MotoGP : M. Marquez Fastest Friday Afternoon in Austria

Marc Marquez led MotoGP World Championship practice Friday afternoon at Red Bull Ring – Spielberg, in Austria. Riding his Lenovo Ducati Desmosedici GP25 on spec Michelin tires, the six-time World Champion covered the 2.7-mile (4.35 km) track in 1:28.117 to lead the field of 21 riders.

Pedro Acosta was the best of the rest with a 1:28.345 on his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing RC16.

M. Marquez’s teammate, Francesco Bagnaia was third at 1:28.385.

Alex Marquez finished the session fourth with a 1:28.435 on his BK8 Gresini Racing Ducati Desmosedici GP24.

Raul Fernandez crossed the finish line fifth on his Trackhouse MotoGP Aprilia RS-GP25 with a lap time of 1:28.519.

More, from a press release issued by Dorna:

Marc Marquez beats Acosta to Friday top spot in Austria. The #93 claims P1 on Friday as KTM, Aprilia, and Honda clinch top six spots.

Practice honours post summer break went the way of title race leader Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) after the #93’s 1:28.117 was enough to finish 0.228s ahead of second fastest Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) at the BWIN Grand Prix of Austria. P3 went the way of Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) on Friday afternoon, as big hitters miss the Q2 cut.

The Opening Stages

There was early drama for reigning World Champion Jorge Martin (Aprilia Racing) after he crashed at Turn 9. Thankfully the #1 was all OK, but his first choice RS-GP was not. Meanwhile, his 2023 and 2024 sparring partner, Bagnaia, led the session from Luca Marini (Honda HRC Castrol), with Marc Marquez and Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) sitting comfortably in the top four after 30 minutes of running.

Double Czech GP podium finisher Acosta jumped to the summit before we saw red flags shown following a Turn 6 crash for Quartararo. It looked like some fluid was potentially spilt onto the circuit from Jack Miller’s smoking Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP machine, and after the Frenchman’s YZR-M1 tumbled into the air fence, redeployment and track cleaning measures needed to be undertaken before the session could get back underway for the final 26 minutes. Miguel Oliveira, Miller’s teammate, also crashed where Quartararo went down.

Changes Aplenty In The Top 10 Chase

With 17 minutes left, rookie Ai Ogura (Trackhouse MotoGP Team) leapt to P1 with a 1:28.877 to go over two tenths clear, before Johann Zarco (CASTROL Honda LCR) and Franco Morbidelli (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) carved their way into P1 and P2 with just over 10 minutes to go.

This was a very competitive Friday afternoon. Acosta was soon back occupying top spot from Bagnaia and Marc Marquez, with Joan Mir (Honda HRC Castrol) now P4 ahead of fellow HRC star Zarco. Then, with two minutes to go, Alex Marquez parked himself in P3 to demote Marc Marquez to P4, before the latter then moved the goalposts in Austria.

The #93 slammed in a 1:28.117, a new all-time lap record, to go two tenths ahead of the rest. Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse MotoGP Team) and Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) were late improvers before the chequered flag came out, and that saw both gain automatic Q2 entry as no more top 10 lap times were set.

Friday’s Top 10

Alex Marquez eventually finished P4 on Friday ahead of Fernandez, with Mir heading straight into Q2 in P6. Morbidelli was just under six tenths away from Marquez in P7, with Zarco, Fermin Aldeguer (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP), and Binder the last riders to make it into the top 10 as both factory KTMs earn Q2 spots on Friday at their home Grand Prix.

Coming Up: Quali and Sprint Saturday

A stacked Q1 awaits with the likes of Brno Sprint podium finisher Bastianini, Quartararo, Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team), and both factory Aprilia Racing riders – Martin and Marco Bezzecchi – face the challenge of finishing inside the top two in the first part of qualifying on Saturday morning. Then, it’ll be time for Q2 and the Tissot Sprint.

MotoGP: Introducing The Harley-Davidson Bagger World Cup

Official series name and 2026 calendar announced at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.

The Harley-Davidson Bagger World Cup is ready for launch in 2026. The name and full calendar for the world’s first global racing series dedicated to high-performance Harley-Davidson bagger motorcycles was revealed today at a Press Conference at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.

Co-developed between Harley Davidson and MotoGP, the Harley-Davidson Bagger World Cup brings the thunder of race-tuned V-Twin touring motorcycles to premier international circuits. This exciting new series connects MotoGP to one of North America’s most iconic lifestyle brands and marks a pivotal moment in Harley-Davidson’s competitive evolution and global motorsport ambitions.

THE CALENDAR

The series will feature six rounds across North America and Europe. The action kicks off in the United States, home of Harley-Davidson and the original King of the Baggers racing series, before making its way across Europe and onto the global stage – culminating in a championship-deciding finale at the spectacular Red Bull Ring in Austria.

•    Austin, USA: March 27–29

•    Mugello, Italy: May 29–31

•    Assen, Netherlands: June 26–28

•    Silverstone, Great Britain: August 7–9

•    Aragon, Spain: August 28–30

•    Red Bull Ring, Austria: September 18–20

Based on Harley-Davidson’s Grand American Touring platform, Harley-Davidson Bagger World Cup race bikes will be radically transformed for speed, agility, and spectacle, offering fans a new experience unlike anything currently on the MotoGP schedule – with its own distinct culture.

Kolja Rebstock, Senior Vice President, International Markets, Harley-Davidson:

“The launch of the Harley-Davidson Bagger World Cup signals a bold new era for Harley-Davidson and for the sport of motorcycle racing. This series is about pushing limits, of our machines, our riders, and our brand, on a global stage. We’re proud to partner with MotoGP to bring this vision to life.”

Carlos Ezpeleta, Chief Sporting Officer of MotoGP rights holder Dorna Sports:

“We’re always looking for ways to innovate and expand, both at the track for our record crowds as we continue our evolution, and to grow the reach of the sport even further – staying faithful to what fans love about MotoGP but finding ways to connect with new audiences. The Harley-Davidson Bagger World Cup fulfills the brief. It will be a fantastic addition to race weekends for fans onsite at the same time as connecting our sport to one of the most iconic lifestyle and cultural brands in North America – and the world.”

Jeff Schuessler, Global Director, Marketing & Partnerships Racing Programs, Harley-Davidson:

“This new cup is the next step in Harley-Davidson’s racing evolution. We’ve seen what’s possible with King of the Baggers in the U.S. and now we’re bringing that same energy, performance, and attitude to the world stage. This is more than just racing; it’s a global statement of who we are and where we’re going.”

The Harley-Davidson Bagger World Cup was first teased earlier this year during the Grand Prix of France at the legendary Le Mans, where Harley-Davidson and MotoGP shared their joint vision for a global bagger racing series. The response from fans, media, and the industry set the stage perfectly for today’s full reveal.

Prospective teams, riders, and sponsors are now invited to engage with the series as preparations accelerate for the 2026 debut season. High-resolution imagery and official series assets are available now via H-Dmediakit.com, and everyone can find out more HERE.

Moto2: Gonzalez Breaks Record In Austria

Manuel Gonzalez led Moto2 World Championship practice Friday afternoon at Red Bull Ring – Spielberg, in Austria. Riding his LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt IntactGP on Pirelli control tires, the Spaniard lapped the 2.7-mile (4.35 km) road course in 1:33.290, topping the field of 29 riders and breaking Sergio Garcia’s All-Time Lap Record of 1:33.461 from 2024.

Aron Canet was second-best with a time of 1:33.303 on his Fantic Racing Lino Sonego Kalex.

Ivan Ortola did a third-fastest 1:33.367 on his QJMOTOR – FRINSA – MSI Boscoscuro.

American Joe Roberts finished Friday afternoon’s practice session 15th with a best time of 1:33.750 on his OnlyFans American Racing Team Kalex.

More, from a press release issued by Dorna:

Gonzalez pips title rival Canet by 0.013s on Friday in Austria. A new lap record couldn’t stop 25 riders being covered by less than a second at the Red Bull Ring on Friday in Moto2™, a sign of things to come?

Manuel Gonzalez (LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP) started his Austrian GP weekend as he means to go on as he clinched top honours in a close-fought session with a new lap record, just 0.013s ahead of the opposition. Aiming to extend his title advantage, the #18 found form on Friday to lead into the rest of the weekend but he can’t relax just yet, with plenty of contenders behind.

Laying down the marker early on, Gonzalez was looking strong, particularly in the final sector. He was safely through ahead of title rival Aron Canet (Fantic Racing Lino Sonego) and Ivan Ortola (QJMOTOR – FRINSA – MSI), who had one of his strongest Friday’s of the season in P2. Strong pace was also donned by Celestino Vietti (Sync SpeedRS Team) who despite looking good in the first three sectors, couldn’t hook it up in the final one, finishing fourth. Filip Salac (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team) rounded out the top five.

Diogo Moreira (Italtrans Racing Team) left it late to move up into P6 on his final flying lap from outside the top 14, whilst Marcos Ramirez (OnlyFans American Racing Team) was another late improver. Tony Arbolino (BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha Moto2) clinched eighth but fell at Turn 1 late on, ahead of Daniel Holgado (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team) and Albert Arenas (ITALJET Gresini Moto2). Arenas himself was a late crasher at Turn 7 but was relatively OK. Alonso Lopez (Sync SpeedRS Team), Senna Agius (Liqui Moly Dynavolt Intact GP), Izan Guevara (BLU CRU Pramac Yamaha Moto2) and Barry Baltus (Fantic Racing Lino Sonego) completed the top 14, booking their place in Q2.

However, there are big names that find themselves in Q1, with Brno winner Joe Roberts (OnlyFans American Racing Team) only 15th and Silverstone podium finisher David Alonso (CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team) stuck in 18th. He originally had a strong session but it ended early with mechanical issues and thus leaving him unable to improve his time. Argentina and USA winner Jake Dixon (ELF Marc VDS Racing Team) was also struggling, taking P21 at the flag.
