Five-time defending AMA Superbike Champion Mat Mladin finished in fourth. “This was a really good race for us,” said Yates. “It felt great to run up front with Eric (Bostrom) because he’s the man around here. There for a bit I really thought we’d get the win for Yoshimura Suzuki but he was getting a little bit better drive than I was.” During Superbike qualifying, the Yoshimura Suzuki squad shined. Mladin again scored the pole position, via a 54.433 lap time. Spies was also on the front row of the grid in the third position, thanks to a 54.664 lap time. And Yates was in fifth after posting a best lap of 54.960. During the race itself, Yates got a good start and was running in second almost immediately. He made several bids for the lead and did eventually run at the front for several laps toward the end of the race. On the last lap, however, he was overtaken and finished second. “It just feels good to be the top Yoshimura Suzuki finisher and to get up on the podium for the team,” added Yates. Young gun Spies, meanwhile, got off the line a little farther back than teammate Yates. But he put his head down and charged hard and picked off the competition one at a time. By the race’s end, he’d picked up the final podium spot. “This has been a good weekend for Yoshimura Suzuki,” said Spies after the race. “It would have been nice to go for the win, but it’s always great to have a couple of Suzuki GSX-R1000s on the podium. That’s what we came here to do and we did it, so I can’t complain.” Mladin, on the other hand, had difficulties off the line and had to play catch-up from the beginning. To add insult to injury, Mladin had to pit for a rear tire change midway through the race. Despite these obstacles, the Australian still managed to finish within the top five. “Overall the Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 is an amazing motorcycle,” said Mladin. “Yes, we had some problems today and we didn’t get the win. But we’d tried something new and it didn’t work out – lesson learned. Now we’re focused on Road America in two weeks because that’s a track where our bike goes good.” Mat Mladin, Team Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000, #1 4th Place – AMA Superbike 1st Place — Overall Aaron Yates, Team Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000, #20 2nd Place – AMA Superbike 3rd Place – Overall Ben Spies, Team Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000, #11 3rd Place – AMA Superbike 2nd Place — Overall AMA Superbike Top 10 Finishers: 1. Canadian Superbike Qualifying At Shannonville Postponed To Sunday By Oil Spill

0

SHANNONVILLE, ON Granby, QC’s Pascal Picotte set the pace in practice Saturday for this weekend’s opening round of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship at Shannonville Motorsport Park, but he will have to wait an extra day to make his bid for pole position. A scheduled 45-minute qualifying session to set the field for Sunday’s race was cancelled, along with the majority of Saturday afternoon’s activities, following an oil spill early in qualifying for the Amateur 600 Sport Bike class. As a result, a 20-minute Sunday morning warm-up session will instead be used as a qualifying period for the Parts Canada Superbike competitors. Picotte, the two-time defending series champion set the quickest time of the weekend in Saturday morning’s practice, recording a blazing one minute, 4.469 seconds on the Picotte Performance Yamaha YZF-R1. Francis Martin of Rock Forest, QC was second quickest after recording a time of 1:05.375 on the DXS Diablo Performance Suzuki GSX-R1000 and Brantford, ON’s Jordan Szoke was third aboard the Fast Company Honda CBR1000RR after setting a time of 1:05.560. Martin, the 1999 Superbike champ had set the pace on Friday with a time of 1:05.040. “We didn’t make any major changes,” Picotte said, “just little things to make me more comfortable. I think we can still find a little bit here and there. There’s always room for improvement.” The oil spill came as the result of a crash in the final turn of the 2.45km (1.53-mile) Shannonville ‘Pro’ circuit early in Amateur 600 Sport Bike qualifying. Initial attempts to clean the track proved unsuccessful, and series and track officials elected to curtail the remainder of the day’s activities rather than risk the safety of competitors on a potentially dangerous track surface. Saturday morning practice times were used to set the field for the International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Amateur 600 Sport Bike race. Mark Douglas of Warkworth, ON will start from pole on his Yamaha YZF-R6 after recording a time of 1:09.957. Woodstock, ON’s James Collins will line-up second, also on a Yamaha after recording a 1:10.057. Hamilton’s Dave Stewart will start third on his Suzuki GSX-R600. He recorded a best lap of 1:10.127. Suzuki Castrol Win Albacete 8H Yamahas Second and Third The Albacete 8 Horas Nocturnas round of the FIM World Endurance Championship has been won by the Suzuki Castrol GSX-R1000 of Vincent Philippe and Keiichi Kitagawa. Second place went to Spanish team Yamaha Folch Endurance, and third to Yamaha Austria. The first hour saw a battle for honour between championship leaders Suzuki Castrol and local heroes Folch Endurance, as Vincent Philippe and Folch rider Daniel Ribalta swapped the lead repeatedly. Yamaha Austria’s Gwen Giabbani settled into a comfortable third place, while Kawasaki Bolliger and Yamaha Phase One Endurance fought for fourth. The first round of pit stops allowed Suzuki Castrol to break away and build up a lead over the rest of the field, a lead which they extended hour by hour through the race. Folch Endurance and Yamaha Austria continued to trade places for the next four or five hours, with no real advantage emerging. A similar fight was developing further down the field, as Kawasaki Diablo, Shell Endurance Academy, Suzuki Fagersjo-el.se and the Sapeurs Pompiers team chased sixth place. Fagersjo-el succumbed to an electrical fault which led to their retirement after a long push-in for Paul Young. The other continued trading places until the closing minutes of the race, with Sapeurs Pompiers finishing sixth, Shell Endurance Academy seventh and Diablo eighth. Yamaha Phase One seemed set for a sure fourth place until the final hour when suspected engine problems brought them into the pits for a diagnostic check and then in again to cool the bike, allowing Bolliger Kawasaki through to take fourth. Suzuki No Limits & RT Motor Team finished in ninth place, just ahead of fellow Italians Suzuki Fabi Corse. The win for Suzuki Castrol has allowed them to stretch out a 19 point advantage in the championship standings. The next round of the championship is the Suzuka 8 hours on July 31st. Press Conference Quotes: Vincent Philippe Suzuki Castrol 1st Place: “In the first relay it was quite difficult to go past Folch Endurance, and I was thinking of the championship and not just this one race. We hope to get a special engine from the Suzuki factory, and I will be competing in the Suzuka 300km race next month with Vincent Philippe for preparation.” Daniel Ribalta Yamaha Folch 2nd Place “We had competed in the Spanish championship here two weeks ago, so it was easy to get into a fast rythmn at the start fo the race. It was important for us to get a good result here, and not just lead in the first hour.” Thomas Hinterreiter Yamaha Austria 3rd Place: “Right now I feel okay, but in the race it was very difficult.

Qualifying was held Saturday for the Hindle Exhaust Pro 600 Sport Bike and Thunder classes. Kleinburg, ON’s Frank Trombino claimed pole for the Pro 600 Sport Bike race with a time of 1:05.752 on his Trombino Yamaha Racing Yamaha YZF-R6. Steve Crevier of Maple Ridge, BC placed second at 1:05.905 on the DXS Diablo Performance Honda CBR600RR and Granby’s Kevin Lacombe was third with a 1:06.380 riding his Blackfoot Suzuki GSX-R600. Darren James of North Vancouver led the eight-lap Thunder qualifying heat from start to finish on his Buell XB9R. Saturday morning practice times were used to set the line-up for the Suzuki SV650 Cup feature. Alain Lefebvre of Rouyn-Noranda, QC will start from pole after recording a time of 1:12.345. Feature races in all five national classes will run Sunday. Practice begins at 8:30 a.m. with the first race scheduled for a 12:20 p.m. start.

Updated Post: Castrol Suzuki Wins Eight-hour World Endurance Race At Albacete
