LRRS Racer Bryan Paquette Killed At Loudon

Racer Bryan Paquette was killed Friday at New Hampshire International Raceway, during an LRRS race weekend.

According to Paquette’s long-time friend Eric Wood, Paquette crashed when his motorcycle lost its front brake pads and he ran into the tire wall in front of the barrier outside turn three.

Wood said that Paquette was a former AMA Pro Superbike racer making a return to road racing, running in a class for riders over age 40, for fun. Paquette, who had been participating in track days at Loudon, was married and had three children, Wood said.

Paquette often worked as a member of the Dunlop tire fitting crew at AMA Nationals, Wood said.

Further details will be posted as they become available.

Disappointing opener for FPR at Laguna

Foggy PETRONAS Racing riders Troy Corser and Chris Walker endured a disappointing first race of the seventh round of the Superbike World Championship at Laguna Seca today.

The omens were ominous when Chris’s first bike suffered an engine problem on his formation lap and the spare bike had to be wheeled onto the grid. He was running in 12th spot when, with two laps remaining, he was lucky to avoid a crash on the fast downhill section of the Californian circuit when further engine problems forced him to retire.

Troy Corser, starting from fifth on the grid, finished in 10th. He said: “I was losing too much acceleration on Sanchini and Haslam in front of me, who were pulling away out of the corners. I used the harder tyre compound but will consider trying a softer compound for the second race, although the difference in lap times between me and the riders in front remained pretty constant.”

Chris said: “I don’t deserve the luck I am having at the moment. I think the only reason I didn’t crash was because there was so much oil that the bike didn’t grip and I was able to use the camber to stay on. I was stuck behind Borciani for the whole race.”

MLADIN EXTENDS AMERICAN SUPERBIKE POINTS LEAD AFTER SECOND PLACE FINISH AT LAGUNA SECA

Monterey, California, USA (Sunday, July 11) – An action packed twelfth round of the American AMA Chevrolet Superbike Championship has seen Australian Mat Mladin extend his standing at the top of the series after finishing second in today’s round.

The result could have been one better for the four times and defending series champion if not for an incident midway through the 28-lap Superbike National which resulted in officials stopping the race as the field was on lap seventeen and Mladin holding the race lead.

Fourth from the restart, Mladin worked his way up to second and with two laps to run made a bold challenge to race leader Ben Bostrom, trimming a second out of the margin, but the charge went unrewarded as he trailed Bostrom across the finish line by 0.630 of a second.

The points that he earned for second, along with the additional point for leading the most number of laps during the race has allowed Mladin to extend his lead in the championship to ten, from Miguel DuHamel (391 – 381) who passed Mladin’s Yoshimura Suzuki teammate Aaron Yates with two laps to run to claim the final podium position, 3.3 seconds in arrears to Mladin. Jake Zemke (372) continues to hold third place on the point’s table, but with an increased margin after finishing seventh today.

Starting from the front row of the grid after recording the third fastest time during yesterday’s qualifying session, Mladin was determined to make the most of today’s race and take out as much of an advantage over his rivals DuHamel and Zemke as possible. The morning’s free practice session showed that Mladin was the fastest rider on the circuit in race set up.

“The red flag didn’t do us any favours that’s for sure, as the bike was starting to feel good at that stage of the race and I felt like we could really get going,” said Mladin. “You can’t be upset about the red flag though. A guy crashed and there was fluid on the track, so they did the right thing in stopping the race and clearing it up.”

“The bike felt very good and I was feeling very confident. It’s the best bike I’ve had around here with the way it works over a longer period of time.”

“I got off the line a little slower in the restart as I didn’t want to damage the clutch and just make sure that we got away. From there, I got held up a little behind Miguel and then Aaron and by the time I got past them Ben got a little bit of a gap, we closed that down a little, but just needed a few more laps. That was OK though as it was nice to get some extra points on Miguel in the championship.”

The American AMA Chevrolet Superbike Championship heads to the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course for round thirteen of the championship on the weekend of July 24 – 25. Mladin, along with a number of the other leading teams in the series tested at the circuit less than two weeks ago, with Mladin posting the fastest time of the two day test.

BOSTROM GAINS VALUABLE POINTS AT LAGUNA SECA

Monterey (California) – July 11, 2004: Eric Bostrom gained valuable points at Laguna Seca Raceway with a fifth place finish aboard his Ducati 999R to maintain his fourth overall standing in the AMA Superbike series.

After a weekend marked by lack of track time for the 27-year-old from Las Vegas, Nevada, Bostrom struggled to find a comfortable set-up for the technical track.

“The track time this weekend was real short,” said the Parts Unlimited Ducati Austin rider. “Having never tested here I never really got quite comfortable. I qualified poorly but this morning we were quick again and the times were competitive. I thought that if we could run those times in the morning we’d be able to go out there and run mid to low 26s in the race and we’d be right there, but it didn’t happen. I was out there pushing hard into the corners but the lap times never came.”

The race was red-flagged just past half distance due to a crash.

“We put a new rear tire on after the red flag and we ran a bit quicker but not nearly as fast as we did this morning. It wasn’t where we needed to be, but it was better,” added the 27-year-old from Las Vegas, Nevada.

“We really did suffer from not having enough testing time here,” explained Tom Bodenbach. “We’re still learning a lot and although we would’ve preferred a better finish, we’re still glad to get the points. Now it’s time to focus on the next round.”

Mid-Ohio hosts round 9 (races 13 and 14) of the AMA Superbike Championship at Lexington, Ohio on July 23-25.

VERMEULEN AND HONDA DOUBLE UP AT TENTH LAGUNA SBK RACE

TEN BY TEN: The tenth anniversary of the joint AMA and SBK World Championship event at Laguna Seca delivered some outstanding racing in the high temperatures of a sizzling Californian afternoon. Among many landmarks passed today was a new record number of SBK race starts for Pierfrancesco Chili, who has now ridden in 230 races, beating Aaron Slight’s record in the process. The races themselves were both won by Ten Kate Honda CBR1000RR rider Chris Vermeulen, who has now taken the last three SBK race wins in a row.

RACE ONE: Noriyuki Haga (Renegade Ducati 999RS) was forced to start from pitlane, ruling himself out of any chance of a podium finish but there were five others who looked like they could take a top three score. Chris Vermeulen (Ten Kate Honda) was the eventual victor, taking the win from Pierfrancesco Chili (PSG-1 Ducati 998RS) by 4.127 seconds. James Toseland (Ducati Fila 999 F04) had a great run at the front but had to settle for fourth place after a huge fight with his team-mate Regis Laconi. Steve Martin (DFX Ducati) broke his recent run of bad luck to finish a popular third.

RACE TWO: Chris Vermeulen, shadowed throughout by the chasing James Toseland, took his second win of the day, squeezing his Honda ahead at the flag by a mere 0.465 seconds. The fight for third place was no less frantic, as Regis Laconi and Noriyuki Haga went through an epic battle right to the flag, with Laconi edging out the Japanese rider, who had started the race from the fourth row.

POINTS TO PROVE: The dynamics of the World Championship battle changed once more, as the leading Ducati duo swapped places in the table, with Toseland now leading by 201 points to Laconi’s 198. Vermeulen, thanks to a whopping 50 points earned today, is third on 187, only 14 points off the lead. Haga is fourth on 162, with Chili shadowing on 160.

OFF PISTE: The battle for the off podium places was as frantic as the ones for silverware, with Chili fifth in race two. Steve Martin could not repeat his race one success and finished a distant sixth, still ahead of Garry McCoy (Xerox Ducati 999RS) who took a brace of seventh places.
Top Kawasaki rider was Mauro Sanchini, who took his Bertocchi ZX-10 to 11th and ninth.

PETRONAS STRUGGLE: The Foggy Petronas FP-1 team, of Troy Corser and Chris Walker had only one point scoring finished after a tough weekend in Laguna. Corser’s tenth in race one was a poor reward for a rider on the second row after Superpole. Walker had two DNFs, and Corser had to limp back to the pits, after his machine malfunctioned in the second 28-lap race.

Brands Hatch is the venue for round eight of the World Superbike Championship, on August 1, where Supersport and Superstock classes will be in attendance once more.

Treble trouble for FPR at Laguna Seca

The mid-season blues continued for Foggy PETRONAS Racing today with three retirements in two trouble-strewn races in the seventh round of the Superbike World Championship at the American circuit of Laguna Seca.

Troy Corser’s 10th place in the opener was the only finish for the team after both he and team-mate Chris Walker were forced to pull into the pits with technical problems in the second race.

Troy said: “This has been a very frustrating and disappointing weekend, especially considering I was reasonably happy with my set-up and race tyres. In the second race the bike was okay for a few laps but then I started to lose the rear going into the right-handers. But I was right on the back of Clementi and the track was busy so I did not get a chance to look down until Sanchini came passed. There was too much oil on the bike and I knew I wouldn’t be able to finish and I didn’t want to crash like I did in Germany.”

Walker’s day of woe started when, after an engine problem on the formation lap of the first race, he narrowly escaped crashing with two laps remaining when a gearbox problem caused an oil leakage. His day went from bad to worse when a clutch failure brought an end to his second race after eight laps.

Chris, riding with three fractured ribs after a trouble-strewn previous outing at Silverstone, said: “I don’t deserve the luck I am having at the moment, especially at a time in the championship when you need as many points as you can get. It’s a shame that, having struggled in qualifying, I wasn’t able to finish either race after being up near the top ten. I didn’t get my normal start in the second race as the clutch didn’t release properly. I was pushing the lever out with my finger for a while but it got gradually worse.”

Both races were won by Australian Chris Vermeulen, at his first visit to the technically demanding Californian circuit.

Race two results, Superbike World Championship, round 7, Laguna Seca, USA: 1 Vermeulen; 2 Toseland +0.465; 3 Laconi +13.520; 4 Haga +13.742; 5 Chili +21.770; 6 Martin +27.964; 7 McCoy +43.631; 8 Borciani +48.268; 9 Sanchini +49.327; 10 Clementi +54.021; 11 Pedercini +1:09.618; 12 Bontempi +1:24.444; 13 Nowland one lap; 14 Saiger one lap

Grip problems for Garry McCoy, only seventh at Laguna races

Dramatic grip problems after a third of race distance ruined today races of Garry McCoy on the demanding Laguna Seca circuit. The Australian rider, after a good start in both the races, has lost the pace for grip problems and has been able just to finish the races, looking to earn the most of World Championship points.

“I was quite happy this morning after the warm up session.” – confessed a disappointed Garry McCoy at the end of the day. “Then during the races we had unattended grip problems, either during race-1 as during race-2, problems that we hadn’t during all the week end and that we’ve not been able to solve quickly. In both the legs I had a very good start, I was running with the leaders for 8-10 laps, but late the bike started to slide all around the track and I wasn’t able to manage the throttle as I’m used to. So I’ve been not able to contest the attack of Haga in race-1 and of Haslam in race-2, I could just try to finish the race without bigger problems.”

Bad day for Miguel Praia too: forced to miss race-1 because a broken new engine, installed this morning, during morning’s warm up session, during race-2 joined the pit after a few laps because an oil waste from a lubrication pipe of the second engine.

Hacking Will Not Attempt To Race Supersport At Laguna Seca

Graves Yamaha’s Jamie Hacking, who raced to an amazing sixth-place finish in Saturday’s AMA Superstock race in spite of riding with a freshly-plated 11-day-old broken collarbone, will not attempt to race in Supersport Sunday at Laguna Seca.

Factory Yamaha Team Manager Tom Halverson told Roadracingworld.com earlier in the weekend that due to the weekend’s unique schedule Hacking could wait until the Superstock race was over before deciding if he would qualify or race in Supersport.

But after his crash in Superstock qualifying and his amazing but draining performance in the 17-lap Superstock final, which helped him retain his Superstock Championship point lead, Hacking decided to not race in Supersport.

“I can’t. I just can’t,” said Hacking, the defending AMA Supersport Champion, in his motorhome moments after the Superstock race. “This was hard for me. That was all I had right there. It’s hard to let that thing (Supersport number one plate) go off my bike, but the Superstock class is my focus now.”

Coming into the Laguna Seca event, Hacking was third in the AMA Supersport Championship point standings, 36 points behind leader Tommy Hayden.

AMA Supersport Win At Laguna Seca Goes To Roger Lee Hayden

Kawasaki’s Roger Lee Hayden won his second AMA Supersport of the season, and the second of his career, Sunday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Hayden took the lead on lap 10 of 17 when then-leader Aaron Gobert crashed his factory Yamaha YZF-R6 in the final corner. Gobert tried to re-mount and continue on his Yamaha but could not.

Hayden inherited a seven-second lead over Jason DiSalvo, which he maintained well to the checkered flag. DiSalvo took second.

The seat pad on Tommy Hayden’s Kawasaki ZX-6RR came loose mid-race, but it didn’t keep him from passing Yoshimura Suzuki’s Ben Spies for the final podium position three laps from the end.

Tommy Hayden’s Supersport Championship lead is now 18 points – where it had been 31 – over his younger brother Roger Lee Hayden.

Spies finished fourth, ahead of Corona Extra Suzuki’s Ben Attard, Team Valvoline EMGO Suzuki’s Steve Rapp and Attack Kawasaki’s Tony Meiring.

Some distance back, Championsonline.com’s Michael Barnes took eighth, Rapp’s teammate Chris Peris finished ninth and privateer Jason Perez placed 10th.

Damon Buckmaster, in his first race back since suffering a broken hand/wrist in May, finished 11th.

AMA Formula Xtreme Race At Laguna Seca Red-flagged For Possible Oil On Track

The AMA Formula Xtreme race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was red-flagged on lap nine of 17 after Erion Honda’s Jake Zemke started smoking badly on lap nine and Zemke pulled off the track.

Zemke had a 5.8-second lead at the time his bike started smoking.

Miguel Duhamel and Ben Bostrom had been racing for second, but Duhamel was slowed by a broken shifter, which allowed Bostrom to move into second place.

Team Valvoline EMGO Suzuki’s Vincent Haskovec was leading a tight group racing for fourth, consisting of Alex Gobert, Jason Pridmore and Doug Chandler.

Just before course control called for a red flag, Ben Bostrom came by the pits and made a hand signal to his crew.

During the red flag delay, Zemke’s and Duhamel’s crews were seen working on their motorcycles.

Both Duhamel and Zemke took the restart, but Zemke did so from the back of the grid, because he officially caused the red flag.

The restart wasn’t called until after Zemke’s crew had found and fixed an oil leak.

In the past, AMA Pro Racing’s Ron Barrick has said that he will delay restarts to allow crews to make bike repairs.

LRRS Racer Bryan Paquette Killed At Loudon

Copyright 2004, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.

Copyright 2004, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.

AMA Formula Xtreme Running Order (at the time of the red flag):

1. Jake Zemke, Honda
2. Ben Bostrom, Honda
3. Miguel Duhamel, Honda
4. Vincent Haskovec, Suzuki

10. Danny Eslick, Suzuki
