SIGLIN TAKES THE POINTS LEAD IN FORMULA PACIFIC, CATCHING’S WIN STREAK CONTINUES

Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, CA, played host to the RaceFuelz/CT Racing Pirelli/Mach 1/Yamaha AFM Series on July 19 and 20th. The temperatures mercifully dropped to just below 100 F after a week long heat spell and the wind picked up from the East to blow across the long front straightaway.

Open Superbike again served as a preview of the Premier class Formula Pacific. Ricky Corey once again got the hole shot on his Dunlop shod RCR Yamaha YZF-R1 with Chris Siglin in a close second on his Fastline Performance BMW on Pirellis. Lenny Hale then slid his GSX-R1000 by both riders on the outside of Turn 2 and broke away from the pack. Hale had already put ten bikelengths between himself and Corey when he had a highside coming out of Turn 11. With Hale out of the Race, Corey retook the lead and Siglin did his best shadow impression as he rode right on the rear wheel of Corey’s Yamaha lap after lap, popping out of the draft on the front straight the first few times, appearing to test his bike’s power if it came down to a front straight drag race. Behind them, Jason Lauritzen settled his RitzRacing/Roseville Yamaha-Kawasaki ZX10 in for third place while behind him, Martin Swarc worked his way up from several places back on his Kawasaki ZX10 and started to whittle away Lauritzen’s lead. With one lap to go, Siglin made his move on the front straight away and decided to lead from the front and attempt to pull away from Corey. The two riders dropped into the 1:48’s while they pushed each other and when the riders popped onto the front straightaway for the last time, Siglin got a perfect drive from the last two corners and was able to hold off Corey. Lauritzen took the final spot on the podium with Swarc right on his tail.

With Siglin exposing a small chink in Corey’s armor, the crowd eagerly gathered to see how Formula Pacific would play out. Hale got his bike put back together and joined Corey, Siglin and multiple class champion Michael Earnest on the front row. Corey and Hale were both on Dunlops while Siglin and Earnest were on Pirellis. The green flag dropped and the front row immediately started trading spots, with Corey leading Hale, Earnest and Siglin in that order. Siglin knew he had to apply pressure on Corey as soon as possible and fought his way around first Earnest and then Hale and the final corner. He was able to make up the distance to Corey on the next lap and again settled in right behind Corey’s rear wheel while Hale and Earnest all stayed close behind. Siglin looked as though he would try to repeat his performance from earlier in the day when Corey made a rare mistake coming out of Turn 1 on lap 5 that sent he and his bike into the dirt. When the dust settled, Corey was sitting on the sideline and Siglin was breaking away at the front, Just behind the pack at the front, Swarc was applying lessons he had learned earlier in the day and put pressure on Lauritzen. Swarc made a pass with two laps to go, putting him in forth place. The order would not change for the rest of the race and Siglin took his first Formula Pacific victory of the year and the overall points lead, with Hale and Earnest take the second and third spots, respectively.

Deion Campbell and Devon McDonough traded top spots on the podiums race after race until both riders came together in turn 2 several laps into the Keigwin’s at the Track 600 Race. With what proved to be a battle of attrition as five of the top ten riders hit the dirt, Cameron Gish took the win in his return to the AFM.

Jason Catching again won every race he entered and extended his win streak to 15 in a row, taking Formula 4, 650 Twins and 650 production.
