TROMBINO TOPS IN SUPERBIKE
SHANNONVILLE, ON – Kleinburg, ON’s Frank Trombino was the pacesetter on the opening day of practice for the Honda Motorcycles Challenge, the opening round of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship, at Shannonville Motorsport Park on Friday.
Making his debut with the Honda Canada / Orion Motorsports team, Trombino lapped the 1.5-mile Shannonville ‘Pro’ circuit in 1:06.734 on his Honda RC51 in the final practice session of the day.
Toronto’s Michael Taylor was second fastest on the Yamaha Motor Canada / Brooklin Cycle Yamaha YZF-R1 with a time of 1:07.025. Despite falls in both the morning and afternoon sessions Huntington Beach, CA resident Owen Weichel placed third at 1:07.178 aboard the Canadian Kawasaki ZX-7RR.
“I’m surprised how quickly I’ve been able to adapt to the RC51,” said Trombino, who finished fourth in last year’s Parts Canada Superbike series riding for Yamaha. “The bike can certainly go faster. It’s just a matter of me getting adjusted to it.”
Trombino’s teammate, defending series champion Steve Crevier of Maple Ridge, BC was fifth quickest in practice on Friday aboard his Honda RC51 with a time of 1:07.653. Just ahead of him was Sherbrooke, QC’s Francis Martin, who recorded a 1:07.210 on the Suzuki Canada / Fast Company Suzuki GSX-R1000.
Former Canadian Superbike champ Jordan Szoke of Brantford, ON was eighth quickest on a Blackfoot Motosports Suzuki GSX-R1000 with a time of 1:08.493. Szoke is making a one-off appearance at Shannonville.
In other action at Shannonville, Trombino also led the way in practice for the International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Open Sport Bike national support class. Trombino, the two-time defending champion in the category, recorded a best lap of 1:07.973 aboard his Honda CBR954RR.
Weichel set the quickest time in practice for the Yoshimura 600 Sport Bike class with a lap of 1:08.748 on his Kawasaki ZX-6R. Defending champion Crevier was third quickest at 1:08.856 riding a Honda CBR600F4i.
Official qualifying for all three national classes will be held Saturday. Practice begins at 8:30 am with the first qualifying session scheduled for 12:45 pm. Winner of the Parts Canada Superbike pole will receive the MPM Array Pole Award, a Swiss Force Carbon Fiber embellished watch.
Feature races will run Sunday afternoon.
This weekend’s event will be televised on TSN on Sunday, June 23 at 6:00 pm EDT and later this year on Quebec’s RDS and across Canada on the Outdoor Life Network.

Régis improves his time in the free practice but ends 17th in the first official sessions.
An overcast sky during the tests heralded the great wave of bad weather announced yesterday. The MotoGP sessions were in the dry, but the rain was approaching and arrived just a few minutes after the finish. In the morning sessions, Régis Laconi made thirteenth best time, a bit over a second after the leader, Checa. After ten minutes in the afternoon qualifying sessions, he cut a second off the free practice times: 1’37.988, making 17th provisional place.

“We haven’t yet found the right settings for the engine brake/clutch system. This meant I had some difficulty entering very tight corners, and twice I missed the curve completely and went straight down the escape track. It’s a pity, because thing aren’t going badly, and I tried out a number of things on the bike with some pretty good results. Even so, what really matters is the final position and I’m not happy to find myself in 17th place. There are some sections on the track where I lose a few tenths and they all add up to that 1 second and 3 tenths: however close it may be to the leader, it pushes you down the ratings. The Cube’s coming on and I’m pleased, but I’d clearly like to do better on my “home” track. Now we’ll see what the weather holds in store for us. I’ve already got some good references for the race, but if it rains tomorrow and I can’t improve today’s times, my starting position won’t be that great.”

With some work on the front end tonight I know I can continue to improve tomorrow. At one stage during qualifying, the front end folded under me, in Turn 1 and it took all my physical strength to hold the bike up, so I guess I have learnt not to go into Turn 1 quite as hard as I had planned.
“I am learning the racing lines here with every lap and I used this session today to follow as many of the other riders as possible. Tonight, I plan to review my ride today and see where the opportunities are for me to improve tomorrow.”

The Michelin logos are gone from the paddock bridge and the timing and scoring tower at Road Atlanta after a four-year run.
The timing and scoring tower now displays Pirelli logos and the bridge is blank, without logos, pending approval of a proposed logo layout by Pirelli executives in Italy. Because the Pirelli logo will not fit proportionally on the bridge, multiple logos run side by side may be used instead.
In addition to becoming a new Road Atlanta sponsor, Pirelli has also signed on as the official tire of the Panoz car racing school.
Michelin did not renew its sponsorship agreement with the racetrack and Pirelli, which recently relocated its U.S. headquarters to Rome, Georgia, jumped on the opportunity.

Weichel set the quickest time in practice for the Yoshimura 600 Sport Bike class with a lap of 1:08.748 on his Kawasaki ZX-6R. Defending champion Crevier was third quickest at 1:08.856 riding a Honda CBR600F4i.
Official qualifying for all three national classes will be held Saturday. Practice begins at 8:30 am with the first qualifying session scheduled for 12:45 pm. Winner of the Parts Canada Superbike pole will receive the MPM Array Pole Award, a Swiss Force Carbon Fiber embellished watch.
Feature races will run Sunday afternoon.
This weekend’s event will be televised on TSN on Sunday, June 23 at 6:00 pm EDT and later this year on Quebec’s RDS and across Canada on the Outdoor Life Network.

Régis improves his time in the free practice but ends 17th in the first official sessions.
An overcast sky during the tests heralded the great wave of bad weather announced yesterday. The MotoGP sessions were in the dry, but the rain was approaching and arrived just a few minutes after the finish. In the morning sessions, Régis Laconi made thirteenth best time, a bit over a second after the leader, Checa. After ten minutes in the afternoon qualifying sessions, he cut a second off the free practice times: 1’37.988, making 17th provisional place.

“We haven’t yet found the right settings for the engine brake/clutch system. This meant I had some difficulty entering very tight corners, and twice I missed the curve completely and went straight down the escape track. It’s a pity, because thing aren’t going badly, and I tried out a number of things on the bike with some pretty good results. Even so, what really matters is the final position and I’m not happy to find myself in 17th place. There are some sections on the track where I lose a few tenths and they all add up to that 1 second and 3 tenths: however close it may be to the leader, it pushes you down the ratings. The Cube’s coming on and I’m pleased, but I’d clearly like to do better on my “home” track. Now we’ll see what the weather holds in store for us. I’ve already got some good references for the race, but if it rains tomorrow and I can’t improve today’s times, my starting position won’t be that great.”

“Its my first time at this track and although I placed 19th, I’ve improved on my time from this mornings practice session by 1.4 seconds so I am happy with that. With some work on the front end tonight I know I can continue to improve tomorrow. At one stage during qualifying, the front end folded under me, in Turn 1 and it took all my physical strength to hold the bike up, so I guess I have learnt not to go into Turn 1 quite as hard as I had planned.
“I am learning the racing lines here with every lap and I used this session today to follow as many of the other riders as possible. Tonight, I plan to review my ride today and see where the opportunities are for me to improve tomorrow.”

The Michelin logos are gone from the paddock bridge and the timing and scoring tower at Road Atlanta after a four-year run.
The timing and scoring tower now displays Pirelli logos and the bridge is blank, without logos, pending approval of a proposed logo layout by Pirelli executives in Italy. Because the Pirelli logo will not fit proportionally on the bridge, multiple logos run side by side may be used instead.
In addition to becoming a new Road Atlanta sponsor, Pirelli has also signed on as the official tire of the Panoz car racing school.
Michelin did not renew its sponsorship agreement with the racetrack and Pirelli, which recently relocated its U.S. headquarters to Rome, Georgia, jumped on the opportunity.
