The gloves look like they’re about to come off in France, with the top 12 riders on Day 1 covered by less than three quarters of a second.

The 2021 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship’s opening day of action from the Motul French Round at the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours was electric as the top three in the Championship went head-to-head. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) was on fire as he stormed to the top of the standings, with Scott Redding (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) in second and Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) in third. The afternoon’s session was dry, having been damp in FP1 in the morning.

TITLE CONTENDERS IN THE TOP 3: Razgatlioglu in stunning form

At Yamaha, it was Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) who was flying the flag. Razgatlioglu put in a long stint on the same tyres and set 11 mid-1’37s out a 13-lap run, showing his sensational consistency as he led the way for the main portion of the season and continued to improve his pace. Teammate Andrea Locatelli was a little bit behind his teammate as he adapts to Magny-Cours on a WorldSBK bike. Tracking his teammate at various points throughout the session. Come the end of the day, it was Razgatlioglu who was fastest, whilst Locatelli ended up in 11th, as he continues to get used to the R1 around the French circuit.

Scott Redding (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) was up inside the top six as he continued to get to grips with the Magny-Cours circuit in the dry conditions for the first time in his career. Having been inside the top two positions for the last seven races, Redding is coming into the Motul French Round in fine form and was good in the mixed conditions in the morning. Redding finished the afternoon in second with teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi down in ninth, with work to do for the Italian.

The Kawasaki pairing of Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) and teammate Alex Lowes were in good form as they took to the dry Magny-Cours circuit. Rea set a consistent pace and for the majority of the session, was sitting well inside the top five, whilst Lowes was also right with his teammate. The British duo worked away hard until the end of the session, before finishing third and eighth respectively, having been first and third in the morning’s damp-but-drying session. Rea’s in-touch with his Championship rival Razgatlioglu, but the Turk’s pace might well be giving him the edge over the race distance if conditions are to remain the same across Saturday and Sunday.

RISE OF THE INDEPENDENT: Davies and Gerloff in contention

The Independent charge was led by Chaz Davies (Team GoEleven) in fourth place, with the Welshman going well at a circuit he took a podium at in his most recent race at the circuit. The next Independent came from Garrett Gerloff (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) and the American was constantly improving his time all the way to the end of the session. The two were the only riders inside the top ten from Independent teams but Davies in particular looks strong, with the Ducati rider constantly within the top five throughout the dry FP2 session.

HONDA AND BMW: top six success on Friday

It was a bright start to the weekend for one side of the Honda garage as Leon Haslam (Team HRC) completed the top five, showing his strengths around the Magny-Cours circuit. However, on the other side of the garage, Alvaro Bautista was down in 12th place, with the Spaniard working away on the Honda with it being his first day of dry weather running on the bike since joining the team. The potential is there this weekend, and with dry weather scheduled for the remainder of the weekend combined with wet running at the start of the day, Team HRC could be set for a stronger weekend than in recent rounds.

The BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team enjoyed a good day’s work, as Tom Sykes took sixth place and was top BMW overall, although teammate Michael van der Mark was second in the mixed conditions in the morning session. Unfortunately for van der Mark, the Dutchman suffered a technical problem at Turn 11 during FP2, cutting his track action short. Sykes was just less than half a second from Toprak’s time, whilst van der Mark completed the top overall, edging out Locatelli by just 0.018s.

BEST OF THE REST: just over a second off

The best of the rest consisted of Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) who was 13th but just 1.096s from top spot and was more than a tenth clear of local hero Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) in 14th. Jonas Folger (Bonovo MGM Racing) was 15th on his Magny-Cours debut, ahead of Leandro Mercado (MIE Racing Honda Team) and Tito Rabat (Barni Racing Team), with the Spaniard suffering an off-track excursion. Another home-hero Christophe Ponsson (Gil Motor Sport Yamaha) was 18th, ahead of Isaac Viñales (ORELAC Racing VerdNatura), Kohta Nozane (GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) – who crashed at Turn 8 – and Loris Cresson (OUTDO TPR Team Pedercini Racing). Cresson’s previous teammate, Jayson Uribe, isn’t at Magny-Cours due to travel issues.

British Superbike: Championship Racing At Snetterton Sept. 3-5

Bennetts British Superbike contenders ready to play their cards right at Snetterton

The Bennetts British Superbike Championship makes its annual visit to Norfolk’s Snetterton circuit, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this season, this weekend (3/4/5 September).

The circuit’s two-wheeled heritage will be commemorated at the event, as the country’s leading riders battle for Snetterton’s most prestigious two-wheeled title, the ‘Pirelli Race of Aces’. The overall prize will be awarded to the highest combined points scorer across the three races.

The stakes will be high at the East Anglian circuit, as the battle to be crowned 2021 Bennetts BSB champion at the Brands Hatch season finale in October intensifies. Just six races now remain to decide which eight riders will battle for the crown in the end of season Showdown.

Championship leader Jason O’Halloran has played his cards right so far this season to become the first and only competitor so far to confirm his Title Fighter status. The McAMS Yamaha rider claimed his ninth win of the season last time out at Cadwell Park, which cemented his position. The Australian is now continuing his focus on scoring vital Podium Points at the circuit where he claimed his first Bennetts BSB race win.

Christian Iddon and Tarran Mackenzie are joint second in the standings following a challenging weekend in Lincolnshire. The pair have both been race winners so far this season, and will be eager to return to the top this weekend to close the deficit to O’Halloran.

Iddon has fond memories of Snetterton; it was the track where he celebrated his first Bennetts BSB race win last season so he will be determined to strike again this weekend. Mackenzie meanwhile, is determined to make amends after sitting out the Sunday races at Cadwell Park with a finger injury.

Tommy Bridewell had a consistent weekend at Cadwell Park with a trio of top three finishes, with race two marking his 50th in the championship. The Oxford Products Racing Ducati rider is aiming to repeat the hat trick of podium finishes he delivered at Snetterton last year, with just a narrow five-point margin currently separating him from Peter Hickman.

Hickman had a weekend to remember at his home round, becoming the sixth different race winner of 2021 and securing FHO Racing BMW their first victory in the Superbike class in the team’s debut season. He will be hunting another podium haul this weekend in his bid to give the team its first Showdown appearance.

Danny Buchan was forced to miss the Cadwell Park races after his high-speed crash at Donington Park, which dropped the SYNETIQ BMW rider to sixth in the overall standings, but he returns ready to stack up the points again this weekend.

Glenn Irwin trails him in the standings by just 11 points ahead of the next three races, and the Honda Racing rider is bidding to replicate the form that took him to a victory and the ‘Race of Aces’ title last season.

Lee Jackson meanwhile is the rider in a precarious position as the FS-3 Racing Kawasaki contender holds the final place inside the top eight of the standings and only by a narrow two-point margin from Bradley Ray with local contender Ryan Vickers also hoping to shuffle the Showdown pack.

A resurgent weekend could also yet see Knockhill podium finisher Rory Skinner, or reigning champion Josh Brookes, still make the cut in six races’ time at Silverstone if they finish the main season with a strong display.

Bennetts British Superbike Championship standings:

Jason O’Halloran (McAMS Yamaha) 342

Christian Iddon (VisionTrack Ducati)  223

Tarran Mackenzie (McAMS Yamaha) 223

Tommy Bridewell (Oxford Products Racing Ducati) 205

Peter Hickman (FHO Racing BMW) 200

Danny Buchan (SYNETIQ BMW) 165

Glenn Irwin (Honda Racing) 154

Lee Jackson (FS-3 Racing Kawasaki) 133

Bradley Ray (Rich Energy OMG Racing BMW) 131

Ryan Vickers (RAF Regular and Reserve Kawasaki) 114

Rory Skinner (FS-3 Racing Kawasaki) 111

Josh Brookes (VisionTrack Ducati) 105

Jason O’Halloran – McAMS Yamaha

Championship leader

“Cadwell Park was another really strong weekend for us. We had found a good direction, but Hicky had been doing an amazing job and he was super strong, so I pushed him as much as I could in the first two races. To win in the last one was the icing on the cake. I wanted to win there for many years so I was chuffed to bits.

“We confirmed our place in the Showdown and strengthened our position with the Podium Points, as they are what we need to build up before the final championship fight.

“I can’t wait to get back to Snetterton although it is a bit of a difficult one for me. On the Honda, I was really strong and I had my first win there, and had a lot of podium finishes.

“Since I have got on the Yamaha it has been a track that perhaps hasn’t been as strong as some other tracks for us. I am not sure why, but the last couple of years it hasn’t quite gone our way when we have been at Snetterton, but I am really confident ahead of this weekend.

“It’s a track that I love and I feel that the improvements that we have made will make the Yamaha stronger this year. I think we should be in a position to challenge for top positions. We have two rounds left now before the Showdown and we just need to keep scoring as many Podium Points as possible.”

AHRMA: Classic MotoFest At Daytona Scheduled January 7-9, 2022

The American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association’s (AHRMA) Classic MotoFest at Daytona International Speedway will kick off the 2022 motorcycle racing season on January 7-9, 2022. Off-Road MX, Dirt Track, and a full slate of Road Racing will be featured.

The event, which is making its first appearance at the World Center of Racing since 2015, will include classic and modern motorcycle road racing on the famous Daytona road course and tri-oval layout, which has been the site of motorcycle racing since 1961. For the first time ever, modern and vintage sidecars will race on Daytona’s famed, 31-degree high banks.

The term “Superbike” is famous world-wide as the descriptive term for exciting sportbike racing. The very first Superbike race was held at Daytona in 1976, going on to great heights ever since. There’s nothing like the snarling big-engined Superbikes, with high handlebars and no fairings, speeding around Daytona. It’s a sight and sound to behold.

For the 2022 season AHRMA honors the Daytona Superbike legacy by presenting Vintage Superbike Heavyweight as its featured Vintage Cup class. Fittingly, the first installment of the 2022 Vintage Cup Heavyweight Superbike series will be January 8, 2022, at the place where it all started forty-five years ago…Daytona International Speedway.

In addition to this paved action there will be Vintage and Post-Vintage MX on a nearby 135-acre grassy and wooded site (the track’s Lot 7). Also featured will be night-time dirt track action on Daytona’s championship ¼-mile “flat Track” outside the west end of the speedway.

For all three days the Speedway’s infield will be open for camping. RV hook-ups are available.

The family-friendly infield events will also feature a Swap Meet and Bike Show which will include local and national vintage motorcycle clubs.

General admission tickets will include access to the pits and paddock where fans can soak up the history and feel the action. Ticket information is forthcoming.

Make your plans to enjoy the sights and sounds of motorcycling history at the ‘World Center of Racing’ this coming January.

About AHRMA

The American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association Ltd. is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to restoring and competing on classic motorcycles. With about 4000 members, AHRMA is the largest vintage racing group in North America and one of the biggest in the world. The association has grown steadily over the years, reflecting the increasing interest in classic bikes.

About Daytona International Speedway

Daytona International Speedway is a state-of-the-art motorsports facility and was awarded the SportsBusiness Journal’s prestigious Sports Business Award for Sports Facility of the Year in 2016. Daytona International Speedway is the home of The Great American Race – the DAYTONA 500. Though the season-opening NASCAR Cup Series event garners most of the attention – as well as the largest audience in motorsports – the approximately 500-acre motorsports complex, also known as the World Center of Racing, boasts the most diverse schedule of racing on the globe. In addition to at least nine major event weekends, the Speedway grounds are also used extensively for events that include concerts, civic and social gatherings, car shows, photo shoots, production vehicle testing and police motorcycle training.

Canadian Superbike: Third And Final 2021 Round Confirmed

CSBK Confirm Final National and Pro 6 GP Round at Calabogie Motorsports Park

Toronto, ON – The final 2021 National Canadian Superbike Championship Series will be held at Calabogie Motorsports Park, southwest of Ottawa, ON., on Friday, September 17 and Saturday, September 18.  Included in the final major event of the 2021 Canadian season is the last Pro 6 GP race series event of the inaugural year of that new Championship.

Limited spectator tickets will soon be available on the Calabogie Motorsports Park venue web site.

The COVID19-delayed 2021 CSBK tour opened in July at Calabogie, with CSBK rookie Alex Dumas earning both Superbike Feature class victories in his debut on the Canadian tour with the Liqui Moly/FAST Riding School Suzuki squad.  The premier class title decider at Calabogie is shaping up as a fight for the coveted number one plate between Dumas and rivals Ben Young (the 2019 Champ on the Van Dolder’s Home Team BMW) and current number one Jordan Szoke (Canada General Warranty Kawasaki ZX-10R Ninja).

The upcoming Calabogie event will mark the latest on the calendar that the CSBK tour has gone into the fall since 1986.  The two Superbike Feature class events will be decisive in determining the outcome of the overall season’s Champion and 2022 number one plate holder.

Usually, there would also be one Liqui Moly Pro Sport Bike middleweight support class event at Calabogie, but instead this category gets two Nationals, making up for a postponed race at the most recent event at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park August 15.

Friday’s Calabogie schedule will include practice and qualifying, as well as the battle for the Yuasa Batteries Pole Bonus awarded to the top Pro Feature racer in “Q” action – Ben Young has a perfect record in the Yuasa Batteries program so far this season.

However, Friday’s schedule will be completed by a make-up Liqui Moly Pro Sport Bike round, using the grid set during Qualifying at C.T.M.P. on Friday, August 13.  Only racers who entered at “old Mosport” and qualified for the final will be allowed to take part in this unusual, postponed event.  Friday afternoon’s event will also award the $ 2,900 purse announced for C.T.M.P., provided by that venue.

Saturday’s final day of Canadian National action in 2021 will include the deciding two Pro Superbike races, as well as the final event in the Liqui Moly Pro Sport Bike series, currently headed by the Turcotte Performance Kawasaki ZX-6R of Calabogie specialist Sebastien Tremblay.  There will also be two Super Sonic Road Race School Amateur Lightweight Sport Bike races, as well as the rest of the typical schedule of categories for the Pro 6 GP race series and CSBK.
