Chris Siebenhaar, Hon CBR600RR, 2:34.815 More, from a press release issued by M4 EMGO Suzuki: HASKOVEC ON FORMULA XTREME FRONT ROW AT INFINEON RACEWAY Team M4 EMGO Suzuki spent much of the opening day of the Infineon Raceway AMA weekend playing catch up. While the majority of their top-level rivals had tested extensively tested at the Sonoma, CA circuit prior to the weekend, Vincent Haskovec, Geoff May, and their crews worked all-out to optimize their set-ups and get up to speed in record time. By the end of the day, their efforts rewarded them with significant progress and the promise of more to come over the next two days. Haskovec put his Pirelli-shod GSX-R600 on the front row for Saturday’s 60k Formula Xtreme race. The Czech Republic native circulated the 2.22-mile race course with a best time of 1:39.514, good enough for fourth overall and a starting position on the outside of row one. “We’re in fourth and not too far back on the charts,” Haskovec said of FX qualifying. “I feel pretty good about the race. Considering that we hadn’t tested here and were pretty lost in the morning while our competitors were basically ready to go, we’re not unhappy with what we accomplished today. We know what direction to go and I think we should be even more competitive in the race on Saturday.” A short time later, Haskovec piloted his Superstock-spec GSX-R1000 to a top-ten performance in qualifying for the premier Superbike class. He ended the day ranked tenth at 1:39.173. Earlier in the day, the squad focused their efforts in the Superstock and Supersport practice sessions in preparation of the Saturday’s qualifying for the classes, and more importantly, Sunday’s finals. May was an impressive sixth best in the Supersport free session aboard his GSX-R600. The Georgian’s 1:40.294 saw him the rank as the fastest Suzuki-mounted rider in the class on Saturday. Geoff also performed admirably on his 1000cc Suzuki GSX-R in the Superstock practice. May led the charge for the team by running eighth fastest overall, with a 1:40.151. Haskovec was a short distance behind, clocking a 1:40.516 to end the session in eleventh. Team M4 EMGO Suzuki should prove even busier on Saturday, with Formula Xtreme and Superbike races, as well as final qualifying for Superstock and Supersport, on the day’s slate.

Track Designer Alan Wilson Named General Manager Of Miller Motorsports Park

Dear Motorsports Enthusiast, I’ve received many e-mails and calls of support from people who are as excited as I am about the development of Miller Motorsports Park. It is very gratifying for me to see the enthusiasm and interest in this project build as people get the word that we really are building a world-class race track right here in Utah. We’ve been moving fast on this project, and we took a significant step forward with a groundbreaking ceremony on April 27, 2005. The cold rain did not seem to dampen any spirits. I even heard one enthusiast say that rain at a groundbreaking is a sign of good luck. I think he made that up on the spot, but it sounds good to me. I am extremely pleased that Alan Wilson, a world-renowned track designer, has accepted the position of General Manager of Miller Motorsports Park. Alan will continue to manage Wilson Motorsport, Inc., his design and consulting business, from Denver for the time being, but he will be spending a greater amount of time in Salt Lake City as we build the track and develop plans. Alan has designed many of the major road courses in the U.S. and overseas. He brings with him vast experience in race operations and tremendous credibility in the motorsports world. Many of you have expressed interest in garage rentals, memberships, being a corner worker, volunteering, etc. We’re working on those plans now. We hope to include as many people as possible – as racers, fans, or volunteers – in Miller Motorsports Park. One of the key elements of this is to bring together racing enthusiasts from all over Utah, the Western U.S., and beyond. Please take a look at our Web site – www.millermotorsportspark.com ~http://www.millermotorsportspark.com/~ – for an overview of the track. First and foremost, this track is for the racers, their friends and families. I hope to see you on the track or out at the park in September. Larry H. Miller

News And Notes From The AMA Superbike Event At Infineon Raceway

0

The 12-turn, 2.22-mile road course at Infineon Raceway remains as it was raced on in 2004, with the exception of a few modifications for safety. Light poles located on rider’s right at the exit of the Carousel, turn six, have been moved approximately 40 feet further away from the racing surface and up a slope. More pavement has been added on rider’s right at the exit of the chicane, but it was not known at post time if this pavement is actually used by riders. Finally, a paved escape road has been added at the turn nine chicane on the motorcycle-only course. A chicane formed with tire walls prevents riders from running through the escape road at speed and gaining an advantage or hitting riders exiting the chicane. Five-time and defending AMA Superbike Champion Mat Mladin is recovering from a cold-like illness. “I shouldn’t have been kissing on Neil (Hodgson) after Fontana,” Mladin joked with Roadracingworld.com Thursday in the paddock. “I’m gonna be 100% tomorrow by 12 o’clock (the scheduled start time of the first AMA Superbike practice. No excuses” American Honda’s Miguel Duhamel and Jake Zemke tested at California Speedway shortly after the AMA race event there, and according to one team member, significant progress was made to the steering and the rear traction of their CBR1000RR Superbikes. Whether those chassis changes will be useful at Infineon Raceway, a completely different style of racetrack than California Speedway, remains to be determined. Duhamel has won five AMA Superbike races at Infineon Raceway. Mladin has won four. Yates, the only other previous winner in the field, won the 1996 AMA Superbike race at what was then known as Sears Point Raceway. The deal that gives computer chip manufacturer Infineon naming rights at Sears Point is a 10-year deal that will continue through the 2011 season. The weather forecast for the Sonoma, California area calls for mild temperatures and no chance of rain during the race weekend. This is significant because AMA Pro Racing does not race at Infineon Raceway in the rain. Texas teen Shea Fouchek is making his AMA debut this weekend on the Safety First Racing team. Fouchek only started racing as an Amateur with the CMRA late in 2004, started the 2005 season as an Amateur, moved up to Expert for one CMRA weekend and, with considerable effort by his team and supporters, was granted an AMA license to race in Formula Xtreme and Supersport this weekend at Infineon Raceway. Fouchek was 25th of 30 in the first Formula Xtreme practice Friday, 6.7 seconds behind pace-setter Jake Zemke. The racing schedule for Sunday has changed, again. Like the schedule at Barber Motorsports Park and unlike the schedule at California Speedway, Supersport will race before Superstock followed by Superbike on Sunday. This means that several riders, including Yoshimura Suzuki’s Aaron Yates, will have to ride Superstock and Superbike back-to-back on the physically-demanding Infineon Raceway course. AMA Pro Racing Superbike Series Manager Ron Barrick told Roadracingworld.com that the daily race schedules are determined by the order that SPEED Channel wants to shoot/broadcast the races.

Rutter Tops Friday’s British Superbike Practice At Mondello Park

0

Scott Smart altered the suspension set-up on his Rizla Suzuki GSX-R1000 in the dying minutes of today’s practice for the fifth round of the British Superbike Championship at Mondello Park and immediately slashed a full second from his lap times. Smart crashed at the super-fast turn three in the morning session and was bruised and battered for the afternoon practice. He finished the final few minutes of the day using a new suspension setting and was getting faster with every lap. He claimed 10th quickest and is confident there is a lot more time to come. James Haydon, standing in for the injured British Superbike Champion John Reynolds, suffered a slow speed off in the afternoon while tyre testing on his Rizla Suzuki. He ended up 16th fastest while still learning the circuit. Honda’s Michael Rutter was fastest. Superbike racing starts at 1:15pm on Sunday, May 15th, at Mondello Park in County Kildare, the Republic of Ireland. Scott Smart: “I lost the front of the bike at turn three this morning while pushing for a fast lap time. It was a case of missing the clean line on the circuit by a few inches and running on to a dusty surface and losing grip. My fingers are bruised and my neck slightly stiff – nothing that will slow me down though. “In the afternoon session we methodically tested tyres and settings. It was only with a few minutes to go that we found a setting that I was comfortable with. It completely transformed the bike and I was a lot faster straight away. If there had been another 10 minutes of track time then we would have been a lot further up the time sheets, but that will come tomorrow.” James Haydon: “Mondello Park is a bumpy track with a lot of turns and I am still learning the fast lines. Tomorrow I will follow another rider or two to see if that gives me some ideas where I can make up time. “I had a slow-speed crash today when I changed into neutral instead of first and ran into the gravel trap and toppled over. I was unhurt and got back on my spare bike straightaway. We have a tyre that we tested at the end and a plan to alter the power delivery via the electronics that should help cut our lap times in qualifying.” Robert Wicks – Team Manager: “Today has been frustrating for both Rizla Suzuki riders. At the end of the day Scott found a big improvement from changing his suspension and James improved his times with a new rear tyre – but both ran out of time to make any impact on the top of the time sheets. Both sessions were dogged by red flag interruptions, making it difficult for James and Scott to maintain their momentum. “Both sides of the Rizla Suzuki garage now have a clear direction to take during qualification and we are aiming for both riders to be competing for first and second row starting positions.” Practice Times: 1: Michael Rutter (Honda) 1:39.990, 2: Glen Richards (Kawasaki) +1.292, 3: Leon Haslam (Ducati) +1.391, 4: Jonathan Rea (Honda) +1.489, 5: Sean Emmett (Yamaha) +1.954, 6: Michael Laverty (Honda) +2.091, 7: Ryuichi Kiyonari (Honda) +2.106, 8: Dean Thomas (Kawasaki) +2.190, 9: Karl Harris (Honda) +2.292, 10: Scott Smart (Rizla Suzuki) +2.516. 16: James Haydon (Rizla Suzuki) +3.048.

News And Notes From The AMA Superbike Event At Infineon Raceway
