Mi Scusi SDK takes the Middleweight Championship Title with a win at the WERA/N2 Endurance Challenge at Barber Motorsports Park 

Mi Scusi SDK capped off a stellar WERA/N2 Endurance season at Barber Motorsports Park with a middleweight win to clinch the overall Middleweight Class Championship for 2020.  The win also clinched third place overall in the WERA/N2 Endurance series.

Mi Scusi leadoff rider, Sloan West, wheelied past the rest of the field from the second row to take the hole shot towards turn one.  West got Mi Scusi to 4th place overall behind the 1000s and 1st place overall amongst the 600s.

Additional riders Chris Kubricky, Thomas McQuigg and John Hvizdak followed the team motto of “stay on the &%*$-ing motorcycle” and maintained the lead for the remainder of the race.  After completing a successful anchor leg, John Hvizdak noted “the things we do for cheesecake.”

Mi Scusi SDK was established in 2017 by a bunch of friends that just wanted another excuse to hang out, ride motorcycles, and eat cheesecake. Since the first event completed on a back-up motorcycle after blowing a motor in our A-bike, the team has had up and down seasons in 2017, 2018 and 2019 marked by podiums but also some challenges. Despite the unpredictability, 2020 turned into a turning point with a first visit to the top step, 3 total wins, 5 total podiums in 5 races and, at last, an Endurance Championship. Mi Scusi is already re-tooling, re-fueling, and planning for even better things in the 2021 Endurance Championship.

Mi Scusi SDK would like to thank WERA and N2 for putting on a fantastic series, Metric Devil Moto for providing the Pirelli tires, corner workers, fellow competitors, TDJU, and our 2008 Yamaha R6 for still running despite unimaginable abuses to include being on fire at least once, though not this year.

Army Of Darkness Wins WERA/N2 National Endurance Championship At Barber Motorsports Park

Chris Peris and Ben Walters presented a master class of championship strategy at the season finale of the WERA/N2 National Endurance series.  Entering the race with a significant points lead accumulated over the previous four hard fought rounds, the championship was the team’s to lose.

Walters: “We knew the only way we could lose this championship would be for us to drop out of the race and lose mileage points.  We decided early on to secure the championship, and then push for the win once that was in the bag.”

Deploying that strategy saw Peris tailing the nearest competitor’s bike by half a second for the first hour.  “Taylor Knapp is a terrific rider with a fun style and our bikes work in very different ways so it was really fun to stay with him and play with different lines.”

Going into the last hour AOD had secured their 15th championship and were in second place trailing by about 50 seconds so they mounted a last hour charge in an attempt to retake the lead.  It looked possible as AOD was closing down the lead by 2 to 3 seconds a lap but an unscheduled pit stop to address a part failure convinced the team to settle for the second place.

Of course, the fifteenth championship is never as satisfying at the first championship but Walters reflected “What makes every championship satisfying? Sam, Chris, me and the whole AOD crew won our first championship together in 2005. Here we are 15 years later and multiple championships but one thing never changes: to win these races is incredibly hard.  There are always fast teams, well prepped motorcycles but there are thousands of points of failure: chains break, motors fail, oil leaks, flat tires, master cylinders get stuck, coolant leaks, transmission failures, running on wet tracks on slicks…the list goes on!  We are so fortunate to have such a deeply experienced and dedicated team and we really try to work together to accomplish what we can.  Sometimes we are psyched just to put together a hard fought recovery to third place, sometimes its a win, sometimes its a championship.  What makes endurance so difficult is also what makes it so compelling.”
