Road America Joins Loudon And Willow Springs In Support Of Air Fence Project

0

In a Wednesday afternoon phone call to Roadracing World headquarters, Road America President and General Manager George Bruggenthies said that the Wisconsin racetrack will deploy Air Fence purchased by the Roadracing World fund raising drive.

“We’re willing to put it up,” Bruggenthies said. “Obviously, we want to make everything as safe as possible for the racers.”

Road America, located in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, is the third major racetrack to support our Air Fence fund-raising drive. New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire and Willow Springs International Raceway in Rosamond, California have also expressed support for the project and have committed to deploying Air Fence purchased with funds raised by Roadracing World.

Isle of Man TT Cancelled Due To Fears Of Spreading Foot And Mouth Disease

0

The 2001 Isle of Man TT was officially called off today by the Man government.

At issue is the potential spread of Hoof and Mouth Disease to livestock on the island, which has to date remained free of the disease now ravaging herds in England and continental Europe.

Government spokesmen said there was no way to properly disinfect the huge crowds of visitors–and their vehicles–drawn to the Island by the annual event.

The loss of tourist revenue caused by the cancellation was the lesser of two evils when compared to the potential loss of livestock herds built up over decades, according to farmers.

WERA and Wegman Push Air Module/Air Fence Fund To $84,695 With More Coming In

New donations from The Wegman Benefit Fund and WERA Motorcycle Roadracing have combined with dozens of donations from individuals to push our fund to protect racers with air-filled soft barriers to $84,695. In the meantime, both Alpina Safety Systems and Air Fence have committed to delivery in time for the AMA race at Road Atlanta May 17-20.

“I think it is great that you have undertaken this crusade and I applaud you for trying to get something done faster than bureaucracy,” wrote WERA President Evelyne Clarke with her pledge. “I spoke with (AMA Pro Racing CEO)Scott (Hollingsworth)the other day and told him to use this as a positive–hopefully he will see it as such. He told me that the AMA had this plan in the works and that they were trying to figure out ALL the logistics – I believe him – Daytona definitely made him see what a ‘bad’ weekend can be all about (even if it was riders doing dumb things and not within any official’s control). I just wish he could spend time in the trenches instead of the office and meetings trying to keep things going there and constantly putting out fires that rise from the trenches. I still have faith in him, just wish he wasn’t pulled in 50 directions at once. Anyway–WERA will put a check in today’s mail for $1450 to cover 50% of a section. This is done for all the WERA riders who go on to pursue Pro Racing careers in the AMA. Good luck with your project and please try to work toward understanding that Scott Hollingsworth is not the ‘bad guy’, he’s just the guy who got saddled with a job bigger than most people would want to undertake and that he got thrown into it feet first with not a lot of help!”

“I was out of town all last week and just got wind of the Air Fence fund,” wrote Gordon Lunde, Sr. of the Wegman Benefit Fund. “Please put us in for a $2900 donation. The check will be on the way tomorrow morning. The Wegman Fund exists to help racers after they have been injured but I think we should also help in the prevention of those injuries. I applaud the effort! Thank you, John, for always keeping the safety of the riders at heart.”

Other donations included one from Bill St. John/Project Monza for $400, and $100 donations came in from Mark Sutton, Steve Scott/LRRS #47, journalist Eric Putter, Jim Doerfler, Ira Englebardt, Joe & Nancy Fenech, Earl Hayden, AMA 250cc Grand Prix Champion Chuck Sorensen, D&D Thrush Farms and Jeff Wilson of American Suzuki. A $58 donation came in from Kelly Thornton and more $50 donations came in from Kenyon Kluge/K2 Racing, Darin Nichols/Team Unit, Richard Davis, Allen Lyon/Ducati Online, Eric H. Mathy, Steve Breckenridge and Jim Race/Speaksy Racing, while another $30 came in from George Gervasi/Projekt9 Racing.

“It makes me proud to help protect my friends while they are doing their job,” wrote Steve Breckenridge. “I have seen Grant Lopez and others hit too many unprotected, non-removable walls. I don’t want to see it anymore. I wish I could give more, but my very tight racing budget cannot support it. I hope it helps. Thank you for looking out for all of us racers.”

Other comments came from the following:

Eric Putter: “Tell John he is doing a great job.”

Ira Englebardt: “Awesome – Happy someone is taking care of it. Yeah, that’s the ticket!”

Erik H. Mathy: “First off, I have to say that your willingness to take the bull by the horns is just fantastic. AMA’s dragging their feet? Screw ’em! We’ll take care of it ourselves! Awesome, awesome, awesome!”

Kelly Thornton: “In memorial of no more stupid, crippling accidents to all riders, famous or not.”

Richard Davis: “I’m just a racing fan and occasional track-day enthusiast, but I’m sending in a check for $50 today. This is a great cause! The first AMA racing event I attended was the 2000 Laguna Seca round in which Jamie Bowman was killed after crashing into an unprotected barrier. Needless to say, this put a dark cloud over the entire weekend’s events and personally left me feeling sick to my stomach. That was almost a full year ago and the fact that no significant safety improvements have been made is just ridiculous. Exactly how many Jamie Bowman’s does AMA Racing need to see killed before they take action? Three? A dozen? Twenty? A hundred? Let’s just hope that someone over there has enough sense to accept FREE safety equipment that will save racers’ careers and lives. Great job, Roadracing World. Thank you!”

Gerret Swearingen: “I just paid $20 towards the Air Fence fund and wanted to make a comment. I think that it is ironic that those that are paid to talk ( Roadracing World employees ) are doing something about protecting our racers while those that are supposed to do something (AMA officers) are talking about protecting our racers. I applaud Roadracing World’s creation of and raising money for the Air Fence fund and urge you to continue the good work. The smallest good deed is better than the grandest intention.”

Bill Capshaw/ICE Motorsports: “Thanks for taking the initiative on the Air Fence issue. We race for fun, and the guys that ride for me are my friends. We ride to the track together, and we all want to go home together at the end of the race weekend. There has not been much that an individual can do to improve the safety of racing, so I think this is a great idea. If we weren’t in the middle of the road racing season, the check would be bigger. But this is what I can do for now. We appreciate the opportunity that AMA racing gives to us–I can’t think of any other national racing series in any form of motorsports wher small teams and individuals without major sponsors can go out and race with the very best. We were on top of the world last season when Shane Clarke piloted our GSXR to the Top Privateer position in the Mid-Ohio Superbike race. Thanks for coordinating this effort so that even the smaller teams can give the AMA some idea of how important the racers are to us.”

SFX Motor Sports Would Be Happy To Use Fund Air Barriers, If They Are Made Available

Roy Janson, SFX Motor Sports Vice President of Operations, said April 23 that Formula USA would be happy to use air barriers purchased by our fund raiser and would deploy semi-trucks owned by SFX Motor Sports to pick up and return the barriers to their warehouse location, should the barriers be made available.

Speaking in a late-afternoon phone call to Roadracing World headquarters in Lake Elsinore, California, Janson said “Formula USA is very interested in seeing where this Air Fence would be available, and if it was available for us to use we would arrange for shipping.

“We’re thrilled to see this immediate response from the road racing community on this very important issue, which is rider safety,” continued Janson. “If this Air Fence is available for us to use at our events, at the tracks where we have our scheduled activities, providing that the tracks agree, we would look forward to the chance to use these additional recognized protection devices and we would arrange to pick up and return it with our own vehicles.”

Yamaha Announces Contingency Program, Including 250cc Grand Prix

0

This just in from Yamaha:

“Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA, announced
the return of its road racing contingency support program for 2001. In addition to offering last year’s healthy endurance and sprint payouts at
national and regional club races across the country, Yamaha added AMA 250cc GP class support.

“‘Yamaha has built a strong road racing legacy over the years and we recognize that our future Champions hone their skills at both the national and regional levels,’ notes Larry Griffis, Yamaha racing director. ‘It’s important for us to support the sport by supporting Yamaha racers.’

“Yamaha YZF-R1 and R6 racers earning podium finishes in the SFX Formula USA series will see a $2000 check for first, $750 for second and $500 for third. Top Yamaha performers in selected WERA endurance classes will be rewarded with $1500, $750 and $500 respectively and regional club race winners will be $1000 richer with $500 and $350 going to second and third place finishers.

“The lightweight and sharp handling Yamaha YZF R1 and R6 out-powered the competition last year in a big way. ‘We wrote a lot of checks last year-a lot more than we expected,’ said Griffis. As a result, Griffis says he expects to see even more Yamaha YZFs on the grids–and on the podium for
2001.

“For additional information regarding program details including specific events and tracks or to get registration forms, go to the Yamaha web site at www.yamaha-motor.com.”

We’re Not Even Open And Already It’s $67,267 For 23 Sections Of Air Fence And Counting

It’s 7:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time, the Roadracing World office in Lake Elsinore, California hasn’t even opened up yet, and already our Air Fence fund is up to $67,267 on the basis of two walk-up donations made as we were leaving Willow Springs Raceway last night, $1000 from the G.M.D. Computrack Network and $500 from Racers Edge Performance, the performance parts and Michelin tire distributorship owned by racer Dale Kieffer. That’s enough money for 23 sections of Air Fence.

With Dynamic Logistics pledging the use of a semi-truck to haul the Air Fence sections, and with the first sections already on order for delivery at Road Atlanta, this little internet thing of ours has accomplished more on the improved barrier protection front in a week than anybody else has gotten done in the last three years. Racers make things happen!

And we’re not done yet. At 9:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time, operators will be standing by to take your pledge at (800) 464-8336. Credit cards accepted.

Or pledge online at [email protected], be sure to include your name, address, phone number and amount you pledge.

The section of Air Fence your contribution helps buy may make a difference between your favorite racer being seriously injured or not injured at all. We’re planning Air Fence contributor receptions at tracks where the Air Fence is deployed, where you’ll be able to see and autograph the actual Air Fence section your contribution helped pay for.

Be part of this fantastic movement to improve rider safety now, to make something happen!

Road Atlanta Deployment No Problem Says Alpina Air Module Operations Manager For Motorsports

0

In a Monday-morning phone call to Roadracing World headquarters, an Alpina Safety Systems representative said it would be no problem to deliver FIM-homologated Alpina Air Modules in time for use at the AMA road race scheduled for May 17-20 at Road Atlanta.

According to Alpina Operations Manager For Motorsports Robert Pertl, “You will have your modules for Road Atlanta, no problem.” Pertl called from Austria, where Alpina is based.

Pertl said he had met with AMA Superbike Operations Manager Ron Barrick on numerous occasions over the last several years and that at one meeting Barrick said the AMA wanted to buy 10 sections. But nothing ever came of the meetings and no order was ever placed.

Donations for our Air Fence fund are racing toward $70,000 or enough for 24 sections of air module, which we have been calling Air Fence. The Alpina system is similar to Air Fence and works in the same way but is known as Alpina Air Module. Both brands are FIM homologated, and the advantage of dealing with Alpina is that the modules can be delivered quickly without a lengthy production delay. Pricing is virtually identical.

No Response To Another Offer To Work With AMA On Air Barrier Project

AMA Pro Racing has not replied to another offer to work together on our air barrier fund raising and deployment project.

In the early hours of the project, our e-mails encouraging AMA Pro Racing to join Roadracing World in the project went unanswered.

The latest offer, e-mailed by Roadracing World Editor John Ulrich this morning, read:

“If you want to talk about working out a cooperative deal, let me know. I’ll be over $70K this afternoon and have a truck to haul it.

“If not, no problem.

“See you at the races.”

The one thing Ulrich had wrong in the e-mail was the figure $70K; the fund went over $78K this afternoon.

Loudon To Roadracing World: We Will Be Happy To Deploy Your Air Modules

This just in from Jerry Wood, Motorcycle Safety Director, New Hampshire International Speedway, Loudon, New Hampshire:

“New Hampshire International Speedway would be pleased to accept your offer to bring Air Fence to our AMA National event in June.

“As you know, NHIS is pro-active in the area of rider safety and was the only track in America to purchase the new Air Fence Bike product for its motorcycle program. We understand that all of the tracks in the series do not have a strong motorcycle program and cannot justify the purchase of a soft barrier system.

“Roadracing World is to be commended for taking on this project and the response from the riders, their families, and business people is nothing short of fantastic.

“We at NHIS will be glad to add the project Air Fence to our own and have an even safer track set-up.”

It’s Now $78,007 Or 26 Sections, 780 Feet Of Air Module For Our Racers

A flurry of new donations from racers, performance shops and companies, even clubs has kicked our Air Module Fund up to $78,007 or enough for 26 sections, about 780 linear feet of protection for our racers.

Dynojet Research led the way with a donation of $3200, with Sue and Bruce Meyers of BCM Racing Ducati buying a complete section for $2900. Advanced Motor Sports pledged $2000 in memory of Dirk Piz. L.A. Bikers, a street and racing club, pitched in $1810, and Yoshimura Racing sent $750.

Kurtis Roberts pledged $300, with another $200 each coming from Cliff Nobles and Aaron Yates. MZ Skorpion Cup Racers sent $175, and donations of $100 each came in from Red Fox Racing, Greg Ruffin, John Donald/PTC Racing, Larry Pegram, Pamela Skaff/WERA BBS and J.D. Road America Joins Loudon And Willow Springs In Support Of Air Fence Project

Stay tuned…
