THIRD VICTORY FOR POGGIALI

It’s sufficient to check the race classification to understand Manuel’s supremacy: Nieto, the second qualified got a gap of 22 seconds. Honestly the first part of this Italian GP has been very hard won as Randy De Puniet was catching the San Marino rider. But the French rider crashed twice so Poggiali did not get any problem to end the race in first position. Now Manuel is leading the world championship with an advantage of 19 points from Rolfo today 4th qualified.

Manuel Poggiali: “For the first time in my life I made a good start so I could easily maintain my favourite pace. To avoid the same mistake of Jerez I pushed hard immediately after the start knowing that De Puniet could catch me without any problem. Anyway I had a bit of advantage anyway but I decided to maintain my pace for the tyres. Then Randy crashed and I have been able to win easily. Anyway my objective is still the same: I am not thinking about the title. I just want to learn as much as I can because there are many fast and constant riders like Rolfo. I feel like a football team that is fighting for the safety but in the middle of the season is also leading the championship”.

Aaron Gobert To Have Surgery Monday, Hopes To Race At Brainerd

Yamaha’s Aaron Gobert plans to have surgery on his broken left hand and wrist Monday, June 9 and may race again as soon as the June 27-29 AMA event at Brainerd International Raceway.

“I plan on seeing (Dr. Arthur) Ting Monday and being operated on Monday (June 9) night. Apparently, I may be able to race at Brainerd,” said Gobert, when he returned to Road America Saturday afternoon.

“I pretty much punched my hand into the ground at 100 mph, they said. So the joint and all the bones around it took the impact. Luckily, it’s not too much of a joint fracture, but it’s in the joint. Both bones in the wrist and the thumb bone.”

Gobert said it had just started to sprinkle rain while he was riding his Graves Yamaha YZF-R1 during Formula Xtreme practice Friday, June 6.

“But the track wasn’t wet yet,” said Gobert. “I was down in Canada Corner. On the exit, the bike started to run wide, so I got on the gas really hard to pull the thing back on and run sideways at the exit. As I ran out wide at the exit, I must have just touched the white line. I remember going full-lock sideways, flat-out in third gear…I knew it was going to happen right then and there. I said, ‘Here we go.'”

According to eyewitness Chris Ulrich, who Gobert had just passed down the Kettle Bottoms straightaway, Gobert almost saved his highside at the exit of Canada Corner and held onto the handlebars while his body dragged along the left side of his bike. Gobert’s Yamaha then turned left and ran into an unpadded concrete wall, past the normal impact area. Gobert and his Yamaha hit the bare concrete wall and bounced back out onto the track.

The session was stopped to attend to Gobert and remove his bike from the track.

“The next thing you know I woke up in the medical center, people standing over me trying to put a neck brace on me, asking me my name and stuff. Apparently, I laid down there lifeless for a fair while.”

This report from racer Dennis Nourry:

Around 7:00 p.m. on June 5, a Loudon road racer was out riding with some friends and hit a car that pulled out in front of him. His name is Andrew Soper (26). He was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious head trauma, shattered arm, pelvis, collarbone, broken nose, and serious internal injuries. Both lungs were punctured and part of his small intestines had to be removed. He underwent over 10 hours of surgery the night of June 5 and as of the afternoon of June 6 was moving his fingers and squinting his eyes while under his drug-induced coma.

The doctors do not yet know the extent of damage caused by the head trauma until he wakes up and comes off the assisted breathing. Andrew needs our prayers for his long and painful recovery.

Tommy Hayden Wins In AMA Supersport At Road America

Copyright 2003, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.

Tommy Hayden took his first AMA Supersport win of the 2003 season and the sixth Supersport race win of his career Sunday at rainy Road America.

Hayden ran a smart race, paced himself as several other racers fell and finally passed his younger brother Roger Lee Hayden with less than two laps remaining to give the Kawasaki ZX-6RR its first AMA Supersport race win.

Erion Honda’s Roger Lee Hayden led from the start, rode very well throughout the race but could not match the speed of his more experienced brother in the latter stages. The younger Hayden was happy with the best AMA Supersport finish of his career.

Damon Buckmaster raced at the front for the entire 10 laps but seemed content to ride his own pace to secure third-place points and pull closer to Championship leader Jamie Hacking, who finished fifth behind Erion Honda’s Alex Gobert.

Provisional AMA Supersport Race Results:

Eric Bostrom Takes AMA Superbike Race Two At Road America

Kawasaki’s Eric Bostrom rode his Dunlop-rain-tire-shod ZX-7RR to a dominant victory Sunday on a wet but drying course at Road America. Not only did Bostrom take his second Superbike race win in the last three races and 11th win of his career, he took over the AMA Superbike points lead by one point over Mat Mladin, who finished 10th today.

Yoshimura Suzuki’s Aaron Yates finished second, over 32 seconds behind Bostrom, after a long battle with Dream Team Ducati’s Larry Pegram, who finished third.

American Honda’s Miguel Duhamel was the only rider who gambled on conditions at the start of the “wet” race and went with cut slick tires. The French-Canadian rider started slowly and was able to score fourth but only after passing Shawn Higbee, Jason Pridmore and Ben Bostrom on the last lap.

Mladin started on rain tires, pitted on lap eight for slicks, ran the fastest lap of the race on the final circuit (2:25.235) but only worked his way back up to 10th.

Yates crashed on the cool-off lap, extensively damaging his GSX-R1000.

Aaron Gobert To Have Surgery Monday, Hopes To Race At Brainerd

Copyright 2003, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.

Eric Bostrom Takes AMA Superbike Race Two At Road America

Copyright 2003, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.
