Suzuki’s Version Of The End Of Product Sharing With Kawasaki

New Era of Suzuki/Kawasaki Alliance BREA, Calif. (May 26, 2005) – In August 2000, Suzuki Motor Corporation and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. announced an “Alliance”. This Alliance was formed to help in parts sourcing, platform production of OEM units, and joint development of new products. And some of benefits from this Alliance, such as products line-up expansion, came to us instantly. Today, we are announcing that the Alliance has progressed to a new stage. Since we began selling OEM products from Kawasaki, three years have passed. Over these 3 years, we investigated many factors such as profitability, sales volume, customer reaction, influence on brand images, competitiveness of each OEM product. After much discussion followed by careful investigation, we have decided to discontinue the sale of these OEM products. With the OEM product sales being discontinued, we’re announcing that for the 2006 product, the following models will not be available from Suzuki: RM65, DR-Z110, LT-V700F, M95, and the QUV product. Discontinuing the OEM products business gives us the opportunity to focus on developing Suzuki’s own-design product with Suzuki character and brand image. Suzuki will continue to develop new Suzuki models to replace some of these units in the future. The RM-Z250 will be produced for 2006. As this is a jointly developed unit, Suzuki and Kawasaki may introduce their own versions of this model with features not being commonly used on both of the Suzuki and Kawasaki models. Suzuki Motor Corporation has plans to provide Kawasaki with the OEM product in 2006 as requested by Kawasaki. This will give time for Kawasaki to develop their own models, as well as for Suzuki. We will keep this Alliance as we continue to review our current status. After a decision is determined for the best business practices, further steps will be taken. Rather than the direct OEM products exchange, it may be more advantageous to consider indirect exchange of their resources so that both companies could keep their brand identities with respect for their loyal customers.

Toseland Looking For Strong Showing In Front Of British Fans At Silverstone

DUCATI XEROX TEAM DUO AIM TO CONTINUE MONZA PROGRESS AT SILVERSTONE ROUND Silverstone (UK), Thursday 26 May: Silverstone Circuit in Northants is the venue for round 5 of the World Superbike Championship this weekend, but it won’t be the legendary Formula 1 track that greets Ducati Xerox Team riders James Toseland and Régis Laconi as they attempt to build on their positive Monza form. After last year’s high-speed thriller around the one of the fastest circuits in the world, the reigning world champion and his French team-mate will line up on the grid on Sunday for 28 laps of the shorter 3.561 km (2.213 miles) International Circuit, used in the popular British Superbike championship. The main change is that instead of powering down Hangar Straight towards Stowe, the riders will now veer off at Becketts and head directly for Abbey before completing the rest of the considerably shorter airfield layout. TOSELAND BACK ON TRACK: Toseland put his 2005 season back on track with a gritty ride to third place at Monza, immediately followed by a positive three-day test session at Mugello, and he now aims to produce more of the same in front of his home crowd. “After Monza I’m really looking forward to every round from now on but in particular Silverstone”, said Toseland. “All I can do is apologize to my British fans for my start to the season. For Silverstone and the home crowd I just want to prove exactly why I’ve got the number 1 on the bike. I didn’t buy it, it was earned last year and I want to prove that we can keep it, especially as it’s my first time back for a race in Britain since winning the title. “I was a bit sceptical at first about racing on the short circuit because we haven’t ridden it, but in fact there’s not much there that we don’t know so it should be OK” he added. “I really benefited from the Mugello test after Monza, because we tried a few things and I went 1.2 seconds quicker than last year so now I’m really looking forward to getting out there at Silverstone on Friday”. LACONI UPS THE PACE: Régis Laconi was unlucky not to win race 2 at Monza after leading until half-way round the final lap, but the 29-year-old Frenchman is confident that his Ducati team is on the right track for the rest of the season. “I believe we are coming better and better now. At Valencia I was on the pace but unfortunately I didn’t race, while at Monza I was very close to the win so I feel that the bike is getting more and more competitive as the season goes on”, declared Laconi. “I was surprised to learn that we are racing on the short Silverstone circuit, but for me it doesn’t matter if it is long or short, I will give everything as always to get a good result. It will be important in qualifying to get the bike set up right for the tight chicane, because we go through there more times in this year’s race. Now the circuit is not so fast, so the settings will be different, but it will still be a great track to race on”. WSBK vs FOOTBALL ALL-STARS: On Thursday media day, Ducati Xerox Team’s James Toseland, together with fellow Brit Chris Walker, championship leader Troy Corser, Aussies Chris Vermeulen, Karl Muggeridge and Andrew Pitt, and Ducati SC’s Gianluca Nannelli, will take on a number of ex-Premiership footballers – including former England, Newcastle and Tottenham striker Les Ferdinand, and ex-player turned BBC Radio Five Live broadcaster Mark Bright – in a five-a-side friendly football match. The game will take place on a purpose-built inflatable pitch located inside the circuit. Afterwards the roles will be reversed and Ferdinand and Co. will be taken for a thrilling pillion ride around the world famous Silverstone circuit on the back of the Ducati Xerox 999 twin-seater, piloted by Dario Marchetti. GUILD AWARD FOR TOSELAND: Further recognition for James Toseland’s 2004 World Superbike championship victory will come at his home round when the Guild of Motoring Writers presents the 24-year-old from Sheffield with its ‘Rider of the Year’ award, relating to his title win last year. The original trophy, which spends 364 days a year locked in the Guild’s display cabinet in the RAC at Pall Mall, London and on which James’s name will be etched, is a vintage bike single cylinder head in silver, mounted on a plinth, while James will receive an engraved pewter tankard for his efforts. Previous winners of the award include Valentino Rossi and Carl Fogarty. CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS (after 4 of 12 rounds) : Riders – 1. Corser (Suzuki) 182; 2. Kagayama (Suzuki) 130; 3. Kawasaki And Suzuki To Discontinue Shared Production Models

KAWASAKI-SUZUKI ALLIANCE ENTERS NEW PHASE The “alliance” announced in August 2001 between Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., (KHI) and Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) will now focus on potential exchanges of indirect resources, rather than on direct OEM product exchanges. It was originally formed as a mechanism to allow sharing of parts sourcing, platform production of OEM units, and joint development of new products. Following a successful three-year arrangement, both companies have considered factors related to sales volume, profitability, customer reaction, influence on brand image, and competitiveness of each OEM product. The two brands have jointly agreed that more focused, independent development activity will serve to further enhance their respective brand identities with their loyal customer bases. This modification to the alliance relationship will mean that OEM product sales will be discontinued, and the following models will not be available from Kawasaki, effective with the 2007 model year: KLX125A/B, KSF80A, KSF50A, KDX50A KHI product development has been accelerated during the initial alliance phase, as more resources were able to be placed against brand-specific product needs. The company will continue to develop new models to replace some of the above. Meanwhile, the KSF400A will still be produced for model year 2007. Achieving significant savings in development resources was a primary goal of the relationship with SMC, and having done that, KHI is in a stronger position for investment spending against future product introductions. The market environment is such that expectations for new technologies and their product applications are ongoing, and KHI is intent on continuing to deliver excellence in these areas. The alliance with SMC, and its benefits to our dealers, will be reviewed on a regular basis. Joint activity will be determined based on careful review of the effect it will have on both retail profitability and customer loyalty.

Ducati Plans Earlier Production Of SportClassic Models

Ducati will begin SportClassic production early, to start in September Surprise preview of the Paul Smart 1000 and Sport 1000 at the Motogiro d’Italia. Ducati gave a surprise preview of two of its three new SportClassic motorcycles at the Motogiro d’Italia opening. This unique 70’s-inspired range of Ducati motorcycles reflects the beauty, timeless style and sporting roots of the Borgo Panigale motorcycle manufacturer. Ducati has borrowed the best style features of the past and combined them with the latest technology and engineering. There could be no better backdrop than the Motogiro d’Italia for this first public appearance. The honour of riding the first two examples was reserved, of course, for Federico Minoli, Ducati President and CEO, and Gianluigi Mengoli, President of the Fondazione Ducati. They are key figures in corporate Ducati, but more importantly, they are motorcycle enthusiasts riding in this tough historic and legendary competition. The Paul Smart 1000 Limited Edition pays homage to the legendary Ducati 750 Imola Racer and its rider, Paul Smart, that together won the now famous 1972 Imola 200 mile race. Fans will be pleasantly surprised to discover that production will begin in September, well before the publicized schedule. The appearance at the MotoGiro is also the first time the public will see the production sea green frame and silver bodywork as inspired by the 1974 Ducati 750SS. Alongside the tribute to Paul Smart will be the Sport 1000, which stands out in its bold yellow paint scheme reminding us of the 1973 750 SuperSport. A “café racer,” with aggressive but nevertheless essential lines, the Sport 1000 is destined to become a cult object that combines modern performance with vintage charm. The enthusiasm and focus that the public has shown since the Tokyo 2003 Show debut, have encouraged Ducati to schedule launches earlier than anticipated and to preview two of these three “jewels” ahead of time. The production dates of the bikes have been announced and the Paul Smart 1000 Limited Edition will start in September 2005, with the Sport 1000 hot on its heels in October 2005, six months ahead of schedule. The GT 1000 will also be produced early, beginning in spring 2006. Right after the Motogiro “show circuit,” the two mature SportClassic prototypes will head back to Bologna to complete trials for their official worldwide road launch, as testimonials of Ducati tradition, innovation, style and design. Founded in 1926, Ducati builds racing-inspired motorcycles characterized by unique engine features, innovative design, advanced engineering and overall technical excellence. The Company produces motorcycles in six market segments which vary in their technical and design features and intended customers: Superbike, Supersport, Monster, Sport Touring, Multistrada and the new SportClassic. The Company’s motorcycles are sold in more than 60 countries worldwide, with a primary focus in the Western European, Japan and North American markets. Ducati has won thirteen of the last fifteen World Superbike Championship titles and more individual victories than the competition put together. For more information about the Company, please visit our web site at http://www.ducati.com.
