Garrett Gerloff Says Knee Injury Will Not Prevent Him From Trying To Ride At VIR

The knee injury MotoAmerica Supersport Championship point leader Garrett Gerloff suffered at New Jersey Motorsports Park will not prevent him from trying to ride this coming weekend at VIRginia International Raceway.

Gerloff crashed his Y.E.S./Graves Yamaha YZF-R6 in oil while leading Supersport/Superstock 600 Race Two in the wet May 1 at New Jersey Motorsports Park, and the 20-year-old was hit in the left leg by the motorcycle of another rider who crashed in the oil behind him. Gerloff limped away from the scene and sought medical attention locally, but he didn’t learn the full extent of his injury until he saw his personal doctors last week near his home in Texas.

“I have a tear in my MCL [Medial Collateral Ligament], like a Grade One/Grade Two tear, and I also have a Grade One/Grade Two tear in my popliteus tendon,” Gerloff told Roadracingworld.com Monday. “I was told that it will heal on its own. I just have to wear a knee brace pretty much all the time except for when I’m racing, because it won’t fit inside my leathers. Other than that, it hurts pretty good, but it feels a ton better than it did at the track. It keeps feeling better every day. I’m just trying to take it easy and let it heal up. It should be good for VIR.”

While it’s never easy to ride injured, Gerloff said it could be worse.

“I got pretty lucky, for sure, after seeing what happened on video,” he said. “I think VIR is going to be pretty demanding. There’s a lot of switchbacks and you use your legs a lot through those, but there’s more rights than lefts and that will help me. I think once I get my adrenaline going I’ll be all good.”
