2022 KAWASAKI KX™ MINI MOTOCROSS LINEUP

THE BIKE THAT BUILDS CHAMPIONS

The Kawasaki KX™ mini motocross lineup returns even stronger for 2022 with the all-new Kawasaki KX™112, an updated KX™85, and the KX™65. The entire lineup is ingrained with a long list of successes that have stemmed from building champions from the start.

All-new for 2022 is the KX112 supermini racer that bridges the gap to full-size motocross bikes and boasts a powerful 112 cc displacement engine, the largest in its class. It’s joined by the KX85, which shares several new features with its bigger KX112 counterpart, including a stronger transmission, increased cooling performance, Dunlop MX33 tires, and revised styling and ergonomics. The KX65 returns as the most compact bike in the Kawasaki KX™ lineup and the starting point for aspiring champions.

The Kawasaki Team Green™ racing team has been the dominant force in amateur racing for nearly four decades, providing contingency and an unmatched level of trackside support to racers across the nation. Under the Team Green racing program, a trackside support system consisting of local, regional, and amateur motocross and off-road events across the country has been put in place. There, Kawasaki technicians and race transporters can be found providing critical parts and technical assistance to all riders. Kawasaki’s efforts, matched with the input from aspiring young stars, have produced winning products across its lineup.

KAWASAKI KX™112

·        NEW class-leading 112 cc two-stroke engine

·        NEW stronger 6-speed transmission

·        NEW factory-inspired styling

·        NEW radiator shroud design

·        NEW Dunlop MX33 tires

Building on the strengths of its predecessor, the all-new KX112 offers more race-winning potential in a highly competitive class. The increased power makes the KX112 feel faster everywhere on the track, especially where riders can take advantage of its stronger low-end torque.

The increased displacement on the 2022 two-stroke, single cylinder KX112 comes by way of a 5.8 mm longer stroke and now features a bore and stroke of 52.5 x 51.6 mm. The new engine paired with the powervalve system delivers strong low-end torque that translates to holeshot performance out of the starting gate and a stronger drive when exiting corners. Power and torque are improved across the rev range with peak power significantly greater. Updated intake and exhaust port timing help contribute to the KX112’s stronger low rpm torque, while a revised piston profile improves durability a redesigned contact surface for the piston ring improves the initial bedding-in performance.

In order to reduce the lateral force placed on the piston, and generate more efficient power, the connecting rod was increased by 7 mm. A 4 mm greater crankshaft web offers increased strength to match the greater offset of the crank pin with the new longer stroke engine. The carburetor settings have been fine-tuned to match the all-new engine and contribute to sharp response across the rev range. Complementing the more powerful 112 cc engine is an all-new 6-speed transmission and stronger bearing retainers for the small-end needle bearings, and big-end needle bearings with greater load capacity to help harness the increased engine output. Larger gear dogs improve durability and thrust washers have been added for to improve durability and reduce friction.

A sturdy high-tensile steel perimeter frame was designed in order to harness the engine’s power, offering advantages of strength and torsional rigidity that allows riders to push hard on the track. The chassis is matched with 36 mm inverted front forks that offer excellent damping and bottoming resistance, enabling the all-new KX112 to be ridden hard while maintaining comfort. Riders can fine-tune their settings through 20-way adjustable compression damping. On the rear, Uni-Trak® rear suspension offers preload, 24-way compression and 21-way rebound damping adjustability in order to allow each rider to tailor their settings based on size and skill level.

Similar to the larger KX™ models, petal disc front and rear brakes can be found and are used to achieve strong braking performance. A large-diameter 220 mm front brake is gripped by a dual-piston caliper, while the 184 mm rear disc is held by a single-piston caliper. The KX112’s large 19-inch front and 16-inch rear wheels nicely bridge the gap between minibikes and full-sized race bikes, accommodating larger youth riders and helping to navigate over the bumps and ruts commonly found on motocross tracks. The wheels are fitted with new Dunlop MX33 tires that offer enhanced grip and control. .

Kawasaki continues its unmatched commitment towards providing riders with unmatched comfort with class-leading ERGO-FIT® adjustable components  like an adjustable handlebar mounting system that allows riders to tailor fit their riding style and size by selecting from among  six possible handlebar positions. Collars offer a choice of three heights (STD, +5 mm, +10 mm), while reversible handlebar clamps allow two forward/rearward positions (STD, +10 mm FWD).

The bodywork of the KX112 follows along the lines of its bigger KX counterparts by forming a slim ergonomics package that facilitates rider movements and contributes to strong factory looks. The top of the fuel tank design is flat in order to facilitate sitting farther forward to weigh the front wheel when cornering and a slim, flat seat design makes it easier for riders to adjust their riding position. A new shroud design accommodates a wider range of young riders and makes it easier for taller riders to find a good fit on the bike. The minimalist side covers were made as small as possible and the seams between the shrouds, seat, and side covers are flush in order to allow the rider to move around on the bike with ease.

The new aggressive  looks, paired with the ergonomic fit that facilitates control, moves the styling of the KX112 closer to Kawasaki’s full-sized motocrossers. In addition to the new aggressive shroud styling, the rims are coated in black alumite just like the vehicles used by Kawasaki’s factory racing team. A green alumite finish on the fork and shock adjusters strengthens the KX family resemblance, while the brushed aluminum swingarm completes the high-quality image.

The Kawasaki KX™ motorcycle range returns stronger than ever for 2022 with its championship-winning packages, including its recently introduced off-road competition models.

Leading the way as the flagship model in the Kawasaki KX range is the KX™450 with a powerful 449cc engine, electric start, Showa A-KIT technology suspension, and a coned disc-spring hydraulic clutch that have proven to capture awards, accolades, and race wins.

All-new in 2021, the 2022 KX™250 remains the most powerful KX250 to date and features a slim aluminum perimeter frame, electric start, and coned disc-spring hydraulic clutch. The KX250 has more AMA motocross and supercross championships combined than any other manufacturer in its class, truly making it the bike that builds champions.

Powered by technology that hails from a legacy of champions, Kawasaki’s KX motorcycle range saw the addition of the KX™450X and KX™250X cross country models in 2021, bringing purposely tuned off-road competition models to the KX lineup. Developed to dominate off-road racecourses in both the woods and the desert, the cross-country KX lineup offers riders the required components for off-road competition straight from Kawasaki along with the dominant engine and chassis performance found on its KX counterparts right off the showroom floor.

KAWASAKI KX™450

As the flagship model in the Kawasaki KX lineup, the 2022 Kawasaki KX450 is built with race-winning components to help get Kawasaki riders to the top step of the podium. Tuned to best suit race-experienced riders, the 449cc liquid-cooled, four-stroke engine boasts an abundance of power along with a slim aluminum perimeter frame, Showa A-KIT technology suspension, coned disc-spring hydraulic clutch, and electric start to deliver the ultimate championship-winning package.

The 449cc lightweight engine package utilizes input derived directly from the Monster Energy® Kawasaki race team, producing peak power and a torque curve that makes it easy to get on the gas early. The potent KX450 engine features an electric start activated by the push of a button and powered by a compact Li-ion battery. A lightweight finger-follower valve actuation design comes by way of Kawasaki’s top-level road racing technology and World Superbike engineers, enabling larger-diameter valves and more aggressive cam profiles. A close-ratio five-speed transmission is paired with a high-capacity coned disc-spring hydraulic clutch that helps facilitate control and provide a consistent feeling even under heavy use.

A slim aluminum perimeter frame provides precise cornering through excellent front-end feel and agility when riding at high speeds. The frame’s lightweight construction is composed of forged, extruded, and cast parts, while the engine is used as a stressed member and adds to the frame’s rigidity balance. Engineers carefully selected the dimension of the swingarm pivot, output sprocket and rear axle locations to focus on the center of gravity and balanced handling.

High-performance 49 mm coil spring front forks with A-KIT technology can be found up front, featuring large diameter inner tubes that are the same size as those found on the machines of Kawasaki’s factory racing team. The forks enable the use of large damping pistons for smooth action and firm damping. In the rear, a new Uni-Trak® linkage system is connected to the Showa Compact Design rear shock that boasts A-KIT technology with large diameter compression adjusters.

An oversized 270 mm, petal-shaped front brake rotor from the renowned manufacturer, Braking®, is fitted to perfectly complement the powerful engine of the KX450. The rear is equipped with a 250 mm petal-shaped Braking rotor coinciding with the large front disc.

Kawasaki continues its unmatched commitment towards providing riders with class-leading ERGO-FIT® comfort thanks to its adjustable handlebar mounting system and footpegs to fit a variety of riders and riding styles. The factory-style 1-1/8” Renthal® Fatbar® handlebars feature four-way adjustable mounts with 35 mm of adjustability to suit different sized riders. The footpegs feature dual-position mounting points, with a lower position that reduces the standard setting by an additional 5 mm, reducing the knee angle when taller riders are seated.

Complementing the championship-proven technology, the 2022 KX450 maintains its aggressive styling along with in-mold graphics on the radiator shrouds that result in an ultra-smooth surface and racy look needed to finish at the top of its class. The sleek bodywork has been molded to match the V-mounted radiators and narrow chassis design, helping facilitate rider movement and making it easy to slide back and forth.

KAWASAKI KX™250

With a championship heritage that boasts 18 AMA professional titles and 193 race wins since 2004, the Kawasaki KX250 is the ideal platform for mid-level to expert riders and continues as the best performing bike on track. Its high revving engine, electric start, coned disc-spring hydraulic clutch, and slim aluminum perimeter frame provide the power and handling needed to deliver quicker lap times.

The 249cc liquid-cooled, four-stroke engine delivers significant low-mid range performance while boasting top-end revs and impressive peak power thanks to its development through Kawasaki’s factory racing efforts. Its electric start system, activated by the push of a button, makes starting easy and convenient and is powered by a lightweight, compact Li-ion battery. The valve train utilizes a finger-follower valve actuation to help achieve a high rev limit and allows for the use of more aggressive cam profiles. A diamond-like coating on the finger followers helps protect against wear. Large-diameter, lightweight titanium valves and a high-performance piston with a dry film lubricant coating contribute to strong performance at all rpm.

A high-capacity coned disc-spring clutch offers a more direct feel and maintains a consistent feeling even as the clutch heats up under heavy use.  The airbox construction features a tapered intake funnel for high rpm performance and dual injectors deliver a smooth, instant response, and contribute to engine output at high rpm.

The KX250’s slim aluminum perimeter frame is based on its KX450 counterpart and with lightweight, nimble handling, and slim ergonomics in mind. The lightweight construction is composed of forged, extruded, and cast parts and offers optimal rigidity balance. The addition of a KX450 swingarm delivers the rigidity necessary to match the frame and helps to increase traction at the rear wheel. The center of gravity and key dimensions such as swingarm pivot, output sprocket and rear axle locations have all been carefully selected so that the rear tire drives the bike forward.

Large-diameter 48 mm KYB coil-spring front forks offer optimum action at the initial part of the fork stroke and feature large-diameter inner tubes, enabling the use of 25 mm damping pistons and deliver smooth action and firm damping. A Kashima Coat on the fork’s outer tubes creates a hard, low-friction surface to help prevent wear abrasion on the inside of the tubes. On the rear, a KYB shock unit complements the front fork and features dual compression adjustability, which allows high-speed and low-speed damping to be tuned separately. Kashima Coat on the tank cylinder helps prevent wear abrasion and reduces friction. A new Uni-Trak® rear suspension system mounts the linkage arm below the swingarm, allowing a longer suspension stroke and uses the same linkage ratios as that found on the KX450 motorcycle.

Adding to the numerous factory-style racing components on the KX250 are petal disc brakes, which include an oversized 270 mm Braking® brand rotor that delivers strong braking force and superb control. A 240 mm Braking brand disc can be found on the rear and contributes to controllability and optimized stopping performance.

Just like its KX450 counterpart, the KX250 continues with its class-leading ERGO-FIT® comfort thanks to its adjustable handlebar mounting system and footpegs to fit a variety of riders and riding styles.

Sleek bodywork with factory-style in-mold graphics help ensure it’s the sharpest looking bike in the paddock and further reflect its highly-tuned performance. The bodywork has been designed to facilitate rider movement with long, smooth surfaces that make it easy to slide back and forth. The fuel tank design allows for a flat progression from the seat to the tank, which gives the rider greater freedom of movement and facilitates sitting farther forward.

KAWASAKI KX™450X & KX™250X

Kawasaki introduced all-new off-road cross country competition models last year with the KX450X and KX250X models, featuring the same championship-proven technology found on KX race machines and purposely tuned them for off-road competition. Kawasaki’s rich history in off-road racing consists of more than 25 championships in WORCS, National Hare & Hound, GNCC, and Endurocross over the past 20 years.

The KX450X and KX250X share many winning traits with their motocross counterparts including the engine, frame, chassis, and styling. That successful base is paired with unique cross-country tuning and settings such as softer suspension settings, shorter gearing, off-road 21”/18” wheel combination, Dunlop Geomax AT81 tires, brake components, skid plate, and kickstand. The softer suspension settings and shorter gear ratio help create the optimal handling package for the race-ready off-road KX lineup.

MotoGP: Back-To-Back Races Will Test Marc Marquez’s Condition

Repsol Honda Team aim to regroup in Barcelona

After a difficult Italian GP on and off the track, Marc Marquez and Pol Espargaro are looking to get back to work and back to where they know they can be.

The Circuit de Barcelona-Montmelo will host round seven of the 2021 MotoGP World Championship, the Barcelona track a mainstay of the Grand Prix calendar. 2021 presents a revised layout around Turn 10 for riders to now master, the changes made to improve safety. The 24-lap MotoGP race on Sunday is sure to be another thrilling affair as the season continues to rapidly progress.

For the first time since returning from injury, Marc Marquez will race on back-to-back weekends. This presents a unique test for his physical condition and the eight-time World Champion is ready to take the weekend as it comes. Throughout his premier class career, Marquez has twice won the Catalan GP and only missed the podium on one occasion – in 2015 when he fell while battling for the lead. Marquez’s objective for the weekend remains the same as he looks to improve both himself and the Repsol Honda Team RC213V over the course of the Grand Prix.

The Montmelo circuit is a true home race for Granollers-native Pol Espargaro, his hometown less than ten kilometres from the track. After a compromised race in Mugello, Espargaro is aiming to put together a trouble free and consistent weekend on home soil. Flashes of progress, such as in Free Practice 3 in Italy, have the #44 optimistic for what the future holds. Espargaro has finished inside the top-ten at the Catalan GP on three occasions in the premier class after winning the 2013 Moto2 race.
Marc Marquez

“Although our last race was not good, overall Mugello was a weekend with some positives for us as it was quite consistent. We know where we are, we know where we want to go and we will keep following the correct steps week by week. In Montmelo it seems that there will be some fans in the grandstands again, the fans give a great atmosphere, and it will be very nice to see some people in the stands again at the home GP.”

Pol Espargaro

“After a difficult race, sometimes the best thing is a race the very next week. We need to keep moving, this is MotoGP and we return to action again. We approach this new weekend the same way as the previous; with our full focus and the goal to improve. In Mugello we found some things which will help us moving forward. Your home race is always special, even if all the fans can’t join us again this year. Montmelo is really special for me, growing up so close to it and being where I made my World Championship debut in 2006, it’s something you can’t describe racing here. We keep working, we keep improving, we keep moving.”

Launched in 2018, the Speed Twin set the benchmark for how a Modern Classic performance roadster should ride and feel thanks to its class-leading handling, thrilling and responsive engine, advanced rider technology and beautiful, modern custom style with category-defining premium finish and detailing.

An award-winning motorcycle, the Speed Twin has been a great success and a customer favorite. Recognized for having the power and torque of the Thruxton R in an even more accessible set up, the Speed Twin delivered the contemporary custom style and engaged ride of the Street Twin, with even more premium and beautiful details and touches.

And now for 2022, the Speed Twin brings an evolution in every dimension, from power and performance, to handling, technology and style – making it the perfect combination of character, style and genuine sport performance.

Higher Performance

Significantly updated for 2022, the Speed Twin’s characterful 1200cc High Power Bonneville twin engine now has even higher performance, as well as lower emissions. The engine now delivers 3HP more peak power with 99HP at 7,250rpm, plus more power in the mid-range than the previous generation.

Alongside the incredibly strong and linear power delivery, the 2022 Speed Twin also has a fuller torque curve, with peak torque of 83LB-FT arriving more than 500rpm lower down the rev range compared to the previous generation.

The responsiveness of the Speed Twin engine has also been enhanced, thanks to a 17% reduction in inertia obtained via a new lightweight crankshaft and alternator. These enable the engine to spin up faster than the previous generation, and rev harder for longer, with a red line now 500rpm higher than before. In addition, new high compression pistons, revised ports and a new cam profile complete the list of performance enhancements.

The distinctive sound of the Bonneville Twin is amplified by the new brushed stainless steel megaphone twin upswept sports silencers, that have been carefully crafted for a deep, throaty roar to match the Speed Twin’s legendary name. The innovative and uninterrupted exhaust header run cleverly conceals the catalyst box, delivering the characteristic clean-line “straight-run” design.

As with all of the models in Triumph’s Modern Classic range, the cost of ownership is kept low thanks to the first major service interval only after a full 10,000 miles.

Better Handling

Already acknowledged for its superb, sure-footed and comfortable handling, the new generation Speed Twin benefits from a number of significant upgrades for an even more precise, agile, and dynamic ride.

New for 2022, the Speed Twin comes equipped with higher specification upside down 43mm Marzocchi front forks with cartridge damping, bringing a more confidence-inspiring and comfortable ride with 120mm wheel travel. These are perfectly matched to the twin rear suspension units with adjustable spring preload, and 120mm rear wheel travel, both precisely tuned for even better handling and the perfect modern roadster ride.

Further enhancing the new generation Speed Twin, braking performance is improved with new higher specification Brembo 4-piston M50 radial monobloc front brake calipers and twin 320mm Brembo discs. Alongside the Nissin 2-piston floating rear caliper with 220mm disc, and ABS fitted as standard, these deliver a stronger initial braking-bite, more feel and better fade characteristics.

Ensuring incredible grip, precision and high-speed stability, new Metzeler Racetec RR tires are fitted as standard for the 2022 model, along with new cast aluminum wheels, 17” on both front and rear, with a lightweight 12-spoke design.

A beautifully balanced motorcycle, the Speed Twin brings an intuitive and confidence-inspiring ride. The ergonomics are perfectly proportioned with an accessible 31.5 inch seat height, a slim stand over width, tapered handlebars and a comfortable roadster foot-peg position, which are 1.5 inches further forward and slightly lower than the Thruxton, providing the rider with a more relaxed riding position.

Enhanced Technology

The new generation Speed Twin is packed with rider-focused technology, including a sophisticated ride-by-wire system that ensures precise throttle control and enables three riding modes: Rain, Road and Sport. These have been enhanced for 2022, adjusting both the throttle response and traction control settings to suit the rider’s preference. The riding modes can be changed at the touch of a button while on the move, to respond to any change in riding conditions, maximizing rider confidence and safety. The rider can also choose to switch the traction control off independently through the instrument menu.

The bike is also equipped with an LED rear light and indicators, and the signature always-on LED is incorporated into the headlight.

The contemporary 3D clocks incorporate a digital menu system accessed by the scroll button mounted on the handlebar. This provides the rider will all of the key information, including gear position, two trip settings, fuel level and range-to-empty, as well an average and current fuel consumption, access to traction control settings and TPMS indicator if fitted as an accessory.

Other rider focused technology includes an under-seat USB charging socket, an accessory Tire Pressure Monitoring System and an immobilizer with transponder integrated into the premium Triumph branded key.

 More Premium Style and Detailing

Incorporating Triumph’s timeless DNA with a contemporary stripped-back custom style
and poise, the new 2022 Speed Twin is even more beautiful and now comes with even
more stylish details.

In addition to the new 12 spoke cast wheels and twin upswept sporty silencers with brushed stainless-steel headers, the Speed Twin is characterized by its signature-shaped 3.8 gallon tank with knee indents, beautiful bar end mirrors, sculpted side panels and stylish bench seat.

Premium details and finishes are harmonized across the bike, including brushed aluminum front and rear mudguards with new mounts, plus brushed aluminum side panel finishers and heel guards. Additional premium touches and details can be found in the new anodized headlamp mounts to compliment the painted headlamp bowl, classic Monza fuel cap and clear anodized aluminum swingarm.

For 2022, the Speed Twin is available in three paint schemes: the new vibrant and lustrous Red Hopper scheme, the sophisticated Matte Storm Grey with subtle yellow accents, or the timeless Jet Black.

The Genesis of a Motorcycle Icon

Changing the face of motorcycling, the original 1938 Triumph Speed Twin, with the world’s first successful parallel twin engine packaged into a game changing chassis, was a revelation to ride. Its smooth dynamic handling and superb responsive feel established Triumph as the number one motorcycle marque globally for performance and handling, setting the template for all that followed, and earning a global reputation for being the first real ‘riders bike’.

For 2022, the new Speed Twin sets the benchmark all over again for its balance of torque-rich performance, agile and dynamic handling, and stunning contemporary custom motorcycle design and character.

50+ Custom Accessories

The 2022 Speed Twin is the perfect platform for personalization with over 50 custom accessories that riders can add to enhance the style, practicality and security of their bike. These range from multi-function LED indicators, to quilted seats and luggage, knee pads, engine embellishers, head bolt covers, sump plates, heated grips and many more.

All genuine Triumph accessories have been designed and developed alongside the bike itself, to the same exacting standards, to ensure perfect integration and excellent durability, and all come with the same two-year unlimited mileage warranty.

MotoGP: Brad Binder Signs New Three-Year Deal With Red Bull KTM

BINDER INKS NEW MOTOGP™ DEAL UNTIL 2024 TO TAKE KTM ALLIANCE UP TO TEN YEARS

2021 MotoGP news

KTM’s first ever MotoGP race winner, Brad Binder, will remain part of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team for the next three years and will celebrate ten Grand Prix seasons in ‘orange’ by the end of the 2024 MotoGP campaign.

The 25-year-old South African progressed through the KTM GP Academy structure. He competed in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, earned Moto3™ world championship success as well as 15 Grand Prix wins in both the Moto3 and Moto2™ categories with the Red Bull KTM Ajo squad, and then seized the factory’s maiden victory in the premier class during his debut term on the KTM RC16 during 2020, where he also achieved the status of ‘Rookie of the Year’.

Binder posted a new milestone at the Gran Premio D’Italia last weekend by equaling the highest top speed in the history of the sport at 362.4 kmph during FP3 at Mugello.

The new contract brings extra continuity and strength to the KTM MotoGP program, and Binder’s fighting spirit symbolises the way the manufacturer brings themselves to the track ‘Ready to Race’.

Brad Binder: “I’m super, super happy to have signed again for three more seasons with KTM and it will take us up to ten years. It’s incredible to have been with this manufacturer for such a long time now and we’ve always had a good relationship. I’m extremely happy in KTM colors so it’s extra satisfying to have a long contract signed-up. It’s cool to have that belief and support from a company. It’s an honor. From here on we can focus on building ourselves towards the front. We are not terribly far away, and it would be really nice to do something great together. It’s exciting to see what these next years will bring.”

Pit Beirer, KTM Motorsports Director: “This was a very easy contract for us to do because we love Brad as a racer and what he brings to the team, the factory and the MotoGP class. He was also very enthusiastic to make a big commitment to us and that says a lot for our progression and our potential in this championship. Sometimes you find a racer and a mentality that really fits with your own philosophy and the fact that Brad has come all the way to the top with us in a ten year period is a very special story. We’re really proud to continue racing with him and to keep setting new targets together.”

Mike Leitner, Red Bull KTM Race Manager: “As Team Manager I’m happy that Brad has placed his trust in us for another three years. He’s a very strong rider with a strong crew and a strong factory behind him. We will push together to achieve our mutual dreams and targets. It’s great we have this partnership up to ’24.”

MotoGP: World Championship Continues Next Weekend At Catalunya

MotoGP™ and MotoE™ weekend for Michelin in Catalunya

Following yet another record-breaking race weekend, the Michelin team will be heading straight from Italy to Spain as the MotoGP™ paddock relocates to Montmeló near Barcelona for the Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya, the seventh round of the 2021 season. In addition, the FIM Enel MotoE™ riders and teams will also join them for the third round of their series.

With the Catalunya race taking place during the weekend immediately following the Mugello race, the Michelin Motorsport team will not only face the logistical challenge of getting trucks from Italy to Spain but they will also have to stop in Clermont-Ferrand to collect the tire allocation for the Spanish race.

Featuring a highly abrasive surface with fast and sweeping corners, a 1,047m straight and elevation changes throughout its 4,627m (2.894 miles) length, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was built in 1991, reconfigured and resurfaced in 2018, with some changes made in 2020 to improve safety at Turn 10. It’s a track that is a favourite amongst riders and fans, and often serves up exciting racing along with a fantastic atmosphere, which could be the case this year with limited numbers of spectators being allowed in.

The Michelin tyre allocation has been selected to handle the demands of the circuit and the usual warm weather conditions expected at this time of year. As always, the data from previous races and tests proved invaluable when choosing the optimum compounds for the range of MICHELIN Power Slick tyres. Front and rear slicks will be in the usual Soft, Medium and Hard compounds, the Soft front will be symmetric, whilst the front Medium and Hard options and all the rears will be asymmetric, with a harder right-hand-side to manage the eight turns which go in that direction, compared to only six that go left.

Although unlikely, rain showers can still make an appearance at this time of year, so if wet weather does arrive a range of MICHELIN Power Rain tyres will be available in Soft and Medium symmetric fronts, along with Soft and Medium asymmetric rears, again with a harder right shoulder.

For MotoE, Michelin will have the usual allocation of Slick and Rain tyres, with the MICHELIN Power Slick range now manufactured using a higher percentage of sustainable and recycled materials, which is firmly in-line with the Michelin Group’s ‘All Sustainable’ strategy. To highlight and illustrate this advance in sustainability with the tyres, Michelin will have the world premiere of its interactive demonstration module in the MotoE paddock throughout the weekend.

Speaking about the Catalunya race, Piero Taramasso, Michelin Two-Wheel Motorsport Manager, said: “We know the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit very well from our past visits for testing and races, so I am sure that in addition to offering consistency and high levels of grip, our 2021 allocation will produce some fast lap-times and exciting racing in both the MotoGP and MotoE races. However, from a logistical perspective this is a challenging race due to the fact that our team will initially need to drive the 875 kilometres from Mugello to our base in Clermont-Ferrand immediately after the race to load up the trucks with the Catalunya allocation, before continuing their journey 600 kilometres south to Barcelona.”

The track action will get underway on Friday with FP1 and 2, followed two more practice sessions ahead of Qualifying on Saturday afternoon. The lights will go out for the start of the 24-lap race on Sunday at 13:00 local time. For the MotoE riders, their 8-lap race will start at 16:00 local-time.

Michelin, the leading mobility company, is dedicated to enhancing its clients’ mobility, sustainably; designing and distributing the most suitable tires, services and solutions for its clients’ needs; providing digital services, maps and guides to help enrich trips and travels and make them unique experiences; and developing high-technology materials that serve a variety of industries. Headquartered in Clermont-Ferrand, France, Michelin is present in 170 countries, has 123,600 employees and operates 71 tire production facilities which together produced around 170 million tires in 2020.         Not so long ago Friday and Saturday of a MotoGP race weekend were all about working on race pace. Obviously race pace is still the big deal, but the racing is now so close that if you qualify or start badly you end up deep in the pack at the first corner, and may never be able to catch up to the lead group.

Qualifying is now so important that the process starts before qualifying…

Most MotoGP races are now often won by a few meters, so it’s never been more important to qualify and start well. Riders tell you that a qualifying lap is like losing one of their lives! This is how they do it, MotoGP Editor Mat Oxley reveals in the latest issue of Roadracing World!

The final race of the Gaerne Estoril Round was full of drama, excitement and tension as Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) claimed his second victory of the weekend after rival Scott Redding (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) crashed out from second place.

The race started with Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with BRIXX WorldSBK) being given a double Long Lap Penalty for a jump start, while Redding was able to get the leap on the rest of the field on the run into Turn 1, while reigning Champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) lost ground when Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) forced the British rider wide at Turn 4.

It enabled Rinaldi to move into second place, behind teammate Redding, and the young Italian had a look at his teammate into Turn 1, he backed out of the move. It meant he lost time to American Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) before the American lost control of his Yamaha YZF R1 at Turn 6 and made contact with the Italian; forcing both to retire from the race on the second lap.

With Razgatlioglu’s penalties served, it enabled Rea to close in on Redding as the 21-lap race reached the halfway stage with the duo racing on different tyres; Rea once again on the SC0 and Redding attempting to complete the race on the SCX tyre as he did on Saturday when he claimed victory in Race 1.

On lap 14, Rea tried to make his first move at Turn 1 but, despite the advantage of the slipstream, with Redding just holding on. Rea got briefly ahead at Turn 1 before Redding used the cut back move to stay ahead. Redding then ran wide at Turn 3, allowing Rea to get back ahead, before Redding lost the front of his Ducati Panigale V4 R at Turn 4, forcing the British rider to tumble down the order.

Redding’s crash allowed Chaz Davies (Team GoEleven) to close in on long-term rival Rea in the closing stages of the race although Rea was able to hold on to claim his second victory of the Estoril Round and fourth of 2021, with Davies on the rostrum for the first time in 2021. Razgatlioglu recovered from his double Long Lap Penalty to claim his third podium of the weekend.

Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) came home in fourth place in Race 2 as his strong start of the season continued, finishing 1.6 seconds clear of Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with BRIXX WorldSBK) in fifth; the Italian picking up his best result in WorldSBK so far in his debut season. Michael van der Mark (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) claimed sixth place on his BMW; three of the four BMW M 1000 RR bikes finished inside the top ten. Alvaro Bautista (Team HRC) battled through from 18th on the grid again to claim seventh place, ahead of Tom Sykes (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK).

Eugene Laverty (RC Squadra Corse) was ninth with his second top ten finish of the weekend and the third BMW rider in the top ten. 2014 Moto2™ World Champion Tito Rabat (Barni Racing Team) claimed his second top ten finish of the weekend with tenth while Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) equaled his best finish of the 2021 season with 11th.

Team HRC’s Leon Haslam came home in 12th place on his Honda machine, finishing just ahead of Kohta Nozane (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team).

Redding finished the race in 14th place at the line, but was given a six-second penalty, the equivalent of two Long Lap Penalties, for a jump start in Race 2, meaning he was classified in 16th place behind Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) and Isaac Viñales (Orelac Racing VerdNatura). Christophe Ponsson (Alstare Yamaha) and Loris Cresson (TPR Team Pedercini Racing) completed the race of classification with 17 and 18th.

Apart from Gerloff and Rinaldi from their Lap 2 crash, there was only one more retirement from the race with Jonas Folger (Bonovo MGM Action) retiring in the early stages of the race with a technical issue with his BMW M 1000 RR. Samuele Cavalieri (TPR Team Pedercini Racing) retired on lap 17 of the 21-lap race.

P1 Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK)

“It’s a really difficult track. We just need to look at where we were last year and where the other Kawasakis have been. I can’t credit my team enough. Every decision we’ve made this weekend has been the right one, in a positive way, because on Friday we were really struggling. Struggling to make the rhythm, struggling to make the pace but if you said this on Friday, I would’ve snapped your hand off! Super happy. Of course, I was riding with Jason on my mind in the last few laps of the race because motorsport can be so beautiful but so tough as well. Still, sending lots of strength to his family, his team and all his friends.”

P2 Chaz Davies (Team GoEleven)

“That was a hard-fought podium, especially because we had an awful Saturday yesterday with everything that happened. We’ve kept plugging away, we worked really hard last night, we tried to pull some more info out of the data and tried to put together a better package this morning. I want to say a huge thank you to the GoEleven guys because they’ve been grafting really hard all winter and here, we are, second round and on the podium. Obviously, very happy to be there and I think today, these results are almost irrelevant with the tragedy that’s happened at Mugello, so my thoughts go out to Jason Dupasquier and his family”

P3 Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with BRIXX WorldSBK)

“I’m really surprised today because first I jumped the start, and I’m really sorry for my team because then I got two Long Lap Penalties. I tried in the whole session afterwards but, although I’m on the podium, I’m not happy because I’m also surprised. We took good points for the Championship.”

Sunday, 30 May 2021

Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP’s Fabio Quartararo claimed a commanding and emotional victory at the Gran Premio d’Italia Oakley, extending his Championship lead to 24 points. A minute of silence was held on the grid in memory of Moto3™ rider Jason Dupasquier, and Quartararo dedicated his victory to the Swiss rider.

Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and reigning World Champion Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) completed the Mugello podium as Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) crashed out on Lap 2.

Quartararo’s new front start device worked well off the line as the polesitter managed to keep Bagnaia at bay until the braking zone, when the Italian dived up the inside to lead. Pecco then led the way as the riders settled into the race, but the Ducati rider then tucked the front at Turn 9 on Lap 2. Quartararo was handed the lead, but he wasn’t able to escape quickly as compatriot Johann Zarco (Pramac Racing) duelled the Yamaha.

Eventually, Quartararo broke the slipstream heading onto Lap 5 after making good progress on the twisty part of the circuit, and from there, the Yamaha was able to edge clear of Zarco in second place. By Lap 11 Quartararo’s lead was up to 2.7s and comfortably lapping in the 1:47s, the Yamaha rider was in a league of his own at Mugello and took a third win of the season by 2.5s.

After battling with Quartararo in the early laps, Zarco was forced to focus on keeping Oliveira behind him thereafter. The two Team Suzuki Ecstar riders – Mir and Alex Rins – had trouble making passes stick on Jack Miller (Ducati Lenovo Team) too just behind, Ducati power enabling the Australian to overtake Mir and Rins on the straight. Eventually though, the Suzukis got through and both got into the podium fight.

With eight laps remaining, Oliveira moved past Zarco for the first time at Turn 11 to take P2. Exactly the same manoeuvre was produced by Mir a lap later as the reigning World Champion picked up P3, and he crucially also held Zarco at bay into Turn 1. Rins then pounced with six laps to go as Zarco was shuffled back to P5, with Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), Miller and Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) close behind.

With five to go, Rins then crashed out at the final corner from fourth place, a fourth DNF in a row for the Spaniard. Oliveira was able to just fend off Mir, although it was close and initially track limits came into play – but both had exceeded them every-so-slightly. Zarco missed out by just under a second in fourth, although he latter does move up to P2 in the standings though, 24 points behind Quartararo.

Binder gave KTM a double top five at the Italian GP and claims his equal best finish of the season despite never having raced in the premier class at Mugello before, and Miller comes home P6. Aleix Espargaro impressed again to pick up a P7, with Maverick Viñales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) taking the chequered flag in P8 after his difficult qualifying in P13. 2019 Mugello winner Danilo Petrucci (Tech3 KTM Factory Racing) was ninth to earn his second top 10 in a row, with Valentino Rossi (Petronas Yamaha SRT) completing the top 10 on home soil.

Iker Lecuona (Tech3 KTM Factory Racing), Pol Espargaro (Repsol Honda Team), Michele Pirro (Pramac Racing), Alex Marquez (LCR Honda Castrol) and Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) were the final points scorers.

Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) crashed at Turn 3 on Lap 2 unhurt, but forced Franco Morbidelli (Petronas Yamaha SRT) into the gravel, the Italian rejoining down the order. Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) also crashed out of the race late on at Turn 13. Enea Bastianini (Avintia Esponsorama) crashed on the way to the grid after hitting the rear of Zarco’s bike, riders ok.

The riders took the Swiss flag onto the podium in memory of Dupasquier as MotoGP™ sends our deepest condolences to all those he leaves behind.

MotoGP™ will be back on track at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya next weekend.

2022 KAWASAKI KX™ MOTOCROSS AND OFF-ROAD FULL-SIZE MOTORCYCLE LINEUP

The Bike That Builds Champions

Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

MotoGP is closer than ever and passing is more difficult than ever, so race weekends have never been more complicated for riders and engineers.

Rea fights back for Race 2 victory as Redding crashes from second in Estoril thriller
