MotoAmerica: Gagne, Petersen Test Yamaha Superbikes At Buttonwillow

Defending MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Jake Gagne and his new teammate Cameron Petersen tested on Fresh ‘N’ Lean Attack Performance Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbikes Monday and Tuesday, January 17-18, at Buttonwillow Raceway Park, in Buttonwillow, California.

Weather conditions for the test were good with temperatures in the mid-60s Fahrenheit and no wind.

Gagne, who won his Championship with Fresh ‘N’ Lean Attack Performance Yamaha in 2021, has apparently re-signed with the outfit. Petersen, who finished third in the 2021 MotoAmerica Superbike Championship on an M4 ECSTAR Suzuki GSX-R1000, is new to the official Yamaha team.

Fresh ‘N’ Lean Attack Performance Yamaha Team Owner Richard Stanboli politely declined to speak to Roadracingworld.com about the test, the re-signing of Gagne, or the signing of his new rider because Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A. has not yet made its official announcement about the team’s 2022 plans.

Gagne and Petersen also did not feel comfortable speaking to the media ahead of an official announcement from Yamaha.

Attempts to reach Yamaha Racing Department Manager Jim Roach prior to post time were unsuccessful.

Also attending the test was Mathew Scholtz on his Westby Racing Yamaha YZF-R1.

“It’s nice to come out here and test,” Scholtz told Roadracingworld.com. “Normally in January I’m sitting at home and doing nothing. Plus, it’s nice to be out here riding with the Attack boys to compare ourselves. And the weather is certainly nice. Back in Georgia, it’s 30-something (F) and freezing rain.”

Asked what he was working on, Scholtz said, “Right now it’s mainly seat time. We have some new parts coming for this season, but for now it’s just seat time. That was one of our biggest problems heading into the 2021 season because I missed a bunch of pre-testing due the injury I got at Indianapolis. So, our big focus this year is to get a decent amount of pre-season testing so we don’t feel like we’re always chasing our tail and trying to catch up to these guys.”

WERA Cancels Jan. 23 Event At Auto Club Speedway

WERA Motorcycle Roadracing Inc. has been forced to cancel its Lucas Oil WERA West Sportsman Series race event scheduled January 23 at Auto Club Speedway, in Fontana, California, due to the organization’s leaders contracting COVID-19.

WERA CEO Evelyne Clarke told Roadracingworld.com that she has been suffering symptoms of a breakthrough case of COVID-19, and just as she started to feel a little bit better, her husband and Operations Manager Sean Clarke caught COVID-19.

This obviously left them unable to travel from their base in Georgia to California, and without anyone else available to run their timing and scoring computer system, WERA was forced to cancel the event.

Evelyne Clarke said she was “devastated” to have to cancel.

The Fastrack Riders track days and coaching days scheduled January 21-22 at Auto Club Speedway will go on as planned.

R.I.P. AMA Hall Of Famer Preston Petty

AMA Hall of Famer and Motorcycle Pioneer Preston Petty Passes

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame offers its condolences to the family, friends and fans of Preston Petty, a leading off-road and motocross racer of the late 1950s through the early 1970s and the owner of Petty Plastics, a ground-breaking plastic motorcycle component business that changed the face of motorcycle racing. Petty passed away on Jan. 16. He was 81.

Petty was born in Los Angeles on Feb. 19, 1941. He was raised in an affluent and strict Mormon family. His father, a successful attorney, tried to keep the young Petty off motorcycles.

Growing up on a hilltop in the Santa Monica Mountains, Petty was already one of the top scrambles and off-road racers in Southern California by the time he was 16. He became known as a thinking-man’s racer and was uniquely skilled at reading terrain and knowing how to get the most out of his bikes. He earned a solid reputation for winning a lot of races on smaller-displacement machines, against the more popular big bikes of the day.

To try to dissuade him from motorcycle racing, Petty’s father sent him to Brigham Young University where the required Sunday church service did not mix with a racing schedule. After leaving BYU and returning to Los Angeles, Petty went headlong into racing. He was one of the first to race Hondas before they had an American footprint and then became the first rider the company backed after they opened a U.S. headquarters

In the early 1960s, Petty began racing novice and amateur flat track events and won numerous races at Ascot Park, a highly competitive and legendary racetrack.

With his reputation as a top-notch racer, Petty went on to race on the American team for ISDT competition in 1969, 1970 and 1971. He earned a Silver Medal in 1969 but was plagued by mechanical problems in other outings.

It was during one of these European trips that Petty introduced his newly invented plastic fenders. Months later, Petty got a call from British custom motocross builder Eric Cheney raving about the durability and popularity of the fender. With Cheney’s endorsement, the fenders became huge sellers in Europe and soon after in America as well.

The idea for the fender came after a ride where the aluminum front fender of Petty’s Maico racer broke off and he drew inspiration from a five-gallon bucket of paint. Utilizing his programming skills in computer machining to fashion a mold, he eventually came up with the optimal plastic formula for fenders.

In 1972, Petty opened a factory in Oregon and expanded his line of products. During this period, he scaled back his racing efforts to concentrate on his growing business.

Business unfortunately took a turn for the worse, as Petty lost it all after the sale of his company on a long-term payout basis flopped when the group that purchased the rights to Petty Plastics went bankrupt in 1980.

Petty was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999. He will always be remembered for his rare combination of racing skill and technical innovation that helped revolutionize off-road motorcycling.

MotoGP: Marc Marquez Has Rewarding Test In Portugal (With Video)

Marc Marquez completes positive track test in Portimao

Days after returning to motorcycling riding on the motocross track, Marc Marquez’s recovery took another step forward with a full day of riding the Honda RC213V-S in Portugal.

For the first time since winning the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on October 24, 2021, Marc Marquez was back on a closed race circuit as he continued to assess the development and improvement of his diplopia. Completing a total of 65 laps over the course of the day, Marquez and his team were able to further evaluate his current condition in the lead up to the 2022 MotoGP World Championship.

The eight-time World Champion was first and foremost overjoyed to experience the thrill of riding again after his forced break. Marquez reported no major concerns with his diplopia during the day and was left pleased and optimistic with the day’s work. Attention now turns to the first pre-season test at the Sepang International Circuit in early February, Marquez working to be fit and ready to return to his Repsol Honda Team RC213V.

Marc Marquez

“I am feeling very happy, first to be back on a bike at the track and also because we were able to confirm the sensations I had on a motocross bike here with the road bike. It’s a great feeling, a feeling of relief because when I was riding, I didn’t have any discomfort with my vision. Since I haven’t ridden in so long, I did notice some physical areas where I’m missing a little bit but this is just because I have not been able to have my usual pre-season. There’s a margin to improve but the positive and the fundamental take away from this test was to reconfirm the feeling we had when we first got on the motocross bike and to enjoy the good feeling of speed. I have completed an intense day of riding with long runs, I am very happy with the results. We have two weeks until testing begins in Sepang so I will take the opportunity to intensify my physical preparation and train on the bike.”

MotoGP: Team Gresini Racing Officially Introduced In Italy

2022 STARTS NOW: HERE IS TEAM GRESINI RACING MOTOGP

Faenza (Italy), 15 January 2022. Team Gresini Racing MotoGP was presented via streaming worldwide today; the team, which was founded and ‘raised’ by Fausto Gresini, returns to the premier class of MotoGP as an independent team after seven years of absence in this role.

This project is led by team owner Nadia Padovani Gresini and supported by Gresini Racing’s core; this season will witness the return with the family of Enea Bastianini, who already stepped on the podium last year with Ducati, as he joins fellow Italian and MotoGP rookie Fabio Di Giannantonio.

Both riders will race aboard the Ducati Desmosedici GP21 in 2022, a bike they were able to get a glimpse of last November at Jerez de la Frontera. Bastianini has already proved he can be extremely competitive with his new bike, while Di Giannantonio has shown great signs for the upcoming debut season.

The rider #49 will be the first to take to the track in Sepang’s first test, which is reserved exclusively to the MotoGP rookies. On-track action will get underway on January 31st with a three-day ‘shakedown’ where the light blue-liveried team will be already among the protagonists.

ENEA BASTIANINI #23

“The new colours of the bike are very particular, when I saw it first it appears a little strange to me, but now that I see it live I can say it is amazing. Such a great bike can’t be but fast!  In about twenty days we’ll be leaving for the tests, luckily it is just a short time because I’m way too excited to be back on my Ducati. I already met the team during the first test: we had the chance to know each other better and to work together, and I can firmly say that I have a super team. I think it is going to be a very interesting season, I’m sure we’ll achieve great results. I can’t wait for the season to begin!”

FABIO DI GIANNANTONIO #49

“2022 is just around the corner. It will be my first season in MotoGP and it will be so cool! I will have a lot to learn, my expectation is to grow race by race and who knows, we’ll may be able to collect even some great achievements. In a bit we’ll be back on track for the test, we’re going in Malaysia and Indonesia is following. I can’t wait to ride again this beautiful beast. The winter break is always too long, I’m counting the days, the hours! And the bike is spectacular, maybe the most beautiful I’ve ever ride, the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. With that unique main color it looks like a bike of the 70’s, retrò style, on track we’ll be recognizable for sure. Particular, original, BEAUTIFUL. A unique emotion”.

NADIA PADOVANI GRESINI

“We’re finally presenting a project we strongly believed in and one we have been working non-stop for during the last year. We’re very motivated and we ended up being the first MotoGP team to present itself; plus, I believe our bikes are beautiful – and I hope all the others will like them, too. I would like to think Fausto is looking at us from above and that is proud of his family. There is almost no distinction between natural and work families, we’re one. I must say that I saw both Diggia and Enea in great shape and eager to start: we’re aiming at being among the protagonists and show up at the parc fermé sometimes.”
