MotoGP: Aprilia Officially Introduces Factory Riders And RS-GP24

Editorial Note: Scroll down to see photos of the Aprilia RS-GP24.

The 2024 Aprilia Racing season officially kicks off

THE RS-GP24 IS UNVEILED, THE ITALIAN BIKE FOR BATTLING AT THE TOP LEVELS OF MOTOGP

After its on-track début in the opening tests of Sepang, sporting the temporary but spectacular “full-black” livery, the time has come to present the Aprilia RS-GP24 in its official version. A project with a strong technical identity, proudly Italian and which has now reached full maturity.

After two seasons of constant growth, 2024 represents the year of confirmation for Aprilia. Technical evolution has taken bike and team to an unprecedented level and the racing department from Noale, under the leadership of Romano Albesiano, has taken on this challenge without betraying its DNA. In other words, in an innovative way, with choices that blazed the trail for others and which, in the latest evolution of the RS-GP, find an even more extreme application.

We are definitely talking about aerodynamics – the most visible part – but every detail has been redesigned and advanced. From the V4 engine to the chassis, from the electronics to the strategies, nothing was overlooked whilst still maintaining a clear connection with the already competitive 2023 base.

There will certainly be no lack of data to be analysed at the end of each session, given the fact that, in addition to the super-confirmed duo of Aleix Espargaró and Maverick Viñales, Miguel Oliveira will be starting the new season on an RS-GP24. Raúl Fernández, the second Team Trackhouse standard bearer, will be using a 2023-spec bike which will then be upgraded to the most recent version.

ALEIX ESPARGARÓ

“The growth we have demonstrated in recent seasons has been incredible. I am proud to be part of this project which I have always considered to be my second family. In 2024, we’ll make another step forward. Last year we were lacking the consistency to battle all the way to the end, but we still demonstrated that we are a tough rival for everyone. It won’t be simple because, even if it seemed impossible, the level in MotoGP has increased even more. I feel like I’m ready – physically and mentally – and I believe in the work that the Aprilia staff has carried out.”

MAVERICK VIÑALES

“Our 2023 season ended on an upward trend and we want to continue that now. The feeling with the team is outstanding. During the winter break I trained like mad and I have faith in Aprilia Racing’s work. If we continue to set the goal of squeezing the most out of our technical package every weekend, the results will follow naturally. The first tests confirmed the extremely high level of the championship. Practically every rider and every bike on the grid have the potential to battle for the podium. This makes the challenge even more intriguing.”

MASSIMO RIVOLA

“Over the last few years, Aprilia Racing has undertaken a constant growth process. First becoming a factory team, and then putting four bikes on the track thanks to the satellite team. In 2024, we’ll raise the bar even higher, since Miguel Oliveira will be starting the season on an RS-GP with the same specs as the factory bikes and Raùl will receive it subsequently. This is a significant effort for the racing department, but it is also a sign of this project’s evolution on all fronts. It has not been simple and the season promises to be even more demanding, but at the same time, I believe in the potential of our team. And I am proud of what we have demonstrated thus far, both from a technical point of view and in terms of dedication and commitment. We want to be protagonists in MotoGP and we have everything we need to be able to make that happen. We have four highly qualified riders like Aleix, Maverick, Miguel, and Raùl, a racing department that is courageous and capable of innovation, not to mention that pinch of Italian pride that never hurts in racing.”

ROMANO ALBESIANO

“Our approach to the 2024 season could not stray from the good base that we had already built, especially over the last two seasons. The RS-GP is a mature project, faithful to the Aprilia philosophy, which we have sought to advance in every aspect. The aerodynamic study is perhaps the clearest. We introduced a few concepts that are definitely innovative in order to improve the load and penetration characteristics. But every detail has been revisited, as must be done in a championship which has placed technological research at unprecedented levels. Having three bikes with the same specs on track from the season start will undoubtedly contribute to streamlining our growth process. We’ll have much more information available that we will then need to skillfully analyse and interpret.”

MotoGP: Pre-Season Testing Resumes February 19 In Qatar

#QatarTest: the final countdown to competition is on!

Two more days of testing provide the class of 2024 their final chance to prep for a record-breaking season

Friday, 16 February 2024

We already got an incredible first taste of the season ahead thanks to a star-studded Shakedown and the headline-making Sepang Test, and now there are just two more days of track action before we go racing. Here’s where we left off and what to look for in Qatar – as well as how to stay up to date across the final pre-season prep!

HOW TO FOLLOW THE ACTION

On motogp.com, Live Timing, minute-by-minute reports and a final round-up at the end of the action provide a 360 of everything that’s happening – and there’s also plenty of live content!

On social media, a midday live broadcast from pitlane reporter Simon Crafar and tech guru Jack Gorst takes you to the heart of the action, and After The Flag will then link up live to Lusail with interviews and more at the end of each day. As with Sepang, the live show begins half an hour before the track action ends, and the broadcast will be anchored in Barcelona by Louis Suddaby and Elliott York.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Ducati Lenovo, Prima Pramac, Pertamina Enduro VR46 & Gresini

After domination right at the top thanks to a new fastest ever lap from reigning Champion Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team), backed up by a fast showing from Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) on the chase and Enea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo Team) in third, signs are very positive for the newest Borgo Panigale machine. We won’t have Franco Morbidelli back in action just yet at Prima Pramac Racing, but he’ll be looking positively at the performance of the machine he’ll be racing this season.

Meanwhile at Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team, new arrival Fabio Di Giannantonio hit the ground running in Sepang, putting in a seriously impressive Tissot Sprint simulation, whereas Marco Bezzecchi will be looking for a little more. He’ll also likely have an eye on the Rins Cup – the informal but much-feted competition to beat Alex Rins (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) to the honour of first on track every day. At Gresini Racing MotoGP™ it’s an interesting dynamic too: Alex Marquez was fast from the off, fourth overall and only just behind Bastianini, whereas Marc Marquez’ focus was “laps, laps, laps” as he looks to find every limit of every part of his new machine. The number 93, whether 19th or 1st on the timesheets, is sure to make more headlines at Lusail. He also reminded everyone in Malaysia that the testing venues since Valencia are both tracks he’s always found tougher…

Aprilia & Trackhouse Racing

It was a test of two halves in Sepang, or a test of two opinions. In one camp, Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) said it was their best pre-season yet and he was fifth overall. But teammate Maverick Viñales and Trackhouse Racing’s Miguel Oliveira found it a more difficult test, and they’ll be looking for much more in Qatar – either in terms of adjustments to get the same out of the package as Espargaro managed to do, or in hardware. The Noale Factory also haven’t run their new engine through its paces to define their final spec yet, something they said we’ll see in Qatar, and we’ll also see Raul Fernandez back on Trackhouse duty after his crash saw him sit much of Sepang out.

Red Bull KTM & Red Bull GASGAS Tech3

The fastest Austrian machine overall was Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) as the outfit look to go from frontrunners to the factory to beat, and he and teammate Jack Miller will undoubtedly continue with their pre-season modus operandi: putting everything through its paces and fitting everything together before being concerned with a serious assault on the timesheets.

But it was rookie sensation Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) who stole many of the headlines, fastest at the Shakedown, fast in the Sepang Test and with a very impressive Tissot Sprint simulation that was the best of the RC16s over nine laps. Based on his performances in the World Championship paddock so far, it’s both very Acosta and yet genuinely still remarkable at the same time. Will he keep that run going at Lusail? On the other side of Acosta’s box, meanwhile, Augusto Fernandez will be looking for more. A tough Sepang Test leaves him seeking some big steps forward before the lights both come on and go out in the desert for racing.

Repsol Honda & Castrol/Idemitsu Honda LCR

After we’ve seen the genuinely quite different liveries from Repsol Honda and Castrol Honda LCR revealed this week, the Japanese giants will now be back on track and back to work as they push to return to the top. There were positive signs at the Sepang test that steps forward have already been made, and a whole lot of positive vibes. Joan Mir (Repsol Honda Team) led the charge on the timesheets, Takaaki Nakagami (Idemitsu Honda LCR) was next, then Johann Zarco (Castrol Honda LCR) before fellow new arrival Luca Marini (Repsol Honda Team), but Marini also hinted at more hardware to come in Qatar as they methodically work their way through their updates for 2024.

Monster Energy Yamaha

There were positive signs from Yamaha in Sepang too, with only one slight cloud hanging over the camp: one-lap pace. It’s something Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) said they’ll continue focusing on until they make inroads, so over two more days in Qatar that will be one to watch. But those positives elsewhere were real, and there was a host of new stuff coming out the box in Sepang too, from the engine to the tail unit. So Quartararo and new teammate Alex Rins will have plenty to work with in the final two test days. And remember, the new concession rules mean both Yamaha and Honda don’t have to homologate a final engine spec and can keep testing throughout the season, so the end of Tuesday’s track action is far from their last chance to improve before the post-Jerez one-day test.

For now though, Monday and Tuesday sees MotoGP™ back on track in Qatar, with track action from 14:00 to 21:00 (UTC + 3) on each day – followed by a 15-minute practice start session. So join us on motogp.com, across social media and then live from Lusail as the final pieces of the puzzle slot into place before the first race!

  • The WorldSBK grid will have a final opportunity to fine-tune their setups before the season opener with a single day of testing scheduled at Phillip Island on Tuesday.
  • Ducati’s Nicolo Bulega and BMW’s Toprak Razgatlioglu, currently the fastest in pre-season tests, will tackle the Australian circuit with their new bikes.
  • Alvaro Bautista, discreet during pre-season as he adapts to new weight regulations, will focus on readiness for the opening round of the season.
Grid transformations and new horizons

The 2024 WorldSBK grid sees major changes, with only four teams unchanged from last year.

Toprak Razgatlioglu departed from Yamaha to join the ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team, where he teams up with Michael van der MarkJonathan Rea ended his longstanding partnership with Kawasaki to join Pata Prometeon Yamaha alongside Andrea Locatelli, bringing a fresh dynamic to the grid.

Nicolo Bulega‘s promotion to the Aruba.it Racing – Ducati team, partnering with Alvaro Bautista, came after an impressive 2023 WorldSSP campaign which saw him clinch the title. Axel Bassani stepped up to the Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK after Rea‘s departure, transitioning from Ducati. Out of the five factory teams in 2023, only Team HRC have kept the same line-up as last year, aligning Iker Lecuona and Xavi Vierge.

Additionally, Sam Lowes and Andrea Iannone made their much-anticipated debut in WorldSBK with Elf Marc VDS Racing Team and Team GoEleven respectively. With these seismic shifts in the WorldSBK grid, the stage is set for a fiercely competitive season.

Navigating 2024 new regulations

In 2024, significant rule changes are in effect. Riders below a reference weight must add ballast to their bikes. A fuel capacity limit of 21 litres is now enforced, and fuel flow regulations are under scrutiny, with some bikes collecting data this season. There’s also been a change with RPM limits. Manufacturers will start 2024 how they ended 2023 – except Ducati, who have their original 2023 limit back

Pre-season insights

The Official Test at Phillip Island serves as a crucial platform for teams and riders to assess their readiness for the season ahead, as pre-season testing has already provided insights, setting the stage for Round 1.

Toprak Razgatlioglu‘s move to BMW proves promising, with a strong pace and significant improvements noted. Jonathan Rea impresses despite lacking outright speed, showcasing consistent performance during testing. Meanwhile, Alvaro Bautista‘s adaptation struggles and injury setbacks contrast with Nicolo Bulega‘s standout performances for Ducati

MotoAmerica: Rahal Ducati Moto Happy With First Pre-Season Test

RAHAL DUCATI MOTO COMPLETE SUCCESSFUL FIRST TEST

ZIONSVILLE, Ind., (02.15.2024) -The recently established Rahal Ducati Moto team successfully concluded its inaugural three-day testing session at Jennings GP in Hamilton County, Florida.

Despite the challenging weather conditions in the lead-up to the test, team riders PJ Jacobsen, Kayla Yaakov, and Corey Alexander were greeted by clear skies on Tuesday morning, providing a welcome respite from the earlier heavy rain. The team, determined to make the most of the favorable weather, diligently assembled three brand-new Ducati Panigale V2s, which had not yet experienced any track time. The riders, along with their newly-formed crews, worked closely to establish a comfortable and effective rapport with their new bikes, addressing and resolving any minor issues that surfaced during the test.

The riders covered an impressive number of laps over the three days, with PJ clocking a fastest time of 1:15.4s, Kayla – 1:15.6s, and Corey – 1:16.2s. They leave the Jennings track with a good base ahead of their maiden race with the RDM team in just three weeks time, in Daytona Beach, FL.

PJ Jacobsen:

“It’s been a good first test, just getting the bikes on track and getting to know everyone, it’s a steady building process, and it has gone really well. The first day I wasn’t too comfortable so I worked with all the crew and the feeling improved as the test progressed. I’m now feeling a lot happier and we just have to keep chipping away to find the best set up for Daytona.”

Kayla Yaakov:

“I’ve really enjoyed the first test and getting to know the team that Ben and Graham have assembled. Everyone worked really well together and starting off in this way is very important ahead of the season. They did a great job of building three bikes overnight and reacting to all the issues that come up when building new bikes! I feel we improved steadily as the test progressed, there were a few small things here and there, but we’ve worked through them together which is key, and that’s why we’re here testing. The final day was super positive, and we were able to find a competitive base setting. I am very happy with what we were able to learn and achieve this week, and I have full confidence that this team can deliver some awesome results this season!”

Corey Alexander:

“The most important thing was getting all the team together. This isn’t just a normal ‘new team’ but a completely new team of people, bikes, everything! We worked through the kinks that you expect to find when rolling out new bikes that have never been on track and overall, considering where we were a week ago, we’re in a good place for sure! I’m a slow burner and take my time to find my groove, so having the three days has been great to get to a place that I’m comfortable with ahead of Daytona.”

Ben Spies, Rahal Ducati Moto Team Principal:

“I’m extremely happy with how the first test went. Obviously it was a little nerve wracking for the first time working all together with new mechanics and riders and gelling together, but everybody worked really well and we got three good days to work with and plenty of laps. We leave this test with three happy riders and some good baseline set ups headed to Daytona.”

Graham Rahal, Rahal Ducati Moto Co-Owner:

“Unfortunately I was unable to be at the first test, but I was certainly there in spirit! Ben and the team all kept me updated throughout the three days and it sounds like it was a very productive and successful first test. Putting together a set of people that haven’t worked together before is always challenging but I’m thankful to Ben, James and all the team for their commitment to the project. Now we’re on countdown to Daytona and I can’t wait to see PJ, Kayla, and Corey out on track!”

Countdown to Round 1: WorldSBK heads to Phillip Island

What to look out for in Phillip Island

Despite facing challenges in the 2023 season, Can Oncu returns for his fifth campaign with the Kawasaki Puccetti Racing outfit. Meanwhile, Yari Montella, a podium finisher in 2023, remains committed to the Barni Spark Racing Team.

Making a return to WorldSSP are Lorenzo Baldassarri (ORELAC Racing VERDNATURA) and Lucas Mahias (GMT94 Yamaha), eager to build on their past successes.

New regulations

In 2024, WorldSSP undergoes significant scheduling changes. Notably, the grids for Race 2 will now be determined by the fastest laps recorded in Race 1 for the top nine contenders, emphasizing outstanding performances. The Tissot Superpole sessions take place on Friday, after a Free Practice session in the morning. Alongside these changes, the SBK Commission introduces sustainable fuel for both the WorldSBK and WorldSSP categories, commencing from the 2024 season, with a mandatory minimum of 40% sustainable fuel content.
