Barnes To Substitute For Haskovec At Pikes Peak

BARNES TO FILL IN FOR HASKOVEC AT PIKES PEAK Veteran racer Mike Barnes will stand in for Vincent Haskovec on Team M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Formula Xtreme Suzuki GSX-R600 at Pikes Peak International Raceway this weekend. Barnes, a Florida native, was seventh in this year’s Daytona 200 and also took seventh in the AMA Supersport race at Daytona. The experienced racer has ridden a variety of machines in the past, from Superbikes to 250 Grand Prix bikes and all types in between. “This opportunity comes at a bad moment,” said Mike. “I’ve always admired Vincent and his ability and I wish the very best for him in his recovery. Every moment of the weekend, he will be in my thoughts. But the team must go on and I’m honored they picked me to fill in Vincent’s big shoes this weekend. ” Barnes, winner of two F-USA Championships, had seen a brief hiatus in his long racing career after this season’s Daytona races as he cared for his ill mother. Barnes is eager to be back on track, however, as he will race Haskovec’s Xtreme bike at Pikes Peak. “Learning two new bikes in a weekend would be a tough deal, so we’ve decided to race the Suzuki GSX-R600 in Formula Xtreme and I will probably ride a few laps on the Superstock bike as well,” said Barnes, who has earned a podium finish at the Colorado track on board a 250 Grand Prix bike. Barnes has competed against Team M4 EMGO Suzuki in recent seasons in Xtreme. “The main goal is to get a good finish,” said Barnes. “The Pirelli tires have really come a long way, so I’m looking forward to giving them a shot, too.” The two-day AMA race weekend begins this Saturday in Colorado.

HAYDEN ON THE CUSP OF HISTORIC AMA SUPERSPORT MARK PICKERINGTON, Ohio (May 18, 2005) — For nearly 10 years Mike Smith held the distinction of being the second winningest rider in AMA Supersport history. Since 1996 Smith’s name, with 13-career wins in the class was just one line down from Miguel Duhamel’s likely unbeatable record of now 41 Supersport wins. This weekend, May 21-22, in the Pikes Peak International Raceway round of the Pro Honda Oils Supersport Championship presented by Shoei, a new name may occupy that spot under Duhamel. Tommy Hayden, who tied Smith with his 13th-career win last week at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., could become the second all-time wins leader in the series with a victory at PPIR. “Pikes Peak is a fun track,” said Hayden. “It’s a physical track where you never really get to rest. If you have your bike set up well it takes a lot less effort to deal with the track. Even though it’s pretty tight there are a couple of good places to pass and since there are so many laps you usually have to deal with lapped traffic. It’s different than any other track we go to. Jamie (Hacking) goes good there too, so it should be a good race.” With his victory last week on his factory Kawasaki, Hayden moved into sole possession of the series points lead over his Yamaha rival Jamie Hacking. Already the championship is looking more and more like a two-man battle. Hayden trying to defend his first AMA championship won last year, and Hacking hoping to win back the title, his first also, that he earned in 2003. Both Hayden and Hacking have each won the Pikes Peak Supersport race twice. If either wins Sunday they will become the first three-time winner of the race. Yamaha’s Jason DiSalvo, coming off a second-place finish last week in Sonoma, sits alone in third in the standings. He’s hoping a second half rally in the series will move him into contention for the 2005 title. Yoshimura Suzuki’s Ben Spies is fourth in the standings holding the point on a slew of riders within 13 points of one another going all the way back to Chris Peris in 10th. Suzuki is having a tough year in Supersport this season. Spies and M4 EMGO Suzuki rider Geoff May (ranked eighth) are the only Suzuki riders in the top 10. But Spies can never be counted out. He can win races on sheer talent something he did in the class last year. Suzuki last won the Pikes Peak Supersport race with Larry Pegram in 1998. Roger Lee Hayden continues to work his way up in the standings. After his factory Kawasaki had mechanical problems at Daytona and left him in 21st in the series, the youngest Hayden brother has moved all the way up to fifth in the standings. Attack Kawasaki’s Ben Attard is another rider making a surge. A pair of seventh-place finishes in the most recent rounds have moved the Aussie into seventh in the standings. Honda has no direct factory effort in Supersport this year, instead giving backing to Justin Filice, the teenage son of Motorcycle Hall of Fame racer Jimmy Filice. A former flat track racer, Filice is hoping to move up from his 18th ranking with a strong performance at Pikes Peak. Honda last won the race in 1997 with Miguel Duhamel. Fortuna Yamaha’s Elias Undergoes Operation On Broken Wrist Suffered In Crash At Le Mans Test

TONI ELÍAS TO MISS MUGELLO A press conference took place at 1pm this afternoon at the “Institut Universitari Dexeus de Barcelona”, where Fortuna Yamaha rider Toni Elías underwent an operation yesterday. The Spanish rider crashed just five minutes from the end of a day of private tests being carried out by his team at Le Mans on Monday. The Fortuna Yamaha rider, who had been on top form over the three days of the French Grand Prix, crashed at the chicane of the legendary circuit. Elías fractured the radius and scaphoid of his left wrist and ruptured the ligaments that link the triquetral bone and the radius. The rider also fractured the outside of his left fibula. Doctor Xavier Mir informed the media representatives present at the press conference of the full details of the injury to the Fortuna Yamaha rider. Xavier Mir, Doctor at the “Insitut Universitari Dexeus de Barcelona” “Toni’s operation was a case of fitting a titanium plate to his radius with a screw in his scaphoid, and the stitching of the ligaments that join the triquetral bone and the radius. The recuperation period for a normal person is around eight weeks, although taking into account Toni’s incredible capacity for recovery, I wouldn’t rule out his return at the Grand Prix of Catalunya.” Toni Elías (24): Lap time in private test: 1:34 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP POSITION: 14th with 15 points. “We stayed on for an extra day of tests at Le Mans. Up to then things had been going really well – I was lapping in 1:34, about a second faster than I had done in the race and only three-hundredths off Valentino’s time. It was a shame but that’s racing In any case I’m in good spirits and I’m already looking forward to getting back on the bike. I would like to thank my whole team in general for their constant support, my sponsors and particularly Doctor Xavier Mir.” Hervé Poncharal, FORTUNA YAMAHA TeamDirector “I’m really sad about Toni Elías’ injury. Toni is demonstrating the massive potential he has and he had shown that once again on Sunday in the race. On Monday he was having a magnificent session when, unfortunately, he crashed. I wish him a speedy recovery and I hope that he can be back with us again soon. I would like to give my own special thanks to Dr. Mir and all his team for everything they have done”.
