Oxley Bom MotoGP Podcast: 2025’s Top 10 MotoGP Riders

“If you’ve checked out last week’s episode, you’ll know that it was Jeremy Burgess who first described riders as ‘flickering lightbulbs’. Why? Because the moment they start to fail, you just replace them with a new one.

Cruel, yes, but that’s MotoGP for you. You can be one of the twenty fastest riders alive – but all that matters is that you’re always just a little slower than the next guy. You’ve been demoted to dead wood, to borrow another term from Burgesss. Good luck, and goodbye!

So maybe you’re one of those riders who didn’t appear last episode. Maybe you thought this meant you were safe.

Bad luck, buddy: that means Mat and Peter just haven’t gotten to you yet!”

Incredibly Tight at the Top in Suzuki Series

It is incredibly tight at the top after the second round of three in the 2025 Suzuki International Series in the Manawatu at the weekend.

And now the popular motorcycling competition is headed for a much-anticipated finale on the public streets of Whanganui’s world-renowned Cemetery Circuit in just 12 days’ time, on December 26, with racing sure to go right down to the final chequered flag in several of the bike categories.

The tightest of all is the formula one sidecars class where Tokomaru’s Barry Smith, with Whanganui co-pilot Louise Blythe, and Panmure’s Adam Unsworth, with Whanganui co-pilot Bryce Rose, are level on points after the weekend’s two days of racing at Manfeild, on the outskirts of Feilding.

Two of the leading riders in the formula one/superbike class each suffered crashes in separate incidents at Manfeild, Bay of Plenty’s defending champion and class leader Mitch Rees sliding from his bike while leading the F1 race on Saturday, while his father, multi-time former champion Tony Rees, crashed out of race three on Sunday afternoon and, with an ankle injury, he opted not to line up for the re-start.

Consistency from the fast-improving Rogan Chandler, from Upper Hutt, earned him the No.2 position in the F1 standings and he is now just three points adrift of Whakatane man Mitch Rees. As for 58-year-old ‘elder statesman’ Tony Rees, he has slipped to third in the rankings, although he is only 11 points behind Chandler.

One of the most impressive riders in the series so far has been Silverdale teenager Tyler King.

The 19-year-old holds the lead in two of the competition’s 13 bike categories – he is on top in both the formula three and supersport 300 classes – and his current form and momentum will likely see him remain there.

Whanganui’s Richie Dibben has been untouchable this season, the national supermoto champion taking his lightly-modified Suzuki RM-Z450 motocross bike to qualify fastest at both Taupo’s round one and at round two in Feilding and then winning all six races contested, one of them a from-last-to-first masterclass performance.

Started in 2008, this year’s 17th annual Suzuki International Series – it skipped a year in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic – climaxes as usual with the post-Christmas public street race event on Whanganui’s famous Cemetery Circuit on Boxing Day.

Leaders after the second round of three in the 2025 Suzuki International Series at Manfeild at the weekend are: Whakatane’s Mitch Rees (formula one); Auckland’s Cameron Leslie (formula two/supersport 600); Silverdale’s Tyler King (formula three); Silverdale’s Tyler King (supersport 300); Paraparaumu’s Richard Markham-Barrett (formula sport, senior, over-600cc); Feilding’s Jordan Walters (formula sport, junior, up to 600cc); Auckland’s Paul Pavletich (Pre 89 post classics, senior, over-600cc); Auckland’s Scott Findlay (Pre 89, post classics junior, under-600cc); Upper Hutt’s Kieran Mair (Pre 95, post classics senior, over-600cc); Te Awanga’s Eddie Kattenberg (Pre 95, post classics junior, under-600cc); Tokomaru’s Barry Smith/ Whanganui’s Louise Blythe and Panmure’s Adam Unsworth/Whanganui’s Bryce Rose (F1 sidecars) first equal; Whanganui’s Tracey Bryan & Jo Franzen (F2 sidecars); Whanganui’s Richie Dibben (supermoto).

The Suzuki International Series is supported by Suzuki New Zealand, Mondiale VGL, Auto Super Shoppe Tawa, Givi, I-Tools, Bridgestone tyres, Metzeler tyres, Sharp As Linehaul Ltd Whanganui, TSS Motorcycles, Ipone, Inferno Design & Digital, Kiwibike Motorcycle Insurance Specialists, Shark, Barred Up Scaffolding, The Dentists.

DATES FOR 2025 SUZUKI INTERNATIONAL SERIES

  • Round 1, Taupo, Dec 6-7;
  • Round 2, Manfeild, Feilding, Dec 13-14;
  • Round 3, Whanganui’s Cemetery Circuit, Dec 26.

American Rossi Moor Evaluated At Ferrari Academy Center

Rossi Attila Moor has begun his preparations for the 2026 season at the Ferrari Academy Training Center.

In early December, Révész Racing’s Hungarian-American talent took part in a comprehensive HRV assessment and a performance stress test in Budapest. Based on the results, doctors confirmed what had already been evident from his on-track performances: Rossi is in excellent physical condition, with strong recovery capacity, and possesses a psycho-emotional profile perfectly suited to elite sport.
This week, Dr. Marco Casarotti—psychologist, psychotherapist, trainer, and advisor at the Ferrari Academy Training Center—worked with Rossi in a two-day mental and performance program designed for top athletes.

Dr. Casarotti focuses on peak performance in both professional and sporting environments. He earned his Ph.D. in cognitive science at the University of Padua, conducting innovative research in cognitive processes, spatial attention, and neural modeling. He currently serves as a consultant to the Ferrari Driver Academy, where he develops performance-enhancing training programs. In addition, he works as a corporate trainer specializing in leadership, communication, and organizational change. His expertise extends to biofeedback, neurofeedback, and team coaching, further strengthening his role in integrating neurological principles with practical growth strategies.

Rossi completed every assessment: debriefing, gym training, cognitive evaluation, psychophysiological tests, cortical assessment, balance testing, breathing protocols, cognitive training, and sports psychology coaching. It is a program that challenges even the strongest athletes.
Rossi not only completed the program but impressed everyone involved. At the end of the second day, in recognition of his attitude and performance throughout, Dr. Casarotti surprised him with a special reward: five laps in the Formula 4 simulator on the Imola circuit. Just five laps. And yet his performance was so remarkable that when he stepped out of the simulator, the stunned silence spoke volumes.

His innate talent, instinct, and precision were unmistakable.

For us, the 2026 season has already begun. Every day we are working to ensure Rossi is in the best possible shape for the year ahead. His performance at the Ferrari Academy Training Center once again made it clear: Rossi is a true, rare talent.

And in 2026, we will make sure the world sees it on track.

CTR Showcase Races Will Precede 7 AFT Nationals

Progressive American Flat Track and Cory Texter Race Promotions Join Forces to Pave the Road to Grand National Championship.

Ambitious collaboration ahead of the 2026 Progressive American Flat Track season will pave the road to the Grand National Championship for future stars of the sport.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.  – AMA Pro Racing and Cory Texter Race Promotions are thrilled to detail an ambitious collaboration ahead of the 2026 Progressive American Flat Track season which will pave the road to the Grand National Championship for the future stars of the sport.

As part of this initiative, each of the first seven stops on the ‘26 Progressive AFT calendar will be preceded by an AMA-sanctioned Mission Foods CTR Showcase Event to be held at the same venue on the day before the subsequent American Flat Track National.

And it goes much deeper than merely introducing aspiring young amateur racers to the Progressive AFT paddock and providing them with an opportunity to showcase their skills in front of the key stakeholders of the sport.

Each Mission Foods CTR Showcase Event will feature the 450 Road to AFT class, which will utilize the same technical rules as the all-new AFT 450 ProSport class. The top 12 finishers in the Road to AFT Main Events will automatically qualify for an AFT 450 ProSport license and will be granted entry for the following day’s National event. Additionally, points from the Road to AFT class can be applied toward earning an AMA Pro Expert license for the 2027 season.

This direct pipeline connects the amateur and pro ranks of motorcycle dirt track racing like never before, helping ensure that the most promising talents are identified and provided with the maximum opportunity to both build their individual careers and strengthen the sport as a whole.

By its very design, AFT 450 ProSport plays a critical role in that masterplan. This stepping-stone class is built around stock 450cc single-cylinder motorcycles featuring minimal modifications. As such, AFT 450 ProSport reduces financial barriers while creating a level playing field that showcases rider talent more so than equipment to encourage broad participation from grassroots racers.

With lowered operating and bike preparation costs, amateurs, privateers, small teams, and regional aces alike will be provided a shared arena in which they can demonstrate their ability before a national audience.

Cory Texter, two-time AFT Production Twins Champion and founder of Cory Texter Race Promotions, said, “I’m extremely excited about our plans for next year. It’s been a long time coming, and we’ve been working tirelessly to make this happen. It’s a great opportunity for amateur riders to compete at the same venues as the professional series, racing in front of professional teams and partners. We will be at different venues all around the country, which was important so that we could provide this opportunity to riders from as wide a geographic area as possible. For as long as I can remember, my passion has been growing the sport, and I am excited to take this important step toward that goal.”

In addition to the 450 Road to AFT class, the AMA-sanctioned Mission Foods CTR Showcase events will feature amateur classes for all ages and motorcycle sizes, providing riders the opportunity to compete at professional-level facilities in front of the Progressive American Flat Track fans attending the weekend’s races.

Mission Foods CTR Showcase Event Schedule

More Thrills Expected at Suzuki International Series Round 2

DECEMBER 11, 2025: The 2025 Suzuki International Series will return to the sport’s global founding roots when the elite of the motorcycle racing community arrive in Feilding this weekend.

The popular three-round competition heads to the “home of superbike racing in New Zealand and worldwide”, the hallowed grounds of Manfeild, for round two of the series this coming Saturday and Sunday.

And, if it is at all possible after last weekend’s spectacular opening round at Taupo, this weekend could rival even that in terms of bike racing thrills and excitement.

The racing was fast and frenetic in all the various bike categories in Taupo last weekend, but the various class leaders know they’ll have a target on their back at Manfeild, the same venue on the outskirts of Feilding that hosted the inaugural World Superbike Championships (WSBK) series finale in 1988 and also hosted the WSBK final round again in 1989, 1990 and 1992.

The defending Suzuki International Series champion in the premier 1000cc formula one/superbike class, Whakatane’s Mitch Rees, dominated his class again with three wins from three starts in Taupo last weekend, but he won’t be able to rest on his laurels with men such as Upper Hutt’s Rogan Chandler, Porirua’s Rhys Lindsay, Auckland’s Dave Sharp and, of course, Rees’ own multi-time former New Zealand championship-winning father, Tony Rees, among others, sure to challenge him at Manfeild.

Whanganui’s Richie Dibben is also certain to delight the crowd with his undeniable skills and speed on the lightly-modified Suzuki RM-Z450 motocross bike he races in the supermoto class.

Dibben is surely a crowd favourite to dominate again, especially after his spectacular performance in the second of three supermoto races at Taupo less than a week ago.

Dibben was late getting to the starting grid for race two and was obliged to start this battle from pit lane, meaning he was forced to enter the track after the last rider in had disappeared around the first corner.

From 19th and last, Dibben quickly went to work.

After just two of the prescribed 10 laps in this race, Dibben (Suzuki RM-Z450) was already up to 13th position and closing fast on the leaders, with Waverley’s Luke Martin in front at that stage.

After four laps, Dibben was up to fifth and, by halfway through lap five, the Whanganui man was in the lead. Dibben went on to win the race by more than 13 seconds from Waverley’s Mark Oliver, with Martin settling for third.

“It was good to get the three wins. I had a good day on the bike and racer two would have made it exciting for the spectators,” said Dibben afterwards, in classic understatement.

“I knew I just had to go hard, charge through the pack, don’t hold back, go fast and pass everybody,” said the 36-year-old father-of-three.

“I’m looking forward to Manfeild this weekend and the Cemetery Curcuit (in Whanganui) on Boxing Day. Racing in front of a home crowd is always a bonus, so I particularly enjoy the Boxing Day races.”

Meanwhile, Auckland’s Cameron Leslie, Bulls rider Ashton Hughes and Christchurch’s current national supersport 600cc champion Jake Lewis, among others, are all locked in a fierce battle for formula two/supersport 600 honours.

Silverdale’s Tyler King hogged the podium in two categories – the formula three and supersport 300 classes – so he will be looking to maintain his momentum at Manfeild.

Started in 2008, this year’s 17th annual Suzuki International Series – it skipped a year in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic – climaxes as usual with the world-renowned Cemetery Circuit public street race event in Whanganui on Boxing Day (December 26).

It is interesting to note that several of those riders who graced Manfeild at those WSBK rounds between 1988 and 1992 are likely to be racing or at least managing or acting as mechanic for other riders at Manfeild this weekend too, albeit now with a few grey hairs and a few more wrinkles, but they still have a huge passion for the sport and will be showing little signs of slowing down.

So, watch out for men such as Te Awanga’s Eddie Kattenberg, Whanganui’s Brian Bernard, Taumarunui’s Russell Josiah and, of course, 57-year-old Hall of Fame legend Tony Rees.

CLASS LEADERS:

Class leaders after the first round of three in the 2025 Suzuki International Series in Taupo at the weekend are: Whakatane’s Mitch Rees (formula one); Auckland’s Cameron Leslie (formula two/supersport 600); Silverdale’s Tyler King (formula three); Silverdale’s Tyler King (supersport 300); Wellington’s Malcolm Bielski (formula sport, senior, over-600cc); Whanganui’s Jeff Croot (formula sport, junior, up to 600cc); Auckland’s Paul Pavletich (Pre 89 post classics, senior, over-600cc); Auckland’s Scott Findlay (Pre 89, post classics junior, under-600cc); Te Awanga’s Eddie Kattenberg (Pre 95, post classics junior, under-600cc); Upper Hutt’s Kieran Mair (Pre 95, post classics senior, over-600cc); Auckland’s Adam Unsworth & Bryce Rose (F1 sidecars); Whanganui’s Tracey Bryan & Jo Franzen (F2 sidecars); Whanganui’s Richie Dibben (supermoto).

The Suzuki International Series is supported by Suzuki New Zealand, Mondiale VGL, Auto Super Shoppe Tawa, Givi, I-Tools, Bridgestone tyres, Metzeler tyres, Sharp As Linehaul Ltd Whanganui, TSS Motorcycles, Ipone, Inferno Design & Digital, Kiwibike Motorcycle Insurance Specialists, Shark, Barred Up Scaffolding, The Dentists.

DATES FOR 2025 SUZUKI INTERNATIONAL SERIES

  • Round 1, Taupo, Dec 6-7;
  • Round 2, Manfeild, Feilding, Dec 13-14;
  • Round 3, Whanganui’s Cemetery Circuit, Dec 26.

More Thrills Expected at Suzuki International Series Round 2

Whanganui’s Richie Dibben (Suzuki RM-Z450, No.1) sure to delight the crowd again at Manfeild this weekend. He is pictured here looking across as he puts a pass on Wellington’s Will Young. Photo by Andy McGechan / courtesy BikesportNZ.com
