BELDING, Mich. After a brief two-week break, the WERA National Series hits the road again this weekend for round six at Michigan’s Grattan Raceway, kicking off the second half of an exciting 2006 season. Saturday, July 15 will feature the WERA/Bridgestone National Endurance Series race. The six-hour contest will get started at 10:30 a.m. Last year’s endurance race at Grattan featured one of the closest finishes in recent years, with Team Velocity Racing crossing the finish line just 30 seconds ahead of Vesrah Suzuki. It is Vesrah who seems to have the edge over the competition this year, though, with four wins in just five races. Other teams to keep an eye on in the endurance field include 5150 Racing and ARNCHU Racing. Both teams earned overall podium spots during round five at Road Atlanta and are shaping up to be tough competitors. Sunday’s WERA/Michelin National Challenge Series sprint races get started at 12:30 p.m. While the usual top riders- including Tray Batey, Lee Acree and Ben Thompson- can be expected to perform well, a number of quick local riders call Grattan their home track. Larry Denning proved that last season, matching Batey in wins as they each took home three trophies. Vesrah’s Batey has pulled into the Open Superstock lead after a victory at Road Atlanta, while his teammate Acree has taken over the second spot in the class championship. Acree is also closing in on the 750 Superstock points lead- he sits just three points behind leader Mark Junge, another Vesrah rider. The points gap between Batey and Jensen in Formula 1 is still a slim two points, but the tables have been turned. Batey led the way leading up to Road Atlanta, but a second-place finish behind Acree gave Jensen the advantage he needed to take over the championship battle. Tickets to the WERA National Series at Grattan are $30 for the weekend, including practice and qualifying on Friday, $20 for Saturday and Sunday, and $15 for Sunday only.
