Air Fence Fund Reaches $132,185 With New Donations From Racers And A Racer’s Father

The Roadracing World Air Fence Fund hit a new total of $132,185 with new donations of $600 from racer Derek MacKelvie King and his father Gordon, $290 from racer James Lickwar and $100 from racer Tony Iannarelli.

A new non-profit corporation, The Roadracing World Action Fund, Inc., has been established to continue our work deploying Air Fence for our racers in all types of motorcycle road races.

Contributors to the Air Fence Fund are invited to sign a section in turn five at Road America today at 6:00 p.m., immediately following a track-hosted party celebrating the 25th anniversary of AMA Superbike at the same location.

The party, complete with cake, and the signing will take place under a large tent in the turn five area.

Contributors to the fund were recently sent the following letter:

Dear Air Fence Fund Contributor,

Thank you for your contribution to our Air Fence Fund. You and hundreds of other competitors, mechanics, businessmen, companies, fans and loved ones involved in motorcycle road racing came together for a worthy cause–to reduce the risk of serious injury faced by our racers.

Your contribution has already helped save racers from serious injury, as demonstrated at Road Atlanta when Tony Lupo and Grant Lopez slid into Air Fence at over 100 mph.

Your quick and generous response showed what AMA members can do when it’s time to stop talking, when’s it’s time to actually DO SOMETHING!

Make no doubt–if we hadn’t done this, our racers would still be waiting for the first Air Fence sections to be deployed, and Lopez and Lupo could have met far more serious fates at Road Atlanta. Instead, as this is written, there are 38 sections of Air Fence and Alpina Air Module ready to be deployed at AMA road races. When we started this, the AMA owned 3 sections total. Thanks to what we did, 15 new Alpina sections were deployed at Road Atlanta just four weeks after we started this crusade, joined by 20 more new Air Fence sections at Road America less than seven weeks after we started this crusade.

We made something happen. That’s what racers do. We can all be proud of what we have done, and enclosed you will find stickers with our new slogan, Racers Take Action, WE Are The AMA.

We have established a new non-profit organization, the Roadracing World Action Fund, and will continue our work to deploy Air Fence for racers in non-AMA events nationwide. Donations are still being accepted.

Thanks again for your help. We have done a good thing–just ask Aaron Yates, or Grant Lopez, or Tony Lupo or anybody else who has hit Air Fence instead of tires or haybales or concrete or a dirt embankment.

The next racer helped by Air Fence could be your favorite rider, or son, or daughter, or brother, or father,or husband….

Sincerely,

John D. Ulrich

Champion Teuchert Fastest In First Supersport Qualifying In Germany

0

By Glenn LeSanto

He’s spent most of the season in the shadows of the likes of James Whitham, Pere Riba and Paolo Casoli. But now he’s back. Jorg Teuchert, in case you’d forgotten, is the reigning Supersport World Champion. He’s currently back in fifth in the Championship points, but only 26 points adrift of the leader, Paolo Casoli. Teuchert finished third at Donington and he’s gone fastest in the first qualifying at Lausitzring, Germany, his homeland.

Teuchert, riding for the German based Wilbers Suspension team, took his Yamaha R6 to the top of the time sheets in wet and conditions. James Whitham had been the early leader, he was one of the first riders to change from wets to intermediates, squeezing in a fast lap before the rain came again.

But later in the qualifying session the rain held off long enough for the track, which riders say is slow to dry, to improve slightly. With a dry appearing the riders, many of whom had been sat in the pit garages waiting, all filed out onto the track with dry tyres fitted. Times soon tumbled and Teuchert, Fabrizio Pirovano, Adam Fergusson, and Vito Guareschi all leap-frogged Whitham on the time sheet, leaving the Englishman back down in fifth spot. Whitham’s team mate, Casoli, was sixth fastest.

The Fuchs Kawasaki team, who are also based in Germany, struggled in the session, with Andrew Pitt their fastest man, down at 15th fastest. But the team had been quick in the wet, so if it rains on Sunday (the forecast is for showers) they may get the chance to impress their local sponsors.
