It’s been more than half a century since Kawasaki built its first 650cc-class Parallel Twin, the W1. That machine was inspired by a British-built BSA that another motorcycle manufacturer had licensed for production in Japan. But the design had evolved, and when the W1 came out, it was the largest displacement Japanese motorcycle to date, and the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan still refers to that machine as one of the landmarks in the development of Japanese motor vehicle technology.

Therefore, the 2020 version of the Ninja 650 has a lineage, with lines for the Parallel Twin engine configuration that run deep into the roots of Kawasaki’s motorcycling endeavors. And while a 650cc Twin is no longer considered a “big” bike, the Ninja is still evolving the formula, with new technology and styling designed to keep the machine relevant into the next decade…
