MotoAmerica: Supersport Ace Richie Escalante Joins Team Hammer For 2022

Team Hammer, Inc. is excited to announce the signing of Richie Escalante to compete in the 2022 MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Road Racing Series.

The 26-year-old Escalante joins forces with M4 ECSTAR Suzuki after spending the previous two seasons as the team’s most fierce competitor in the battle for the MotoAmerica Supersport Championship. Escalante became the first Mexican to win an AMA Pro/MotoAmerica National road racing championship in 2020 with a stunning 13-win, 16-podium Supersport campaign. He backed that up with a strong three-win, 14-podium effort in his title defense, ultimately finishing as 2021 runner-up to his great rival, Sean Dylan Kelly, who won 12 races and 17 podiums and is graduating into the Moto2 World Championship in 2022.

A native of Tizayuca, Mexico, Escalante will slot into SDK’s place aboard a Team Hammer-prepared Suzuki GSX-R with the expectation of continuing the championship-winning ways of both himself and the squad.

“First off, I am very happy to work with Team Hammer, so thanks to (team owners) John and Chris Ulrich for this opportunity,” said Escalante. “My goal is to get the Number One plate back and I am ready to start working towards our goal. I learned a lot this past season and I think that will help me be even more competitive this year. I am also ready to see how my aggressive style works on the Suzuki. I like to push hard and slide under braking and the Suzuki seems like a great bike. The Daytona 200 has also been a goal of mine so I am really looking forward to getting started and winning the most races possible this coming year.”

Prior to his emergence as a Supersport superstar, Escalante established himself as a race winner and title contender in Superstock 600 competition. He continued his rapid development as a professional racer with a pair of podium-winning seasons in 2018 and 2019, in which he finished the season ranked sixth, and fifth, respectively, before his historic 2020 campaign. Escalante has repeatedly shown himself to be a determined and relentless racer, equally capable of running away at the front or launching late-race assaults for the checkered flag.

“We’ve seen what Richie can do on the racetrack and we’ve always had a lot of respect for his abilities,” said Team Hammer’s Chris Ulrich. “He was so dominant in 2020 en route to his championship that our team had to step up our technical program. Richie has always been on our radar as a racer we’d like to work with. Now the time is right. We know how good Richie is and we think he can be even better with our technical package.”

About Team Hammer

The 2021 season marked Team Hammer’s 41st consecutive year of operating as a professional road racing team. Racebikes built and fielded by Team Hammer have won 128 AMA Pro and MotoAmerica National races, have finished on AMA Pro and MotoAmerica National podiums 332 times and have won 11 AMA Pro and MotoAmerica National Championships, as well as two FIM South American Championships (in Superbike and Supersport.) The team has also won 137 endurance races overall (including seven 24-hour races) and 13 Overall WERA National Endurance Championships with Suzuki motorcycles, and holds the U.S. record for mileage covered in a 24-hour race. The team also competed in the televised 1990s Formula USA National Championship, famously running “Methanol Monster” GSX-R1100 Superbikes fueled by methanol, and won four F-USA Championships.

Dyno Testing: Chasing Missing Power, In The November Issue

Featured In the November 2021 issue of Roadracing World:

How much power does the most recent Ducati Streetfighter make? The answer depends on what gear you’re in. The question arose when Roadracing World tested a kitted 2021 Ducati Streetfighter, which felt as fast as anything on the street and on the track, but on the dyno barely managed to clear 156 bhp at the rear wheel.

For a machine that Ducati said put out 205 bhp at the crank, one that was fitted with a titanium race exhaust and mapped for the new pipe, it was a mystery…

—Chasing Missing Horsepower In The Electronic Age, by Michael Gougis

Rev limits, rider aids, power maps, gear-limited output curves, encrypted chips—as motorcycles get more and more sophisticated, testing them on the dyno has become more challenging. For example, simply switching from fourth to fifth gear on the newest Ducati Streetfighter boosts power a cool 25 bhp at the top end! Take a look at dyno testing in the electronic age in the latest issue of Roadracing World!

MotoGP: Ducati Reviews Its Successful 2021 Season

MotoGP 2021. A fantastic season for Ducati in numbers

Last Sunday, at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo of Cheste, near Valencia (Spain), a MotoGP season destined to remain in Ducati’s history ended. In 2021, The Borgo Panigale-based manufacturer has indeed achieved the following significant results:

– 2021 was the best year ever for Ducati in terms of podium finishes in MotoGP. The Borgo Panigale-based factory scored 24 podiums with five different riders: Pecco Bagnaia, Jack Miller, Jorge Martín, Johann Zarco and Enea Bastianini. It is a record for Ducati, which has 2019 as its second-best year with 17 podiums.

– With seven victories in MotoGP in 2021, Ducati is the manufacturer that achieved the most successes this year. Eleven is the record of wins obtained by the Italian manufacturer in a single season and dates back to 2007.

– For the first time since its MotoGP debut in 2003, Ducati placed three of its bikes on the podium in a single Grand Prix. This happened in the final round of the 2021 season; the Gran Premio de la Comunitat Valenciana won by Pecco Bagnaia ahead of Jorge Martín and Jack Miller.

– Ducati won the Constructors’ Title for the second consecutive year and the third in its MotoGP history. Five riders contributed to the title win with 357 total points: Pecco Bagnaia (167 points), Jack Miller (63 points), Johann Zarco (86 points), Jorge Martín (25 points) and Enea Bastianini (16 points).

– The Ducati Lenovo Team won the MotoGP Teams’ World Title with 433 points. It is the second World Title won by Ducati’s factory team. The first came in 2007 when Ducati also won its first Constructors’ World Title, and Casey Stoner became World Champion.

– For the first time in Ducati’s MotoGP history, the front row of the grid at the Grand Prix of Made in Italy and Emilia Romagna was occupied by three Ducati bikes. Bagnaia took pole position in qualifying ahead of teammate Jack Miller and fellow Ducati rider Luca Marini. The same thing happened in the last Grand Prix of the season where Jorge Martín (Pramac Racing Team) started from pole position, ahead of Bagnaia and Miller.

– In every Grand Prix held in the 2021 season, at least one Ducati has started from the front row of the grid. Of the 54 front row positions available in the 18 Grands Prix contested, the Italian manufacturer has obtained 30. It means that Ducati bikes have occupied 55% of the front rows this season.

– The Ducati Lenovo Team riders have started from the front row of the grid, from the first two positions, on three occasions this year: at the San Marino GP, the Emilia Romagna GP and the Algarve GP.

– In 8 out of the 18 races held this season, at least 2 Ducati riders have finished on the podium.

– In only 4 of the 18 races held this season, no Ducati rider has stepped on the podium. In 17 of the 18 races held this year, at least one Ducati has finished in the top four positions. Only at the Sachsenring, the best Ducati rider was Bagnaia, who finished fifth.

– For the first time in Ducati’s MotoGP history, a Ducati rider from an independent team took victory; Jorge Martín (Pramac Racing Team), winner of the Styrian GP.

– Jorge Martín (Pramac Racing Team) took his first pole position in the second Grand Prix of the 2021 season, in his debut year in MotoGP. At the same Grand Prix, the Spaniard also scored his first podium finish. Thanks to these successes, Jorge was awarded as 2021 Best MotoGP Rookie.

– Martín’s teammate Johann Zarco won the 2021 Best Independent Rider title.

– The Ducati factory-supported team Pramac Racing won the 2021 MotoGP Best Independent Team title.

– Ducati Lenovo Team riders Pecco Bagnaia and Jack Miller achieved their best-ever finish in the 2021 MotoGP World Championship. With 252 points, Bagnaia ended the season as runner-up, 26 points behind title winner Fabio Quartararo. On the other hand, Miller finished the championship in fourth place with 181 points, 97 points behind the leader.

– With four wins in total, at Aragón, Misano, Portimão and Valencia, Bagnaia became the fourth Ducati rider to score the most wins in MotoGP with the Desmosedici GP.

Tomorrow and Friday 19th November, at the Circuit de Jerez – Ángel Nieto, Ducati teams and riders will be back on track to face the first two days of winter testing in preparation for the 2022 MotoGP season.

World Superbike: Sykes Returning To Action In Indonesia

Mandalika debut for finale: BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team ready for the final races of the year in Indonesia.

Season finale of the 2021 FIM Superbike World Championship at the new Mandalika International Street Circuit.

Tom Sykes returns to the BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team for the finale.

Marc Bongers: “We know how enthusiastic the fans in Indonesia are and how passionate they are about motorcycles and our sport”.

Munich. The BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team will be breaking new ground in the FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK) once again at the 2021 season finale. The final races of the year will be held at the new Mandalika International Street Circuit on the Indonesian island of Lombok, a popular holiday destination. The team will field their regular line-up of Tom Sykes (GBR) and Michael van der Mark (NED) once again at the finale. Sykes returns from injury to resume his place in the saddle of the BMW M 1000 RR.

The Superbike World Championship has been held in Indonesia previously between 1994 and 1997. The Sentul International Circuit was the venue in those days. The Mandalika International Street Circuit is a street circuit in the Mandalika resort area of the Lombok island; it is 4.310-kilometres long, with 17 turns. When no races are being held, the track is used as a public road. The paddock and the stands are only set up temporarily for race events.

Quotes ahead of the Mandalika races.

Marc Bongers, BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director: “We’re really looking forward to the races in Indonesia and to lining up on the brand-new Mandalika International Street Circuit. It’s a little bit unusual to be racing at a track where the characteristics are totally unknown but we’re not alone; the whole paddock is in the same position. What we do know is how enthusiastic the fans in Indonesia are and how passionate they are about motorcycles and our sport so we’re guaranteed a great atmosphere for the final. We’re delighted that Tom is back and will do our best to ensure he has a successful final race weekend with the BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team. We’re aiming to finish the 2021 season with more strong results for Tom and Mickey.”

Shaun Muir, Team Principal BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team: “We are pleased to be here in Indonesia and looking forward to see the Mandalika circuit. From everything we have seen from the drone shots and photographs, it looks like an exciting international circuit with a lot of variety and we are looking forward to that. It is brand new for everybody, obviously. Also, we welcome Tom back to the team. It’s a pretty long time since he got injured in Catalunya so we are delighted that Tom can come back and finish the season with the team. The weather forecast, typically in this part of the world, is very changeable. It’s very hot and humid but with a very high chance of rain every day. So we will prepare for every eventuality. Overall, we are looking forward to the season finale and hope we can make it great final races of the season.”

Tom Sykes, BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team: “I’m very much looking forward to getting back on my BMW M 1000 RR. It has been a long time since I last raced and obviously we have a little bit of work to do to catch up. But having said that, I have to say that the excitement of going to a totally new venue is quite something, not only because Indonesia is a great part of the world. Everybody looks to be doing an incredible job on the new circuit of Mandalika. What a unique venue – to say the least. On top of that, it is located on a beautiful island so I am really looking forward to it. It is new for everybody and I have to say that it is going to be a little bit of a way to finish the season, but that’s another story. In general, it’s a great place to finish the season, and hopefully we can finish it with some strong results to end 2021.”

Michael van der Mark, BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team: “It’s fantastic to go to Indonesia. It’s nice to have a new circuit on the calendar, especially in Asia. I love to go there. It’s also incredible that it’s the last round of the season already. I cannot wait to try the Mandalika circuit because it looks really nice from what I have seen. Getting to know a new track is not too difficult; it comes with doing the laps. I think that it will be a great season finale. We had some strong weekends this year and obviously that’s the same way we want to finish the season.”

World Superbike: Rea Says “I Feel All The Pressure Is Off”

Intense Championship Finale Approaches

The 13th and final round of the thrilling 2021 WorldSBK championship will take place at the all-new venue of Mandalika in Indonesia this coming weekend, with Jonathan Rea ready to fight hard in defence of his championship crown. Rea’s KRT team-mate Alex Lowes is out to finish his season on strong form at what will be the inaugural race weekend at the Indonesian circuit, located on the Island of Lombok.

After a closely contested and exciting season in WorldSBK racing Jonathan Rea has recorded 28 podium finishes, including 11 race wins, and is currently second in the championship standings, with only the Indonesian finale left to run.

Having won the six previous WorldSBK championships with Kawasaki Rea now faces the toughest battle of his career to keep the number one plate on his Ninja ZX-10RR for another year. The season has seen the pendulum of fortune swing from Rea to championship leader Toprak Razgatlioglu and back again – hence few expect anything less than late dramas and unpredictable happenings to round off a year like 2021.

Whatever the final outcome of the championship fight it has been widely declared a classic season already, with Rea still having three individual races to try and peg back the lead of Razgatlioglu.

After a tough season due to injury Alex Lowes has undergone recent surgery to speed up his recovery before the final round. With early season shoulder issues to deal with, and then his mid-season hand injury, Lowes has recorded five podiums finishes – even though he has not been able to ride in all of the races.

He aims to finish the season strongly by securing more podium finishes for himself, his KRT squad and Kawasaki.

More than a month after the previous round in Argentina the current season finishes with what is something of a new era for WorldSBK – despite the complications of the ongoing global pandemic.

In between race meetings the fully modern and safety-conscious circuit design will revert to being part of the local road network, making it unique in modern World Championship motorcycle racing.

At 4.310km long Mandalika’s asphalt surface has just recently been completed. An inauguration ceremony has taken place ahead of what will be its first race weekend of any kind, between 19-21 November.

As usual in 2021 here will be three races for the WorldSBK riders to take part in, as WorldSBK returns to Indonesia for the first time since 1997.

Saturday’s Race One is scheduled to take place at 15.00 local time in Lombok. The ten-lap Tissot-Superpole Race will take place at 11.00 local on Sunday 21 November and Race Two at 15.00.

Jonathan Rea, stated: “After a few weeks at home preparing, I’m very excited to go to Mandalika and get the last round of the championship underway. I’m curious to see the circuit for the first time. First impressions from images I’ve found of it are great. It looks like a circuit that will suit the strengths of our ZX10-RR. We will work hard on Friday to learn the circuit and fine tune our settings. We will arrive there 30 points behind in the championship battle but we will fight to the end. I feel all the pressure is off now; I can ride free with nothing to lose and the target is clear. With three points scoring opportunities lying ahead I will give 100% to get the maximum possible.”

Alex Lowes, stated: “It’s the final race of 2021 and it’s been a frustrating year for me. I’m sure my speed with the ZX-10RR has definitely improved but I haven’t been 100% fit at all this season. We made the decision after Argentina to have some surgery, considering the long break we’ve had in the race action. Now the target is to be in better condition and finish the year strongly as we are already building for 2022. Mandalika is a brand new circuit and Indonesia is a country where the fans have a great passion for two wheels. Both of these reasons are why I’m so happy to be going there and I’m excited to get started. It would be great to finish the season on that podium.”

Isaac Vinales (Orelac Racing VerdNatura Kawasaki) is currently 19th in the WorldSBK rankings as the end of his rookie season approaches. Tito Rabat (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) will once again stand-in for the injured Lucas Mahias.

Loris Cresson (TPR Outdo Kawasaki) will not be racing at the final round as he continues to recover from an injury sustained at the Portuguese race weekend in October. Teenager Oliver Konig will make his WorldSBK debut at the final round of the 2021 season. Oliver has raced in the WorldSSP300 class this season, scoring a podium at the Most Round in August.

World Superbike: Razgatlioglu Says He Will “Fight Race By Race”

Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK Heads to Lombok for WorldSBK Title Showdown

Toprak Razgatlıoğlu and Andrea Locatelli head to Indonesia for the final round of the 2021 FIM Superbike World Championship at all-new Mandalika International Circuit in Lombok this week, where three WorldSBK Championship titles will be decided over 19-21 November.

Razgatlıoğlu holds a 30-point lead in a titanic fight for the Riders’ Championship that has seen some of the best racing in WorldSBK’s 33-year history; Yamaha will challenge for its first Manufacturers’ Championship since 2007 (holding a 16-point lead) and Crescent Racing-run Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK will work towards clinching its first ever Teams’ Championship (from a current 58-point lead).

It’s likely that the battle for the “triple crown” between the main protagonists Razgatlıoğlu, Rea, Kawasaki, Ducati and Yamaha will go to the final race of the season on Sunday afternoon – with a maximum of 62 points up for grabs across the two full-length feature races and 10-lap Superpole Race.

Teammate and 25-year-old Italian rider Locatelli has already been awarded “Rookie of the Year” with his outstanding run of performance over the course of the 2021 season so far including an impressive run of top-five consistency and four podiums. For “Loka” the next goal is to close the eight-point gap to fourth place in the Riders’ Championship and help Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK finish on top.

With a new 4.310km circuit to learn in Mandalika, it’s game on for the championship contenders as they aim to hit the ground running in Free Practice 1 on Friday morning at 11:00 (UTC+8) for the first of two 45-minute practice sessions on Friday. All eyes will be on both FP1 and FP2 (15:00) to see how the competition is shaping up ahead of the final points-paying races, set to decide the overall winners of 2021.

Toprak Razgatlıoğlu

“I am happy to be in Indonesia now, it is always interesting to come to a new track. Already I see some photos and videos of the layout and it looks fun to ride. It has been a great season with many big fights, many victories. Now we have three more chances to fight again for the win, and we will work in every session to find the best set-up for the races and always improve. This is my only idea, try to win and enjoy the races. After we will see the final result, but my focus will stay the same – to fight race by race!”

Andrea Locatelli

“Fortunately, it’s time to go back on track after waiting one month from Argentina! Now we have the last chance, the last round, and I’m so happy to try and conclude the season in the best way possible. For sure, it is important to learn the new track immediately and try to push the bike on the limit to finish with more positive results. It’s not easy, as I’ve said before it’s my first year, and every time when I come back to the bike after a big gap I need to spend a bit of time to return the “feeling” so it’s important to get this feeling immediately to try to push. It’s another important weekend for us and also the team, but we are ready to fight and try to close the season well!”
