, meanwhile, put his V&H Harley third on the provisional front row.

The first of the Indians was the Indian Motorcycle/Progressive/Mission Foods Indian Challenger ridden by defending Mission King Of The Baggers Champion Tyler O’Hara. O’Hara’s best was a 1:53.615 – .659 of a second off Kyle Wyman’s best. O’Hara’s teammate Jeremy McWilliams was fifth with his 1:53.907.

REV’IT! Twins Cup

Defending REV’IT! Twins Cup Champion Blake Davis earned provisional pole in the class on Thursday, riding his N2 Racing/BobbleHeadMoto Yamaha YZF-R7 to a 1:56.029. That put him just .056 of a second ahead of Stefano Mesa, the Floridian having his first day on Kayla Yaakov’s MP13 Racing Yamaha YZF-R7. Yaakov suffered a leg injury while testing earlier in the week and will miss the two Daytona races while hoping to be fit for round two at Road Atlanta in six weeks.

Filling the provisional front row was Team Iso’s Dominic Doyle – just .076 behind Davis. Rodio Racing – Powered By Robem Racing’s Gus Rodio was fourth fastest with Cycle Tech Racing’s Hayden Schultz rounding out the top five.

Mission Super Hooligan National Championship

Roland Sands Design/Indian Motorcycle’s Bobby Fong didn’t have a good day in Mission King Of The Baggers qualifying as mechanical issues thwarted his sessions, but he made up for it in Mission Super Hooligan National Championship qualifying.

Fong led the way in the final session of the day, lapping at 1:55.430 on his Indian FTR1200. Fong, however, ended the session in front but on foot as he had another issue that left him walking back to the paddock.

Indian Motorcycle/Progressive Mission Foods’ Tyler O’Hara was second with his teammate Jeremy McWilliams third. Team Saddlemen’s Cory West was fourth on his Harley-Davidson Pan America with DiBrino Racing KTM’s Andy DiBrino fifth.

Luca Marini (10). Photo courtesy Dorna.
Luca Marini (10). Photo courtesy Dorna.

Racing, and winning, has long been a core element within the Indian Motorcycle brand DNA. Founded by racers, driven to innovate by a desire to go faster and win races, Indian Motorcycle has been racing, and winning, for 122 years. From Oscar Hedstrom’s endurance racing dominance at the turn of the century, to O.C. Godfrey winning at the famed Isle of Man in 1911, to Burt Munro’s land-speed records, to the original Wrecking Crew’s dominance in the ‘50s and the modern Wrecking Crew’s six consecutive American Flat Track Championships from 2017-2022, to the 2022 Super Hooligan® Championship on the FTR, and the brand’s two King of the Baggers Championships in 2020 and 2022 – the list of history-making racing milestones for Indian Motorcycle is unparalleled.

MP13 Racing’s Yaakov Ruled Out Of Twins Cup At Daytona Due To Injury, Mesa Fills In At Round One

Herrin Snags Provisional Pole For Daytona 200

  1. Josh Herrin (Ducati) 1:49.043
  2. Hayden Gillim (Suzuki) 1:49.452
  3. Richie Escalante (Suzuki) 1:49.459
  4. Brandon Paasch (Triumph) 1:49.477

Young inches closer to top-12 shootout, Vieira nears provisional top-half after Q1 at Daytona 200
