Diablo And Lacombe To Race Suzukis In Canada

0

From a press release issued by Team Manager Eddy Brunet of Diablo Performance Racing of St-Laurent, Quebec, Canada:

DIABLO CARRYING PROUDLY THE SUZUKI BANNER!

The new racing season is just around the corner and our team is fidgeting with anticipation! Winter is no hibernation season for us! Our team has undergone many positive changes since last season. We reached an agreement with professional rider Kevin Lacombe who will join last year’s Diablo racers Michael Leon and Ugo Levert.

With a fleet of 11 Suzukis (5 GSX-R1000 and 6 GSX-R600) ridden by our three professionals in the Pro Open Superbike, Pro Open Supersport and Pro 600 Supersport categories, the Diablo Performance Racing Team is more than ever Canada’s largest privateer road racing team.

Besides our sponsorship by Suzuki, we also reached an agreement with Bardahl, renewed with Teknic Leathers as well as EBC Brakes, Armour Bodies and are in the process of finding new partners.

We will test our new acquisitions and additions at Willow Springs International Raceway in California; the whole team will be racing there March 15, 16 and 17th as well as April 19, 20 and 21st and we will keep you informed of all the further developments.

According to Dr. Rob Tuluie, his radical Tularis 780 two-stroke will show up for practice at Daytona Thursday morning, then compete in the 200 Mile Team Challenge.

If all goes according to plan, the bike will also compete in Friday’s GTO race and Sunday’s Unlimited GP race. The bike will carry #125 and will be pitted in garage #80 at Daytona International Speedway.

Roadracing World Air Fence Fund Reaches $174,539 For Road Race Use

A spate of eBay auctions and several new donations have brought the Roadracing World Air Fence Fund (for road race use) total to $174,539.

Additional money came from Ken Hill ($3351 in the Bay auction of Eric Bostrom leathers), Andre Espaillet ($1325 in the eBay auction of a new set of custom-made Barnacle Bill leathers, on top of Andre’s earlier donation of $250,Jason Routhier ($810 in the eBay auction of Jamie James’ photo shoot leathers and boots) and anonymous ($412 in the eBay auction of a Helmet autographed by most of the 1999 Team Honda.)

Donations came in from Marcus McBain, adding $500 added to his previous donation of $1500; Leo Sulpy at $250; Thomas Pfuner/I&E Innovative Homes Racing Team at $130; Robert Sunday at $100; Chuck Perry at $100; Emmett Dibble at $100; Michael Janes(WERA,CCS) at $100; Michael Reeves at $50; Douglas Thompson at $50; Ryan Cilley/In Memory of Jamie Bowman at $50; Masahiro & Katsuo Iizuka/In Memory of Jamie Bowman/Toby Jorgensen at $50; Karl Axelson at $39; Cory Mann at $25; Gary Koppelman at $25; Steve Price at $25; and Frank Gonzales at $20.

“As always, thank you for your hard work,” wrote McBain. “My girlfriend Renate and I were witness to what the Air Fence is all about at the GNF this past year. This is the 4th GNF I have attended and the Air Fence was simply the bomb. I have witnessed GNF weekends with multiple ambulance calls and the Air Fence not only saved injuries, but more importantly, I believe it saved lives. As a racer, I felt comfortable knowing the Air Fence was there in case I needed it, too. Please accept $500 towards the Air Fence and as always, count on my future support.”

Emmett Dribble dedicated his $100 contribution to Natalie at Roadracing World, for looking for a hard-to-find back-issue for him.

Steve Price gave $25 “for all my BBS friends. Go Karter.”

Karl Axelson says the amount of his contribution of $39 has special significance, although he did not elaborate.

A $10 contribution attributed to “Anonymous” in an earlier post should have been credited to Glen Hewitt.

Meanwhile, the Roadracing World Air Fence Fund for dirt track use now totals $15,742 with a new $50 donation from Larry Woodward, who wrote, “Thanks for your help.”

Ducati’s MotoGP Bike: It’s Red

0

Copyright 2002, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.

By Melissa Berkoff

The public should get its first view of Ducati Corse’s MotoGP contender in a few weeks, in a press release expected sometime in March. Reports on the appearance of the bike from various employees of Ducati Corse who have seen the design range from “It looks like a GP bike” to “It looks like a Ducati” to “It’s red.” The bike does have Ducati’s characteristic trellis frame, and the layout of the “Twin-Twin” engine gives a typical Ducati Twin-esque look when viewed in profile.

As to whether or not it sounds like a Ducati, that remains to be determined as the engine has not been fired up yet. It is also unknown whether the chosen firing order–with cylinders on the same bank firing simultaneously to mimic the feel and power delivery of a V-Twin–will work as intended. Once tests begin, the option of a more traditional firing order will be explored as well.

Honda’s View Of Last Testing Day At Valencia

0

From a press release issued by Castrol Honda:

BAYLISS TOPS SUPERBIKE TIMES IN SPAIN

Defending World Superbike Champion Troy Bayliss set the fastest time in the three-day pre-season test session which ended at Valencia, Spain on Monday.

The Australian was 0.2s faster than Ducati team-mate Ben Bostrom as Aprilia rider Noriyuki Haga took the third best time on his return to Superbike after finishing runner-up in the 2000 championship.

Spaniard Ruben Xaus was fourth fastest ahead of a disappointed Colin Edwards who ended the test in fifth place and by crashing, without injury, on his very last lap.

Edwards completed 240 laps of the 2.49-mile circuit, more laps than any other rider, and remains in confident mood for the opening round on March 10 at Valencia.

“I had the qualifying tyre in the back of the machine and was going for the big lap,” Edwards explained. “I came out of the left-hand third corner and before I’d changed direction for the right-hander I was down.

“I guess lap 241 was one too many. But we’ve had a very good test and got through a lot of work in readiness for next week’s races here. We’ve also found a really good Michelin race tyre but I need to find a one-lap Superpole tyre that suits me and the machine – that’s what we’ve left Michelin working on before next week’s first round.”

Superbike newcomer Hitoyasu Izutsu was sixth fastest on a Kawasaki with British Ducati rider Neil Hodgson improving on his previous two days’ performance to finish seventh.

Final World Superbike test times:

1 Troy Bayliss, Australia (Ducati) 1:34.261

2 Ben Bostrom, USA (Ducati) 1:34.401

3 Noriyuki Haga, Japan (Aprilia) 1:34.777

4 Ruben Xaus, Spain (Ducati) 1:34.908

5 Colin Edwards, USA (Castrol Honda) 1:35.053

6 Hitoyasu Izutsu, Japan (Kawasaki)
1:35.116

7 Neil Hodgson, GB (Ducati) 1:35.459

8 Gregorio Lavilla, Spain (Kawasaki) 1:35.584

9 Pier-Francesco Chili, Italy (Ducati) 1:35.611

10 Lucio Pedercini, Italy (Ducati) 1:35.618

Graves Introduces Back-torque-limiting Slipper Clutch

0

From a press release:

Graves Motorsports Slipper Clutch Now Available For The Yamaha YZF-R1

After fours years of development, the Graves Motorsports Slipper Clutch is now available.

Final revisions were completed and tested on the Graves Formula Xtreme Yamaha during the February 12-14 AMA Team Test Session held at California Speedway in Fontana, California. The test results were excellent, resulting in Damon Buckmaster setting a new Formula Xtreme lap record. The slipper clutch worked flawlessly, living up to the stringent requirements of Chuck Graves, President of Graves Motorsports.

“When it comes to the development and testing of high performance parts, you can’t leave anything to chance. The test results were excellent, and I couldn’t ask for anything better!” said Chuck Graves.

Bayliss And Bostrom Quickest On Last Day Of Valencia Tests

0

From a press release issued by SBK International:

SUPERBIKE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

SBK Winter Test – Valencia 23 – 24 – 25 February 2002

Valencia, Ricardo Tormo Circuit

25 February 2002

The hot lap times matched the summery conditions at Valencia, with Troy Bayliss (Ducati Infostrada) scorching around the Valencian circuit in an astonishing 1:34.261, almost as fast as the all-time circuit motorcycle record of 1:34.070.

The existing official Superbike lap record of 1:36.128, set in race conditions, was simply demolished by the top 12 riders.

Ben Bostrom (L&M Ducati), riding on Dunlops as opposed to Bayliss’ Michelins, was second quickest, with a personal best lap of 1:34.401 coming in the penultimate session.

Noriyuki Haga’s Aprilia was quick enough for the Japanese rider to leave the track third quickest overall, while Ruben Xaus, Bayliss’ Ducati Infostrada teammate, was the last of the fast four inside the 1:34 bracket.

2000 season World Champion Colin Edwards (Castrol Honda) crashed trying to improve his best time in the final session, but was still fifth fastest.

Hitoyasu Izutsu proved the speed of man and Kawasaki Racing Team machine by moving up to sixth fastest overall, giving the four cylinder manufacturers a shot in the arm in the run up to the season proper.

Neil Hodgson took the top privateer slot despite feeling frustrated by his seventh-fastest time.
Gregorio Lavilla, the local favourite, was faster than the man he replaced in the Alstare Suzuki camp, Pierfrancesco Chili.

Lucio Pedercini, the third private Ducati rider in the top ten, performed excellently over all three days, and just edged James Toseland out into 11th.

Steve Martin (DFX Pirelli Ducati) could not improve on his times from day two but he did finish inside the lap record with a 1:35.962.

Twenty-five riders took part in Superbike the tests, but despite improving his time in the final day, Peter Goddard was disappointed to finish only 21st fastest on the factory Benelli.

Frenchman Fabien Foret was in unstoppable World Supersport form at Valencia, performing a similar job to Bayliss in a different class of racing.

The Ten Kate Honda rider waited right until the final session to set his magnificent 1:37.749 time, almost 1.3 seconds better than his previous pole position record of 1:39.061, obtained in 2001. It was also over two seconds faster than the previous fastest race lap, also set in 2001. The first four riders were all running Pirelli tyres, with the European Champion Alessio Corradi finishing second quickest thanks to his 1:38.069. Behind him came Foret’s teammate, Pere Riba, only 0.037 seconds slower than Corradi.

Yamaha rider Stefano Cruciani rounded out the Pirelli-supported top four, before Jörg Teuchert gave Dunlop and his Yamaha Motor Deutschland team fifth place on the time sheets, with James Whitham running in sixth in the dying seconds of the final session.

Piergiorgio Bontempi upheld Ducati’s honour, finishing 11th fastest on the NCR entered V-Twin.

DUCATI CORSE PRESS INFORMATION

WORLD SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP
Superbike Testing – Valencia (Spain)
Monday February 25th 2002

BAYLISS (DUCATI INFOSTRADA) SETS BLISTERING PACE IN VALENCIA TEST

World champion Troy Bayliss (Ducati Infostrada) fired out a warning to his WSBK rivals with quickest time during the three-day pre-season test session at Valencia, Spain. His time of 1:34.261, set on qualifying tyres on the
final day, was well over a second under the circuit record and even quicker than the extraordinary time of 1:34.56 recorded by Ben Bostrom (Ducati L&M) last December.

Troy, who also set a blistering pace on race tyres, was upbeat about the overall result of the Valencia tests. “Everything was good these three days and in every test we’ve done since the end of last year, we’ve made a major improvement”, he declared. “I did three long-runs on race tyres and their performance was excellent, while on my qualifying tyre I did the fastest lap I’ve ever done around here. Now I’m really looking forward to the race in two weeks time and feeling really confident about the season ahead”.

Ben Bostrom (Ducati L&M) finished the three-day test in second place, just a fraction behind his fellow Ducati Corse rider. “We got the bike dialled in really good during these three days, and although I did the fastest time around here on race tyres, 1:34.7, I know there’s a lot more to come because I was held up on my really quick lap and lost a few tenths”, declared Bostrom. “I’m really excited about the season ahead because I’ve been waiting for it to start since last May, when I injured my shoulder at Monza!”

Ruben Xaus (Ducati Infostrada) was always one of the top 5 throughout, but crashed again today, at the first right-hander. He was fourth quickest with a time of 1:34.908, a tenth slower than Aprilia’s Noriyuki Haga and a shade quicker than Colin Edwards (Honda). “I’m pretty happy about the times I recorded around here, but we have to find out about why I’m falling because I don’t really have any explanation for it”, declared Xaus. “Maybe the track just doesn’t suit my style of riding, because I wasn’t pushing that hard and
my times came easily or perhaps we’ll just have to use a different tyre because I’ve got no real problems in the front. I was one of the fastest on
race tyres today but really didn’t have the chance to go for a quick qualifying time”.

The 13-round World Superbike Championship gets underway on March 10th at Valencia.

Diablo And Lacombe To Race Suzukis In Canada

Tularis Scheduled To Show Up At Daytona Tomorrow, For F-USA Weekend

Copyright 2002, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.

The Slipper Clutch will be available through Graves Motorsposts in limited production, and will retail for $3500.

Bayliss And Bostrom Quickest On Last Day Of Valencia Tests

Ducati Weighs In On Valencia Tests

From a Ducati press release:

DUCATI CORSE PRESS INFORMATION

WORLD SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP
Superbike Testing – Valencia (Spain)
