More About The Laguna Seca Noise Lawsuit Settlement

Details of the settlement in the lawsuit brought by Highway 68 Coalition against the County of Monterey and Friends of Laguna Seca have been revealed.

In 2023, the County of Monterey entered into a long-term Concession Agreement with local non-profit Friends of Laguna Seca (FLS) for the operation of the Laguna Seca Recreation Area, which includes WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Under the terms of the deal, FLS will take over the commercial dealings for the track for a period as long as 50 years while bearing the cost of maintaining the property and making capital improvements and sharing a portion of its revenues with the County of Monterey. A&D Narigi, meanwhile, will continue to manage and operate the track under the stewardship of FLS.

But in December 2023, the Highway 68 Coalition, (a longstanding group of local residents and landowners), sued the County of Monterey and FLS claiming the County was wrong to approve the new Concession Agreement because, among other things, a state-mandated environmental study to consider the impact of noise produced by increasing activity at the racetrack had not been carried out.

Highway 68 Coalition asked the court to vacate the new Concession Agreement and order the County of Monterey and FLS to “cease and desist” from allowing activity at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca to produce noise levels “in excess of the level of use and noise that existed at the time…when the applicable zoning was established” in 1985.

A hearing on the case was scheduled to be held June 20, 2024, but both parties to the litigation have agreed to a settlement that will end the lawsuit and allow operations to continue at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

In the settlement, FLS agrees that within 30 days of taking operational control of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca it will contract a third-party “acoustical consultant” to record ambient noise levels in the area around the track during periods of inactivity, during major motorsports events, and during track rental events and “identify feasible mitigation measures to reduce sound levels from the levels detected.” FLS also agrees to spend up to $2 million (including the cost of the noise study) to complete one or all of the proposed noise mitigation measures within five years. The County of Monterey also agreed to pay the legal costs of Highway 68 Coalition, which amounted to $75,000.

In return, Highway 68 Coalition agreed to file a dismissal of its lawsuit with the court.

FLS has not yet taken operational control of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, but will “soon,” FLS President Ross Merrill said during a press conference on Wednesday.

Classic Track Day Cancels March 30 Event At Willow Springs

Yesterday’s weather forecast seemed promising with a high temp predicted to be above 60 degrees.  But today the prediction is max of 50 degrees.  Add the wind & 100% chance of rain and the track becomes a very unsafe place for motorcycles wanting to go fast.

Because of those safety concerns, I am cancelling this weekend’s track day.

But fret not.  I am moving the track day to April 13th, the weekend of the Willow Springs Grand Prix.  This will cut the racing from two days to one, but we all need some practice and I am excited to accommodate our new racer’s school.  And all of you procrastinators now have another two weeks to get their race bikes in order!  Gotta look on the bright side somehow.

If you registered for March 30 but cannot make the April 13 date, please cancel your registration on MotorsportReg and I will refund your entry fee.

I apologize to any of you who were as excited about this weekend as I, and I appreciate all of your support of Classic Track Day!

Over $130,000 In Contingency Up For Grabs For MotoAmerica Mini Cup Racers

Honda, Kawasaki And Yamaha Step Up With 2024 Contingency Programs
 

IRVINE, CA (March 27, 2024) – MotoAmerica, North America’s premier motorcycle road racing series, is pleased to announce that three manufacturers have stepped up to offer cash contingency payouts for the 21 regional Mission Mini Cup By Motul qualifiers and the Mission Mini Cup By Motul National Final. The competition kicks off this Friday and Saturday, March 29-30, at Bushnell Motorsports Park in Bushnell, Florida.

Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki will offer contingencies totaling over $130,000 for the 20-plus regional qualifiers taking place across the country and the Mission Mini Cup By Motul National Final that will be held at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, August 9-11.

Kawasaki’s contingency program is the most lucrative of the three with $50,300 up for grabs for Kawasaki-mounted racers in the Stock 110 and Stock 125 classes with payouts of $400, $150, and $100 for the top three finishers of each race in all the qualifiers. For the National Final, Kawasaki will pay $500 to win the Stock 110 class and $1000 to win the Stock 125 class.

Yamaha’s program totals $48,450 and pays $250, $125, and $50 to the top three finishers in all the qualifier events over three classes – Stock 50, Stock 110, and Stock 125 – with $500 going to the winner of each of the three classes at the National Final if he/she is racing a Yamaha.

Honda’s focus in its contingency program centers around two classes – Stock 50 and Street GP.  Each Stock 50 qualifier race will pay $150, $100, and $50 for the top three finishers and $300 going to the winner of the Stock 50 class at the National Final. Street GP will see a payout of $400, $250, and $150 per qualifier race with $800 going to any Honda-mounted rider who wins the Street GP class title at the final.

MSF Bringing Free Motorcycling Experience To 15 U.S. Cities In 2024

Free Motorcycling Experience Coming to 15 Cities Across U.S. 

25+ Events Scheduled from Alaska to Virginia

IRVINE, Calif. — The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) unveils its initial schedule of RIDE Day events for 2024, consisting of 25 planned events from Alaska to Virginia, with more being added on a regular basis. MSF recognizes nearly 2,000 training sites across the country where MSF-certified coaches teach motorcycle riding curricula. Each of these locations are eligible to host RIDE Days of their own.

RIDE Day events offer non-riders the opportunity to try a motorcycle for the first time. For current riders, it is an opportunity to ride their own machines in practice exercises designed to sharpen their skills. Through hosting a RIDE Day, MSF-recognized ranges open their facilities to the communities they serve. Events frequently feature motorcycle and gear displays, local vendors, and more to create a welcoming motorcycle experience while providing attendees a look at proper rider training.

Two key elements of RIDE Day are MOTO Intro and SKILLS Check. Events can feature either or both of these activities.

MOTO Intro: Provides those wanting to try riding for the first time with the proper gear, motorcycle, space, and professional coach to guide them through the experience. Within 30 minutes, participants can get familiar with motorcycle hand controls and, if comfortable, ride a small oval pattern. From that point, participants are offered additional information on next steps for their motorcycle riding journey.

Participants are asked to wear long, non-ripped pants, over-the-ankle footwear, and long sleeves. Helmets, gloves, and eye protection are provided.

SKILLS Check: This activation is for current riders on their own motorcycles. Skills need to be practiced to be kept in top form. The school provides advanced exercises coaches to oversee and offer timely tips if desired. Information on MSF advanced riding courses is also made available.

Participants are required to wear all of the safety equipment, and prior to starting Skills Check, their motorcycle will undergo a basic motorcycle safety check with an MSF-certified RiderCoach.

“Through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s RIDE Day, we have created an engaging activity that connects current and curious riders with proper rider training,” said Corey Eastman, Director of Rider Education Expansion for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. “As we have developed the event over the past 18 months, nearly 1,000 participants have taken part at 12 locations around the country. Twenty-eight percent of them have gone on to complete an MSF course while an additional 24 percent are planning to take an MSF course in the future.”

MotoAmerica: Lamkin Lands “Visit Indiana” Tourism Board As Title Sponsor

Nolan Lamkin, the 2023 MotoAmerica Superbike Cup Champion, has secured a new title sponsorship deal for the 2024 season.

Lamkin, who just turned 23 earlier this month, will race his BMW S 1000 RR in the 2024 MotoAmerica Superbike Cup and Stock 1000 Championships with sponsorship from Tom Wood Powersports and Visit Indiana. Visit Indiana is the state of Indiana’s tourism board, which is also known as the Indiana Destination Development Corporation (IDDC).

“We’re thrilled to partner with Indiana native Nolan Lamkin and Lamkin Racing for the 2024 season,” Amy Howell, IDDC Vice President of Tourism, Marketing & Communications, was quoted as saying in an announcement posted by Lamkin to his social media. “As Indianapolis/Indiana is the racing capital of the world, this collaboration is a fitting blend of motorsports and telling Indiana’s authentic story. We are proud to showcase thrilling experiences for race fans while showcasing the incredible things we have to offer IN Indiana to a global audience. Lamkin Racing will feature IN Indiana branding on Nolan’s race gear, including his helmet, suit and bike.”

“News is out!” Lamkin posted to Facebook. “I am super excited to be racing with @VisitIndiana as a title partner this year. Last year, we made great progress with racing and with our helmets together. To race with the State of Indiana’s tourism group is amazing.”

Lamkin’s team will be known as Visit Indiana/Tom Wood Powersports.

It’s Almost Ready, Set, Go Time At Circuit of The Americas
 

IRVINE, CA (March 26, 2024) – On April 12 and 13, the Mission King Of The Baggers Championship will be in action on the world stage at the Circuit of The Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, as part of the Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas MotoGP event. Thirteen Mission King Of The Baggers riders will participate in qualifying, a two-lap “dash for cash” Challenge, and two six-lap feature races that will take place in conjunction with MotoGP’s on-track action the same weekend.

Commenting on the event, current championship leader and Harley-Davidson Factory Racing star Kyle Wyman said, “I’m super excited to be joining MotoGP at Circuit of The Americas with King Of The Baggers and exposing this series to a global audience. I think we will put on a great show for the fans, and I expect a lot of interest from the MotoGP paddock in what we are up to. COTA always provides great racing, so there is a lot to look forward to, and I hope to continue our results as we started at Daytona.”

S&S/Indian Motorcycle’s Tyler O’Hara added, “First off, a big thank you to MotoAmerica, Drag Specialties, Mission Foods, and MotoGP for giving us this opportunity to race on the world stage. COTA is an amazing venue and a very technical track that suits the strengths of our Indian Challenger very well. Chaplain Tim Burleson, R.I.P.

Tim Burleson, a longtime chaplain to the motorcycle road racing community, died March 21 under hospice care at his home in Little River, South Carolina. The cause of death was multiple myeloma complicated by kidney failure. He was 69.

Burleson provided at-track chapel services and spiritual support, liaised with medical facilities, and officiated weddings for AMA Pro, WERA, and other motorcycle road racers and their families for years and for a time was an official chaplain for Motor Racing Outreach (MRO). In addition, he sometimes stepped up to fill various roles with racing organizations when they were short on staff.

When not at the racetrack, Burleson served as the Pastor at North United Methodist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church, both located in North, South Carolina.

Burleson was also a passionate fan of the Mountaineers football team at Appalachian State University in North Carolina, from where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1977. He was also a graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary School.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years Caroline, son Tim G. Burleson, stepson Greg Bradham, stepdaughter Anita Bradham, and five grandchildren.

Memorial services are still pending and will be announced here when they become available.

Pirelli Named Series Partner for 2024 FIM Mini Cup USA Series

Pirelli’s DIABLO Superbike Range and the FIM Mini Cup USA Series Will Serve as the Pathway to the FIM MiniGP World Series  

ATLANTA (March 27, 2024) – Pirelli, the global leader in high-performance tire manufacturing, is thrilled to announce its partnership with the 2024 FIM Mini Cup USA series, underscoring its commitment to supporting grassroots motorsports and nurturing the next generation of racing talent.

The FIM Mini Cup USA series will feature thrilling competition in the Ohvale 160 and Ohvale 190 classes. These classes will serve as qualifiers for aspiring riders aiming to secure a coveted spot in the prestigious FIM MiniGP World Series, which will take place later this year in Valencia, Spain.

As part of its partnership, Pirelli will supply its renowned 10- and 12-inch DIABLO Superbike slick range as the spec tire for both classes, ensuring all competitors have access to world-class tire technology that prepares them for the challenges of the international racing stage.

The FIM Mini Cup USA series consists of five rounds, with three rounds running in conjunction with the ASRA Championship rounds:

1.     Summit Point: May 25-26

2.     Virginia International Raceway: June 22-23

3.     Carolina Motorsports Park: July 20-21

4.     Pittsburgh International Race Complex: August 17-18

5.     Virginia International Raceway: September 7-8

Over $130,000 In Contingency Up For Grabs For MotoAmerica Mini Cup Racers

Honda, Kawasaki And Yamaha Step Up With 2024 Contingency Programs
 

IRVINE, CA (March 27, 2024) – MotoAmerica, North America’s premier motorcycle road racing series, is pleased to announce that three manufacturers have stepped up to offer cash contingency payouts for the 21 regional Mission Mini Cup By Motul qualifiers and the Mission Mini Cup By Motul National Final. The competition kicks off this Friday and Saturday, March 29-30, at Bushnell Motorsports Park in Bushnell, Florida.

Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki will offer contingencies totaling over $130,000 for the 20-plus regional qualifiers taking place across the country and the Mission Mini Cup By Motul National Final that will be held at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, August 9-11.

Kawasaki’s contingency program is the most lucrative of the three with $50,300 up for grabs for Kawasaki-mounted racers in the Stock 110 and Stock 125 classes with payouts of $400, $150, and $100 for the top three finishers of each race in all the qualifiers. For the National Final, Kawasaki will pay $500 to win the Stock 110 class and $1000 to win the Stock 125 class.

Yamaha’s program totals $48,450 and pays $250, $125, and $50 to the top three finishers in all the qualifier events over three classes – Stock 50, Stock 110, and Stock 125 – with $500 going to the winner of each of the three classes at the National Final if he/she is racing a Yamaha.

Honda’s focus in its contingency program centers around two classes – Stock 50 and Street GP.  Each Stock 50 qualifier race will pay $150, $100, and $50 for the top three finishers and $300 going to the winner of the Stock 50 class at the National Final. Street GP will see a payout of $400, $250, and $150 per qualifier race with $800 going to any Honda-mounted rider who wins the Street GP class title at the final. 

“We’re very appreciative of the amount of manufacturer contingency on the cards for our first season of the Mini Cup qualifiers and National Final,” said MotoAmerica COO Chuck Aksland. “It’s great that MotoAmerica, the manufacturers and the regional clubs’ goals all align to get more participants involved in road racing at an earlier age. With the cooperation of all the regional clubs and the support of the manufacturers we are reaching more young riders than ever. The National Final in August is looking to be an exciting event, and we hope in time will become a showcase for all Mini Cup competitors in the future. We’re looking forward to the qualifiers kicking off this weekend and to the Mission Mini Cup By Motul National Final in August at Road America.”

Free Motorcycling Experience Coming to 15 Cities Across U.S. 

25+ Events Scheduled from Alaska to Virginia

IRVINE, Calif. — The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) unveils its initial schedule of RIDE Day events for 2024, consisting of 25 planned events from Alaska to Virginia, with more being added on a regular basis. MSF recognizes nearly 2,000 training sites across the country where MSF-certified coaches teach motorcycle riding curricula. Each of these locations are eligible to host RIDE Days of their own.

RIDE Day events offer non-riders the opportunity to try a motorcycle for the first time. For current riders, it is an opportunity to ride their own machines in practice exercises designed to sharpen their skills. Through hosting a RIDE Day, MSF-recognized ranges open their facilities to the communities they serve. Events frequently feature motorcycle and gear displays, local vendors, and more to create a welcoming motorcycle experience while providing attendees a look at proper rider training.

Two key elements of RIDE Day are MOTO Intro and SKILLS Check. Events can feature either or both of these activities.

MOTO Intro: Provides those wanting to try riding for the first time with the proper gear, motorcycle, space, and professional coach to guide them through the experience. Within 30 minutes, participants can get familiar with motorcycle hand controls and, if comfortable, ride a small oval pattern. From that point, participants are offered additional information on next steps for their motorcycle riding journey.

Participants are asked to wear long, non-ripped pants, over-the-ankle footwear, and long sleeves. Helmets, gloves, and eye protection are provided.

SKILLS Check: This activation is for current riders on their own motorcycles. Skills need to be practiced to be kept in top form. The school provides advanced exercises coaches to oversee and offer timely tips if desired. Information on MSF advanced riding courses is also made available.

Participants are required to wear all of the safety equipment, and prior to starting Skills Check, their motorcycle will undergo a basic motorcycle safety check with an MSF-certified RiderCoach.

“Through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s RIDE Day, we have created an engaging activity that connects current and curious riders with proper rider training,” said Corey Eastman, Director of Rider Education Expansion for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. “As we have developed the event over the past 18 months, nearly 1,000 participants have taken part at 12 locations around the country. Twenty-eight percent of them have gone on to complete an MSF course while an additional 24 percent are planning to take an MSF course in the future.”

MotoAmerica: Lamkin Lands “Visit Indiana” Tourism Board As Title Sponsor

Nolan Lamkin, the 2023 MotoAmerica Superbike Cup Champion, has secured a new title sponsorship deal for the 2024 season.

Lamkin, who just turned 23 earlier this month, will race his BMW S 1000 RR in the 2024 MotoAmerica Superbike Cup and Stock 1000 Championships with sponsorship from Tom Wood Powersports and Visit Indiana. Visit Indiana is the state of Indiana’s tourism board, which is also known as the Indiana Destination Development Corporation (IDDC).

“We’re thrilled to partner with Indiana native Nolan Lamkin and Lamkin Racing for the 2024 season,” Amy Howell, IDDC Vice President of Tourism, Marketing & Communications, was quoted as saying in an announcement posted by Lamkin to his social media. “As Indianapolis/Indiana is the racing capital of the world, this collaboration is a fitting blend of motorsports and telling Indiana’s authentic story. We are proud to showcase thrilling experiences for race fans while showcasing the incredible things we have to offer IN Indiana to a global audience. Lamkin Racing will feature IN Indiana branding on Nolan’s race gear, including his helmet, suit and bike.”

“News is out!” Lamkin posted to Facebook. “I am super excited to be racing with @VisitIndiana as a title partner this year. Last year, we made great progress with racing and with our helmets together. To race with the State of Indiana’s tourism group is amazing.”

Lamkin’s team will be known as Visit Indiana/Tom Wood Powersports.

13 Mission King Of The Baggers Racers Ready To Race On The World Stage At COTA

It’s Almost Ready, Set, Go Time At Circuit of The Americas
 

IRVINE, CA (March 26, 2024) – On April 12 and 13, the Mission King Of The Baggers Championship will be in action on the world stage at the Circuit of The Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, as part of the Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas MotoGP event. Thirteen Mission King Of The Baggers riders will participate in qualifying, a two-lap “dash for cash” Challenge, and two six-lap feature races that will take place in conjunction with MotoGP’s on-track action the same weekend.

Commenting on the event, current championship leader and Harley-Davidson Factory Racing star Kyle Wyman said, “I’m super excited to be joining MotoGP at Circuit of The Americas with King Of The Baggers and exposing this series to a global audience. I think we will put on a great show for the fans, and I expect a lot of interest from the MotoGP paddock in what we are up to. COTA always provides great racing, so there is a lot to look forward to, and I hope to continue our results as we started at Daytona.”

S&S/Indian Motorcycle’s Tyler O’Hara added, “First off, a big thank you to MotoAmerica, Drag Specialties, Mission Foods, and MotoGP for giving us this opportunity to race on the world stage. COTA is an amazing venue and a very technical track that suits the strengths of our Indian Challenger very well. I’m treating it like any other race, I’m engaged, doing my homework, working with the team, focused on the process, and prepared to go to battle with confidence.”

Chaplain Tim Burleson, R.I.P.

Tim Burleson, a longtime chaplain to the motorcycle road racing community, died March 21 under hospice care at his home in Little River, South Carolina. The cause of death was multiple myeloma complicated by kidney failure. He was 69.

Burleson provided at-track chapel services and spiritual support, liaised with medical facilities, and officiated weddings for AMA Pro, WERA, and other motorcycle road racers and their families for years and for a time was an official chaplain for Motor Racing Outreach (MRO). In addition, he sometimes stepped up to fill various roles with racing organizations when they were short on staff.

When not at the racetrack, Burleson served as the Pastor at North United Methodist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church, both located in North, South Carolina.

Burleson was also a passionate fan of the Mountaineers football team at Appalachian State University in North Carolina, from where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1977. He was also a graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary School.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years Caroline, son Tim G. Burleson, stepson Greg Bradham, stepdaughter Anita Bradham, and five grandchildren.

Memorial services are still pending and will be announced here when they become available.
