The Central Roadracing Association held its fourth and penultimate 2013 event over the August 2-4 weekend, giving racers one last chance to claim the lap record on Brainerd International Raceway’s repaved 2.5 mile Competition Course. Aside from having the near perfect weather conditions all weekend, racers also were pleased to learn that Czaia Law (a new sponsor for DeKeyrel Racing) would be putting up a purse for multiple races throughout the weekend.
The dual sprint weekend format gave club veterans in the Unlimited category six chances to set the bar, and the top runners came out swinging. Bell Helmets racer Shane Keaveny won all three Saturday sprints by leading flag to flag on his Honda CBR1000RR, but Scott Stall set the day’s fastest lap during the Unlimited Superbike sprint, posting record lap of 1:36.570 on his Kawasaki ZX-10R. During Saturday’s Gran Prix sprint, Keaveny fell just short of Stall’s flyer with a 1:36.586, a lap time that Kaleb DeKeyrel impressively matched on board his Yamaha YZF-R6 middleweight machine. In his first weekend back since his June engine failure, Zach Hughes led the opening laps of Sunday’s Unlimited Supersport sprint. Keaveny uncharacteristically turned his first lap in fourth place, but the veteran smoothly worked his way back to the front of the field, and not only passed Stall to take the win, but also set a lap record time of 1:36.408 on the final lap. Ultimately Scott Stall rose to the occasion during Sunday’s Unlimited Superbike race by posting a time of 1:35.347 and taking his first Unlimited class win of the season.
When asked about his race, Stall said “I was very focused during that race… On the warm up lap I knew I was going to go quicker than I did the previous race day. Jason Farrell from Farrell Performance has been helping me out this season. He knows these bikes very well and has been helping me to tune my bike to handle better. The idea was to get the bike sorted out handling wise, then throw on new pads and a fresh Pirelli slick [SC0 soft compound tire]. The plan came together well.”
In June, 13 year old Mason DeKeyrel announced that he would no longer be racing his Moriwaki 250, and move up to a Yamaha YZF-R6. His 600cc debut was nothing short of amazing, as he swept all six of Saturday’s novice Middleweight and Heavyweight sprints, posting lap times in the 1:40 range. Novice points leader Jake Schmotter was in hot pursuit, and took full advantage of Mason’s eventful Sunday by winning every race DeKeyrel had issues in. An engine failure in Sunday morning practice forced Mason to race on a borrowed bike set up for a much larger rider. DeKeyrel recalls “My first race of the day…I ended up stalling on the start, I was able to start it back up and started working my way up through the pack. I ended up finishing 2nd. I ended up crashing on the last lap in turn 3 in Race 3. I was alright, and the bike was able to be fixed for the next race. My fifth race of the day…I tried to go around the outside in turn 2, but I ended up tucking the front. The corner workers came to me right away and got me into the ambulance. I fractured my left shoulder and possibly fractured my left hand, my right elbow had pretty deep road rash… All in all, I’m happy to have made the switch to the R6!”
Big brother Kaleb DeKeyrel was also in top form, nearly sweeping the Expert Middleweight and Heavyweight sprints, and getting consistent podium finishes in the Unlimited category. Racing his second weekend as an expert, Kyle Ohnsorg was right behind Kaleb for the entire weekend, taking a win after Kaleb crashed out of Saturday’s Heavyweight Supersport sprint.
Cole Naymark returned to the Lightweight field after his turn 11 crash in June, quickly returning to form and joining Kyle Knutson and Aaron Collins at the front of the Lightweight field. The veterans were joined by Lightweight newcomer Brett Folkerts on a Suzuki SV650 superbike, and the four battled for the lead throughout the weekend (Naymark, Knutson, and Folkerts all taking category wins). Rookie Luke Trombley chased Chris Henkel for the Lightweight Novice lead on Saturday, but Kyle Dahl took Novice Lightweight Superbike and Gran Prix wins on Sunday aboard his Kawasaki Ninja 650 superbike.
As Mason DeKeyrel had retired his Moriwaki, novices Trevor Treviranus and Jake Schmotter rode their supermoto bikes against expert Christian Schmidt’s Kawasaki Ninja 300 for Ultralight race wins. While Schmidt swept the Expert wins, Schmotter and Treviranus split the Novice wins. The Ninja 250 cup sprints featured consistent battles between experts Jon Smrecek, James Roberts, John Buren, and Jesse Nelson, while the Novice ranks were led by Bryan Lachmiller, Drew Sivertsen, Lucas Sanlan, and Tanner Hunter. Drew Sivertsen consistently finished on the novice podium, despite racing with a separated shoulder.
The CRA’s 2013 season will come to a close during the September 13-15 weekend. The club will host their traditional season-end endurance event.
