After eight of 20 2019 races, Yoshimura Suzuki’s
Josh Herrin was fifth in the MotoAmerica Superbike point standings with two
race wins. But in terms of social media outreach, Herrin was way out in front
with 142,000 followers on Instagram, more than double the number of any other
MotoAmerica Superbike racer!

At age 29, Herrin has been surrounded by mobile
phones and social media throughout his 13-year professional racing career, but
when photo-based Instagram came he really embraced this new way of connecting
with fans.

“There was Twitter back then, but it really wasn’t that
strong for us,” said Herrin. “Tommy Aquino and I were using Twitter back then
and it was huge for us when we had a couple of thousand followers on Twitter. I
also did Facebook then, but it was more just for personal use. Nothing really
made me think the way I do now before Instagram.

“I didn’t start thinking of it as a business until I
came back from Moto2 to MotoAmerica,” said Herrin. “I didn’t have a ride. There
weren’t seats available. I got the ride with Meen Motorsports, and they needed
help attracting sponsors. They told me they would give me a cut of every sponsorship I could bring in.

“That was something new for me. I had always been
on a factory team. So that got my brain working in a different way. How can I
get sponsors?'”
