Brett McCormick gambled on paying his own way in AMA Pro American Superbike races at Daytona and Fontana and the payoff may follow a two-day test now taking place at Sonoma, California’s Infineon Raceway. McCormick’s inspired rides at Daytona International Speedway March 4-5 and at Auto Club Speedway last weekend caught the attention of key personnel at Michael Jordan Motorsports, and the team invited 18-year-old McCormick to replace injured Aaron Yates at the Infineon test. If all goes well, McCormick may replace Yates on a Michael Jordan Motorsports GSX-R1000 at Road Atlanta in two weeks. “Obviously we’re very excited he has this opportunity,” said Brett’s father Grant McCormick, reached by cell phone during the lunch break at Infineon Raceway. “So far so good.” Grant McCormick said Brett paid to bring Pascal Picotte’s Canadian Superbike team to Daytona, then did a paid deal with Barry Gilsenan’s Celtic Racing for a ride, crew and support at Auto Club Speedway. “Obviously it’s very expensive to bring a team down from Canada,” Grant McCormick said. “We’d done that at Daytona. Then we had a chance to work with Celtic Racing at Fontana and go from there. You can’t be in the game if the teams don’t know who you are or where you are. He had to show what he could do.”
