World Superbike: Gagne & Attack vs. The World, Part 2

Featured In the December 2022 issue of Roadracing World:

Friday had gone about as well as could be expected for two-time MotoAmerica Superbike Champions Attack Racing and Jake Gagne in their Superbike World Championship wild card entry. When Saturday dawned, the team was ready to spend the day making smaller changes in more areas, looking for a better overall package for the undulating, fast Autodromo Internacional do Algarve.

“We’re working on a lot of little things. Electronics. Suspension. We’re trying to bring the bike and the rider together,” Attack Racing’s Richard Stanboli said.

The team had settled on its tire choices, which came at a cost. The way that World Superbike allocates its tires is to give each team a number of stickers that can be used over the weekend. Once the rider leaves the pits with a tire, it is considered part of the team’s tire allocation. Without a real reference point, Gagne was trying them all, and trial and error at this level is expensive.

“We put a tire on and he rode it for one lap and knew that he wasn’t going to use that one,” said Oscar Solis, U.S. Road Racing Manager for Pirelli, who was working in the Attack garage for the Algarve round…

Dunlop Q5 & Q5S Tire Intro: Superbike Tested! In The December Issue

Featured In the December 2022 issue of Roadracing World:

Before tire warmers became common in the early 1990s, it took a few laps to warm up race tires. Even after the advent of tire warmers, they were only used on racing slicks and DOT-labeled (signifying that they were theoretically street legal) treaded racing tires. Anything that was actually made for street use was usually hard as a rock and discarded.

Now the market has produced DOT-labeled street tires that don’t need tire warmers and can get within a couple of seconds of an overall track record when fitted on a factory Superbike with Jake Gagne at the controls.

It was impressive watching the best MotoAmerica Superbike riders in the United States rip around Buttonwillow Raceway Park faster than most club stars with the new Dunlop Sportmax Q5 fitted on their actual Superbikes!

“Dunlop Q5 And Q5S Tire Intro: Superbike Tested,” by Chris Ulrich

Dunlop’s new Sportmax Q5 track-day focused tire and its more durable street-oriented Q5S both benefit from the Buffalo, New York factory’s involvement in racing. The company has come a long way since the first U.S.-made racing slicks rolled off the production line in 2013. Going International: MotoAmerica Mini Cup Kids Race In Spain

Featured In the December 2022 issue of Roadracing World:

When the MotoAmerica Mini Cup season concluded, Nathan Gouker and Ryder Davis accounted for six wins out of the 10 races in the 160cc class. Gouker, 11, edged Davis, 13, 184-180 in the final point standings to take the title, with Davis the runner-up. That earned each an invite to compete at an official FIM event in Spain during the days leading up to the final MotoGP race of the year at Circuit Ricardo Tormo, near Valencia.

And so they did, taking on some of the world’s best Mini road racers, coming away with more experience and solid finishes…

Yamaha MT-10 SP Intro, In The December Issue

Featured In the December 2022 issue of Roadracing World:

Thanks to the lingering effects of supply chain issues and logistical challenges, Yamaha started receiving 2022-model MT-10 SP roadsters late in the calendar year. But the good news is that it’s a stylish, naked sportbike that goes, stops, and handles with the best of them even if it’s a 2022 model.

I attended the launch of the original FZ-10 back in 2017. The FZ-10 was essentially a naked YZF-R1S with a retuned engine and the addition of cruise control, and it was fun to ride.

Since then, Yamaha engineers have evolved the company’s FZ performance naked-bike line with an emphasis on torque, with the new MT designation standing for “Master of Torque.” Which bring us to the MT-10 ‘hyper-naked’ model, which offers better performance, more adjustability, and more aggressive styling. The MT-10 SP is at another level…

“Yamaha MT-10 SP Intro: Worth The Wait,” by David Swarts

Starting with the frame and engine of its YZF-R1, Yamaha has evolved the MT-10 naked roadster into a torquey beast with excellent road manners, thanks to upgraded Ohlins suspension components and other choice bits. Read our impression of the biggest Yamaha Master of Torque—it’s in the latest issue of Roadracing World!

Roadracing World‘s Sam Fleming and Melissa Berkoff visited the TM Racing factory in Pesaro, Italy in April 2022.

TM Racing makes arguably the most exquisite racing motorcycles for MX, Enduro and Supermoto in the world. They also made a championship-winning Moto3 road race bike!

Join Sam and Melissa on a very in-depth tour of the factory including the machine shop(s), the handcrafted engines and the assembly.

These videos are unscripted and had to be shot contemporaneously with the tour so forgive any verbal slips and/or the handheld nature of the camera work.
