PIERER MOBILITY AG ACQUIRES FELT BICYCLES AND ENTERS THE NORTH AMERICAN BICYCLE MARKET

PIERER Mobility AG acquires FELT Bicycles and enters the North American bicycle market

As part of its strategy to assume a leading global role in the bicycle sector, PIERER Mobility AG is pleased to announce the acquisition and integration of FELT Bicycles into its division PIERER E-Bikes GmbH.

Founded in 1991 in California, USA, FELT Bicycles has an established reputation for producing high-performance, drop-bar road, triathlon, track, cyclocross, gravel, and adventure bikes. Always striving for innovation, during its 30-year history, FELT Bicycles has pioneered carbon fiber usage in bike design, set new standards in mountain bike suspension systems, and revolutionized aerodynamic development in the pursuit of the ultimate racing equipment. FELT bikes have been ridden to stage wins at Grand Tours, earned record-breaking triathlon world titles, Olympic gold medals, and world championships on various terrain.

Stefan Pierer, CEO PIERER Mobility AG: “The acquisition of FELT Bicycles fits perfectly with the overall strategy of PIERER E-Bikes – that of becoming a global player in the field of two-wheel mobility, with both electric and non-electric bikes, across all cycling categories. With FELT we are able to expand our bicycle portfolio and also strongly enter the North American market with an established, high-performance brand. The company is also heavily involved in competition, which brings an extra attraction for us.”

The acquisition of FELT Bicycles consists of three components: the purchase of the FELT brand assets, business assets in Europe and in North America as well as the integration of the global workforce into PIERER E-Bikes GmbH’s team structure.

PIERER Mobility AG – the group behind vastly successful powered-two-wheeler brands like KTM, Husqvarna Motorcycles and GASGAS – established PIERER E-Bikes GmbH in 2019 with the focus to deliver innovation, advanced technology and leading design into the bicycle market. PIERER E-Bikes GmbH continues building a portfolio of premium bicycle brands, covering all categories, with FELT Bicycles now set to join Husqvarna E-Bicycles, GASGAS, and R Raymon.

In marking its centenary in 2021, Moto Guzzi does not just celebrate a milestone but rather a starting point, a base on which to construct the future. The beginning of a new century in which Moto Guzzi will continue producing magnificent motorcycles, authentic and strong in character.

Oozing with charm and cutting-edge technology, these modern machines will be proudly made in Italy, as always, at the Mandello del Lario factory, which will continue to be the epicenter of Moto Guzzi passion.

The Moto Guzzi headquarters will also benefit from a new look, the result of an ambitious project to reconstruct, expand and develop over the coming years. The factory will be opened to the public, becoming a place in which to meet and share the love for motorcycling. This brand-new industrial vision, based on the concepts of environmental sustainability and the efficient use of resources, will serve to promote a totally unique technical and cultural heritage by carefully balancing tradition and innovation, engineering, and design.

Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello, a First Step Toward 2121

“100” as in the history written during its first century, one of passion, skill, innovation, and success, both sporting and commercial. “100” as in the second century that has just begun. “100” to indicate, as is Moto Guzzi tradition, the displacement of the very modern new engine, the basis for a family of new generation motorcycles that will come to light in the future.

Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello will mark the start of a brand-new chapter in the Moto Guzzi story. A bike that refuses to conform or fit into just one category, it will combine dynamic flair with the travel vocation that lives in the soul of every Moto Guzzi. A never-before-seen Moto Guzzi, one characterized by cutting-edge technology, as the brand paves the way towards the future with innovative technical solutions and aerodynamics.

V100 Mandello will also present an innovative design which, as with all Moto Guzzis, focuses on showcasing the unique and inimitable v-twin engine. Lines that are far from nostalgic and that offer a modern take on the very cornerstones of Moto Guzzi style. This is clear to see in the shapes of the tank, which appear to be molded directly to the muscular engine heads, in the under-seat side panels, the slots of which are a clear reference to the legendary 1976 Le Mans, and in the top fairing, a tribute to the 1981 Le Mans 850 III. A 21st century bike, in its style and technology, that embodies the character and authenticity typical of all Moto Guzzis.

Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello will represent a turning point in the brand’s history, the project introducing some very important technological innovations. It will be the very first motorcycle to offer adaptive aerodynamics, and the first Moto Guzzi to be equipped with advanced electronic solutions such as the six-axis inertial platform, cornering ABS, semi-active suspension, and the quick shifter, to cite just a few of the most important features.

And it will be the first Moto Guzzi to be powered by the new “compact block” engine, with its sophisticated technical characteristics. Tradition is respected with the 90° transverse V architecture of the twin, which guarantees that unique torque delivery and inimitable Moto Guzzi sound, but the project is in fact all new.

An innovative design has allowed for the development of an extremely compact and lightweight engine, which is 103 mm shorter than the V85 TT small block. The new twin stands out from all the engines recently built in Mandello del Lario for its cylinder heads, which are rotated by 90°, a decision that increases on-board comfort and rationalizes the positioning of components in the intake and electronic injection systems.

Its actual displacement equates to 1042cc, while timing involves a double overhead camshaft with finger followers and four valves per cylinder, which are chain driven. It also flaunts a wet sump lubrication system, a liquid cooling system, and a hydraulically controlled wet clutch.

Performance is second to none, with power more than 115 HP and torque of more than 105 Nm, with 90% already available at 3500 rpm and the limiter set at 9500 rpm. Data that effectively showcases the character and power of the new engine, gutsy and with real drive already at low speeds, and able to offer a riding experience worthy of the Moto Guzzi name.

The shaft drive employs a long aluminum single-sided swingarm, now positioned on the left. The drive shaft exit position, much lower with respect to previous Moto Guzzi engines, does away with any suspension reaction owing to the transfer of torque, with no need for linkage on the swingarm. This makes for a smooth ride during both acceleration and release, like that offered by a chain drive, but with the typical advantages of the shaft, so less maintenance and greater cleanliness.

The sports character of V100 Mandello does not just have to do with the performance of the new engine, but also the qualities of a compact and manageable chassis, which offers excitement through the turns and fast sections but also real stability over more long-range trips, with that inimitable front wheel feeling, synonymous with fun and riding pleasure. This is also thanks to the steel tube frame with 1486 mm wheelbase, fruit of a first-rate Moto Guzzi construction culture and ideal for showcasing the bike’s agility.

Its touring attitude is boosted thanks to the significant comfort that the generous saddle and active, relaxed riding position afford. The adoption of a single variable-section aluminum handlebar is in line with the philosophy of the model, perfect for ensuring control during sports riding while also offering a higher and more relaxed riding position when touring. Two-person travel is at the base of the project, the passenger able to count on a significant, well-padded portion of saddle and practical grab handles, with a posture that ensures a relaxing trip. The comprehensive, dedicated accessories catalogue also includes a set of bike cases, which do not require any additional supports for assembly and contain both the side bulk and weight of the bike. Moto Guzzi technology also contributes to increasing both comfort and air protection, with the world-first adoption of an adaptive aerodynamic system that automatically adjusts the position of deflectors on the sides of the 17.5-liter tank depending on the speed and selected Riding Mode. The fully raised aerodynamic appendages reduce air pressure on the rider by 22%, which brings V100 Mandello close to the level of air protection afforded by more voluminous and less sporty tourers, thanks also to the protection provided by the top fairing, the height of which can be electronically adjusted.

This system contributes to what is a first-rate electronics package, comprising the Ride by Wire electronic accelerator for precise performance and consumption control, the advanced Marelli 11MP ECU, the six-axis inertial platform for effective management of the electronic controls, cruise control, and Cornering ABS to ensure active safety when braking through the turns.

Four Riding Modes are available, namely Travel, Sport, Rain and Road. Each of these manages three different engine mappings, four levels of traction control, three levels of engine brake and (in the version that introduces them as standard) also calibration of the Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 semi-active suspension, which can adapt automatically, minute by minute, to suit the type of riding and the road conditions, for the best possible bike behavior in any situation.

As ever, Moto Guzzi technology does not only aim to ensure a safe and exciting ride, but also facilitate life on-board. The rider need only select the Riding Mode that best suits their riding requirements to benefit from the best automatic adjustment of the electronic parameters, which can also be personalized so that every rider can find their preferred settings. Also included as standard is the 5″ color TFT instrumentation, full LED lighting with DRL and the “bending lights” system with a pair of additional lights that illuminate the entire corner, increasing visibility when leaning.

V100 Mandello is available in two versions, which differ in terms of their trim. The more comprehensive version includes Öhlins semi-active suspension as standard, but also the quick shift, heated hand grips, and the Moto Guzzi MIA multimedia platform that allows a smartphone to be connected to the instrumentation via Bluetooth to extend its functions. Moto Guzzi MIA includes both the infotainment system for management of the voice assistant, phone calls and music via the intuitive handlebar controls, and the GPS function, which allows the rider to view directions directly on the instrument panel once a destination is set on the smartphone.

SportbikeTrackGear.com Expands MotoAmerica Junior Cup Team

Max Van and the SportbikeTrackGear.com Racing Team partner with Joseph LiMandri Jr. and the Bauce Racing/CyberSafe Solutions/JL62 Team

SportbikeTrackGear.com Racing is proud to introduce its two-rider team of Max Van and Joseph LiMandri Jr. competing in the SportbikeTrackGear.com Junior Cup Series for the 2022 season.

Both riders competed in the SportbikeTrackGear.com MotoAmerica Junior Cup Series in 2021. Max Van raced all nine rounds with a best finish of 4th and ended the season 7th in the championship. Being a relatively new racer (18 total race rounds in his short career by season’s end) Max’s performance exceeded all expectations. Joe LiMandri Jr. finished in the top 10 for the year, with three podium finishes in just 10 attempts (competed in 5 of the 9 rounds). Joe was stoked to finish on the podium three times but remains hungry for his first win.

Brian Van, Owner STG: “It is through the support of our STG Customers Max was able to race the 2021 STG MotoAmerica Junior Cup Series. This same support is what allows us to expand our team and help Joe LiMandri Jr. compete in the full 2022 series alongside Max. Each of these young men have tremendous potential both on and off the track.”

“For 2022, Jimmy Fox, Dave Bavol, Marcine Van, and myself will return to support Max. We had a ton of fun with the JL62 crew last year and welcome them under our canopy for the upcoming season. With our teams working together Max and Joe will be battling for the top step of the podium.”

Joseph LiMandri, Owner JL62 Racing: “This new partnership will allow Joe LiMandri Jr. to compete for the championship by attending every round. It’s just awesome. I can’t thank Brian Van (owner of SportbikeTrackGear.com) enough for giving me the opportunity. We’ve shown what we can do in the few rounds we attended in the past, so we are super hungry for more.”

The deal came about when the two teams were pitted next to each other during a couple of rounds in 2021.

“You know, we start talking, we’re watching how each team works, the kids get along great together, and before you know it, Brian just asks ‘What’s it going to take to have you in the paddock all next year?'” Joseph LiMandri Sr. said.

The father-son team have been doing all they can with a relatively small budget and lots of local support for the past three seasons at the national level.

“We get a ton of support from Anthony Corbo, Pablo Villavicencio, and Ura Torres from Bauce Racing on and off the track, and they’ll still be our crew for 2022,” along with continued support from Ben Filingeri, CEO of CyberSafe Solutions, Joseph added.  “But the Sportbiketrackgear.com sponsorship is going to help fill the gaps that prevented us from making the more distant rounds last season, and we’re incredibly grateful.”

Look for the two teens on the MotoAmerica grid in 2022.

Kawasaki was the last of the big four Japanese manufacturers to enter World Championship Grand Prix Road Racing. For the 1965 Japanese GP, Kawasaki entered three 125cc rotary valve, twin-cylinder, air-cooled two-stroke racebikes, designated KA-1s. Not surprisingly, the machines were hopelessly outclassed by the competition.

Determined to succeed, a new water-cooled version with an eight-speed gearbox was designed and developed for the 1966 season. Former Suzuki rider Toshio Fujii was contracted for the 1966 GP season. Fujii showed promise at his debut GP in Germany, running sixth until retiring. A fatal crash while practicing for the lightweight TT in the Isle of Man led Kawasaki to withdraw from competition until the final round in Japan.

Kawasaki entered three bikes to be ridden by Aroaka, Ernst Degner, and Dave Simmonds. When Degner crashed in practice, Chris Vincent took over his ride. All three finished in the top 10!

MotoGP: World Championship Will Continue Racing At Catalunya

MotoGP™ renews agreement with Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya until 2026

The emblematic venue will host MotoGP™ in 2022, with least two more events confirmed between 2023 and 2026

Friday, 26 November 2021

Dorna Sports is happy to announce a new contract with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, extending the partnership between the FIM MotoGP™ World Championship and the classic Catalonia venue for another five years. The new agreement guarantees the Gran Premi de Catalunya a place on the 2022 calendar and confirms a minimum of two more events to be held between 2023 and 2026.

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has been part of the FIM MotoGP™ World Championship calendar since 1992; first as the host of the European Grand Prix (from 1992-1995) and later the Catalan Grand Prix (from 1996). The event is a fan and rider favourite, bringing the world’s fastest motorcycle racing Championship to the vibrant Mediterranean city of Barcelona.

The provisional dates for the 2022 Catalan GP are the 3rd to the 5th of June. From 2023, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will then alternate with other venues on the Iberian peninsula, with a minimum of two more Grands Prix at the venue confirmed to take place between 2023 and 2026.

Roger Torrent, Catalan Minister of Business and Labour, and Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya President: “We are very pleased to continue hosting the most important competition in the world of motorcycling. This is great news for the fans of our country, for the international projection of Barcelona and Catalonia, and for the objective of turning the circuit into a strategic piece for the economic and social development linked to the green mobility industry.”

Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports: “This contract renewal with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for five more seasons is, without a doubt, fantastic news for MotoGP.

“The spectacular Catalan track has been linked to MotoGP since the first beginnings of Dorna and has been a key fixture on the calendar each season. This important agreement extending the collaboration until 2026 demonstrates, once again, the commitment shown to our Championship by the promoter.”

MotoGP: KTM Race Manager Leitner Stepping Down

KTM FACTORY RACING EXPRESSES SINCERE THANKS TO MIKE LEITNER FOR PIVOTAL MOTOGP™ MANAGEMENT ROLE

KTM Factory Racing wish to extend their gratitude to Mike Leitner for his application and knowledge towards their MotoGP program as the Austrian steps down from his position as Red Bull KTM Race Manager.

2022 will represent KTM’s sixth season as part of the MotoGP grid and the KTM Factory Racing hierarchy will restructure. The 59-year-old will no longer fill his management role as principal of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing set-up and will transition into a consultancy post.

Leitner originally came into the KTM Race Department and helped construct the testing squad that began work on the KTM RC16 in 2015 and then the official Red Bull KTM MotoGP team that first took to the grid at the end of 2016 in Valencia.

Since 2017 he has been an important part of the KTM MotoGP race management and organisation that has produced five victories and 13 trophies in less than half a decade of Grand Prix competition. He was instrumental in delivering the company’s first podium as rider Pol Espargaro classified 3rd at the 2018 Gran Premio de la Comunitat Valenciana. By 2020 he oversaw KTM’s maiden victory, scored by Brad Binder in the Czech Republic as well as further spoils by the South African in 2021 and the three triumphs marked by Miguel Oliveira in Austria, Portugal and Catalunya in the last two seasons.

Further milestones include Espargaro’s 5th place finish in the 2020 rider’s standings while Binder ranked 6th by the end of the recent 2021 campaign.

Pit Beirer, KTM Motorsports Director: “Mike has been a key figure in our mission to fight against the best in the world of road racing. Together we created a MotoGP structure with the right staff and the right riders which achieved outstanding results at the pinnacle of the sport. We started building our RC16 and the whole plan from a blank piece of paper and under his guidance we put a great team together; one that took on the challenge of MotoGP. Now, after seven years together, we decided to reorganize our MotoGP leadership for the future, and I cannot express how much we want to thank him for all the work he put into this project. Mike pushed very hard to get us from the back of the grid to the front row and his dedication has played a major part in our success story.”

November 2021 Issue

Featured In the November 2021 issue of Roadracing World:
