Alstare Suzuki Issues Statement Regarding Manufacturers’ Boycott Of World Superbike

MSMA PRESS RELEASE

The MSMA and each of the individual manufacturers who are members of the MSMA would like to thank the media for all the work they put into covering motorcycle racing and for encouraging so many people to take an interest in, and give their backing to, the sport.

In light of rumors and misinformation regarding who will be competing in World Championship Superbike racing, the MSMA would like to make a clear statement of its position. A set of very fair technical rules had been agreed by all MSMA members in order to prevent unnecessarily high market prices for the machines that the series is based on, but the rules have not been adopted. Consequently, the MSMA members have unanimously determined that unless these rules are adopted and the decision to restrict tires to a single make is rescinded, MSMA members will not compete in 2004 World Championship Superbike racing as factory teams, and furthermore, will not provide technical assistance on a factory basis. Ducati is exempted due to its pre-existing contractual commitments to sponsors.

The MSMA is deeply saddened at having to make this announcement, but has been forced into the decision.

As motorcycle manufacturers, we have to take a resolute stand against technical rules that are likely to be detrimental to the interests of ordinary motorbike customers, and also against the idea of restricting tires to a single make so that a tire maker can become World Champion just by buying the title. We sincerely hope that all devotees of the Championship will appreciate why we have to take this approach. Finally we would like to thank fans, the public and the media for all their support and understanding at this difficult time for motorcycle sports.

We would like to ask you for your understanding and hope that you will continue to be able to give your support to the continuing support to the growth of motor cycling and motorcycle racing. Yours sincerely,

Takanao Tsubouchi
Secretary General
MSMA Tokyo Secretariat

More, from a press release issued by Alstare Suzuki:

Nonparticipation for 2004 WSB Championship races

17th November, 2003
Alleur, Belgium

As one of the members who wish to promote motorcycle racing, Team Alstare Suzuki would like to thank all the media that are always fair and neutral, and so dedicated to promote fun and excitement of motorcycle racing in the world.

On 15th November, MSMA made a statement that all the members other than Ducati will not compete in 2004 World Superbike Championship races as factory teams, and furthermore, will not provide any technical assistance on a factory basis. This is due to the fact the organizer has not adopted a set of fair technical rules that had been agreed by all MSMA members, and also the fact that the organizer have decided to restrict tires to a single make.

In accordance with the MSMA’s decision, Team Alstare Suzuki has decided not to participate in 2004 World Superbike Championship races as Suzuki official Team.

It is our heartfelt regret that we are not able to show our racing performance at the track to all of the SBK race fun. We do hope that the public can understand that we were compelled to make such a sad decision this time.

However, we would like to announce that Team Alstare Suzuki is going to participate in 2004 World Supersport Championship races with the newly-designed GSX-R600. The official details including Riders will be announced at a later date.

Updated Post: After Trying Freestyle Motocross On A GSX-R1000 At Willow, Ulrich Goes Under The Knife

Copyright 2003, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.

Roadracingworld.com’s Chris Ulrich underwent surgery at Dr. Art Ting’s clinic in Fremont, California, today. Dr. Ting used a plate and 11 screws to repair a displaced fracture of Ulrich’s left fibula.

Ulrich broke his leg when he went off-road to avoid crasher Chris Peris and jumped an embankment between turns three and four on the first lap of the WSMC Toyota Cup F1 race at Willow Springs Sunday. While he managed to keep his GSX-R1000 upright, Ulrich’s left foot slipped off the peg and his left leg was caught between the footpeg and the ground when the bike landed.

Ulrich was riding a Roadracing World project GSX-R1000 which had been put together by Ken Hill of Hayward Kawasaki Motorsports and which first rolled on a racetrack on Friday, November 14.

Landers Wins F1 At Willow, Stern Takes WSMC Points Lead

Stoney Landers won the featured Toyota Cup Unlimited Formula 1 race during the November WSMC weekend at Willow Springs International Raceway, and 42-year-old Jeff Stern took the points lead with one round remaining in the WSMC series.

The F1 race had a wild start when Chris Peris dove underneath Chris Ulrich to take third entering turn three on the first lap and immediately highsided, sending riders scattering in all directions to avoid Peris and his CBR600RR. Ulrich jumped the embankment between turns three and four, landing with his left foot under the footpeg of his Roadracingworld.com GSX-R1000, breaking his fibula. Ulrich continued across the track to the outside of turn four where he came to a halt still sitting on the bike.

The race was red flagged while ambulance crews attended to Peris, who was at first thought to have suffered a broken collarbone but actually had a separated shoulder, and Ulrich, who at post time was scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday, to plate the displaced fracture.

When the race was restarted for 10 laps instead of the originally scheduled 12, Landers raced Jack Pfeifer for the lead until Pfeifer crashed out in turn five, bringing the race to an end. Chris Siglin finished second on a GSX-R750 he won in the Team Hammer Talent Search Presented by Alpinestars, with Corey Eaton third on another GSX-R750. Landers and Pfeifer rode GSX-R1000s.

Earlier in the day, Landers had barely beaten Ulrich across the line in Open Superstock, Ulrich coming from 18th on the grid to second on the first lap and taking the lead midway through the race. Landers repassed Ulrich in turn eight on the last lap after both encountered a backmarker in turn five and held him off by about six inches at the finish line. Both rode GSX-R1000 Suzukis, with Landers on Dunlop tires and Ulrich on Pirelli tires.

Before causing the first-lap F1 melee, Peris won the Graves Motorsports 650cc Superbike race from Robbie Dowie and Siglin, the 600cc Modified Production race from Siglin and Dowie, and finished second to Siglin in the HotBodiesRacing.com 600cc Superstock race.

Stern went from 11 points behind Jeremy Toye in overall WSMC points to 28 points ahead by finishing third behind Eaton and Siglin in the L&L Motorsports 750cc Superbike race, winning the Sport Tire Services Formula 40 Heavyweight race, and finishing second behind Landers in Open Superbike. Stern also finished fourth in the Toyota Cup race. Defending WSMC Champion Toye passed up the September WSMC weekend to race the AMA National at Barber Motorsports Park, and missed this weekend to race in Macau.

Stern last won an overall club Championship in 1988, when he was the overall AFM Champion.

Francis Batta
Team Manager

Copyright 2003, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.
