Dramatic racing, incredible battles and more featured throughout Race 1 at the French Round

The first race of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship at the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours delivered action throughout the 21-lap encounter with Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) taking victory with an incredible performance of pace and consistency to win by more than four seconds as he gained a five-point swing over nearest rival Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) at the Motul French Round, while title rival Scott Redding (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) endured a difficult Saturday in France as he finished 12th in Race 1.

THE TOP TWO BATTLE IT OUT IN THE EARLY STAGES

Razgatlioglu got a good start and took the lead through Turn 1 but soon found himself shuffled back thanks to the run down to the Turn 5 hairpin of Adelaide. He responded when Rea took the lead and made a move on Lap 4 at Adelaide to reclaim the lead of the race before he was able to pull out enough of a gap to keep Rea at arm’s length.

Rea was able to respond as the laps progressed, closing the gap to just a couple of tenths but could not make a move stick before Razgatlioglu extended his lead out in front to more than a second ahead of Rea, holding on to secure his second victory in a row following on from his win in Race 2 at Navarra. Rea’s second place extends his winless drought to seven races since he won at Assen in Race 2. Razgatlioglu showed remarkable consistent pace throughout the 21-lap encounter, always lapping in the 1’37s bracket and he also becomes the first Yamaha rider to take 18 podiums in a single season.

Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) claimed his third podium in WorldSBK with third place after he got a good start to the race to move up the field from fifth place, before battling the even faster-starting Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) for fourth place; eventually passing the Italian at Turn 5 on Lap 12. He then gained a position on Lap 17 when Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) crashed at Turn 8 on Lap 17, forcing the British rider out of the race. It meant Locatelli was able to claim third place with Rinaldi being promoted to fourth

COMPLETING THE TOP TEN

Michael van der Mark (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) claimed fifth place after battling from ninth on the grid, with the Dutchman enduring a difficult morning with no running in Free Practice 3. He finished two seconds clear of Alvaro Bautista (Team HRC) in sixth place as all five manufacturers were represented in the top six.

There was a stunning battle for seventh place during the race between numerous riders which came down to the final chicane. Chaz Davies (Team GoEleven) came home in seventh place with rookie Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) and Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) finishing eighth and ninth. Leon Haslam (Team HRC) rounded out the top ten after starting inside the top six as the British rider fell back throughout the latter stages of the race.

TAKING POINTS

American star Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) claimed 11th place, behind the incredible battle for seventh place, just two tenths away from Haslam. Scott Redding (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) started from eighth place and was unable to fight his way through the field as he fell back down through the order to take 12th place despite a Lap 19 crash as he looked to make a move on Sykes at Turn 13; Redding making no contact with Sykes but coming off his bike before he re-joined the race. Local rider Christophe Ponsson (Gil Motor Sport – Yamaha) was 13th at his home round as he claimed more points for his campaign, finishing less than a second ahead of Tito Rabat (Barni Racing Team), with Isaac Viñales (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) rounding out the points.

TO NOTE

Jonas Folger (Bonovo MGM Action) had a difficult race but came home in 16th place while Kohta Nozane (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) and Loris Cresson (OUTDO TPR Team Pedercini Racing) had a battle for 17th place that went down to the line; the duo separated by just 0.082s as Nozane beat Cresson. Leandro Mercado (MIE Racing Honda Team) was the only other retirement apart from Lowes after he crashed out Turn 13 in the early stages of the race.

P1 Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK)

“Yesterday we worked a lot because I need a consistent lap time. In this race, I was riding relaxed because I knew I was fast, so I was trying for consistent lap times. I’m really happy to win again. Thanks to my team because they did an incredible job this weekend and also tomorrow, we will try again. At the finish, I did a stoppie. This is my dream this year. I waited until this track and I needed more of a gap.”

P2 Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK)

“I could be there. He had a really good rhythm out in front. It was obviously much easier to follow; I could use him as a gauge. When I was getting closer, I was having some issues. In the back of my head, it was today’s just not my day. The team worked hard, and the bike felt good, just not good enough to fight with Toprak. He did an incredible job so congratulations to him and his team. It gives us some work for us to do for tomorrow but I’m sure we can find a way to try to bridge the gap a little bit and try to have more of a fight tomorrow.”

P3 Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK)

“I’m really happy and we enjoy the moment because we are very fast, and we did a really good job. Unfortunately, in the first part of the race, I’m not really fast and lose a little bit of time with the front but in the end we got another podium and this is the way, it’s fantastic. My Yamaha family are very nice, it’s a big group and we will continue in this way.”

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (September 4, 2021) – Reigning AFT Singles champion Dallas Daniels (No. 1 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F) rebounded following his recent catastrophic Peoria TT outing, doubling up at the Springfield Short Track Doubleheader in improbable fashion on Friday night in Springfield, Illinois.

It wasn’t as simple as a standard sweep of the checkered flags at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, however, as Daniels was faced with back-to-back disasters before ultimately walking away with a redemptive double win to successfully reignite his title defense in front of the home fans.

Main Event 1

A little earlier in the evening it looked as if Trevor Brunner (No. 21 American Honda/Progressive Insurance CRF450R) had returned to the scene of his maiden victory and added a second to his career tally, albeit in controversial fashion.

With less than two minutes remaining on the clock of the opening Main Event, Brunner and fellow ‘20 Springfield Short Track winner Daniels broke free from Daniels’ teammate, Mikey Rush (No. 15 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F), and fast qualifier Kody Kopp (No. 143 Smartop/Jones Honda/Latus Motors CRF450R), to engage in a two-rider duel for the win.

Daniels showed Brunner a wheel twice before finally executing what felt like the race’s decisive maneuver with the clock near expiration and just two brief laps remaining to seal a timely win.

Brunner had other plans, barging up the inside in the race’s final corner. The resulting contact sent Daniels tumbling to the dirt, which brought out a late red and left Daniels’ title hopes in serious jeopardy.

After initially being recognized as the race winner, a contrite Brunner admitted, “I would never replicate that pass again. We’re all riding aggressive and we’re all riding hard, but I understand on my part that was a bad judgement call, and my deepest apologies to the whole Estenson Racing team…

“I just wanted to go for the win. Everybody out here wants to win. We’ll do what we have to do, but in some instances some moves aren’t right to make. I flirted with that line tonight, and I know it was over the line.”

After intensive review by Progressive American Flat Track officials, the final results reverted to the running order on the lap prior to the incident (the last lap completed by all active riders still on the lead lap). Daniels was therefore ultimately awarded the win. And, as Brunner was designated the sole cause of the red flag, he was dropped down to the back of the lead lap and hence credited with 11th.

The Brunner-Daniels incident elevated one-time race leader Rush to second in the final order, at last ending the veteran ace’s seven-race podium drought. It also bumped Morgen Mischler (No. 13 Mission Roof Systems KTM 450 SX-F) — who tracked down and overhauled Kopp late — to third to increase his season’s podium haul to eight.

Kopp finished fourth while Brunner’s teammate, Cole Zabala (No. 51 American Honda/Progressive Insurance CRF450R), rounded out the top five.

Title leader Max Whale (No. 18 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing 450 SX-FFE) came home in sixth.

Main Event 2

Main Event 2 was nearly as hectic, although Daniels largely managed to escape the crossfire in the rematch thanks to some skillful maneuvering on the tight arena.

That said, despite getting first pick as the fast qualifier, the champ was immediately dropped to fourth behind Zabala, Brunner and Kopp. Less than a chaotic minute into the race, teammates Brunner and Zabala came together while disputing the lead, this time with Zabala hitting the deck and forcing another red flag.

Brunner assumed the lead at the restart with Daniels right on his tail, while Zabala found himself having to fight his way up from the back of the field.

Daniels made a tidy and drama-free pass for the lead with just over two minutes remaining and quickly stretched out a big enough gap to prevent another last-corner surprise. However, that important work was undone by another red flag; this time when Rush crashed after being contacted by Mischler in their scrap for third as the clock hit 0:00.

This set up a three-lap shootout for victory, seemingly putting another surefire Daniels win in doubt. Those fears were instantly erased by a strong launch from the staggered restart as the bar-banging ensued enmasse just behind.

“After a weekend like Peoria… that was tough,” Daniels said. “I haven’t been in that position so far in my career, and it was a little sad because I thought we had the speed there (to win). I was definitely sore coming into here, but the team, man, they believe in me. I can’t thank the whole Estenson Racing Monster Energy Yamaha team enough. It’s just super crazy that we could rebound like this.”

Brunner held on for second, followed by fellow rising star Kopp. Zabala somehow charged his way up to fourth with Mischler close behind fifth. Perhaps even more impressive than Zabala’s race-long comeback was that of Rush, who slashed his way from last to seventh in that three-lap scramble.

Whale, meanwhile, was shuffled back from sixth to ninth over that same span. As a result, Daniels has reclaimed the title lead by seven points (231-224) with just three races left to determine the 2021 AFT Singles crown.

The Springfield Short Track Doubleheader will air on NBCSN on Sunday, September 19, at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. The broadcast will feature both Main Events as well as exclusive features and cutting-edge aerial drone and onboard footage.

Daniels Reclaims Points Lead at Springfield Short Track Doubleheader

Estenson Racing’s Dallas Daniels returned to the top, sweeping last night’s Progressive Springfield Short Track doubleheader at the Illinois State Fairgrounds to move back into the points lead in the AFT Singles Championship. His teammate Mikey Rush ended the night with a runner-up finish and an impressive seventh-place result despite an incident that put him on the ground in the final laps of the second Main Event.

It was a marathon night for the AFT Singles riders at the Illinois State Fairgrounds Arena, having to race two Semis and two Main Events on the same night for a total of 72 laps. Daniels and Rush were on par for a good outing, qualifying third and fourth, respectively. The pair also had a good result in their Semis, taking runner-up finishes to start on the front row for the first Main Event.

They both got a good start, with Rush quickly moving to the lead and the defending champion in fourth. Daniels advanced to third before the halfway point and then passed his teammate five laps later. He continued his forward charge and took over the lead just before the clock ran out. Unfortunately, on the final lap, the competition made contact with him in Turn 3, putting him on the ground. After intensive review from the officials, the running order was reverted to the lap prior to the incident, and Daniels was credited with the win, with Rush right behind in second.

Daniels came out swinging in the second half of the evening and won his Semi race. After the start of the second Main, he quickly moved to third. The red flag came out three laps into the race after a rider up front went down, putting him second in the staggered restart. He made his move to the front with around two minutes remaining, and then the race was red-flagged again with seconds left on the clock after his teammate Rush went down. It was a three-lap sprint, so Daniels put his head down and went unchallenged to take his second win of the night and fourth this season. The double win at his home race was an important 27-points haul that moved the Illinois rider back to the top of the points standings, giving him a seven-point lead with three rounds remaining.

Starting from the second row of the grid, Rush had a good start inside of the top five. He was fourth after the restart and advanced to the final podium spot before the halfway mark. Unfortunately, another rider made contact with him in the final moments of the race, and the Californian went down. Starting at the back of the grid in the staggered restart, Rush put his head down and put on an impressive charge back to seventh.

The Estenson Racing team is right back at it tomorrow as they head over to the big track for some twin racing at the Springfield Mile I and II on September 4-5. Next up for the AFT Singles team is another Progressive American Flat Track doubleheader at the legendary Sacramento Mile on September 11-12.

Tommy Hayden – Estenson Racing Team Manager

“It was a wild night here in Springfield that ultimately ended in a good night for us with Dallas winning both Main Events and retaking the points lead. We came in here with a pretty big deficit, so it was a big turnaround in the points as the season is coming to a close. Mikey showed good speed all day and got a podium in the first race. He was in contention for another podium in the second race, but unfortunately, a rider came underneath him, and he went down. It was a staggered restart, and he was dead last with three laps to go and came all the way back to seventh. I’m proud of him for keeping on charging like that. We will now shift our focus to the last three races and end the year strong.”

Dallas Daniels – Estenson Racing AFT Singles

“It was a bit of a crazy day at the Springfield Short Track. I really wanted to get this win after Peoria. That was a really tough weekend and it was not a fun week leading up to Springfield. I was definitely sore coming into this doubleheader, but I always love coming here. It’s a home race for me, and the track conditions are always good. We got off to a good start, had some good Semi races, and were able to win both Main Events. I’m so happy to rebound like this. It was a bit of an emotional win for myself and the team after Peoria and what we went through there, so it was definitely awesome.”

Mikey Rush – Estenson Racing AFT Singles

“I’m happy to be back on the podium after a rough go at the last few rounds. It was a rollercoaster night, though. I’m bummed about going down in the second Main Event while I was running third with three laps to go, but I came back through to seventh with not a lot of time left. I’m looking forward to going to the Sacramento Mile in a few weeks for my home race. I’m really hungry for a win! I have to give a big thanks to the whole Estenson team for all of their hard work. I couldn’t do it without them.”

British Superbike: Hickman Leads Practice At Snetterton

Editorial Note: American Brandon Paasch, riding his Dynavolt Triumph Street Triple RS 765, was 7th in combined British Supersport practice times on Friday at Snetterton. Paasch’s best lap time of 1:54.308 was 2.200 seconds behind the fastest rider Jack Kennedy on his HEL Performance/Bournemouth Kawasaki ZX-6R.

Hickman holds off chasing pack with last lap shuffle in SUPERPICKS Free Practice times at Snetterton

Peter Hickman claimed the upper hand in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Snetterton this afternoon. The FHO Racing BMW rider saved his best until last to maintain his position as the leader of the pack after the second SUPERPICKS Free Practice session in Norfolk.

The session began with Glenn Irwin becoming the first rider to improve on his time from the opening practice, but Hickman was soon gaining ground and he moved to within 0.202s after the first ten minutes.

Meanwhile reigning champion Josh Brookes was having a resurgence as he fired in a string of flying laps on the VisionTrack Ducati to move to the top, and then continued to improve to increase his margin over his rivals.

The Australian had the edge with five minutes remaining on the clock, just ahead of championship leader Jason O’Halloran who had jumped up the order into second place on the McAMS Yamaha.

Lee Jackson was on a sequence of flying laps though and in the final minute he had launched the FS-3 Racing Kawasaki into second place and just an incredible 0.003s adrift of Brookes at the top.

However, a final lap dash from Hickman put him back at the top of the times as the FHO Racing BMW rider, and the returning Danny Buchan, pulled out a lap time inside the existing lap record to claim the top two positions ahead of tomorrow’s SUPERPICKS Qualifying and BikeSocial Race 1.

Brookes maintained third ahead of Jackson with O’Halloran dropping to fifth in the final moments of the session.

Glenn Irwin was sixth for Honda Racing after running inside the top three earlier in the session, holding off Rory Skinner who had a strong opening day in Norfolk.

Bradley Ray had approached the final five minutes of the session inside the top five, but the flurry of improvements in the closing stages meant he finished eighth on combined times ahead of the leading Buildbase Suzuki of Gino Rea.

Tommy Bridewell completed the top ten ahead of Tarran Mackenzie and Andrew Irwin, with the leading 12 riders progressing directly into tomorrow’s Qualifying 2 session.

The first riders to miss out on the top 12 and will need to progress through Qualifying 1 tomorrow include local ace Ryan Vickers, Christian Iddon and Dan Linfoot.

Peter Hickman – FHO Racing BMW

Fastest in SUPERPICKS Free Practice combined times

“It has been fantastic day and really we have been following on from what we did at Cadwell Park, so I need to thank all of the FHO Racing BMW team.

“I have never done a 1m:47s lap around Snetterton before, let alone come close to a 1m:46s this afternoon, so I am really happy with that.

“I have traditionally during my career been rubbish in qualifying and getting those flying laps in, so this year I have really been practicing it and trying to get that super quick lap in – it seems to have worked!

“That said, our pace even on used tyres was strong so I am happy with how this first day has gone, we need to keep working on that, and I might even treat myself to a bit of cake now!”

More, from a press release issued by Dynavolt Triumph:

Smith finds the pace on day one at Snetterton

Kyle Smith was fourth quickest for Dynavolt Triumph as round 7 of the 2021 Quattro Group British Supersport Championship got underway today at Snetterton in Norfolk.

Smith made steady progress in FP1 ending the session in seventh with a time of 1’54.819.  Following a few set-up changes for FP2, Smith really found the pace with a huge step forward, improving his time by over two seconds to 1’52.503 to finish the day fourth on the combined timesheets.

Kyle Smith: “To be honest I had a difficult start this morning, not feeling that comfortable with the bike and then we made some changes for this afternoon and I felt a lot more comfortable and didn’t feel too far off the pace. I don’t feel like we are 100% there yet but if we can carry on progressing as we have done from this morning to this afternoon again tomorrow I think we can be on the pace for the race.”

Teammate Brandon Paasch had a frustrating opening day at the fast, Norfolk circuit when he experienced a technical issue with gear shifting just six laps into FP2 which meant he couldn’t improve on his time of 1’54.308 set in the morning session.

Brandon Paasch: “Day one here at Snetterton didn’t really go to plan. A little bit frustrating but I’ll come back tomorrow, try and go faster and get back to the front, that’s the plan.”

Dynavolt Triumph Team Manager Simon Buckmaster: “A big improvement by Kyle from FP1 to FP2.  We made some changes and I would honestly say the changes made a difference but also Kyle rode so much better in FP2. He was fastest for a long while and ended up fourth but right there in the fight putting a lot of fast laps together. There’s more to come, we had a little bit of chatter that we need to sort out but a huge step forward, really good race pace and we’ll look to challenge for pole position in qualifying tomorrow and challenge in the race.  Fair play to the boys and Devis at Bitubo for making the changes that made Kyle feel much more comfortable and perform much better on the bike.”

“Brandon was pretty good in FP1 but in FP2 we had some problems with gear shifting.  We didn’t get the chance to fix it for him because he stamped on the gear lever so hard he broke it and got left out on track. That’s not really the professional way to behave.  He’s young, we have discussed things and I am sure he will learn from this.  Things don’t always go our way. But it’s disappointing for his team for that to happen.  He is happy with his bike setting and I’m sure that he will also be challenging for the front two rows of the grid in qualifying tomorrow.”
