MotoGP: Gresini Racing Joins Ducati, Announces 2022 Riders

THE NEW GRESINI MOTOGP PROJECT IS BORN

The future of Gresini Racing is ‘red’

Starting from next year, Gresini Racing will be back as an Independent MotoGP Team, with Ducati as the manufacturer of choice. This decision has been strongly supported by Fausto’s family, and it leads to a whole new project tied with the Borgo Panigale brand for the next two seasons.

Team Gresini will be back in full control of their Premier Class effort and will do so with the all-Italian line-up of Fabio Di Giannantonio and Enea Bastianini, two talented young riders who are no strangers to Fausto and Gresini Racing.

A big thank you goes to Aprilia Racing for the seven years spent together, which made for an especially important chapter in the history of Gresini Racing.

NADIA PADOVANI – GRESINI RACING TEAM OWNER & TEAM PRINCIPAL

“It’s a very emotional moment for each of us. In previous months, our efforts merged with a strong emotional push to shape the future of Gresini Racing, and now are immensely proud and happy to make the official announcement. It is a project born out of continuity and based on values upon which Fausto built this amazing institution. My thank you goes first and foremost to Carmelo Ezpeleta for making sure we never felt alone during these months, to Ducati for trusting our projects, to Flex-Box who joined us in this new challenge as title sponsor and obviously to Fabio and Enea: I’m sure they will give their best to wave the Gresini Racing banner high.”

GIGI DALL’IGNA – DUCATI CORSE GENERAL MANAGER

“We’re incredibly happy to have reached this agreement with Gresini Racing for the next two MotoGP seasons. We had laid down the foundations of a possible agreement with Fausto already at the end of last year and we would like to thank – from the bottom of our hearts – his family for carrying this project forward with us. Gresini Racing has been an especially important institution in MotoGP for many years and we are confident this partnership, which can count on two very talented riders such as Enea and Fabio, will be of great satisfaction for all parties involved.”

CARMELO EZPELETA – CEO DORNA SPORTS

“First of all, it is a pleasure to continue working with Gresini Racing as an Independent Team. I know how much Fausto cared about this project and I’m sure he would be very proud of it now. I had the opportunity to speak with Nadia in recent weeks and I see in her, in her sons and the whole team the determination and the great passion for this sport that characterized him so much. We’re thrilled that Gresini Racing will continue, at least, 5 more years in the Premier Class”.

OMRRA: DiBrino & Robarts Split Formula Ultra Wins At PIR

The fastest motorcycle riders in the Pacific Northwest convened in Oregon this past weekend, with the Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association (OMRRA) hosting its third round of the 2021 season, at the Portland International Raceway (PIR).

This round was the second of four planned joint-rounds with the Washington Motorcycle Road Racing Association (WMRRA), which meant large grids and close racing for the two clubs.

For the Middleweight and smaller bikes, Round #3 also marked the return to the OMRRA calendar of the chicane course at PIR, after its absence during the 2020 season. This configuration bifurcates PIR’s nearly mile-long straightaway and adds to the on-track action for the smaller bike classes.

Saturday graced the paddock with sunshine and warm temperatures, but in true PNW fashion, Sunday was a very different affair, with torrential rain and cold conditions throughout the day.

On the big bikes, the weekend’s Formula Ultra spoils were split between Andy DiBrino and Adam Robarts, and Sunday saw Kevin Pinkstaff besting DiBrino for the Open Superbike honors.

DiBrino would return the favor to Pinkstaff in the Open Supersport category though, and take the mantle as the dominant rider in the Geneva Financial Title Championship standings, with the 2021 OMRRA season now at its halfway point.

In the lower classes, the races were just as hard-fought, and this weekend we saw a big disruption to the MotoCorsa Clubman Championship standings, which are now occupied completely by Middleweight racers.

Leading those ranking we have a tie between Nathan Aldrich and Jon Campbell, with both riders showing their prowess in the wet conditions. Aldrich leads the Middleweight Superbike and Middleweight GP classes, while Campbell maintains a strong lead in the Middleweight Supersport category.

Only a handful of our vintage riders braved the blustery conditions, but those who did were rewarded with some precious championship points, which could be a factor as the season continues onward.

As such, Ryan Shanahan has squeaked ahead as the leader of the Langlitz Leathers Vintage Championship, with Matthew Winter one point behind him, and Howard Nusbaum just another point further back.

OMRRA racers return to the track July 17th-18th, again at Portland International Raceway, for another a co-hosted round with the Washington Motorcycle Road Racing Association (WMRRA).

OMRRA, incorporated in 1972 as a non-profit, volunteer run organization, has members ranging in age from 12 to over 70, racing motorcycles of many brands, sizes and ages. OMRRA operates at Portland International Raceway, a city park and world class track. For more information, visit www.omrra.com and join us at www.facebook.com/ omrra.racing and @omrra.pdx on social media.

MotoAmerica: Ford CEO Rides On Dunlop ECSTAR Two-Seat Superbike

MotoAmerica: Ford CEO Goes For 160 MPH Ride On Dunlop ECSTAR Two-Seat Superbike At Road America

Ford Motor Company President and CEO Jim Farley went for a 160mph ride with former Superbike racer Chris Ulrich on the Dunlop ECSTAR Suzuki GSX-R1000R two-seat Superbike during the MotoAmerica event this past weekend at Road America, and Farley was impressed with his experience.

“That was awesome!” said Farley, an active race car driver. “You know, the amazing thing for me is the turning. Man, you are really low! There was so much more grip than I expected. That was awesome!”

To watch a video from the ride, go here.

Farley attended the event as a guest of his friend Wayne Rainey, the President of MotoAmerica.

The Dunlop ECSTAR Two-Seat Superbike ride program is part of every MotoAmerica event and gives guests the opportunity to experience gravity-defying lean angles, the acceleration afforded by 200+ horsepower, top speeds up to and exceeding 160 mph, and more. In addition to sponsors, VIPs, celebrities, and members of the media, the rides are open to race fans for a donation to the Roadracing World Action Fund.

The Roadracing World Action Fund is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that works to prevent injuries at racetracks through advocating and facilitating the use of soft barriers, like those manufactured by Airfence and Alpina. To date, the Roadracing World Action Fund has raised over $2 million to purchase and deploy soft barriers at track days, road races, and dirt track races across America.

Rossi Moor, the 13-year-old American-Hungarian rider, has scrupulously prepared for the next two races of the Norther Talent Cup (NTC) alongside the MotoGP at Sachsenring and at the TT Assen.

Rossi Moor participated in two days of testing at Pannonia Ring Circuit in Hungary with the aim of preparing for the next two races of the Northern Talent Cup in the best possible way. Rossi was able to improve the setup of his bike so as to get the fastest lap at Pannonia Ring Circuit with a 250cc 4-stroke bike, stopping the time at an incredible in 2.03.245.

The third round of the NTC alongside the MotoGP will take place from 18 to 20 June on the highly technical Sachsenring circuit.

Rossi Moor:

“I am very happy to be racing on two tracks like Sachsering and Assen together with my MotoGP idols. I have prepared myself well and the goal is to be on the podium and recover points in the Championship. We tried some things on the bike that worked well, and so I’m ready for another two weekends to do my best. I would like to thank the Fairium Company, Fazekas Attila, Kovacs Anett, Favaro Stefano (my manager) and above all my father for the great trust and support they give me.”

Canadian Collins Finishes 21st In European Talent Cup At Catalunya

Torin Collins, riding with Team MTA, finished 21st after a progressing from his starting position of 32nd on the grid at Round 3 of the FIM CEV Repsol Hawkers European Talent Cup, held June 12-13 at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Collins, age 15, was one of 38 riders who qualified for the race out of 51 entrants in the single-make class competing on Honda NSF250Rs despite it being his first time at this track and having recently been given the all clear to start training again. Torin fractured his foot as a result of a nasty highside crash in Race 2 at Valencia (Round 2).

The Canadian had a good start gaining five positions but fell back after some jostling in the first few corners. He then worked on making his way through the group of five he was in and put his head down to catch the next group, two seconds ahead. He was able to do that and work his way through that group but ran out of laps to catch the next group of riders.

Looking forward, Torin will be travelling to Portugal for Round 4 at Autodromo do Algarve, a track he raced at last year in the ETC.

“The race weekend was a tough one,” said Collins. “I had never ridden this track before, so I had to learn the track. In the race I was chasing the group ahead that were battling for P10. Leaving Barcelona I have learnt a lot and hope for a top 15-finish soon.”

Torin Collins is thankful for the support of Arai Helmets, Vircos Suits, Bickle Racing, Cycle Works Calgary, Blackfoot Motorsports, SBK Paint, Novalda Coaching & Consulting and Taylor Racing.

Follow Torin’s journey on Facebook (Torin Collins Racing) and Instagram (@torincollinsracing). For more information about Torin Collins or if you would like to become involved as a sponsor please contact [email protected]

MotoGP: Rins Will Try To Ride At Sachsenring

ALEX RINS MAKES HIS RETURN THIS WEEKEND IN GERMANY

Team Suzuki Ecstar and the MotoGP™ World Championship are preparing for another dose of back-to-back rounds following a short break after the Mugello-Catalunya double header.

The first stop will the Sachsenring circuit in Germany, where Alex Rins will make a tentative comeback following injury and Joan Mir aims to build on his championship points with another strong finish.

During the build-up for the Catalan GP on June 3rd, Rins suffered a crash while cycling around the Circuit of Barcelona-Catalunya. He was diagnosed by Doctor Xavier Mir with an “articular fracture of the right distal radius with a small displacement and high inflammation”. He underwent surgery at the Universitari Dexeus Hospital in Barcelona which saw the successful fixation of two screws. Two days later he began rehabilitation and gentle training and he has now been cleared to ride.

On Wednesday morning, June 16th, Rins revisited the Universitari Dexeus Hospital to undergo some checks and his stitches were removed before travelling to Sachsenring. Doctor Xavier Mir said: “After removing the stitches and checking his wrist we consider the mobility of the injury is pretty good and he will try to race in Germany. Of course he could suffer some pain during the sessions and he might need some physiotherapy”.

In the past, both Suzuki’s riders have achieved some strong results at this technical track, with Mir taking victory in the Moto3 class in 2017 and following it up with second a year later in Moto2. In his debut MotoGP season in 2019 he achieved seventh at the circuit, but Germany was missed off last year’s disrupted calendar. Rins has enjoyed two podiums here in the past, also in the Moto3 and Moto2 classes.

A feature of the MotoGP™ calendar for the past 23 years, Sachsenring is considered by many to be one of the Grand Prix ‘classics’. One of the most prominent features was added in 2001 and it’s known as the ‘waterfall’, turn 11’s plunging downhill right-hander creates a spectacle for fans but a challenge for mechanics and engineers.

Situated in leafy-green Saxony, the circuit’s location in the far east of Germany makes an ideal meeting place for fans from across central and eastern Europe. In a ‘usual’ season this would mean a huge number of spectators adding to the atmosphere, but sadly this year the grandstands will remain empty.

Curiosity – GP of Germany: It is the second slowest track on the calendar, using full gas, or wide open throttle, for only 15% of a hot lap. It’s also the shortest track in the Championship at just 3700 m.

Joan Mir:

“It will be good to ride in Germany again, I was here in my rookie season in MotoGP and I did well, but obviously we missed out on coming here last year. It’s a circuit I like, it’s quite technical with a lot of ups and downs and blind corners. There are far more left turns that right, so it’s important to make up the difference in the lefts. Tyre management is important, and you have to be very precise with your lines. There are not many good overtaking spots, but there’s the first corner and also just after the waterfall section, although in general it’s a hard track to pass at. I’m looking forward to trying for a strong result.”

Alex Rins:

“I went to see Doctor Mir for some checks and I feel quite well. He took out the stitches and the bone seems almost fixed. I have some pain when moving my wrist, so I will keep working on my recovery during these days. In any case, I will try to give it my all. We didn’t race in Sachsenring last year, so I’m really looking forward to getting back on track here in Germany. I’m very pleased to be back with the team; I can’t wait to see them all and return to racing with my GSX-RR.”

Shinichi Sahara – Project Leader & Team Director:

“We’re glad to see Alex Rins back on track this weekend after his injury and surgery in Catalunya. It will be tricky for him to come back at full strength, but he has already started his rehabilitation and the injury is healing well. This is quite a physical circuit for the riders, despite the short lap, so it won’t be easy for him but we know he is ready to push hard and recover from this bad patch. Joan Mir has had some nice consistent finishes during the last races, and we’re confident that he can continue to build on this success. We had a test after the race in Catalunya and we’ve worked on some small but useful adjustments which could help us in our quest. Sachsenring is not an easy track but we’re feeling ready for the weekend.”

Duran, semi-retired but always up for the challenge of racing at the fast 2.5-mile main track at Willow, got his Dunlop-shod Duran Racing/Dream Racing machine to the line just ahead of David Price, who led and then harried Duran all the way on his Tuned Industries BPR Racing Yamaha YZF-R1. Terry Heard took third both times out on his Cha-Cha-Cha Motorsports backed, Pirelli-shod Kawasaki ZX-10R.

While Duran entered only the Formula One races, both Price and Heard were on the grid multiple times and came away with first-place hardware of their own.

Price took his Yamaha to the victories in the A Superbike races on both days. On Saturday, Price finished ahead of Heard and Thomas Asseo, Co-CEO of the Fresh n’ Lean meal delivery company. (While Asseo was racing at Willow, Jake Gagne was taking the Fresh n’ Lean Attack Performance Yamaha Racing YZF-R1 to a pair of wins in MotoAmerica Superbike competition at Road America.) On Sunday, Price crossed the line ahead of Heard and Cesar Meza.

Heard won both A Superstock races, finishing ahead of Ruben Soto and Rayme Jelski on Saturday and ahead of Soto and Lee McNutt on Sunday.

Mookie Wilkerson ran the mediumweight Superbike table over the weekend, taking the B Superbike and C Superbike wins on Saturday and Sunday.

Australian Superbike: Series Racing At Hidden Valley Next Weekend

ASBK Ready To Rumble In The Valley

This weekend’s round of the mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul (ASBK), is the first time since 2018 that the premier national class has visited the challenging Hidden Valley Raceway, and all riders are ready to rumble in Darwin on the magnificent layout.

This is also the first time that the Alpinestars Superbike class in almost a decade have shared the stage with Supercars as part of this weekend’s Merlin Darwin Triple Crown.

Hidden Valley Raceway may be short in distance at 2.8km, but it is extremely demanding requiring precision, commitment, aggression, and courage from riders for a good lap of the circuit that many consider one of the very best in Australia.

The 1km long main straight starts the challenge, topping nearly 300kmph before the bravery of late braking takes over for the critical turn one. From there it is a charge over the undulating variations of the track to the daunting right-hand, turn five, before another hard braking spot at turn 6, then the charge over the last half of the track through one of the most confronting corners in Australia at turn 10. It is an intense corner to get correct, for the final part of the lap, but extremely easy to misjudge, and run out of bitumen. From there the next three corners are basically straight-lined into the final turn 14 where the drag race begins again.

The ASBK Championship first visited the track in the late ‘90s and has visited sporadically over the years.

ASBK returned in 2010 for four successive years before a mid-decade hiatus with a return of all the championship classes in 2017 and 2018.

The 12 races over those six visits have produced six different winners, with four of them all in with a chance this weekend.

The most successful rider at Hidden Valley is three-times Australian Superbike Champion, Josh Waters.

Josh was scintillating in his performances when he won five of the six races from 2010-12, riding a Suzuki, although he didn’t race here in 2013 as he was competing in the British Superbike Championship.

On his return to Australia, he added two more to his tally when the championship returned in 2017, and he smashed his own lap record by over a second (1:05.986), on his way to his third title that year.

This year, he is racing for Kawasaki BC Performance on a brand new ZX-10R that is in the early stages of development. Waters will no doubt take inspiration from his team-mate’s results here in 2018, as Bryan Staring aboard the BC Performance machine finished second and third and has been on the podium a total of four times at Hidden Valley.

2018 was a watershed year for ASBK at Hidden Valley with moments of history created over that particular weekend. The major standout of that year was the appearance of three-times World Superbike Champion, Troy Bayliss on his DesmoSport Ducati Panigale, and he proved that there was plenty of hunger left in the man that turned 50-years-old that year.

In qualifying for the event, Bayliss staked an early claim as he set the fastest ever lap for a motorcycle around the track (1:05.601), then in the opening race, led every lap in an exceptional battle with two-times Australian Champion, Troy Herfoss (Penrite Racing Honda CBR1000RR) and 2010 champion, Bryan Staring, to break through for his maiden win and an historic victory in the Championship.

Bayliss went oh-so-close to claiming the double win. He and Herfoss had another Herculean battle that went down to the final laps.  Slicing and dicing for the lead, with less than four laps remaining, Bayliss hit a false-neutral in his bike as he barreled into the turn 6 hairpin and ran off track briefly. In his charge back, he overcooked it going into the extremely daunting turn 10 and dropped back to seventh. Herfoss won the race and broke the race lap record in the process (1:05.904), from Staring with Wayne Maxwell – riding for Yamaha – in third.

Those minor mistakes by Bayliss put a dent in his Championship hopes and graphically demonstrated the extremely thin line that overshadows every race at Hidden Valley and how precise, and inch-perfect, one must be.

Bayliss finished third overall in the Championship behind 2018 Champion, Herfoss with Maxwell in second place, just three points ahead of the mercurial Bayliss.

Bayliss will be otherwise engaged this weekend looking after his son, Oli, in his rookie year in the ASBK Championship on the DesmoSport Ducati but the usual suspects will be there also.

It is not beyond the realms of possibility that Oli could end up on the podium as he has finished fourth in his second race on the Ducati 1098V4R.

Most of the leading contenders in this year’s title chase have tasted the victory champagne in the tropics and it is anyone’s guess who will rise to the occasion in the two races at Hidden Valley this weekend.

In the four races held this year in the mi-bike Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Motul, the wins have been equally shared between defending ASBK champion Wayne Maxwell on the Boost Mobile with K-tech Ducati Panigale V4R, and his fiercest rival and very good mate, Troy Herfoss on the Penrite Honda.

It has been the Herfoss and Maxwell show this year with the pair sharing the wins at two-apiece with some close proximity but fair racing that will be remembered for years, but this track rewards horsepower and handling in equal measure so it opens up the challenge to the rivals that is led by Oli’s teammate, 2019 Champion Mike Jones, who sits third in the title chase.

Maxwell and Herfoss have both won at the venue with Maxwell a further four podium places, and Herfoss has three podium finishes. The other current rider that has won at Hidden Valley is Glenn Allerton on the Maxima Racing Oils BMW.

Allerton is another rider with three ASBK titles and after a wretched couple of seasons afflicted by injury, is back to his race pace and is sure to have the BMW on song with his rivals.

There are a few others worth keeping a close watch on; Unitech Racing’s Arthur Sissis is a leading privateer. Due to his experienced and success in Speedway he is a gun starter and is often the leader at the first turn. Also, since his switch to Yamaha this year, his race consistency has improved dramatically.

Allerton’s teammate, Lachlan Epis, has improved at every outing and qualified fourth for the rounds at Winton and Wakefield Park. Once he finds the missing piece in the jigsaw of sustained race pace he will be knocking on the door of a podium, and that could well be this weekend.

Leading the way this year for Yamaha will be 2018 Australian Supersport Champion, Yamaha Racing Team’s Cru Halliday. Halliday won both races here in 2018 in dominant fashion and now that he is back on a 1000cc, factory-supported machine will no doubt be keeping his rivals honest.

Besides a championship battle between riders and manufacturers there is also the bragging rights in the tyre war. The majority of the field run Pirelli rubber while Herfoss is the leading rider using the French Michelin tyres and the Kawasaki BC Performance team run on Dunlops.

The action promises to be as hot as the tropical sun that will shine on the drama that is sure to unfold. If you have never seen Superbike racing before you are about to witness something very special.

Fans can catch every practice and qualifying session on Fox Sports Australia. The Saturday and Sunday ASBK race action will also feature as part of Channel 7’s free-to-air coverage.

ROSSI MOOR OF FAIRIUM NGRT READY FOR THE NEXT ROUNDS OF THE NORTHER TALENT CUP OF SACHSENRING AND ASSEN.

Chris Duran dusted off his BMW S1000RR and stormed to a pair of wins in the Formula One races at the Lucas Oil Products WERA West Sportsman Series doubleheader at Willow Springs International Raceway.
