Updated Post With Points: Hopkins Wins Formula Xtreme Race At Loudon

Valvoline EMGO Suzuki’s John Hopkins rode his GSX-R1000 to victory in the Formula Xtreme race at Loudon, beating Bruce Transportation Group’s Josh Hayes and his Honda CBR929RR by 0.553-second.

Hopkins came from third to catch and pass, then hold off Hayes for the win. Immediately after taking the checkered flag, Hopkins crashed in turn one, running wide onto a slick area of the track and locking and tucking the front wheel.

Damon Buckmaster finished third on a Graves Yamaha, 6.307 seconds behind Hopkins. Roger Lee Hayden was fourth ahead of Jake Zemke, Aaron Gobert and Grant Lopez, who is still recovering from a separated shoulder suffered at Road Atlanta.

Roadracingworld.com’s Chris Ulrich was the fastest rider actually on a 750cc Supersport machine in Saturday morning 750cc Supersport practice at New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire.

Many 600cc Supersport riders enter the 750cc Supersport class to get more practice time, because they consider the available Friday-Saturday-Sunday practice time for the 600cc class to be inadequate. (Many 750cc Supersport riders similarly use Superbike practice, and many Pro Thunder riders similarly use Formula Xtreme practice. Because their machines are not eligible for other classes, Formula Xtreme and 250cc Grand Prix riders are unable to enter another class to make up for the lack of official AMA practice time, which starts Friday morning.)

Ben Spies, second in series points, highsided in turn three early in the practice and was transported to the Infield Care Center, where the initial unconfirmed report was that he suffered a broken left collarbone; that report is tentative pending X-rays at Concord Hospital.

Oliver On Pole After 250cc Qualifying Heat Races At Loudon

Rich Oliver won his heat race and pole position for tomorrow’s 250cc Grand Prix race at Loudon, beating Chuck Sorensen by 0.382-second with at average lap time of 1:14.367 and an average speed of 77.453 mph. Sorensen’s average lap time was 1:14.407 and his average speed for the five-lap heat race was 77.412 mph.

Jimmy Filice won the first heat race by 1.804 seconds over Michael Hannas, Filice’s average speed being 77.345 and his average lap time being 1:14.471. Hannas averaged 1:14.838 and 76.967 mph.

Local star Jeff Wood, expected to contend for the win in the first heat race, crashed twice and was credited with 13th.

Wood Wins Fastest AMA Pro Thunder Heat Race And Takes Pole At Loudon

Local hero Eric Wood won the fastest of two AMA Pro Thunder qualifying heat races at Loudon on a Keystone Learning Systems Ducati, holding off Tilley Buell’s David Estok by 0.463-second. Wood’s average speed was 76.380 mph with an average lap time of 1:15.412, vs. Estok’s 76.156 mph and 1:15.534. The time of the 5-lap race was 6 minutes, 19.262 seconds.

Tilley Buell’s Tripp Nobles won the other heat race by 0.713-second over Munroe Motors’ Tom Montano on a Ducati. Nobles’ average speed was 74.896 mph with an average lap time of 1:16.907 vs. Montano’s 74.661 mph and 1:17.149. The time of the 5-lap race was 6:26.303.

Filice Irate At Last-Minute 250cc Grand Prix Grid Changes

Jimmy Filice is irate at last-minute 250cc Grand Prix grid changes that moved local star Jeff Wood out of the “stacked” second 250cc heat race into the “easier” first 250cc heat race, both heat races scheduled for this afternoon at Loudon.

Wood was originally in the same heat race as Rich Oliver, Chuck Sorensen and 1999 Loudon winner Derek MacKelvie King. Filice was in the first heat with no strong competitors.

But apparently due to a registration error, local Gus Holcomb and several other riders were not assigned grid positions. When registration workers corrected that error, they also gave Randy Renfrow a grid position even though he is not at Loudon. That obvious error bumped Wood from one heat race into the other.

Since the procedure for establishing 250cc heat race grid order is to alternate heat assignments, sending entered riders who are first, third, fifth, etc. in points to one heat race and entered riders who are second, fourth, sixth, etc. in points to the other heat race, Filice was outraged that his protests to AMA Pro Racing Director of Competition Merrill Vanderslice resulted in no definite promise of action.

Hooters Suzuki’s Mike Ciccotto won the 750cc Supersport race at Loudon, beating local heroes Chuck Chouinard on his Barry Motorsports/Sparks Steak House Suzuki and Attack Suzuki’s Rich Alexander, Chouinard finishing 8.180 seconds behind Ciccotto and Alexander finishing 12.678 seconds behind.

Chouinard was initially emotional on the podium and had difficulty speaking, but quickly recovered and said he”d been trying to get on the podium at an AMA National since 1992 and finally made it.

Alexander said he was so tired and overheated after the earlier Formula Xtreme race that he required medical attention, and thanked the track medical crew “for putting me back together for this race.”

Roger Lee Hayden on the Bruce Transportation CBR600F4i and points leader Jimmy Moore on the Corona EXTRA Suzuki GSX-R750 collided in turn 3 on lap 6, Hayden trying to make an inside pass and Moore trying to hold him off as they entered the u-turn from the flat infield up the hill outside the track, both crashing. Moore picked up his bike and finished sixth. Hayden came into the pits.

Roadracingworld.com’s Chris Ulrich charged from 11th to 4th but crashed on lap 7, losing the front end in turn 11, shortly after passing Corona EBSCO Suzuki”s Vince Haskovec, with Bruce Transportation”s Josh Hayes right behind.

Hayes passed Haskovec and caught Alexander but couldn”t get past.

Local Hero Eric Wood retired with shifting problems.

Two days after the race, on Monday, Chouinard was disqualified for illegal engine modifications.

Wood Wins Fastest AMA Pro Thunder Heat Race And Takes Pole At Loudon

Local hero Eric Wood won the fastest of two AMA Pro Thunder qualifying heat races at Loudon on a Keystone Learning Systems Ducati, holding off Tilley Buell’s David Estok by 0.463-second. Wood’s average speed was 76.380 mph with an average lap time of 1:15.412, vs. Estok’s 76.156 mph and 1:15.534. The time of the 5-lap race was 6 minutes, 19.262 seconds.

Tilley Buell’s Tripp Nobles won the other heat race by 0.713-second over Munroe Motors’ Tom Montano on a Ducati. Nobles’ average speed was 74.896 mph with an average lap time of 1:16.907 vs. Montano’s 74.661 mph and 1:17.149. The time of the 5-lap race was 6:26.303.

Filice Irate At Last-Minute 250cc Grand Prix Grid Changes

Jimmy Filice is irate at last-minute 250cc Grand Prix grid changes that moved local star Jeff Wood out of the “stacked” second 250cc heat race into the “easier” first 250cc heat race, both heat races scheduled for this afternoon at Loudon.

Wood was originally in the same heat race as Rich Oliver, Chuck Sorensen and 1999 Loudon winner Derek MacKelvie King. Filice was in the first heat with no strong competitors.

But apparently due to a registration error, local Gus Holcomb and several other riders were not assigned grid positions. When registration workers corrected that error, they also gave Randy Renfrow a grid position even though he is not at Loudon. That obvious error bumped Wood from one heat race into the other.

Since the procedure for establishing 250cc heat race grid order is to alternate heat assignments, sending entered riders who are first, third, fifth, etc. in points to one heat race and entered riders who are second, fourth, sixth, etc. in points to the other heat race, Filice was outraged that his protests to AMA Pro Racing Director of Competition Merrill Vanderslice resulted in no definite promise of action.

Updated Post With Points: Ciccotto Wins AMA 750cc Supersport Race At Loudon, Chouinard DQ’d

Hooters Suzuki’s Mike Ciccotto won the 750cc Supersport race at Loudon, beating local heroes Chuck Chouinard on his Barry Motorsports/Sparks Steak House Suzuki and Attack Suzuki’s Rich Alexander, Chouinard finishing 8.180 seconds behind Ciccotto and Alexander finishing 12.678 seconds behind.

Chouinard was initially emotional on the podium and had difficulty speaking, but quickly recovered and said he”d been trying to get on the podium at an AMA National since 1992 and finally made it.

Alexander said he was so tired and overheated after the earlier Formula Xtreme race that he required medical attention, and thanked the track medical crew “for putting me back together for this race.”

Roger Lee Hayden on the Bruce Transportation CBR600F4i and points leader Jimmy Moore on the Corona EXTRA Suzuki GSX-R750 collided in turn 3 on lap 6, Hayden trying to make an inside pass and Moore trying to hold him off as they entered the u-turn from the flat infield up the hill outside the track, both crashing. Moore picked up his bike and finished sixth. Hayden came into the pits.

Roadracingworld.com’s Chris Ulrich charged from 11th to 4th but crashed on lap 7, losing the front end in turn 11, shortly after passing Corona EBSCO Suzuki”s Vince Haskovec, with Bruce Transportation”s Josh Hayes right behind.

Hayes passed Haskovec and caught Alexander but couldn”t get past.

Local Hero Eric Wood retired with shifting problems.

Two days after the race, on Monday, Chouinard was disqualified for illegal engine modifications.
