​Report: Corner Worker Killed During Motorcycle Road Race At Road Atlanta (Updated Again)

Hazel Harrell, 60, was killed Saturday, June 3 when she was struck by a motorcycle during the WERA Cycle Jam at Road Atlanta, according to WSB-TV in Atlanta.

Harrell was well known throughout motorcycle road racing circles as a regular worker at Road Atlanta’s Turn Seven. WSB-TV reports that she had served as a corner worker at the track for 15 years.

Roadracingworld.com has made inquiries about the incident with WERA Motorcycle Roadracing, Inc. and Road Atlanta, but as of post time, those inquiries had not been answered.

Update: An official statement issued by Road Atlanta: “We at Road Atlanta are devastated to confirm the passing of one of our own, Hazel Harrell, this weekend. A member of the Road Atlanta family for nearly two decades, we will miss her sorely. Our deepest condolences go out to her family and friends and the entire racing community that knew and loved her.” -Geoff Lee, president and general manager of Road Atlanta.

Second Update: A statement from WERA Motorcycle Roadracing Inc. CEO/President Evelyne Clarke: “Yesterday we lost Hazel Harrell, a woman who has worked Turn Seven for many, many years. She helped us staff the Corner Crew for our Cycle Jam this weekend. We will miss her and send our thoughts and prayers out to her immediate family and her racing family. We have a guardian angel on Turn Seven forever.

“My prayers are also with the rider involved that he heals in body, mind and heart. He got caught up in something that was no fault of his.”
