No MotoGP At Barber Motorsports Park In 2005

From a press release issued by Zoom Motorsports:

BARBER MOTORSPORTS PARK WILL NOT HOST A MOTO GP FOR 2005

(Birmingham, AL)- Zoom Motorsports, the exclusive event promoter for the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama, announced today that Birmingham will not be the site of the United States Grand Prix in 2005. Gene Hallman, President and CEO of Zoom, notified Moto GP rights holder Dorna this week that the Barber Motorsports Park should no longer be considered for a 2005 date. “Dorna has been very patient with us. We have worked together for months trying to finalize a 2005 Moto GP for the Barber Motorsports Park,” said Hallman. “We will continue to work on a possible future Moto GP for the Barber Motorsports Park.”

Many considered the Barber Motorsports Park the premier site to host a Grand Prix in the United States. Moto GP attracts millions of spectators to its events annually and reaches hundreds of millions of viewers in more than 200 countries through television broadcasts.

Zoom Motorsports researched other Moto GP events and found that most promoters received public sector funding. Due to the sanctioning fee and race expenses, Zoom Motorsports felt strongly that it needed a certain level of guaranteed public sector funding prior to assuming the financial risk of hosting a Moto GP. “While we had some success in our public sector fund raising efforts, we fell short of our overall goals,” said Hallman. “Public sector funding is projected to represent less than one-third of the overall race revenues. We were requesting the funds come from the economic development and tourism budgets,” added Hallman.

In the interim, Zoom Motorsports will continue to host events that have been held at the Barber Motorsports Park and have proven successful such as the American Motorcycle Association Chevrolet Superbike Championship and the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series for 2005. Zoom is actively pursuing other events for the Barber Motorsports Park. The Convention and Visitors Bureau of Birmingham expects the 2004 economic impact of the Barber Motorsports Park to exceed $100 million.

Picotte On Canadian Superbike, Sportbike Poles At Mosport

0

From a press release issued by series organizers:

BOWMANVILLE, ON Pascal Picotte rewrote the record book at Mosport International Raceway Friday.

The Granby, QC racer claimed pole for the fourth and fifth rounds of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship and established a new track record with a qualifying time of 1:21.282 on his Team Yamaha / Picotte Performance Yamaha YZF-R1.

Picotte, the series points leader after three of eight events, will start from pole position for both Saturday and Sunday’s feature races. Additionally he picked up four championship points for qualifying fastest and won his third $500 MPM Array Superbike Pole Award this season.

“I was pretty confident,” said Picotte, the defending Parts Canada Superbike champion. “I was actually hoping for a [one minute] 20.9 that lap but I was delayed in a couple of places.”

Steve Crevier of Maple Ridge, BC qualified second aboard his DXS Diablo Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000 with a time of 1:22.057 but was penalized 14 positions after his bike ran out of fuel and was unable to complete its mandatory dyno run.

That moved Granby, QC’s Kevin Lacombe up to second with a lap of 1:22.686 riding the Lacombe Racing Yamaha YZF-R1 and Kleinburg, ON rider Frank Trombino improved to third after setting the next fastest time of 1:22.692 on the Brooklin Cycle Yamaha YZF-R1.

Australian Craig Connell completes the front row for this weekend’s races on the Coors Light Racing / Blackfoot Suzuki GSX-R1000. He recorded a lap of 1:22.750.

Crevier held the pole until just past the halfway point of the 45-minute qualifying session, when Picotte unseated him with a lap time of 1:21.744. With 10 minutes remaining Picotte lowered his time to 1:21.493 and on his final lap of the session beat Jordan Szoke’s two-year-old lap record of 1:21.463.

“My guys worked until almost midnight yesterday and the hard work paid off,” Picotte said. “But there’s definitely more to come.”

In other action at Mosport, Picotte also earned pole position for this weekend’s fourth and fifth rounds of the Hindle Exhaust Pro 600 Sport Bike Championship with a time of 1:24.011 on his Yamaha YZF-R6. Kars, ON’s Andrew Nelson took second on his Honda Canada / Fast Company Honda CBR600RR and Crevier qualified third aboard his Suzuki GSX-R600.

The Pro 600 Sport Bike races will also run Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Eric Warren was quickest in practice for this weekend’s International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Amateur 600 Sport Bike event at Mosport. The Richmond Hill, ON rider set a time of 1:28.377 on his Pro 6 Cycle Suzuki GSX-R600. Qualifying for the Amateur 600 class will be held Saturday afternoon with the race set for Sunday.

This weekend’s events will be televised on TSN on Aug. 7 and Sept. 11 at 11:30 a.m. EDT and on Quebec’s RDS on Sept. 12 at 12:00 p.m. and Sept. 25 at 11:30 a.m. The action will also appear in one-hour format later this summer on TORONTO1 and A-Channel stations in Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton.

AMA Pro Racing Previews Superbike Races At Mid-Ohio

0

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

From a press release issued from AMA Pro Racing:

Five former winners slated to race Mid-Ohio’s Honda Super Cycle Weekend

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (July 16, 2004) – Five former Mid-Ohio Superbike winners are slated to take to the track as the AMA Chevrolet Superbike Championship comes to Lexington, Ohio, for the doubleheader Honda Super Cycle Weekend presented by Dunlop Tire on July 23-25. The races are rounds 13 and 14 of the 18-race championship. Defending race winner Mat Mladin, of Yoshimura Suzuki, leads the series holding a 10-point lead over Honda’s Miguel Duhamel. Erion Racing Honda’s rookie factory rider Jake Zemke is a close third in the standings.

Joining Mladin and Duhamel as former Mid-Ohio Superbike winners are Aaron Yates, Eric Bostrom and Pascal Picotte. All five of these AMA Superbike stars have raised the Mid-Ohio Superbike winners’ trophy. Three riders – Mladin, Yates and Doug Chandler – in the 21-year history of Mid-Ohio Superbike racing have won three races at the famous road racing circuit. Mladin, Yates and Duhamel will all vie to become the first four or perhaps five-time Mid-Ohio Superbike winner at the doubleheader.

The series this season has been one of the most competitive in years. Five riders have won this year representing three brands of motorcycles. Mladin not only holds the points lead, but also leads the way with five victories to this point in the series. Duhamel has four wins, while Zemke, Eric and Ben Bostrom have all earned a single win so far this year. Mladin feels good about the upcoming doubleheader after turning in the fastest time in testing at Mid-Ohio a few weeks ago.

“Testing went pretty well for us at Mid-Ohio,” said Mladin, the four-time AMA Superbike champ. “We were pleased with the lap times we were able to put in with race tires. We need a couple of wins. That’s all that will be acceptable.”

In Monterey, Calif., a week and a half ago Mladin and his Yoshimura Suzuki seemed to stem the tide of the fast improving Hondas of Duhamel and Zemke. He looked to have the Laguna Seca race sewn up before a red flag came out and stopped the action. On the restart Mladin moved up and made a serious last-lap bid for the win, but came up just short of former World Superbike star Ben Bostrom.

“The story that hasn’t been told enough is that Honda has a motorcycle that’s suited well to the 2004 AMA Superbike rules,” Mladin claims. “When you get to a track like Mid-Ohio, we’re hoping that hard riding and a good motor bike set up on our Suzuki will allow us to make up in different parts of the race track to have a chance to go for the win. We have a close championship and I need to win some races.”

While the primary story between Duhamel and Mladin is the championship battle, the two have also traded the lead on the all-time AMA Superbike wins this season. Mladin took the honor from Duhamel, who held the title since 1998. Then Duhamel’s mid-season surge gave him back the all-time wins stat. Coming into Mid-Ohio Duhamel has 30 AMA Superbike wins to Mladin’s 29. Those numbers could easily change over the course of the doubleheader weekend.

Additionally, Honda holds the all-time Mid-Ohio Superbike win record with nine victories. Suzuki has eight and if Mladin is successful he could make his manufacturer the all-time wins leader for the Mid-Ohio race.

Making a strong surge at the last round of the series was Ben Bostrom. Bostrom finally earned his first win since returning from a successful three-year run in the World Superbike Series that ended in 2002.

“We’re back and we’re racing again, racing for the win,” said a rejuvenated Bostrom. “I had problems beginning back at Daytona when I had an ear infection. It really affected my balance for a long time. It feels so good to get back on the top of the podium again.”

When asked how he felt about some people losing faith in his riding. “They had every right to,” Bostrom explained. “I’m riding on the best bike on the best team and I should have produced better results than I did. Hopefully everything will turn around now. I’m not racing for the championship so I’m just going out there to win races.”

Bostrom did something former World Superbike standouts Scott Russell, Fred Merkel, Doug Polen and John Kocinski were never able to accomplish and that’s win an AMA Superbike race upon returning to AMA racing after their world championship stints.

Ben’s younger brother Eric won at Mid-Ohio in 2002 and he is hoping to put his Ducati Austin machine atop the podium this year. Bostrom will try to give Ducati only its second win at Mid-Ohio. Doug Polen earned a victory for the Italian maker at Mid-Ohio in 1992.

Ohio fans will be rooting for Baltimore, Ohio native Larry Pegram. Pegram, a former leading flat track racer, is contesting the series on a privateer Yamaha entry sponsored in part by Triangle Cycle. He is ranked 11th in the series and hoping to crack the top-10 with a pair of good finishes at his home race.

Pegram is among a host of privateer riders doing well in AMA Superbike racing this year. Last year’s AMA Superbike Rookie of the Year Geoff May is the leading privateer in the series. The second-year Superbike rider who rides with Team Prieto Racing has strung together a remarkable 11-straight top-10 finishes in the series and is ranked fifth.

Mid-Ohio was the sight of the last privateer win in AMA Superbike racing. Dale Quarterley rode his own Kawasaki to victory in the 1993 race.

Both Mid-Ohio Superbike races will be televised nationally on SPEED Channel on Sunday July 25. Saturday’s race will be shown at 2 p.m. Eastern followed by the live broadcast of Sunday’s final.

Rossi And Gibernau Expect To Battle Each Other Again This Weekend In Germany

0

From a press release issued by MotoGP:

Rossi and Gibernau face-off at Sachsenring

Valentino Rossi and Sete Gibernau sat side by side at the Sachsenring circuit today and agreed that the distance between them could be equally slender when the Veltins Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland reaches its climax after 30 laps on Sunday. One year ago the pair crossed the finish line separated by just 0.060 seconds and they could not be much closer at the top of the MotoGP World Championship, where they are level on 126 points but with Rossi holding the advantage thanks to a greater win ratio. Neither rider was able to add to their tally in the last round at Rio, when they both crashed, lending even more weight to the importance of this weekend, which marks the halfway point of the season.

“It is quite strange because now we are starting from zero and we have nine hard races to get the bike to the maximum level,” commented Rossi, who lost to Gibernau in that epic battle twelve months ago. “Last year I made a stupid mistake in the last corner and I was very angry to lose. In Rio we never found the right setting for the bike but hopefully we can do that here and challenge for the victory again.”

Gibernau is certain that Rossi will again be his main challenger, but revealed his admiration for some of his other rivals in the MotoGP class after getting the rare chance to watch from the sidelines in Brazil. “It is a tight track and it will be a tight race, but it is not just about myself and Valentino this weekend. There are a lot of other riders out there who can win the race, like (Makoto) Tamada, Loris (Capirossi) and Troy (Bayliss). I’ll just try to keep my head down and do my work as best as I can.”

Tamada will be hoping Gibernau is right after his debut win in Rio two weeks ago. It was the first win of the Japanese rider’s career and he admits he would like nothing better than to spring another surprise this weekend. “It was fantastic to win my first race but this is not the time to relax,” commented Tamada. “I want more and there is no reason why I can’t do well at this circuit. Last year wasn’t good for us but we have come a long way since then.”

Capirossi was equally optimistic after making overdue progress with the Ducati in recent weeks, culminating with his best finish of the season in Brazil. The Italian took fourth place there, as he did here one year ago, and he is now looking to take the next important step and join the podium battle. “I think we have made good progress, the new engine we have is very good and I think it should suit this circuit,” commented Capirossi, who saw his team-mate Bayliss take third here one year ago.

A top three finish is a big ask of local hero Alex Hofmann but the rookie is looking forward to performing for a sell-out crowd and continuing towards his target of becoming only the second ever German to win a premier-class race behind Edmund Czihak at the Nürburgring in 1974. “This is a learning experience for me but I feel I am progressing and my realistic aim is a top ten finish this Sunday,” commented the 23 year old. “The people are crazy for MotoGP, for Valentino, Sete and all the other riders and it should be a fantastic weekend.”

Two other men hoping to return to the podium at the Sachsenring were escaping the paddock pressure today, Max Biaggi and Carlos Checa leading a rider line-up in a charity football match against a team of German athletes and celebrities, all in aid of Riders for Health. Fellow MotoGP rider Jeremy McWilliams was also at the core of the team, with star performances by 250cc riders Manuel Poggiali and Randy De Puniet, who had trials to become a professional footballer as a youngster.

De Puniet is under no illusions about his destiny now and says he is ready to wrestle the 250cc World Championship lead back from Dani Pedrosa this weekend despite arriving at the Sachsenring without any luggage. The Frenchman’s suitcase was left behind in transfer at Frankfurt airport but he is confident of better fortunes in Sunday’s race. “I have had bad luck a few times this season so I am used to it,” smiled De Puniet, who lies 11 points behind Pedrosa at the top of the standings. “I had a mechanical breakdown at Mugello and a bad tyre in Rio but I fought for victory here last year and if everything goes well this weekend then I know I can win.”

One man with worse luck than De Puniet this weekend is fellow 250 rider Hector Faubel, who misses out altogether through injuries sustained in a crash in Rio. There are more injury concerns in the 125cc class, with Czech rider Vaclav Bittman set to replace injured home rider Dario Guisepetti and Jorge Lorenzo facing a late fitness check after an operation on his hand, which he also injured in Rio.

However, Czech female rider Marketa Janakova has recovered from concussion sustained in the same race and expects to ride, whilst Swiss youngster Thomas Luthi is set to return after missing three races. Meanwhile, the 125cc race winner here from 2001, Simone Sanna, has been called up to replace Andrea Ballerini. Sanna’s Italian compatriot Andrea Dovizioso still leads the series, with a 16-point advantage over Hector Barberá.

The Granby, QC ace has 151 points to the 136 of Maple Ridge, BC’s Steve Crevier and the 117 of Calgary racer Clint McBain.

Bikers to enjoy legendary Buffalo Chip activities in Speedway’s infield

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 15, 2004) – Daytona International Speedway’s infield will host the Legendary Buffalo Chip’s party – known to bikers as “The Best Party Anywhere” – during 2004 Biketoberfest festivities, Speedway officials announced today.

Picotte Leading As Canadian Superbike Heads To Mosport

From a press release issued by series organizers:

PICOTTE ON A ROLL

BOWMANVILLE, ON Pascal Picotte hits the midway point of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship this weekend riding a wave of momentum.

The defending series champion enters the fourth and fifth rounds of the eight-race tour at Bowmanville, ON’s Mosport International Raceway leading the point standings after a convincing sweep of the doubleheader at Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park two weeks ago. The Granby, QC ace has 151 points to the 136 of Maple Ridge, BC’s Steve Crevier and the 117 of Calgary racer Clint McBain.

Picotte’s two Race City wins aboard the Team Yamaha / Picotte Performance Yamaha YZF-R1 also brought his career total of Canadian Superbike triumphs to 10, tying him with Michael Taylor for sixth place overall. A similar performance at Mosport and he will move into a four-way tie for third all-time with Rueben McMurter, Michel Mercier and Don Munroe on 12 victories.

The career national Superbike wins leader is Crevier, who notched up his 22nd triumph at this season’s Parts Canada Superbike season opener at Shannonville Motorsport Park. The DXS / Diablo Racing Team Suzuki GSX-R1000 rider had a pair of second place finishes in Calgary and has never won at Mosport.

Second on the all-time win list is Brantford, ON’s Jordan Szoke with 14 victories. The Honda Canada / Fast Company Honda CBR1000RR rider is fourth in the 2004 Superbike standings with 96 points and is a two-time Mosport winner.

McBain has yet to win on the national tour but he is knocking on the door and finished a close second to Crevier at the opening round on the Coors Light Racing / Blackfoot Suzuki GSX-R1000.

Other challengers at Mosport this weekend will include Rock Forest, QC rider Francis Martin on the Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-10R, and Kleinburg, ON’s Frank Trombino, who is going for a third career Mosport victory on the Brooklin Cycle Yamaha YZF-R1.

Racing at Mosport this weekend will also include a doubleheader for the Hindle Exhaust Pro 600 Sport Bike Championship. Picotte leads the standings in this class and is the defending series champion.

The International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Amateur 600 Sport Bike Championship will run its third round at Mosport. Despite not having won either of the opening two races Yamaha rider Rudy Raposo of Mississauga, ON leads the point standings.

Qualifying for the Parts Canada Superbike and Hindle Exhaust Pro 600 Sport Bike classes will go Friday afternoon, with races scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. Competitors in the International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Amateur 600 Sport Bike class will qualify Saturday and race Sunday.
