CVMA KICKS OFF ROUND 1 OF ITS 2017/2018 WINTER SERIES
New tire vendors, new track facilities, and new race winners mark the beginning of a new season of racing in Desert Center, CA. This past weekend, September 23-24, 2017, Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association (CVMA) waved the green flag on its new season of racing in Desert Center, CA. The club is moving into fall with a new host of tire vendors, expanded paddock facilities, and many fresh faces on the starting grid.
Racers now have access to all four major tire brands during race weekends, with Racer’s Edge handling Dunlop distribution, CT Racing dishing up Pirellis, Absolute Michelin serving Michelin rubber, and Motion Moto selling Bridgestone tires.
Additionally, Chuckwalla Valley Raceway recently underwent renovations that doubled the paddock size, adding garages as well as the “CVR Village,” a settlement of cabins that are available for nightly rentals.
On track, many racers displayed freshly applied white expert plates, while many new amateurs joined the ranks to fill the yellow-plate grids. One newly promoted racer, 15-year- old Seth Hauer, celebrated his first weekend as an expert with three wins on his Yamaha YZF-R3. “It was extremely intense from the start,” says Hauer, “and it was a huge relief when I crossed the finish line in first.”
There was no anxiety in Sunday’s premier race, the 10-lap CVMA Shootout sponsored by SoCal Track Days and TrackDaz. The front of the grid was an all-star cast of seasoned racers, all of whom where throwing down impressive lap times. Steve Rapp, who on Saturday hurried back to Los Angeles in his Cirrus SR22 aircraft to pick up a replacement clutch pack for his Aprilia RSV4, won the race and lowered the class record by 0.7 seconds with a 1.46.78 lap. Rapp had been stocking race leader David Anthony for nine laps, and as Rapp was closing in on the final lap Anthony crashed out of the bowl, handing Rapp the win. Benny Solis, CVMA’s current #1 plate holder, secured second place on his Honda CBR600RR while Andrew Lee came in third on his Kawasaki ZX-10R. Lee’s third-place was one of several earned by the young MotoAmerica racer from back-of-the-grid starts, while Anthony, who came up short on luck in The Shootout, secured the tops spot in three other classes on his Kawasaki ZX-10R.
There was deep grids and great racing in the amateur middleweight and open classes, with newcomers Jack Bakken and Kon Shuyeninov battling hard in the Amateur Formula Middleweight class. Bakken cruised into first place on Saturday on his Kawasaki ZX-6R while Shuyeninov struggled to work his way to the front after a bad start, while on Saturday Shuyeninov rocketed his Yamaha YZF-R6 into first midway through the race and held off Bakken to take the win. In Saturday’s Amateur SuperSport Middleweight class the two riders faced off again, and Bakken finished ahead of Shuyeninov by just 0.1 seconds.
Racing resumes at Chuckwalla on October 28-29. October often offers the best weather of the season, as well as an excuse to throw an excellent Halloween party in the paddock. So whether you’re a racer or a race fan, Desert Center is the place to be. CVMA offers two full days of racing every race weekend and also includes Saturday qualifying for grid position in all classes, amateur and expert, as well as a wide variety of classes to choose from.
