Dunlop Tire Concerns Re-appear At Mont-Tremblant Canadian Superbike Event

Signs indicating a possible tire failure were found on a 17-inch rear Dunlop slick used on the Brooklin Cycles Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike of Frank Trombino during Saturday morning Canadian Superbike practice at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant.

The tire, a 758-compound, or “medium,” with the manufacturing date code of 2204 (indicating manufacture in the 22nd week of 2004) and with approximately 20 laps on it, was found by Trombino’s crew to have a line of cuts diagonally across one section of the tread.

The first cut was approximately a half-inch long and at least a half-inch deep. The second cut, perfectly in line with the first, was also a half-inch long but slightly less deep. Two additional cuts, much shallower but in perfect alignment with the first two, were found on the other side of the tread.

Brooklin Cycles Yamaha Team Owner Rob Egan told Roadracingworld.com, “I’ve seen this before. It’s never caused a problem, but now everyone’s paranoid. We don’t want to take any chances. We knew this track would be punishing with all the high cornering loads.”

Egan said Trombino did not feel the tire doing anything out of the oridnary.

The concern over the unusual damage to the tire comes from three Dunlop 17-inch rear slicks failing within an eight-day period in July, causing Jamie Hacking to crash at Mid-Ohio July 25, and teammates Jeff Williams and Steve Crevier to crash during a Canadian Superbike event July 17-18 at Mosport. All three riders crashed at very high speed but escaped serious injury.

“I haven’t seen the tire yet,” Crevier said of Trombino’s Dunlop. “Hopefully, his is only chunking and not coming apart like mine, Jeff’s and Hacking’s.”

Crevier feels the problem may come from the Mont Tremblant track’s lack of grip and Trombino’s chassis set-up. “I think everyone is sprung pretty tight,” said Crevier. “The suspension is topping out over all these crests causing a lot of tire spin. I’m seeing a lot of spinning out there, and spinning is bad for any tire.”

Pascal Picotte also suffered damage to his rear Dunlop slick, a 950-compound “soft” with three laps on it, during the same session, but the single, three-quarter-inch-long cut on his tire was not believed to be a precursor of a tire failure, according to Picotte’s crew.

Almost all of the top Canadian Superbike riders use Dunlop tires, and no other unusual tire damage has been reported at Mont Tremblant.

Parts Canada Superbike series officials have notified every team of Trombino’s tire damage.

Picotte Takes Canadian Superbike Pole, Breaks Track Record At Mont-Tremblant

Picotte Performance Yamaha’s Pascal Picotte earned pole position for round seven of the Parts Canada Superbike series during qualifying Saturday at Le Circuit Mont Tremblant in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada.

Riding a Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R1, Picotte’s time of 1:38.930 was not only good enough for the first spot on the grid but it was also well under Picotte’s old lap record of 1:40.240.

Picotte did a 1:39.263 (on his race tire) within the first few minutes of the 60-minute qualifying session, before coming into the pits, sitting and waiting for several minutes. When DXS Diablo Suzuki’s Steve Crevier posted a 1:39.328, Picotte mounted a soft-compound rear tire, went back out, recorded his 1:38.390, returned to the pits and sat for the final 20 minutes of the session.

“We waited until the end to go for a lap time in 600cc (Sportbike) qualifying, and it almost didn’t work. We said we wouldn’t do that again, so we tried to do our fast time as soon as possible,” said Picotte.

Crevier’s soft-tire-aided time held up for second on the grid. Honda Canada’s Jordan Szoke qualified third with a 1:40.191, which was also under the old lap record. Completing the front row for Sunday’s 15-lap final was Brooklin Cycles Yamaha’s Kevin Lacombe, who has continued to make chassis improvements to his YZF-R1 throughout the weekend.

PICOTTE CLOSES ON TITLE

MONT-TREMBLANT, QC Pascal Picotte edged closer to his second straight Parts Canada Superbike Championship by claiming pole position for the seventh round at Circuit Mont-Tremblant on Saturday.

The Granby, QC racer shattered his previous track record with a time of 1:38.930 around the 2.65-mile circuit on his Team Yamaha / Picotte Performance Yamaha YZF-R1. The old mark was a 1:40.240.

The performance gave Picotte his fourth MPM Array Pole Award in the Superbike class this year and four more points toward the Parts Canada Superbike title. He now leads the standings with 291 points, 74 more than second place Kevin Lacombe. Lacombe, also from Granby added one point to his total by qualifying fourth for Sunday’s race on the Lacombe Racing/Brooklin Cycle Yamaha YZF-R1 at 1:40.315.

This weekend’s event is the penultimate round in the eight-race Parts Canada Superbike title chase and Picotte can sew up the title if he leaves Mont-Tremblant with a points lead of 56 or greater. A race win is worth 50 points with an additional two points going to the rider who leads the most laps.

“We set a good time right off the bat with our race set up that we are going to use tomorrow and we did a 39.2, so I was pretty satisfied, and then Steve [Crevier] set a 39.3 after that,” Picotte said.”We tried a softer tire to see if it would make a difference, and it did – we picked up a couple of tenths.”

Maple Ridge, BC’s Crevier qualified second for Sunday’s race with a time of 1:39.319 on his DXS Diablo Racing Team Suzuki GSX-R1000 and Jordan Szoke of Brantford, ON placed third at 1:40.191 riding the Honda Canada / Fast Company Honda CBR1000RR.

Szoke is now three points behind Lacombe in third place in the Parts Canada Superbike standings with 214 while Crevier moved up to fourth in points with 171.

In other action at Circuit Mont-Tremblant, Picotte extended his lead in the Hindle Exhaust Pro 600 Sport Bike Championship standings by snatching pole position for Sunday’s race with a time of 1:41.964 on his Yamaha YZF-R6. The effort came in the final minute of the session.

Picotte’s time just edged the Suzuki GSX-R600 of Crevier, who settled for second at 1:41.998. Rock Forest, QC’s Francis Martin will start third after recording a 1:42.278 on his Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-6RR.

Opening round winner Thomas Macsanszky of Richmond Hill, ON grabbed pole for the International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Amateur 600 Sport Bike race at Mont-Tremblant with a time of 1:47.147 on his Yamaha YZF-R6.

Points leader Rudy Raposo of Mississauga, ON placed seventh on his Yamaha at 1:48.745.

Feature races in all three national classes will take place Sunday. Practice starts at 9:00 a.m. with the first race set to go at 12:30 p.m.

This weekend’s event will be televised on TSN on Oct. 10 at 1:00 p.m. EDT and on Quebec’s RDS on Oct. 23 at 2:00 p.m. EDT. The action will also appear in one-hour format this fall on TORONTO1 and A-Channel stations in Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton.

By Beth Wyse

Vesrah Suzuki’s Tray Batey and John Jacobi were back on top in the Dunlop/WERA National Endurance Series Saturday, riding a GSX-R1000 to win a 4-hour race at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway by four laps.

Army of Darkness (AOD) took second overall, with Sam Fleming, Scott Brown and Ben Walters winning in the Mediumweight Superbike class on a Suzuki GSX-R600. Team Velocity Racing completed the podium at third overall, winning in the Heavyweight Superstock class with Chuck Ivey, Bradley Champion, Reuben Frankenfield and Steven Breckenridge on a Yamaha YZF-R1.

Bo Morgan and Derek Keyes gave Dixie Mafia the Lightweight Superbike class win on a Suzuki SV650. The team finished sixth overall and 10 laps ahead of the next Lightweight Superbike team.

Neighbor of the Beast finished a lap down from Dixie Mafia in seventh overall, but the finish gave Melissa Berkoff, Scott Fisher and Chris Pyles the Mediumweight Superstock class win on a Yamaha YZF-R6. The team finished just 41 seconds ahead of second-in-class CherokeeChallenge.net.

At the start of the race, Frankenfield took the lead, but Batey passed him on the second lap and began to pull away. Frankenfield was initially second, and AOD’s Walters trailed in third.

Team Velocity Racing’s lead over AOD lasted until the third hour, when AOD moved ahead and went on to finish one lap ahead.

There were no red flags during the race, despite a nearly full grid of 42 bikes.

Dunlop Tire Concerns Re-appear At Mont-Tremblant Canadian Superbike Event

Copyright 2004, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.

Copyright 2004, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.
