MotoAmerica Superstock 600 racer Michael Gilbert crashed twice Saturday at Road America.

In Supersport/Superstock 600 qualifying Saturday morning, Gilbert crashed trying to avoid another rider in Turn Five and suffered a glancing blow off a concrete wall.

The 20-year-old Californian was relatively uninjured in that incident and, after extensive repairs to his Team MG55 Yamaha YZF-R6, he lined up to start Supersport/Superstock 600 Race One Saturday afternoon.

Then on the first lap of that race, Gilbert crashed hard at the exit of Turn Five and was knocked unconscious, causing a red flag. Gilbert was transported to a local hospital and diagnosed with a concussion, a collapsed lung, bruising to his back, but no broken bones.

Gilbert was released from the hospital Saturday night and returned to the track Sunday morning, but he said he will not be racing Sunday.

“It sucks because this hasn’t been my best track,” said Gilbert, “but yesterday I lapped faster than the race winner did last year.”

Gilbert said that due to his collapsed lung he is not able to fly home and is instead planning to drive back to California with a quick pit stop to drop off his trailer at Utah Motorsports Campus (UMC) along the way.

Gilbert is hoping to return to action at the next round, June 23-25 at UMC.
