This Winter: Come race in California with CVMA
Winter can be painful for many road racers. Freezing temperatures and snow force most racing organizations into hibernation. Northern and Midwest racers are compelled to spend the season watching old racing videos, tinkering with their motors and polishing bodywork. There is hope! If the itch for that adrenaline rush that can only be found during wheel to wheel racing becomes overwhelming, they can head south, like snowbirds, to the California desert and satisfy their urge.
Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association, the home motorcycle race club of Chuckwalla Valley Raceway, located in the desert of Southern California, hosts a 7 round series. What CVMA affectionately calls its “Winter Series”, starts in September and concludes in April (skipping only the holidays in December).
“Every year we get racers from the snow-ridden colder climates coming to Chuckwalla to get their racing fix – Pennsylvania, Colorado, Indiana, New York and even our friends from EMRA, located in Canada, to name a few,” said Aimee Grana, head registrar of the series. “We know it is a big undertaking to get out here. This year we thought we’d offer free reciprocity to anyone and everyone – if you have a license with a racing organization from anywhere, we’ll let you race – no extra licensing fees.”
“We’ve had riders conveniently organize a family vacation to California around a race weekend; theme park during the week and racetrack on the weekend. Others have come out for a round, stored their bike, then flown back for a second or third round,” added Dustin Coyner, CVMA Rider Representative. “Racers have flown to SoCal and either shipped their bikes out or rented bikes. Some rent cars to get to the track. Others have posted up to the CVMA community to coordinate getting from airports to the track.”
“Our current Number 1 plate holder is from Colorado. He and his crew came out for a race and decided to stay for a season,” offered Grana.
