Kart Racer Killed In Collision With Deer At Summit Point Raceway

Copyright 2004, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.

David Smith, 22, of Barrington Hills, Illinois, died Sunday, July 25, from injuries sustained when he collided with a deer while racing in a World Karting Association (WKA) 125cc shifter kart event July 24 at Summit Point Raceway, located in rural Summit Point, West Virginia, according to a posting on the official WKA website.

Confirming the incident to Roadracingworld.com, Summit Point Raceway owner Bill Scott said it was the second collision that he knew of between a deer and a vehicle at speed on the racetrack in the last 25 years. The other collision, according to Scott, was between a deer and a Porsche.

“We went to the game warden, and they gave us permission to shoot (the deer), as if it were an airport,” said Scott. “We did that for a while, but there’s just so many of them. We’re gonna have to figure out some way to identify that deer are in the place. They usually don’t come from the outside during an event. They come from inside the track. We’ll have to scout the woods before an event or everyday or something.

“It’s a tough one. I don’t know what to do about it. You put up Airfence to keep guys OK, but you could hit a rabbit and die. I’m a racer. I come from that background. So we try to make the place better and safer every year. You’re not looking at an owner who tries to side-step problems, but this one is very difficult.

“We know the problem exists, and we’ll do whatever it takes to not let this happen again.”

Yamaha GMT94 Leads World Endurance Championship After Suzuka 8-Hours

0

From a press release issued by FGSport Group:

Yamaha GMT94 Stretch Championship Lead

Following the Suzuka 8 Hours round of the World Endurance Championship, Yamaha GMT94 have extended their lead over Suzuki Castrol to fourteen points. The French Yamaha team made the most of their visit to Japan with a third-in-class result, while Suzuki Castrol’s second hour crash cost them dearly; they had finished ahead of GMT94 in all but one of the timed sessions until then and would have expected to do the same in the race.

Yamaha Austria used their good Suzuka result to close to within five points of Yamaha Endurance Moto 38 in third place in the championship standings, with the head of the table only a good result away. The Austrians have finished in fourth place in the points at the last two rounds, and will be looking to build on that success. Yamaha Phase One Endurance also benefited from their trip to Suzuka, moving from the lower reaches of the table to within site of the top ten, and perhaps more importantly raising the team’s morale after a disappointing start to the season.

Seventy Five Points Still Available

With fifty points available to the winner at the next round of the championship – the Oschersleben 24 hours – and twenty five more points to be won at the Vallelunga 200, the championship looks unlikely to be settled before the final round in October. While nine teams have a mathematical chance of winning the championship, it looks set to go down to the wire between Yamaha GMT94 and Suzuki Castrol, with Yamaha Endurance Moto 38 and Yamaha Austria pushing them all the way.

Current World Endurance Championship Point Standings:

1. 94, Yamaha GMT 94, FRA, Yamaha YZF-R1, 99 points
2. 3, Suzuki Castrol Team, FRA, Suzuki GSX-R1000, 85 points
3. 38, Yamaha Endurance Moto 38, FRA, Yamaha YZF-R1, 56 points
4. 7, Yamaha Austria Racing Team, AUT, Yamaha YZF-R1, 51 points
5. 7, Seven Stars Honda, JPN, Honda CBR1000RRW, 38 points
6. 12, Yoshimura Suzuki Jomo Srixon, JPN, Suzuki GSX-R1000, 30 points
7. 8, Kawasaki Bolliger, SUI, Kawasaki ZX-10R, 30 points
8. 4, Suzuki Jet Team, SUI, Suzuki GSX-R1000, 30 points
9. 5, WRT-Honda Austria, AUT, Honda CBR1000RR, 28 points
10. 6, Shell Endurance Academy, GBR, Suzuki GSX-R1000, 23 points
11. 1, Yamaha Phase One Endurance, GBR, Yamaha YZF-R1, 22 points

I am Mr. Wang Qin credit officer (International Banking & Investment Sector) of the Hang Seng Bank Ltd. I have a concealed business suggestion for you. The Hang Seng Bank Ltd is one of Hong Kong’s top three commercial banks. It was established in 1961 by a consortium of five international banks to take over the banking business carried on in Hong Kong since 1949 by the British and French Bank Limited. Banks, finances, stocks, bonds, shares, houses, merchants, businesses, and investments.

Before the U.S and Iraqi war, our client General Ibrahim Moussa who was with the Iraqi forces and also businessman made a numbered fixed deposit for 18 calendar months, with a value of Twenty Five Millions Five Hundred Thousand United State Dollars only in my branch. Upon maturity several notice was sent to him, even before the war. Again after the war another notification was sent and still no response came from him. We later found out that the General and his family had been killed during the war in bomb blast that hit their home.

After further investigation it was also discovered that Gen. Ibrahim Moussa did not declare any next of kin in his official papers including the paper work of his bank deposit. And he also confided in me the last time he was at my office that no one outside the Bank institution knew of his deposit with my bank. So, Twenty Five Millions Five Hundred Thousand United State Dollars is still lying in my bank and no one has ever come forward to claim it.

What bothers me most is that according to the laws of my country at the expiration 3 years the funds will revert to the ownership of the Hong Kong Government if nobody applies to claim the funds.

Against this backdrop, I wish to present you as a foreigner to stand as the next of kin to Gen.Ibrahim Moussa so that the funds he deposited in our Bank will be transferred to your Bank Account as his next of Kin.

Updated Post: Yet More Press Releases From Mid-Ohio

0

From a press release issued by GP Tech:

Formula Extreme
Round 9
July 24, 2004
Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Lexington, Ohio

Ty Howard and GPtech had a successful race weekend with a 6th place finish in FX class.

Using Tues and Wed WERA events as a warm-up to the weekend,
Ty Howard rode a flawless race coming from the last position on the grid to finish 6th in the AMA FX class.

Everything looked as if Ty was going to start from no further back than the second row up until qualifying. During qualifying the team ran into a handling problem that could not be solved on pit road. The team just made the last available spot on the grid by the sheer determination and skill of Howard’s riding.

Marcus McBain of RPS suspension (Traxxion Dynamics action center) found the problem after qualifying and together with GPtech was able to resolve the handling troubles. Saturday morning warm-up confirmed that the problem had been solved. Now the handling was sorted it was time to focus on power delivery – Dick Swarez at Full Spectrum Racing Engine Services built the perfect engine for the job.

As Ty was gridded for the finale everyone on the team realized it was going to be a real nail biter. Nobody could have predicted the determination Ty had inside himself. During the race Ty charged hard right from the start and never looked back. Practically every lap Ty was passing multiple riders. By the time Ty was able to challenge for 5th the tires (understandably) would take no more. Ty rode an absolutely incredible race. Determined, smooth, and calculated are words best describing his style to grab 6th place.

HMC RACING: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

HMC Ducati Milwaukee Racing – July 28, 2004

The Good:
Oh what a weekend! The course was lined with raving fans and Team HMC Ducati Milwaukee Racing, the factory-backed Formula Xtreme 749R race team for Ducati Motor Holding S.p.A. (NYSE: DMH, Borsa Italiana S.p.A.: DMH), qualified a strong P5 on the second row for Saturday’s race.

After weeks of fuel mapping issues that reduced the race bike’s power, it got straighten out and the 749R was back in the hunt. Continuing to work on the setup, the team cut a half a second off their qualifying time during the morning practice before the race.

Off the line, Doug Chandler got an excellent start, leaped past two racers, and slotted into third place by the first turn. During the race the 749R was consistently meeting its horsepower potential and looking very racey.

The Bad:
With just a handful of laps to go, Doug was running a strong second when he thought he felt a loose peg. A few turns later he determined that it was actually oil on the peg, a very serious issue. Concerned that he needed to bring the race bike home in one piece, he began to lower the pace and run conservatively.

With Chandler’s reduced pace, the Suzuki-mounted Jason Pridmore was able to reel him in, taking second for himself.

The Ugly:
With just four laps to the checkered flag, the HMC Ducati Milwaukee race bike was smoking considerably. Doug decided to pull in to ensure that he didn’t oil down the track and create a dangerous situation for all of the competitors.

It was determined that an inexpensive oil seal lead to Chandler’s retirement. The agony of defeat was present after the race and still lingers days after the race. Racing can be heartbreaking.

Team HMC Ducati Milwaukee is taking the summer break to reload and get ready for the final two rounds. With luck and hard work Chandler could well prove a man to be reckoned with as the season resumes on Sept. 3.

Founded in 1926, Ducati builds racing-inspired motorcycles characterized by unique engine features, innovative design, advanced engineering and overall technical excellence.

The Doug Chandler 749R Replica Race Bike kits are available through team owner Mitch Hansen. Hansen has the engine, seat, chassis, and suspension upgrades to make your awesome 749R race bike into a mind blowing, fire breathing, racer replica. Contact Mitch Hansen at 262-284-2725.

More, from a press release issued by Joe Rocket:

Rocket Racers rumble Mid Ohio!

In a weekend marred with red flags, rain delays, and unfortunate crashes, the record number of fans in attendance at Mid Ohio, were once again treated to the high flyin’ styles of the Rocket Racing Team.

The doubleheader format of the AMA Superbike Championship weekend spread the excitement over Saturday and Sunday. Superbike race #1 saw 4-time AMA Superbike Champion Mat Mladin slice and dice with Miguel Duhamel. Mladin took the checker flag with Duhamel right on his heels to take second place. Superbike race #2 seemed to provide the perfect outlet for Jake Zemke to vent the frustration of his crash in an earlier Formula Xtreme event. Taking the holeshot, Jake never looked back as he decimated the field to win the race by a whopping 12 seconds. Ben Bostrom joined Jake on the podium and Mat Mladin. Miguel Duhamel uncharacteristically crashed out of the same race during its closing stages. Miguel was unhurt in the crash but unfortunately was unable to complete the race.

Fan favorite and Factory Kawasaki rider Roger Lee Hayden prevailed after the 600 Supersport race was restarted three times. Fellow Rocket Racer and rising star Ben Spies lead the race earlier on but was forced to settle for second place after hounding Roger Lee all the way to the finish line. Spies also rode his American Suzuki GSXR1000 to second place in the AMA Superstock battle, which was also red flagged and restarted three times.

American Honda ace Miguel Duhamel raced that much closer to the Formula Xtreme Championship, winning Saturday’s FX race in his own typical fashion. Erion Honda rider Jake Zemke was making Miguel earn every lap place until he had an off track excursion into the Mid Ohio green grass.

The entire Rocket Racing Team will have a month’s time to rest before they resume the fight at Road Atlanta, September 4-5.

More, from a press release issued by The Familie:

JAKE ZEMKE CONTINUES TO RIDE LIKE A VETERAN, WINNING HIS SECOND SUPERBIKE RACE AT MID-OHIO

Carlsbad, CA – Rookie Superbike Rider Jake Zemke certainly didn’t look like a newcomer at the ninth stop of the AMA Chevrolet Superbike Series. Racing at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, Jake Zemke took to his second win for the season, July 24, 2004.

Zemke took the holeshot from the pole and never looked back. By the end of the twenty six lap race Zemke had opened his lead to 12.723 seconds. Following his win this weekend, Zemke has closed in on the championship title, trailing leader Matt Mladin by only 11 points.

Zemke has had an impressive season, surprising many industry insiders. Zemke approached the season with the goal winning the season, despite being a newcomer to the sport. Zemke preceded his Superbike season with top finishes in the 600 and Formula Xtreme.

The series will resume racing September 3 -5th in Atlanta, Georgia. With another impressive finish, Zemke could easily take over top position in the race for the title.

More, from a press release issued by Buell:

BARNES FOILED BY MECHANICAL IN FORMULA XTREME AT MID-OHIO
Buell Rider on Pace for Season Best Performance until Engine Problem Ended Run

LEXINGTON, Ohio – Kosco Buell/Innovative Motorcycle Research rider Michael Barnes battled for a podium position and a season best performance aboard his Buell Firebolt at the AMA Lockhart Phillips Formula Xtreme race held at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course but was thwarted by a mechanical problem that forced him out of the race.

Barnes qualified eighth for the event, among the ever deepening field of solid Formula Xtreme entries. A great start moved Barnes up to fourth position by the end of the first lap, where he battled for a podium position with a pack that included Yamaha rider Larry Pegram, Suzuki racers Jason Pridmore and Vincent Haskovec, and Ducati-mounted Doug Chandler. Barnes was in fifth place on lap 12 of the 16-lap event, when he experienced an engine problem that ended his race. The race was won by American Honda factory rider Miguel Duhamel, who also leads the series in season points.

The Hal’s Performance Advantage team, which has also been contesting the AMA Formula Xtreme series with a Buell Firebolt, skipped the Mid-Ohio round to let rider Mike Ciccotto recover from injuries suffered in a super-moto training accident. The Hal’s team plans to be back in action at the next Formula Xtreme event.

“Michael put in a great ride,” said Erik Buell, chairman and chief technical officer at Buell Motorcycle Company. “These Buell dealer teams are going through a big learning year, as they have not competed at this level before, and the bikes are still under development. But each race they get stronger, and they definitely have respect now. The AMA is right on target with Formula Extreme. The class is really exciting. It’s the class with the most brands able to participate, and the rules structure appears to have created a fair playing field. We hope to see the entry list and the mix of machinery continue to grow at every event.”

AMA Formula Xtreme is a class open to highly-modified motorcycles with 600cc four-cylinder engines or larger-displacement V-Twin engines. The next stop on the 2004 AMA Chevrolet Superbike Championship schedule is Sept. 3-5 at Road Atlanta near Braselton, Ga.

All About The ‘Hats Off’ Emergency Helmet Removal System AMA Pro Racing Wants To Require All Riders To Use In 2005

0

Copyright 2004, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.

In its 2005 rules proposal, AMA Pro Racing issued a new requirement, that “all helmets used by riders in on-track activities would be required to be equipped with a commercially-manufactured emergency helmet removal device such as the Hats Off® device or the Arai helmet removal device.” But what is “Hats Off?”

Hats Off is a trademarked and patented emergency helmet removal device which is designed to allow quicker and safer helmet removal, with less discomfort to the wearer but more importantly less risk of causing or furthering cervical spinal damage.

Personal experience led to the invention of Hats Off by motorcyclist John Deagan, of Long Grove, Illinois. “I was in a motorcycle wreck some years ago (1985),” the 66-year-old retired salesman told Roadracingworld.com. “I was T-boned at about 35 mph and went over the handlebars. I came in (to the ground) just like an arrow (head-first).

“Luckily, I was wearing a full-face helmet, which saved my life. The paramedics got there and wanted to get to an airway, of course, so the first thing they did was yank the helmet. They didn’t even take my glasses off first, so I don’t think their training level was all that great.

“But when they took off the helmet it was an extremely painful thing. I thought my head was going to stay in the helmet. As they pulled it off, I realized there’s got to be a better way to do this. The only alternative to pulling it off is pushing it off, and you have to do that from the inside.”

Deagan’s Hats Off system is quite simple. A folded-up polyethylene bladder is inserted into the top of any helmet, between the shell and the padded liner preferably, or below non-removable padded liners and a new crown pad, which is included with the kit.

The bladder does not have to be centered perfectly on top of the head to be fully effective, according to Deagan, and therefore can be positioned so as not to interfere with the helmet’s ventilation channels.

An inflation tube is run behind the padding down to the bottom rim of the helmet, where a sticker on the outside of the helmet alerts safety crews to its existence and location.

First responders to the scene – who need to be trained to use the system effectively – immobilize the victim’s head and neck, remove their eyeglasses, unbuckle the chin strap, attach a hand air pump (like those used with common blood pressure testers) to the inflation tube and start pumping the bladder full of air. As the bladder inflates, the helmet is quickly and gently pushed (with help from safety workers) above the victim’s nose and ears with little trauma to the head and/or neck.

The bladders are reusable for training purposes, but it is recommended by Deagan that the bladder be replaced after a true extrication.

Another system, the “First Response” kit, allows medical personnel to slide the bladder into the top of a victim’s helmet with a flexible piece of plastic “with some degree of difficult, I must admit,” said Deagan. “This is much better than nothing.

“We’ve got a number of rescues in the United States, several in IRL racing, and in Great Britain, with civilian (motorcycle) wrecks on the road,” continued Deagan. “We’re imperfect. We’re a small company, but we’re really doing our best to make a difference.”

Hats Off is currently mandatory for all racers in the American Speed Association (ASA) and Indy Racing League (IRL), strongly recommended in Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) and NASCAR, endorsed by the Snell Memorial Foundation, recommended by the FIA and widely used by both racetrack and civilian medical personnel in England.

AMA Pro Racing has proposed mandatory use of Hats Off, or similar helmet removal devices, for all of its motorcycle racing disciplines for 2005.

Currently, Deagan is the sole U.S. distributor of the Hats Off Helmet kits ($34.00) and the First Response kits (approximately $20.00), from his home office in Illinois.

To order the Hats Off systems or for additional information (including a training video), call John Deagan at (847) 438-7142, FAX (847) 438-8404, e-mail [email protected] or go to www.hatsoff.info.

CCS Florida Experimenting With Unmuffled Racebikes

0

Copyright 2004, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.

CCS Florida is experimenting with running unmuffled racebikes at its events at Moroso Motorsports Park and at Miami-Homestead Speedway.

The experiment is the idea of CCS Florida promoter (and former racer) Henry DeGouw, who was inspired by crowd reaction to unmuffled MotoGP bikes at a World Championship Grand Prix DeGouw recently attended.

Last weekend at Moroso, three riders tried running without mufflers in practice on Saturday, although only Marco Martinez ran without a muffler in Sunday’s races.

“The crowd loved the sound,” said DeGouw afterwards. “I saw people run to the fences to see what was coming down the track as they approached. Everyone I spoke to after hearing the bikes on the track thought it was a good idea. I must say that before they heard it, some thought I was nuts!

“The riders who opted to go back to mufflers, said they needed to put extensions on to get the end of the pipe farther back. It was too loud for them but they are going to run with open pipes (after extending them) as it did not affect the way the bikes ran,” DeGouw added.

CCS Florida returns to Moroso on August 28-29.

Honda Previews The World Supersport Event At Brands Hatch

0

From a press release issued by Honda Racing Information:

BRANDS HATCH BECKONS HONDA SUPERSPORT MAESTROS

After six free weekends, with no World Supersport races having taken place since Silverstone on 13 June 2004, the series reconvenes in England once more, at the natural amphitheatre of Brands Hatch. Most of the strong entry of supported Honda CBR600RR riders will enter the round in enviable championship positions, with the Ten Kate Honda riders Karl Muggeridge and Broc Parkes the best placed, in first and third places overall.

Muggeridge has had an outstanding run of recent form, with three wins and a second place his personal tally in the last four outings. He leads the championship with a healthy 107 points to Yamaha rider Jurgen van den Goorbergh’s 92. For Parkes, with three straight podium finishes under his belt and some encouraging results from a recent Oschersleben test session alongside team-mate Muggeridge, third place is his current status, on a total of 69 points. His closest competitor Kevin Curtain is adrift by 11 points.

With six full-time WSS competitors supported by Honda in 2004, the importance of the championship should not be underestimated, and in the Klaffi team Honda has a potent force to take on the competition in this intense and ever combative class. Experienced WSS rider Sebastien Charpentier leads the Klaffi charge in seventh place in the table, but he is well supported by the 20-year-old talent of Germany’s Max Neukirchner (Klaffi Honda CBR600RR) who has been an impressive inductee from the 250cc Euro championships, lying tenth overall so far.

Team Italia Megabike Honda regular riders Alessio Corradi (Team Italia Megabike Honda CBR600RR) and Denis Sacchetti will be joined by Aussie Anthony West, a major name in the MotoGP two stroke firmament, who is taking advantage of an offer to compete at Brands for the Italian-based team. The 23-year-old Australian will add extra spice to what is already a red-hot line up of talent in what is one of the toughest forms of Motorsport around.

Points leader Muggeridge has enjoyed his summer break, and is typically laid back in mood in readiness for the latest challenge. “We tested recently at Oschersleben and it all went very well; mostly chassis things for two days and then some tyre tests in the last hours. We did well against our main opposition and that’s a positive going into Brands. I did some climbing in Switzerland during the break, and otherwise I’ve just been training to keep fit for Brands.”

For Parkes the recent test session should have a far-reaching significance. “I was at the Ten Kate workshop for a few days during the break, and we had a good test as well. We haven’t tested this year other than Valencia and one windy day at Assen, so it was just what we needed. Before this test even though I understood the way the team works we did not really connect together perfectly. Now I feel we do and I’m learning a lot more from them. At the last test we all worked very well together and I feel it will show. Brands isn’t my favourite circuit but I have never really been there with a good bike, so I think it should be OK.”

Charpentier is positive about his second run out on English tarmac this year; “I’ve had some good results at Brands before, so I hope to repeat them. I want to get a podium in this race and it helps there are not such big jumps in the settings of the bike when going from a track like Silverstone to Brands Hatch. I have my goals very clear in my head for this weekend, and feel under no pressure at all.”

Neukirchner, who was a spectator at the Sachsenring MotoGP race, feels ready for his first taste of MotoGP action. “I haven’t done so much in the break but I have trained a lot and I will be in good shape for the race itself,” said Max. “Brands Hatch will be another new track for me but I like learning new tracks and have an experienced team behind me. I have heard a lot about Brands Hatch so I want to see it for myself.”

Three days of WSS action culminate in the race itself at Brands on August 1, with the next round of the championship at Assen on September 5.

The Hang Seng Bank Ltd is one of Hong Kong’s top three commercial banks.

Updated Post: Yet More Press Releases From Mid-Ohio
