MIXED FORTUNES: Bulega unbeatable in Race 1 at Assen, Razgatlioglu misses podium places. Andrea Locatelli and Danilo Petrucci distinguish themselves as they overcome ‘El Turco’ in duels to secure podium spots

The MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship’s first race at Assen is in the books, and the ‘Cathedral of Speed’ hosted another thriller as Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) topped the podium, followed by Andrea Locatelli (Pata Maxus Yamaha) in his return to the podium after featuring at Portimao and Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team) in P3. Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) saw his hopes to continue his podium streak dashed after missing the rostrum spots in P4.

BULEGA DOMINANT, LOCATELLI PROGRESSING: Second podium for ‘Loka’

Bulega (claimed the holeshot into the first corner ahead of Locatelli, with ‘Loka’ bundling his way through at Turn 5 before Bulega responded immediately. That allowed Bulega to cruise his way to victory while the chasing pack scrapped it out over the remaining podium places. Meanwhile, behind Locatelli, sharks in the form of Sam Lowes (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team), Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) and Razgatlioglu began to circle; until out of nowhere, in Lap 7 when Bautista and Lowes collided at Turn 9, wiping them both out of the race from the podium fight. ‘El Turco’ briefly overtook Locatelli, however the much-improved Yamaha rider battled back to lock in P2 after following the reigning Champion for a few laps. Petrucci surged late to pass Toprak to bump ‘El Turco’ off the podium for his first podium since Australia’s Tissot Superpole Race.

RAZGATLIOGLU MISSES PODIUM: Second time this season after Race 2 in Australia

Razgatlioglu had a sluggish start to the race, falling to P8 in Lap 1, however by Lap 3 he was already back up into the podium fight. Strong performances from Locatelli and Petrucci saw them overtake Toprak’s BMW M 1000 RR to shut the rostrum’s doors to the Turkish star. Iker Lecuona (Honda HRC) and Xavi Vierge (Honda HRC) both had strong results earning the best combined result of the season for the Honda factory riders, with Vierge only two tenths of a second behind his teammate.

AEGERTER BEST RESULT OF THE SEASON: P7 at Assen Race 1

Dominique Aegerter (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) earned the best result of his season so far in P7. Michael van der Mark (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) charged up the grid from P13 to the top six, however late surges from Lecuona, Vierge, and Aegerter bumped him back to P9 for the Dutchman at his home round. Scott Redding (MGM BONOVO Racing) sealed off the top 10 after starting the race back in P16.

ALEX LOWES RECOVERS FROM CRASH TO SCORE: P11 for the British Bimota rider

Alex Lowes (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team) crashed on Turn 5 of Lap 7; however he was able to rejoin the race and finished in a P11, salvaged what could have been a pity of a result for Bimota. Tarran Mackenzie (PETRONAS MIE Honda Racing Team) similarly recovered well after having to serve two Long Lap Penalties for a jump start to the race, finishing in P12. Garrett Gerloff (Kawasaki WorldSBK Team) finished in P13 in Race 1. Just over 2 tenths of a second behind him, Tito Rabat (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team) finished in P14, his second time scoring points this season. Ryan Vickers (Motocorsa Racing) was the only rookie to finish in the points on the day, finishing in P15. Jason O’Halloran (Pata Maxus Yamaha) and Zaqhwan Zaidi (PETRONAS MIE Honda Racing Team finished P16 and P17 to close out the timesheet.

BASSANI CRASHES OUT IN LAST LAP: Turn 8 spoils Bassani’s otherwise positive day

Yari Montella (Barni Spark Racing Team) only scored 9 points in his last time out at Assen in WorldSSP, this time unfortunately continued his run of poor luck in Holland, crashing out of the race in Lap 2’s Turn 1. Bahattin Sofuoglu (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team) had an unfortunate crash at Turn 1 of Lap 6, followed shortly after by Andrea Iannone (Team Pata Go Eleven) who crashed in Lap 7’s Turn 4. On the race’s last lap, Axel Bassani (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team) saw his otherwise strong race spoiled by a crash while rounding Turn 8.

SUPERPOLE SHOCK: Sam Lowes stuns to claim maiden WorldSBK pole at Assen ahead of Bulega and Razgatlioglu. The Brit was a surprise package in the 15-minute Superpole session as he claimed his first World Superbike pole position

Sam Lowes (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team) is now a MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship polesitter after pulling off a shock P1 in Tissot Superpole at the TT Circuit Assen. He was more than a tenth clear of Championship leader Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) with Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) in third for the Pirelli Dutch Round, with the #14 leading away the grid from P1.

THE FIRST RUN: Bulega quickest as lap record is broken

Bulega wasted no time in smashing the lap record as he set a 1’32.760s to claim a provisional pole on his first lap, beating the previous record by two tenths to lead Andrea Locatelli (Pata Maxus Yamaha) and Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) in the top three, with 12 riders separated by less than a second; with almost four tenths of that coming between first and second. Most riders only managed one hot lap on their first stint.

A MAIDEN POLE: Sam Lowes secures maiden pole in stunning fashion

Bulega was the first rider to head out for his second stint with more than six minutes remaining, with Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) following around a minute later, but he caught Razgatlioglu and Axel Bassani (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team) who were on out laps and had to back out, showing frustration as he did. Razgatlioglu and Bassani were each applied a three-position penalty by the FIM WorldSBK Stewards for slow riding and will start Race 1 from P6 and P7 respectively.

It was Sam Lowes who stunned with a 1’32.596s to claim a maiden pole position – at the same venue twin brother Alex Lowes (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team) did in 2018, demoting Bulega to P2 with Razgatlioglu claiming third place to go from the front row. The #14 becomes the 15th polesitter from Great Britain in WorldSBK and the 72nd in the Championship’s history.

BEST SINCE 2023: Bassani P4 ahead of Bautista and Locatelli

Axel Bassani (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team) continued to show his prowess at Assen as he claimed fourth place on the time sheet, the first time he’s qualified as high as P4 since Most in 2023 when he was on Ducati machinery. Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) will go from P5 ahead of Andrea Locatelli (Pata Maxus Yamaha) in sixth, with ‘Loka’ just over three tenths away from pole position and continuing to lead Yamaha’s charge.

THIRD ROW START: Petrucci ahead of Gardner and Alex Lowes, Iannone crashes after the flag

Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team) will go from seventh ahead of Remy Gardner (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) in eighth, while Alex Lowes will go from the back of the third row from P9. Andrea Iannone (Team Pata GoEleven) will line up from tenth, but he had a dramatic end to the session with a crash at Turn 8 after the session ended with his Panigale V4 R looking very second hand after the crash. Home hero Michael van der Mark (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) will line up from 13th, with Iker Lecuona (Honda HRC) in 14th.

Franco Morbidelli led MotoGP World Championship practice Friday afternoon at Lusail International Circuit, in Doha, Qatar. Riding his Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team Ducati Desmosedici GP24 on spec Michelin tires, Morbidelli turned a lap time of 1:50.830 around the 3.34-mile (5.38 km) track and led the 22-rider field.

Francesco Bagnaia was the best of the rest with a 1:50.975 on his Lenovo Team Ducati Desmosedici GP25, and his teammate Marc Marquez was third at 1:50.997.

Morbidelli’s teammate, Fabio Di Giannantonio finished the session fourth with a 1:51.129 on his Ducati Desmosedici GP25.

Alex Marquez crossed the finish line fifth with a lap time of 1:51.236 on his BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP Desmosedici, making it five Ducatis in the top five.

Monster Energy Yamaha YZR-M1 MotoGP Team’s, Fabio Quartararo broke the Ducati stranglehold at the top with a 1:51.293.

2024 MotoGP Champion, Jorge Martin was 20th on his Aprilia Racing RS-GP25.

More, from a press release issued by Dorna:

Morbidelli pinches Friday P1 from Bagnaia, Martin 1.5s adrift. The Italian leaves it late to grab Day 1 honours in Doha as the World Champion completes a trouble-free outing.

Friday belongs to a very fast Franco Morbidelli (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) after a late lap sees the Italian oust compatriot Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) under the night lights at the Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar. Marc Marquez ensured two Ducati Lenovo Team machines were in the top three, as World Champion Jorge Martin (Aprilia Racing) makes his much-anticipated return to MotoGP action – and thankfully, it was a trouble-free day for the #1.

THE FIGHT FOR Q2 ON FRIDAY

As time attack crunch time neared, Alex Marquez led the way with a 1:51.704 with the top three, including Bagnaia and Marc Marquez, split by 0.092s. Maverick Viñales (Red Bull KTM Tech3) was enjoying himself in the first 40 minutes, the Spaniard was fourth quickest ahead of the two Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team riders – Morbidelli and Fabio Di Giannantonio.

With 15 minutes to go, the first fresh soft Michelin rubber lap times were starting to come in. Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) and Jack Miller (Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP) stuck their YZR-M1s into the top 10 before the goalposts were moved significantly – first by Morbidelli, then by Bagnaia. The latter’s first attack was a 1:50.975, 0.2s clear of his fellow Italian, as Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) leapt to P3 ahead of Viñales.

That didn’t last long though. Di Giannantonio jumped to P3 before Marc Marquez moved his way into P2, 0.022s shy of Bagnaia. Then, after a slight lull in proceedings, we strapped in for the final flurry of rapid laps around Lusail on Friday.

Quartararo was a big mover. The 2021 World Champion ascended to P5 from outside the top 10, but that was quickly P6 as Di Giannantonio improved his PB to go to P3. Miller then crashed for the second time today, Turn 7 bit the Aussie, so that brought out the yellow flags.

That meant a lot of riders had one go at a final throw of the Practice dice. One of them was Fermin Aldeguer (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP), the rookie rose to P9, as Johann Zarco (LCR Honda Castrol) landed a last gasp lap to pinch a Q2 place away from Alex Rins (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP).

YOUR AUTOMATIC Q2 CONTENDERS IN DOHA

Austin podium finisher Di Giannantonio heads into Saturday fourth behind the leading trio, with Championship leader Alex Marquez 0.4s away from Morbidelli’s pace in P5. That aforementioned top-class lap from Quartararo means ‘El Diablo’ doesn’t have to worry about Q2, the Yamaha star was sixth fastest ahead of Acosta, Viñales, Aldeguer and Zarco.

THE CHAMP RETURNS

Unsurprisingly given the circumstances, Martin will be facing Q1 but that’s far from the point. 20 laps were completed on Friday evening for the reigning Champion, and to be 1.5s away from top spot signals a decent first day back in the new office was had. It was great to see the 2024 title winner back, now let’s see if Martin can mount a top two attack in Q1 on Saturday…

And speaking of, the all-important fight for those grid positions kicks off at 15:40 local time (UTC +3) – don’t miss it.

More, from a press release issued by Dorna:

Gonzalez returns to the top in Moto2™ Practice, Dixon crashes. 22 riders covered by less than a second, it was a hard-fought Practice session for the intermediate class and there were some fresh faces avoiding Q1 for the first time.

The all-important Moto2 Practice session is in the books for the Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar at Lusail with the top 14 moving into Q2 directly whilst the rest fight it out in Q1. Taking top spot come the close of the session, Manuel Gonzalez (LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP) who snatched top spot with a late lap, seeing him back on top after an Americas GP to forget.

Daniel Holgado (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team) was P1 going into the final five minutes but was relegated to P3 but still managed to come away with one of his best results of his rookie season. Completing the top four is Deniz Oncu (Red Bull KTM Ajo), who improved to be just less than a tenth away from top spot.

Albert Arenas (ITALJET Gresini Moto2) was the long-time leader but took the chequered flag to claim P5 and like Holgado, put in one of his best performances of the year. Zonta Van Den Goorbergh (RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP) was sixth and another rider who impressed, ahead of Barry Baltus (Fantic Racing LINO SONEGO) and Marcos Ramirez (American Racing Team), with the Spaniard a late improver. David Alonso (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team) goes into Q2 directly for the first time in his rookie Moto2™ campaign with P9 whilst there was late drama for Championship leader Jake Dixon (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team) who crashed in the closing stages at Turn 15 but was able to walk away OK; he rounded out the top ten.

Scraping through into the top 14, Alonso Lopez (Team HDR Heidrun), Adrian Huertas (Italtrans Racing Team), Mario Aji (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) and Darryn Binder (ITALJET Gresini Moto2) complete the order for the riders who managed to avoid Q1. Major names without the same advantage include Senna Agius (LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP) and Diogo Moreira (Italtrans Racing Team), both 17th and 18th.

Riding his BluCru Evan Bros Team Yamaha YZF R9 on Pirelli control tires, Oncu lapped the 2.83-mile (4.54 km) course in 1:36.184. Tom Booth-Amos was the best of the rest with a 1:36.734 on his PTR Triumph Factory Racing Street Triple RS 765, and Bo Bendsneyder earned the third and final spot on the front row with a lap time of 1:36.765 on his MV Agusta Reparto Corse F3 800 RR.

More, from a press release issued by Dorna:

TWO IN A ROW: Oncu secures Assen pole by obliterating the lap record in WorldSSP.  After a first pole last time out at Portimao, the #61 made it two in a row after setting the fastest time in Superpole at Assen.

Can Oncu (Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Team) secured his second consecutive pole position in the FIM Supersport World Championship by a huge half-a-tenth margin over Tom Booth-Amos (PTR Triumph Factory Racing) in P2 at the TT Circuit Assen. The Turkish star had waited until his sixth season to claim his first pole, but didn’t have to wait as long for his second as he smashed the lap record in Tissot Superpole to start from P1 for Race 1 at the Pirelli Dutch Round.

LIKE BUSES: you wait ages for one pole and two come along at once…

Bo Bendsneyder (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) was quick out of the blocks as he set a 1’36.765s, nine tenths clear of anyone else, before that gap closed as the 40-minute session progressed. However, with around 15 minutes remaining, Britain’s Booth-Amos posted a 1’36.734s to usurp the home hero to break the lap record set by Bendsneyder in the morning FP session. 0.031s separated the pair heading into the final run, despite the #11 often setting the fastest times in Sectors 1 and 2. However, with eight minutes remaining, they were both bested by Oncu who set a 1’36.184s to take a half-a-second margin over Booth-Amos and Bendsneyder. It is Oncu’s second consecutive pole after his Portimao success, which he converted into a Race 1 victory.

P6 FOR MANZI: places to gain for the Championship leader

Valentin Debise (Renzi Corse) was the lead Ducati rider as he claimed fourth place with a 1’36.894s, ahead of rookie Jaume Masia (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) in P5 as the Spaniard continued to impress in the early days of his WorldSSP career. Championship leader Stefano Manzi (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing) will start Race 1 from the back of the second row after claiming P6 with a 1’37.179s, lapping almost a second slower than Oncu’s pole-claiming time.

ROOKIES IMPRESS AGAIN: Cardelus P7, Alcoba P9

Xavi Cardelus (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) was seventh with a 1’37.201s as he just pipped 2017 WorldSSP Champion Lucas Mahias (GMT94-YAMAHA) to P8, with just 0.020s separating the Andorran rider and the French star. Jeremy Alcoba (Kawasaki WorldSSP Team) was ninth ahead of Philipp Oettl (Feel Racing WorldSSP Team) in tenth.

VENEMAN, DE ROSA COLLIDE: a red flag at the end of Superpole

The session was red-flagged after the chequered flag had flown for an incident at Turn 5 involving Raffaele De Rosa (QJMOTOR Factory Racing) and Loris Veneman (EAB Racing Team). Both riders were taken to the medical centre for a check-up following the crash. Elsewhere, at the start of the session, Federico Caricasulo (Motozoo ME air Racing) had a crash at Turn 11. He will start Race 1 from 32nd place.

Results FP WSBK

More, from a press release issued by Dorna:

Bulega beats Bassani on Friday at Assen as four manufacturers finish in the top four. The #11 was the rider to beat on Friday, ahead of compatriot Axel Bassani and reigning Champion Toprak Razgatlioglu.

Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) claimed top spot on Friday as the first day of the Pirelli Dutch Round for the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship concluded. Bulega was one of three riders to set a lap time in the 1’33s as he laid down his marker at the iconic TT Circuit Assen, finishing ahead of Axel Bassani (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team) as he secured a P2 finish. Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) completed the top three.

BULEGA LEADS THE WAY: more than two tenths clear at the top

Bulega was the fastest rider on Friday as he set a 1’33.592s in FP2, a session where all riders improved their time compared to FP1, while teammate Alvaro Bautista claimed P5 and lapped around half-a-second down on the #11; with Bulega one of only three riders in the 1’33s bracket. Sam Lowes (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team) was an impressive P6 after posting a 1’34.135s, finishing ahead of fellow Independent Ducati riders Andrea Iannone (Team Pata GoEleven) and Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team) in seventh and eighth. Scott Redding (MGM BONOVO Racing) secured P10, 0.597s away from P1, while Yari Montella (Barni Spark Racing Team) was less than a tenth away from the #45. Ryan Vickers (Motocorsa Racing) was 21st after he crashed at Turn 1 in FP2, though he was able to re-join the session.

BASSANI MOVES INTO SECOND: a late improvement from ‘El Bocia’

Axel Bassani (bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team) put in a late lap to surge up the order into P2 with a 1’33.844s as the lead Bimota rider, lapping two tenths slower than the pace-setting Bulega, while teammate Alex Lowes was down in 14th place with a 1’34.620s, just over a second down on the fastest time of the day.

RAZGATLIOGLU P3: three tenths from P1

Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) had been running in the top two until Bassani’s lap, but still finished the day in P3 with a 1’33.911s. At one point, both ‘El Turco’ and ‘Bulegas’ had set this lap time to tie for P1, with Bulega ahead due to his second fastest lap, before the #11 improved further. Michael van der Mark (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) finished in ninth with the Dutchman putting in a late lap to improve on his FP1 time. He finished with a 1’34.630s.

FOUR MANUFACTURERS IN THE TOP FOUR: Locatelli leads Yamaha charge

Andrea Locatelli (Pata Maxus Yamaha) topped two sectors in FP2 as he set the fourth fastest lap time with a 1’34.014s, with ‘Loka’ the only Yamaha in the top ten after their strong start in FP1 where three featured. GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team duo Dominique Aegerter and Remy Gardner were 12th and 13th respectively, while Tito Rabat (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team) and Bahattin Sofuoglu (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team) were 18th and 20th respectively. Jason O’Halloran, continuing to stand in for Jonathan Rea (Pata Maxus Yamaha), was 21st.

TECH ISSUES FOR VIERGE: difficult day for the #97

Xavi Vierge (Honda HRC) was the lead Honda rider on Friday despite technical gremlins in FP1. He was only able to set one lap time in the morning session, after two technical issues at Turn 5, but responded in FP2 with a 1’34.715s. Teammate Iker Lecuona was 19th while, with Tarran Mackenzie (PETRONAS MIE Racing Honda) three places ahead of the #7 after the #97 posted a 1’34.787s. More, from a press release issued by Dorna:

Marc Marquez P1 in Lusail FP1 as Martin returns to track action. A dominant force so far, the six-time MotoGP™ World Champion starts as he means to go on whilst the #1 of Jorge Martin rolled out of pitlane for the first time this season.

The first day of track action in the desert is underway as the Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar kicks off at the Lusail International Circuit. It offered our first chance to see reigning World Champion Jorge Martin (Aprilia Racing) on track as he returned from injury, bagging a handful laps whilst at the front, Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) bounced back from his COTA blunder to top the opening action in Qatar.

The #93 had a commanding advantage over his brother Alex Marquez (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) for the majority of the session before a late lap from Fabio Di Giannantonio fired the COTA podium-finisher into P2. COTA winner Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) was a late improver too and went P3 ahead of Championship leader Alex Marquez, whilst it was a very positive opening session for Maverick Viñales (Red Bull KTM Tech 3), the top KTM in P5.

Franco Morbidelli (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) came home in P6, with the team’s owner Valentino Rossi in attendance this weekend. Morbidelli was involved in a small on-track skirmish with 2021 World Champion Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) in the early stages, leaving the Frenchman angry as the #21 rode off the pace on the racing line before pitting. Quartararo was P11 by the end of the session. There was also drama for another Yamaha as Jack Miller (Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP) fell at Turn 4 with less than two minutes to go in the session; he was able to walk away unscathed. In addition to Miller, Johann Zarco (CASTROL Honda LCR) suffered drama on his opening lap with a technical issue at Turn 1 but did manage to get back out on track later.

Fermin Aldeguer (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) was top rookie in P7 ahead of 2020 World Champion Joan Mir (Honda HRC Castrol) in eighth. Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) was top Aprilia in ninth whilst Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) returned to the venue of his spectacular debut a year ago and completed the top ten. Martin’s first session of the racing year saw him take P20, as he gets used to the RS-GP Aprilia and to track action once again.
