Cameron Beaubier posted the fastest time in MotoAmerica Motul Superbike/Bazzaz Superstock 1000 Qualifying Practice Two Friday afternoon at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to lead the field into Superpole on Saturday.
Riding his Monster Energy/Yamalube Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike on Dunlop control tires, the two-time and defending MotoAmerica Superbike Champion lapped the 2.2-mile course in 1:24.919.
“Overall, it was a good day,” Beaubier told Roadracingworld.com. “I was P2 in the morning session and P1 in the afternoon, so I’m feeling pretty good and the bike is feeling pretty good. I’m happy, but we definitely have some things to try in the morning session. I’m hoping we can find some more rear grip, but this is a good start to the weekend. It’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve been the quickest on Friday, so this feels good.”
Beaubier’s teammate Josh Hayes and Yoshimura Suzuki’s Toni Elias both recorded identical lap times of 1:25.016.
Elias’ teammate Roger Hayden improved the most of the factory riders on the day, lowering his best time from 1:25.611 in the morning to a 1:25.141 in the afternoon on his GSX-R1000.
M4 ECSTAR Suzuki’s Jake Lewis was fifth overall and the fastest Superstock 1000 rider in QP2, but Yamalube/Westby Racing’s Mathew Scholtz and the 1:25.467 he did in the morning session was the best time on the day in the Superstock 1000 class.
Fifth-fastest overall on combined qualifying times was Josh Herrin, who did a 1:25.184 on his HelmetSounds.com/Western Services/Meen Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike.
Scholtz was sixth in combined times, followed by Lewis, who was unofficially seventh overall Friday.
Eighth overall and third among Superstock 1000 riders was Bobby Fong with a 1:25.657 in the afternoon session on his Quicksilver Latus Motors Racing Kawasaki ZX-10R.
Danny Eslick was quick in both sessions and ended up ninth overall with a lap at 1:25.789 on his TOBC Racing Yamaha YZF-R1.
Kyle Wyman took a step backwards on his Motovation USA/Lucas Oil/KWR Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike in Qualifying Practice Two, but the 1:25.901 he did Friday morning safely got him through to Superpole.
Similarly, Herrin’s teammate Bryce Prince made it through to Superpole based on the 1:25.914 he did in the morning session because he crashed his Yamaha YZF-R1 Superstock 1000 racebike twice during QP2.
The 12th and last spot in Superpole went to comeback kid Sylvain Barrier, who shook off the effects of a crash in QP1 and did a 1:26.434 on his Brixx Performance BMW S1000RR Superbike in QP2.
