AMA Supersport Race In Alabama Stopped, Will Be Restarted

The AMA Supersport race at Barber Motorsports Park was stopped on lap 13 of 17 for a crashed bike lying on the course.

At the time of the crash, Miguel Duhamel and Aaron Gobert were racing fiercely for the lead with Damon Buckmaster and Tommy Hayden not far behind.

Jamie Hacking was cruising in fifth, which would have been enough for him to win the AMA Supersport Championship. He only needed to finish eighth or better if Buckmaster won the race and led the most laps.

The race started on a damp but drying track and will be restarted for six more laps.

The restart will give riders who chose to go with rain tires a chance to change to dry race tires. Riders who started the race on some form of rain tire included Lee Acree, Marty Craggill, Ty Howard and Jeff Wood.

The cause of the red flag was a crash by Taylor Knapp, which left Knapp’s Yamaha lying on the course between turns 13 and 14. After the red flag, Knapp appeared to be uninjured, and the teen helped remove his motorcycle from the track.

Graves Yamaha’s Jamie Hacking won the AMA Formula Xtreme race Sunday at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama over Erion Honda’s Jake Zemke, but Yoshimura Suzuki’s Ben Spies, third Sunday, won the 2003 AMA Formula Xtreme Championship.

After earning the bonus point for pole position Saturday, Spies, 19, only needed to finish 24th or better in the final to win his first AMA Championship.

Damon Buckmaster, the only other rider with a mathematical chance at winning the FX Championship, ran a competitive third before being passed by Spies in the late going and finishing fourth.

Attack Suzuki’s Josh Hayes rode his AMA Superstock Championship-winning GSX-R750 to fifth.
